or themselves and mention the name o Allahon known [i.e., specic] days over what He has

provided or them o [sacricial] animals

    [QURAN 22:28]

Ibn Abbas said the known days

reerred to in this ayah are the days o Hajj

    which lie in Dhul-Hijjah.Ibn Abbas

said that the Prophet said: Tere are not

any days, in which righteous deeds are done

in them, more beloved to Allah than these

    days, i.e., the ten days (o Dhul-Hijjah)...

(Bukhari) Saeed ibn Jubayrworked veryhard in these days. Ibn Hajar opined in

Fathul-Bari that the reason or the virtues

o these days is that the mothers o worship

lie in them: praying, asting, charity and

Hajj. Some o the scholars o Islam said

the Day o Sacrice (the 10th o Dhul-

Hijjah) is the best day o the year, thereby

    emphasising its value.

    Ibn Kathir said the ten

    nights reers to the frst

    10 days o Dhul-Hijjah.

    And once you have

    made your intention to

    sacrifce, rerain rom

    OFFER A SACRIFICE...

    Abd-Allaah ibn Umar said: he

Prophet stayed in Madinah or ten years,

oering sacriice (every year on Eid).

[AHMAD; AT-TIRMIDHI; AND CLASSED ASHASAN BY AL-ALBAANI IN MISHKAAT AL-MASAABEEH, 1475]

    Umm Salamah said the Prophet

said: When you see the new moon o Dhul-

Hijjah according to another version, When

the ten days (o Dhul-Hijjah) begin andany one o you wants to oer a sacrifce, let

him rerain (rom cutting) his hair and

    nails. [AHMAD AND MUSLIM]

    According to another version: Let

him not remove anything rom his hair

and nails until he has oered the sacrifce.

And according to yet another version, He

should not touch his hair or skin.

    MAKE TAWBAH(REPENTANCE)...

Abu Hurairah said that the Prophet

said: Verily Allah has a sense o Ghayrah

(honour, prestige and anger over its

violation), and Allahs sense o Ghayrah is

provoked when a person does that which

Allah has made prohibited.[BUKHARI AND MUSLIM]

    RULING OF

    UDHIYAH

Te Udhiyah or sacrice is Sunnah Muak-

kadah (a conrmed, never missed, Sunnah)

    and thereore highly recommended to

perorm i able to do so. Some scholars

hold the view it is obligatory.

Te one (not perorming the Hajj)

who intends to oer the sacrice (either

directly or through an agent): Must not

remove anything rom his hair or skin on

his body or cut his nails rom the moment

he makes the intention until the sacrice

    is completed.

Te Prophet said: When you see

the new moon o Dhu l-Hijjah, and one

o you wants to oer a sacriice, let him

    rerain rom (removing anything) rom

    his hair or nails. [MUSLIM]

In another version: Let him not remove

anything o his hair or skin.

    6 CONDITIONS FOR

    THE UDHIYAH

It should be rom one o the anaam

class o animals camels, cattle, sheep

    and goats.

he animal should belong to the

person who is oering the sacrice,

or he should have permission or that

either on the grounds o the Shariah

    or rom the owner.

Te animal must be adult; or camels

this is 5 years old, cattle 2 years old,

sheep 1 year old and jadhah 6 months

old. It is not correct to sacriice an

    It is recommended

    ones frst ood o the

    day o Eid ul-Adha

    be rom the sacrifce.

It should be slaughtered at the time

speciied in the Shariah, which is

anytime ater the Eid prayer on Eid

ul-Adha until the sun sets on the

    13th o Dhul-Hijjah although i it

preerable to hasten in its perormance.

    Slaughtering beore or ater these

times will mean the sacriice is

invalid unless there is an excuse or

its delay, e.g., the animal ran away

with no negligence on his part, and

he did not fnd it until ater the time

was over, or i he delegated someone

to do it on his behal and his deputy

orgot until the time was over.

animal that has not reached maturity

or a sheep less than 6 months old.

It should be ree rom any aults:

    - Obvious sickness

    - Obvious lameness

    - Emaciation that leaves no

    marrow in the bones

No one else should have any rights

to the sacricial animal; the sacrice

o an animal that is held in pledge is

    not valid.

    Reviving Sunnahs that have been

orgotten brings a great deal o

reward, as is indicated by the words

    o the Prophet: Whoever revives

one o my Sunnahs that has died out

ater I am gone, will have a reward

like that o everyone who does it,

    without that detracting rom their

    reward in the slightest.

    USEFUL NOTES

One mans sacriice will suice his

entire amily, no matter how many

wives and children he may have, buthe may oer more than one i he wishes.

Slaughtering is better than giving the

    monetary equivalent in charity because

    the Prophet slaughtered.

Te one who intends to oer sacrice but

removes hair or skin or nails rom the

    body (without excuse or orgetulness)

is not to pay a ransom but must repent

    and seek Allahs orgiveness.

    Slaughtering is better

    than giving the

    monetary equivalent

    in charity because the

    Prophet slaughtered.

Te best sacrice is a camel, then a cow

(i one oers the whole animal), then a

    sheep, then a goat, then one-seventh oa camel, then one-seventh o a cow (i

one shares in a sacricial animal).

Te rulings are the same or men and

    women intending to oer sacrice.

Te one intending to oer sacrice is

not in a state o ihram.

    Abrahamused stones without

hold each stone in place. When

he reached the Black Stone level he

    requested his son Ishmaelto provide

him with a stone to mark the starting

point o tawa (circumambulation). Itwas Angel Gabriel who came with

the Black Stone, which today marks the

    starting point o each tawa.

    Abraham made two openings

without any closing doors. On the north

side o the Kabah he built a sloping

lattice work which is known as al-Hijr.

Historians estimate the age o Abrahams

building to be around 4000 years.

In the years since then the building

    has been reconstructed many times,

oten due to natural disasters. One o

    the rst known reconstructions was

by the Arab tribe known as Jurhum, which lived in Makkah. Ater them,

the eorts o the Amaliqa tribe, and

o Qusay Ibn Kilab, an ancestor o the

    Prophet Muhammad .

by ash oods. It was the tribe o

Quraysh that set about rebuilding it

and they made the intention to use only

lawul money in the construction. Tis

proved to be in short supply, leading to

the building being shortened on the side

adjacent to Hijr Ishmael.Te wooden items or construction were

purchased by the Quraysh tribe rom the

owners o a ship broken into parts at the

    port o Al-Shuaiba. Tey hired a ship

captain to assist them in building it in the

style o building common to the people o

    ash-Sham, in Syria.

When replacing the Black Stone on

the Kabah, the dierent tribes o the

Quraysh all wanted to put the stone

back into place themselves and a dispute

arose. Tey resolved that the next person

to walk into the area would solve this

dispute. It pleased the people o theQuraysh when Muhammad , who was

    known as Al-Amin (the trustworthy),

walked through. He resolved to put

the Black Stone on a large cloth and

summon each o the our tribal leaders

to hold one corner o the cloth; the

    Quraysh rejoiced at this suggestion.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

Say: He is Allah, the Unique.

    Allah, the Sel-Sufcient.

Say: He is Allah, the Unique.

    Allahs uniqueness is realized in

    His sel-sufciency. On the other

hand, all created beings have needs

and are dependent on others to

ulil their needs. Allah is not

in need o any o His creation in

any way, as nothing they can do

can better or benet His already

perect state. Tis attribute o sel-

    suiciency invites the believers

to reect on the purpose and the

goals o their worship. Most people

worship as i they are doing God

a avour. Te purpose o human

creation is to worship Allah because

all human beings have a need to

worship Him. He has no need or

or rom them. Human beings need

to worship and gloriy God because

obedience to divine law is the key

to their success in both this lie and

    the next.

his verse represents Allahsown afrmation o His unique

    monotheism, His inimitable

Unity. hus, the irst verse is

    a command to the Prophet

    (peace and blessings o Allah

    be upon him), and whoever

reads or recites this verse, to

    airm Allahs Unique Unity.

He is one like whom there is noother. Tere are many unities in

this world, but they all are notunique as each unity has others

    similar to them. For example,

there is one Mount Everest, but

    there are other tall mountains

similar to it. In the case o Allah,

there is no other unity similar

to Him. All other unities can be

    divided into parts, while Allah

is unique in His unity and is assuch indivisible.

He does not give birth, nor was He born.

And there is nothing equal to Him.

He Allah does not give birth, becausethere is nothing similar to Him. A child

is made rom portions (sperm and ovum)

o the bodies o its parents which is why

it is similar to its parents in orm and

characteristics. I God gave birth, there

would be another god like Him, which

His uniqueness has already negated. Te

Almighty also rejected the concept o

having a child rom the perspective that

bearing ospring usually requires a emale

partner similar in orm to the male. Allah

also rejected ospring rom the general

perspective that it is not betting, since

to have a child would reduce Him to the

status o His creatures. Tis answers the

question o those who claim that since it

is agreed that God can do anything, He

should be able to have a son i He wished.

It is not betting because it would make

    God like His creatures. Furthermore,

people have children out o a need or help

to survive in this material world or out o

the need or continued existence through

ones progeny. By describing Himsel as

    Sel-Sufcient, Allah also negated this

    possibility.

Nor was He born, subtly rejects thenotion that Jesus was God, because he was

born. For God to be born, He must rst

have not existed, which contradicts the basic

unique divine attribute o eternal existence.

Allah closes the chapter with a restatement o

the opening verse. I God is unique, nothing

can be equal to Him. I nothing is equal to

Him, then He alone is unique. I He alone

is Sel-Sufcient and all creation is in need

o Him, nothing in creation can be equal

to Him. I He does not bear ospring, nordid anyone or anything give birth to Him,

nothing or no one can be equal to Him as

every created being came into existence ater

    a period o non-existence. Every created

being has something similar to it, called its

pair, or something resembling it, called its

equal. I the Creator were rom one or other

o these species He would have an equal and

    a similitude.

Tus, this chapter contains the genealogy

and description o God, the Most Merciul.

It was revealed by Allah to reute belies

attributed to Him by misguided people

    concerning His similitude, bodily orm,

origin and ospring. For example, those

who paint pictures or make statues o Allahare claiming similitude, those who worship

others besides Him claim similitude, and

those who attribute some parts o His

creation to others besides Him claim

similitude. However, nothing is similar to

Him in His Attributes, His Dominion or

    His Divinity.

Tereore, only He alone deserves to be

    worshipped by His creatures.

    What does honesty mean ?

In Islam, Muslims are ordered to be honest

both to themselves and to others. This order

is mentioned in the Holy Quran and the

    sayings o Prophet Muhammadrepeatedly.

Honesty is the opposite o lying,

the opposite o blufng, the opposite

    o hypocrisy, the opposite o

avouritism, and the opposite o deceit.

Honesty implies telling the truth in all

    cases and under all circumstances.

    Honesty implies ulflling the promise,

    whether written or oral.

Honesty implies giving the right advice

to the one who asks or it.

Honesty implies doing ones work as

sincerely and as per ectly as possible.

Honesty means giving every person his

due rights without his asking or them.

Honesty means doing the right thing in

the right way at the right time.

Honesty implies the right selection o

personnel and the r ight promotion o

personnel, i.e., selection by merit and

promotion by merit, not by temper or

    avouritism or personal relations.

Honesty is a blanket term that covers

a wide range o traits; telling the truth,

sincerity in work, carry ing out duties,

    ulflling ones word, being objective

    in judgement, and making objective

    decisions.

Honesty implies carrying out duties as

ully as possible, whether the person is

    supervised or not.

    Your righteous companion will

be like a good conscience to you,

always looking out or your benet,

guiding you to that which pleases

    Allah with gentle admonition.

    Your righteous companion will

be one who wants to accompany

you not or worldly reasons, asking

rom your wealth or wanting what

you have rom status or potential

that you increase in aith and work

    Your righteous companion will

Is there a better companion that

you could want than the believer

    or would you risk accompanying

those whose outlook is the temporal

enjoyment o this world who would

not hesitate to lead you to the

Make dua to Allah that He

Awoman came to the Prophet andsaid:A woman prays a lot in addition

to the obligatory prayers, asts a lot in

addition to the obligatory asts and gives

too much charity in addition to the zakah

but she harms her neighbour; what is her

condition? Te Prophet said: She is in

    Hell-Fire.Te woman then asked, And

what then about the woman who prays only

the obligatory prayers, asts the obligatorymonth and gives the obligatory zakah but

doesnt harm her neighbour? He, She is

    in Paradise.

O reader, dear Muslim, do not be

conused. Tis Hadeeth will erase the

doubt rom your mind. Te Prophet

said: Te one who is bankrupt among my

Ummah is the one who will come on the

Day o Resurrection with prayer, astingand zakah to his credit, but he will come

having slandered one person and shed the

blood o another and wrongully consumed

the wealth o a third, so (his victims) will

be given some o his hasanaat (good deeds),

and i his hasanaat run out beore the score

is settled, some o their sins will be taken

and thrown onto him, and he will be

    thrown into Hell.

Consider that the one who engagesin all the obligatory acts o worship, in

their proper time and manner and couples

it with requent observance o voluntary

acts is in the Hell-Fire is like the water

container, ed at one end by the rivers and

oceans o the world but spotted within it

are little holes Never will it retain the

water. Te holes represent ones looking at

women, insulting people, harassing people, mocking people etc. (the minor sins).

Te Prophet said: I certainly know

people o my Ummah who will come on the

Day o Resurrection with good deeds like

the mountains o ihaamah, but Allah will

    make them like scattered dust.

I you have saved money would you

like to waste it? O Muslim. Te reward

or the Muslims is greater than all thetreasures o this world. Paradise can only

be obtained through ones eorts in this

lie and then the mercy o Allah, azza

wa jall. Dont make such great eorts,

going hungry and tired in asting and

prayer, go to waste through disregard or

making direct contact with the body must be removed

(this includes, or example, nail polish) unless it is a

    USEFUL NOTES:

There is no dierence between the male and the emale in the manner o perorming wudu

You have to say, Bismillah but i you orget it at the start you may say it during and i

you remember upon completion then there is no harm

THE ADHKAR UPON COMPLETION OF WUDU

    IS TO SAY:

Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa

shareeka lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadanabduhu wa Rasooluhu. ( I bear witness that none

has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who

has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad

is His slave and His Messenger). [Muslim]

    Allahummajalnee minat-tawwaabeena wajalnee

    Subhaanaka Allaahumma wa bihamdika, ash-

    hadu an laa ilaaha illaa Anta, astaghfruka waatoobu ilayk. (Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise;

I bear witness that there is none worthy o worship

but You. I seek Your orgiveness and turn to You in

    Eating camel meat.

Anything that requires ghusl invalidates wudu.

    THINGS THAT DONT NULLIFY WUDU:

    Vomiting.

Touching najasah (impurity) but the najasah must

    be removed.

Laughing but it breaks the prayer.
