A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN

Throughout our long history, we Jews have had no shortage of enemies. Pharaohs have enslaved us, Semitic tribes pursued us, and we were twice exiled from Israel by kings and emperors. As a landless people, we were often caught up in the waves of history; while empires declined and new ones formed, Jews—often on the fringes of society—fell victim to marauder, crusader, and inquisitor. We were blamed for failing economies and accused of being political subversives. The consequences were the same, though the scale increased: blood libels, pogroms, genocide. Yet somehow, we have consistently outlived our enemies, and the words of our Passover haggadah continually ring true: In every generation they rise up against us, but the Holy One, Blessed be God, saves us from their hands.

I was reminded of all of this recently as I watched the news coverage surrounding the dramatic demise of Osama bin Laden, an enemy not just of the Jews, but of all humanity. In the outpouring of emotion that followed, impromptu celebrations broke out at the site of the World Trade Center, while sports fans spontaneously broke out into chants of USA! as they received the news over their smart phones. Closer to home, families of 9/11 victims spent time reflecting at the numerous memorials across the tri-state area. All of this left me thinking: what is an appropriate Jewish response to the fall of an enemy?

In the book of Proverbs, we find two conflicting claims about how to respond to the fall of the wicked:

When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is joy. (Proverbs 11:10)

Whoever mocks the poor blasphemes his Maker; and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished. (Proverbs, 17:5)

The first verse seems to suggest that it is appropriate to take joy in the downfall of the wicked; their death is a validation of divine providence and an affirmation of justice in the world. The second verse, though, commands the opposite: calamity, it seems, cannot be the source of joy no matter who it befalls.

Rabbi Avrham Grodzinski, head of the Slobodka Yeshiva immediately prior to the Holocaust, offers the following resolution of these two verses:

When the wicked perish, there is joy. Not everyone is worthy and prepared for this. A person requires great care that he not be considered glad at calamity. A purity of heart is needed for this mitzvah, more than that which is needed for all of the other mitzvot in the Torah. If those who left Egypt recited a song of praise over the fall of Egypt, that was because of the lofty spiritual status that they had at that time. Their hatred for the wicked was a hatred for evil—a pure and simple hatred that is appropriate for fearers and lovers of God. (Tranlastion: Rabbi Gil Student)

Rejoicing at the fall of the wicked, at least for Rabbi Grodzinksi, is appropriate only in limited circumstances. If a person takes joy not in revenge or in the personal tragedy of the wicked person, but rather, in the diminishing of evil in the world, then the joy serves a holy purpose. But if the joy is colored by vengeance or malice towards the wicked person, it may not be in accordance with Jewish values.

Does the death of Osama bin Laden reduce the presence of evil in the world? Certainly it does, and I am grateful to God that I live in a country that values the pursuit of Justice. I hope that this achievement helps to bring closer a time when peace, freedom and prosperity are attainable for all in the world.

Best wishes for a month of peace,

Rabbi Daniel Stein

T h e R i t u a l C o r n e r At the March scholar lecture, Dr. David Arnow made mention of the unique staff [rod] of Moses. He stated that it was one of the ten things discussed in the Mishna that were created on the Eve of the first Shabbos of Creation and that would be needed in the world. Rabbi Stein then provided this interesting information:

Ten things were created on the eve of Shabbat of Creation:

S i s t e r h o o d N e w s Saturday Services and Kiddush

Every Saturday morning we enjoy a festive and informal Shabbat service followed by a lovely Kiddush where congregants have an opportunity to mix and socialize. It is very exciting to see that participation is growing steadily. If you haven’t been to services in a while, please join us soon. We are always looking for volunteers to assist with the Kiddush.

Our goal is to strengthen our community and share the Sabbath by working together. If you could donate a little of your time after services, please contact me.

Events

The brunch we had early this year was a great way to get to know each other better. The flower show did not get much interest. We would like to plan some fun events that will be of interest to you. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Join the Sisterhood Board

Please consider working with me in a more formal capacity by becoming a member of the Sisterhood Board. There are many board positions opened (so far we only have a President and a Treasurer). It will be fun to work together.

Dues to Sisterhood is $20.00. Please make your checks out to Bnai Abraham Sisterhood and send it to the synagogue office.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Havdallah and a Movie: Ajami, Snacks and discussion to follow Ajami is an area of Jaffa where Arabs, Palestinians, Jews and Christians try to live together in an atmosphere that is -to say the least - electric. Omar, an Israeli Arab, struggles to save his family from elimination by a gang of extortionists. He also courts a beautiful Christian girl, Hadir, but marrying her is far from obvious. Malek, an illegal Palestinian worker, tries to collect enough money to pay for his mother's operation. Dando, an Israeli cop, does his utmost to trace his missing brother who may have been killed by Palestinians. Binj, Malek and Omar's Arab friend, suffers from being rejected by other members of his community for mixing with an Israeli girl. All of them will meet violence, most of the time ... with violence.

AL’S CLEANERS - FUNDRAISER FOR BAS!

It’s easy. Just mention that you are a member of Bnai Abraham Synagogue, and they will credit the synagogue and send the proceeds periodically. Al’s is only about seven blocks from the synagogue, has very convenient hours, and does excellent work.

Page 13: BAS May '11 Bulletin

A NEW FUNDRAISER FOR BNAI ABRAHAM

Our next fundraiser will be a “Buy Local” campaign, which will be an extension of the

arrangement that we already have with a few local businesses.

We will be soliciting local small businesses to give Bnai Abraham a small percentage of the sales

from Synagogue members who identify themselves as such at the time of purchase. We will list all

participating merchants in the Bulletin on a tear-out card which you can carry in your wallet as a

reminder.

According to ‘Buy Local Philly’, three times as much money stays in the local economy when you

buy goods and services from locally owned businesses instead of large chains. This campaign can

definitely spread some goodwill from our Bnai community to the heart of the area business

community.

If you know of any business that would like to participate, please contact Judy Walker at

[email protected]. We will have a soliciting team armed with information and a letter

from the Synagogue.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These three words are applicable to a wide variety of things and situations Paper is a precious commodity and comes from trees, one of our dwindling natural resources. Stay conscious of the need to conserve paper, and rethink some of your work or school printing practices. This will cut down on wasted paper and will decrease the amount of new paper that needs to be purchased. Don't print things out unless absolutely necessary. Try not to print emails. Back up files on your computer using multiple electronic methods and locations. If you still have old one-sided sheets of paper around, use them for printing, copying, or as a notepad for taking notes. And always recycle paper rather than throwing it in the trash.
