Basic Port Assumptions

weather window. She can have a Grand Opening set on a certain day.

PORT AND BERTHING CRITERIA: FROM VESSEL OPERATIONS
STANDPOINT• Draft: CWM will likely draw in excess of 16’.• Accessible from main harbor with not more than 1 tug
and two assisting vessels.• Protection from wind• Access by fire and rescue personnel• Nearby berthing for ROANN• Possible nearby berthing for escort tug.• Suitable dock construction and maintenance.• Electrical distribution• Non emergency vehicle access: Supplies, exhibits,
sales, catering.• 2 ramps will be in use.

exhibit, food service, sponsor tents. Tent size??• Parking within a reasonable walking distance.• Bus parking within a reasonable walking
distance.• Safe neighborhood after dark.

•Excellent dock (225’)•Close to entrance to harbor•Great visibility from all of Newport•Great visibility from NYYC with direct launch service•Plenty of parking•Lots of room for tents•Party “patio” along water nearby•Eisenhower House for events (run by state)•Relationship with Museum of Yachting•Great public access•Adjacent to Block Island Ferry dock•Public restrooms closeby
Cons•Not in downtown (could have a tent in town near a launch to promote to visitors)•Need to check when big summer events are held (Jazz fest, folk fest, etc)•No showers for crew (maybe Seamen’s Church, ASTA or Sail Newport could help)•Dock fees?

• Also a ferry from Plymouth
Provincetown
• What are we doing there?
• If expect crowds to come aboard, we will need a barge there to offload them and a staircase from the barge onto the ship
• If we expect to only board daysail pax, then we can be on a mooring with staircase from water.
Boston
• Fan Pier at Moakley Courthouse– Across a foot bridge from
downtown– Public bathrooms– No garbage, water, or power– Parking lots available, but
expensive– Room for parties– Ramp down to good floating dock– Tall Ship pier, No charge

• Need to get a lot of them to put in the hold and use as storage for:– Food– Bosuns supplies– etc
Deck Layout for Comfort
• Main Hatch could have table / benches
• Workbench could layout lunch buffet
• Will need foldable benches/chairs to put on deck during sail and stow below during port visits

• Liferings aft of Port Head, fwd of companionway (P&S)

• Tiller box as chart table– Build a box / rack for pencils/dividers etc

Accommodations
• Day cabin stays as an exhibit• Captain in cabin aft• Next fwd cabin has two bunks for two mates• Next fwd cabin has 2 bunks with 2 bunks in
companionway across from it.• Boatsteerers cabin can hold 4 people in 6 bunks• Cooper Cabin can hold 2 people in 4 bunks• Focsle has 24 bunks (need to make more
seachests –currently have 8 there) need mattresses and curtains and seabags for each bunk
Heads
• Where will they go?– port fwd locker– Port aft near wheel (this has room for sink
too)
• Also could have one in storage room in tween decks
• Research incinolet heads
Sinks
• Research portable sinks
Power
• Will put generator in the hold – Power bilge pumps and firefighting– Charge nav batteries– Power lighting
• Will box it with sound proof insulation
• Need to determine more about lighting
Ramps
• Maybe no floating docks• Not handicapped accessible• Need freeboards of docks and ship(!) to design
ramps• Need to determine tide range in all ports• Get Dan to look at ramp design / tidal
range/bulwark height/dock height• Will need to determine width of docks• Maybe a ramp for access from water (while
moored) (staircase)
Barge
• Likely need one in P-town
• Need to determine staircase from it to boat
Ground Support
• Box Van
• Flatbed trailer for ramps?
• Food service trailer
• Minivan for crew use
