Evam me sutamThus have I heard:ekam samayam BhagavâOn one occasion the Blessed One,Sâvatthiyam viharati Jetavane, Anâthapindikassa ârâmewas living at Anathapindika's monastery at Jeta Grove, near Savatthi.Tena kho pana samayena, Sâvatthiyam aññataro bhikkhūAt that time, at Savatthi, a certain monkahinâ dattho kâlakato hotihad died bitten by a snake.

Atho kho sambahulâ bhikkhū Thereupon many monksyena Bhavagâ, ten'upasankamimsu, upasankamitvâapproached the Buddha,Bhagavantam abhivâdetvâ ekamantam nisidimsuand having paid homage to Him, sat at one side.Ekamantam nissinnâ kho te bhikkhū So seated, those monks spoke thusBhagavantam etadavocumto the Blesed One:

Idha bhante Sâvatthiyam aññâtaro bhikkhū"Venerable Sir, a certain monk at Savatthiahinâ dattho kâlakato hoti had died bitten by a snake."

Naha nūna so bhikkhave bhikkhū"Assuredly, monks", said the Buddha.cattâri ahirâjakulâni mettena cittena phari"That monk has not suffused with thoughts of loving-kindnessSacehi so bhikkhave bhikkhūto the four royal tribes of snakes.cattâri ahirâjakulâni, mettena cittena phareyyaHad he done so,nahi so bhikkhave bhikkhūthat monk would not haveahinâ dattho kâlam kareyya died of snake-bite.

Katamâni cattâri ahirâjakulâni What are the four royal tribes of snakes?Virūpakkham ahirâjakulam The royal tribe of snakes called Virūpakkha.Erâpatham ahirâjakulam The royal tribe of snakes called Erâpatha.Chabyâputtam ahirâjakulam The royal tribe of snakes called Chabyâputta.Kanhâ gotamakam ahirâjakulam The royal tribe of snakes called Kanhâgotamaka.naha nūna so bhikkhave bhikkhūMonks, that monk did not suffuseimâni cattâri ahirâjakulâni, mettena cittena phariwith thoughts of loving-kindness to these four royal tribes of snakes.

Sace hi so bhikkhave bhikkhū, imâni cattâri ahirâjakulâniIf indeed, O monks, that monk would have suffused mettena cittena phareyya, na hi so bhikkhave bhikkhūthese four royal tribes of snakes with a loving mind, O monks, that monkahinâ dattho kâlam kareyya would not have died being bitten by a snake.Anujânâmi bhikkhave, imâni cattâri ahirâjakulâniMonks, I enjoin you to suffuse with thoughtsmettena cittena pharittum

of loving-kindness to these four royal tribes of snakesattaguttiyâ attarakkhâya attaparattâyâ tifor your safety, for your perservation, and for your protection.

Idam'avoca BhagavâSo said the Blessed One.Idam vatvâ Sugato athâparam etada'vaco satthâHaving thus spoken, the Welcome One (Sugata), further said:

1. Virūpakkehi me mettam "May I have loving-kindness towards Virūpakkhas.Mettam Erâpathehi meTowards Erâpathas may I have loving-kindness.Chabyâputtehi me mettam May I have loving-kindness towards Chabyâputtas.Mettam Kanhâ-gotamakehi caTowards Kanhâgotamakas also, may I have loving-kindness."

2. Apâdakkehi me mettam "May I have loving-kindness towards the footless.Mettam dipâdakkehi meAnd towards bipeds, too, may I have loving-kindness.Catuppadehi me mettam May I have loving-kindness towards quadrupeds.Mettam bahuppadehi meAnd towards the many feet also, may I have loving-kindness."

3. Mâ mam apâdako himsi "Let not the footless do me harm. Mâ mam himsi dipâdakoLet not the two feet do me harm.Mâ mam catuppado himsi Let not the four feet do me harm.Mâ mam himsi bahuppado Nor those endowed with many feet do me harm."

4. Sabbe sattâ, sabbe pânâ "All beings, all living creatures, Sabbe bhutâ ca kevalâMay all who have become, in their entirely.Sabbe bhadrâni passantuMay good fortune befall them all.Mâ kañi pâpamâgamâMay not the least harm befall on them."

Appamâno Buddho, appamâno Dhammo, appamâno SanghoInfinite is the Buddha, infinite is the Dhamma, infinite is the Sangha.Pamânavantâni sirimsapâni ahi vicchikâFinite are creeping creatures - snakes, scorpions, centipedes,satapadī, unnânabhī, sarabhū, mūsikâ spiders, lizards and rats.Katâ me rakkhâ, katâ me parittâI have guarded myself, I have made my protection.Patikkamantu bhūtâniDepart from me, ye beings.So'ham namo Bhavgavato I bow to the Blessed Onenamo sattannam Sammâ Sambuddhânan'ti and to the seven Supreme Buddhas.
