Our favorite items unearthed were

Spanish pendeloque, in this case

unusual drop earrings. Made circa 1780,

they resembled ribbons of gold, dotted

with lush green Colombian emeralds.

The Spanish earrings can be had for

$8,500 at Métier Paris, an independent

Paris-based dealer selling on the

collectibles Website RubyLane.com.

“They’re beautiful. They are not in style.

That’s why they don’t bring crazy money,”

says Abeles.

Another fine piece that caught our

eye was an Ottoman pendant laced with

intricate gold designs, rubies, turquoise,

and pearls, dating to the late 16th or

early 17th century. It was estimated to

sell at Christie’s between $28,000 and

$36,000, and in April fetched $32,600.

Those are great prices for what are

rare collectibles. “Not that much jewelry

has survived from the 1700s to 1800s.

A lot of it was destroyed, remodeled,

or melted down,” Abeles says. “The

historical reference is the primary value,
