Barron’s editors took a look at a
range of rare and classic cars
and compared them to gold,
bond and equities over the course of 30
years. The results surprised some. Penta
scoured the market and found Abeles’
assessment remarkably accurate,
despite today’s gold price near $1,350 a
troy ounce.
Our favorite items unearthed were
Spanish pendeloque, in this case
unusual drop earrings. Made circa 1780,
they resembled ribbons of gold, dotted
with lush green Colombian emeralds.
The Spanish earrings can be had for
$8,500 at Métier Paris, an independent
Paris-based dealer selling on the
collectibles Website RubyLane.com.
“They’re beautiful. They are not in style.
That’s why they don’t bring crazy money,”
says Abeles.
Another fine piece that caught our
eye was an Ottoman pendant laced with
intricate gold designs, rubies, turquoise,
and pearls, dating to the late 16th or
early 17th century. It was estimated to
sell at Christie’s between $28,000 and
$36,000, and in April fetched $32,600.
Those are great prices for what are
rare collectibles. “Not that much jewelry
has survived from the 1700s to 1800s.
A lot of it was destroyed, remodeled,
or melted down,” Abeles says. “The
historical reference is the primary value,
and it appreciates, if in good condition,
and if it is in a suite, in a box.”
Such culturally rich pieces also
look great worn to the opera or a
gala evening. In fact, these unusual
adornments -- with their exquisite
filigree, hammering, and other goldsmith
techniques that have long been lost in
the mass manufacture of modern jewelry
-- often make a simple black dress. And
antique jewelry containing rare Indian
rubies or Latin American gemstones are
special for other reasons; today, many
gemstones are heat-treated, a modern
process used to hide a stone’s inherent
flaws. Which is why true aficionados
usually prefer to collect the untreated
gems of the past.
There are also some very eager
sellers out in the market. Over the past
two years, an increasing number of
Europeans -- badly hurt and in need of
cash as the crisis continues to wear on --
are selling prized heirlooms like watches
and antique jewelry, generally defined as
any work over 100 years old. This trend
to sell heirlooms continues, confirms
Demetra Lalaounis, who, with her sisters,
runs a jewelry business that creates new
works inspired by antiquities.

Returns aren’t as astronomical as they once were, but rare cars have still outperformed most equities. And, you can’t take an ETF for a scenic drive.

REAL ESTATE ART ART
Still looking for a summer rental in New York’s Hamptons? The wise way to approach the rental market on Long Island’s South Fork is, of course, to scout out options in January and secure your dream property early on.
Figuring out what to with your art collection, for estate planning purposes, is a complicated affair and solutions can range from donating works to a major museum to begging a family member to accept your cherished collectibles.
Here’s what caught our eye in the just released the 2016 Art & Finance Report, an annual account of the financial state of the art market, as compiled by Deloitte Luxembourg and the London-based research firm ArtTactic.
