AVALON YOUTH HUB OFFICIAL OPENING

On Friday the 18th May 2018 the Avalon Youth Hub was officially opened by Minister Stokes,

Mayor Regan, Justene Gordon (CEO of The Burdekin Association) and myself. Many community

members and service providers who will staff the Hub attended the Opening marking an historic

day for both Avalon and surrounding areas.

As a Principal it is impossible to separate education and the health of the individual child and

his/her family. Everyday my colleagues and I see firsthand the effects, that issues such as: mental

ill-health, drugs and alcohol, homelessness, family breakdowns and communication issues and

relationship problems can have on all concerns.

In fact, 1 in 4 of our adolescents and young people experience mental health issues and even more

are exposed to drug and alcohol concerns.

At the most tragic end to this spectrum of ‘youth ill-health’ is suicide. When an individual takes his

or her life the community bleeds; from the family to the neighbours to the friends. From the local

surf club (and especially) the school.

This community is no different to any other yet we have experienced many challenges in achieving

consistent care and advice from expert service providers due to our geographic position.

Navigating the matrix of help is muddy at best but from now on a new community-partner is here to

help.

I acknowledge the impressive work of The Burdekin Association in binding this unique relationship

together. It is rare to have a local council, State and Federal Government, Northern Sydney

Health, Service Providers and Education all agree on anything but they are when it comes to this

venture. Furthermore the success of this site may be witnessed and replicated in other

communities.

As a Principal I am ecstatic at the prospect of having such a great deal of expertise now available

to help this community’s youth cope with the ever-changing landscape of adolescence and young

adulthood.

Please familiarise yourself with the services it provides and direct anyone you feel may be in need of assistance towards it.
