Power up your computer

• Laptop:– Power cord must be connected to outlet or battery

should be charged

• Desktop/Tower:– Power cord must be connected to outlet for the

computer and the monitor

• Press the Power button to start your computer

Folder icon: Again, the icon for all folders is similar. The folder name will be different for different folders!

Find that Cursor!

• Trick: Shake the mouse to find where the cursor is currently positioned!

• When you move your mouse, the cursor moves in the same direction!

• On laptops, a trackpad, trackball or pointer is sometimes used for pointing

Common Cursors

• Mouse cursor / Pointer

– Shows were your mouse is currently pointing

• Hand cursor

– Changes to this when your mouse is on

something that can be clicked (e.g. link)

• Hour-glass cursor

– Tells you that the computer is busy

• Left click

• Clicking the left mouse button twice quickly is called “Double click”

• Single click usually means “I just want to select an object”

• If you want to see the Window for a program to come to the top, press the icon on the taskbar.

–Useful if you have lots of Windows open or if you had minimized the program

Creating a New Folder

1. Right-click on any existing folder

2. Select New (using left-click)

3. Select Folder (using left-click)

• Folders keep your information organized!

• Tips: – Don’t put all your files in one folder

– Put files in the appropriate folder

Right-Click on a File

• Depending on the file, you will get different options

• Common operations:– Delete the file (it will go to the recycle bin)

– Rename the file

– Move the file (select cut, go to the folder you want, right-click again and select paste)

– Copy the file (select copy, go to the folder you want, right-click again and select paste)

Dragging files between folders

1. Open the target folder

2. Open the folder that has the file you wish to move

3. Press the left mouse button on the file (keep holding the button)

4. Move the mouse to the target folder – this will drag or move the file as well
