Alabaster: AAlabaster: A PrimerPrimerBy Ronnie Rosenbach

A few years ago, the sales manager of alighting manufacturer interrupted a meeting to takean urgent phone call. The caller was a frantic sales-woman in a lighting showroom: "I have a customerhere who loves your alabaster lighting and I needto know quick. Alabaster - where does it comefrom: the mountain or the sea? "

The real answer is neither. Alabaster ishydrated calcium sulfate (CaSo42H2O), a crys-talline mineral which in a dehydrated form is com-mon gypsum. Most of this mineral which is quar-ried for use in lighting comes from alluvialdeposits near the banks of the Ebro River in Spain.Other alabaster deposits are found in centuries-oldquarries in Italy, near Pisa. However, what littlealabaster remains there is very difficult to extract,as are other minor deposits in other countries.

There are three major types of alabaster:the opaque, chalky stone which is ground up andused in gypsum or plaster: the escaglione, a semi-transparent type which resembles rock crystal, firstused by the Italians; and the third, translucent vari-ety used for the bowls and shades imported fortoday's lighting. While alabaster occurs naturally ina rainbow of colors, the translucent type used forlarge lighting fixture diffusers is white with ran-domly-occurring irregular veining in mottled grey-brown tones. Pieces used for lamp bases and othersmall parts might be cut from any of the threetypes.

After asking what alabaster is, the nextquestion asked by both retailer and consumer is;"Why is alabaster expensive?" The answer lies inhow and where it is found as well as how it isworked.

Alabaster is found in rocks surroundedby other minerals within veins of variable depth(6"-20") in which it occurs. Since alabaster in itsnatural state deteriorates from exposure toextremes of temperature and weather, surface ornear-surface veins are not worked. In order to findusable stone, therefore, heavy earth-moving anddigging equipment is necessary just to find thedeeper veins which average only 13" in depth.Compare that with granite or marble, for example,of which there are literally entire mountains, tobegin to understand the difficulty and high cost ofquarrying alabaster. Add to that the high percent-age of waste and the limited supply of the translu-cent stone and it's not hard to appreciate alabaster'svalue.

Like many materials that we assume arerecent discoveries, alabaster has been around for avery long time. In fact, ancient Egyptian alabastercarvings are on display at the MetropolitanMuseum of Art in New York. Imagine, Cleopatramight have poured wine for Mark Antony from analabaster vessel. We know both the ancient Chineseand Greeks also carved alabaster; modern Greeksstill use it for floor tiles.

There are two other frequently-asked

questions: Why can't a manufacturer who usesalabaster guarantee that fixtures will match? Andhow can one tell the difference between a vein andheat discoloration?

The answer to the first question is fairlysimple once one understands how alabaster is quar-ried. It is scooped out of the ground with a hugesteam shovel, not cut in a straight-sided block, as isdone with marble. The factory where the alabasteris worked receives a pile of rocks of many sizesand shapes. Many of these rocks yield only onelarge piece and each one is literally one-of-a-kind.Some pieces may be completely white while othersmay have heavy veining. A sales person whounderstands this can enhance the desirability ofpurchasing a natural material that is the real thing -and looks it.

Identifying a piece of alabaster that isdiscoloring due to exposure to the intense heat of alight source is easy. too, once one knows what tolook for. Remember that the type of alabaster usedin lighting fixtures is translucent and you have theanswer: the telltale spot that is heat-affected willfirst turn an opaque, chalky white. That's becausethe heat is causing the water (the H2O part) in thestone to evaporate from the inside of the stone out-wards. Thus, if there is a brown spot on the outsideof the piece before the inside has turned opaquewhite, chances are you are looking at a vein and nota discoloration.

The rocks containing the alabaster, vary-ing in size and weight from 30 lbs. to almost a ton,are delivered to the factory. In order to get at the"corazon" or heart of the alabaster rock, pneumatichammers are used to chip off the unwanted outerlayer made up of other minerals and soil. The larg-er cleaned rocks may then be cut into slices of dif-ferent thicknesses which are determined by theheight of the pieces to be produced.

Next, solid cylinders, their sizes dictatedby the diameter of the finished piece, are drawnfrom the slices. A metal disc is then glued into thecenter of the cylinders, which can easily weigh 200pounds or more. A hoist is used to lift the cylindersonto a lathe which is used to cut out the desiredshapes.

Until this point, up to 75 percent of therock, which is bought by weight, much like we buybeef, has been wasted. It's something like buying a16 oz. T-bone steak and, after trimming the fat anddeboning it, ending up with 4 oz. of edible meat.An alabaster bowl weighing 50 lbs. may havecome from a half-ton rock. Sounds pretty low tech,doesn't it? It is, but this is where the craftsmen'sancient technique comes in.

Alabaster is a relatively soft stone, whichmeasures 2.5 on the Mohs scale, the accepted stan-dard for measuring the relative hardness of stone(granite rates about 6.5). Like other stones it can beintricately carved, but larger pieces of alabaster areusually worked in more of a woodworking than a

lapidary process. The stonecutter's art makes thebest use of stone - each one reveals its unique qual-ity only after the heart is uncovered.

A high percentage of the stones shatteron the lathe since the veins sometimes cannot with-stand the machine's vibrations. An expert stonecut-ter can reduce the breakage, but many pieces stillend up unusable.

Once the desired shape emerges, thepiece is ready for sanding. Four different grades ofsandpaper are used ranging from very rough tovery fine. It is this last, steel wool type that leavesthe sensuously smooth surface that is so attractive.

The piece is now sprayed with a coat ofpolyurethane to close the pores and prevent deteri-oration of the surface. For those who can't resisttampering with nature, it is at this point that colorcan be added to the spray to tint the stone.

Consumers frequently want to know howthey clean alabaster, once they've bought analabaster fixture. The answer is simple: use a damp- not wet - soft cloth and gently wipe the piececlean. Above all, never use detergents or abrasives.

Alabaster has attracted lighting fixturedesigners from the beginning of the early electricperiod. The natural translucence of the stone wasthe ideal material to soften the harsh, glaring lightproduced by the first light bulbs while hiding theelectrical components as well. Then, as now, analabaster shade covered a multitude of sins.

The furniture and accessories designersof the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods in Europewere admirers of the distinctive beauty of alabasterand lovingly incorporated stone diffusers into theirlighting designs. A Sunday afternoon spent explor-ing the antique furniture shops on Melrose in WestHollywood or in New York's SoHo district almostalways reveals a few original antique alabaster fix-tures.

World War II saw the decline of the moreluxurious materials, including alabaster, of the 20'sand 30's. It wasn't until the early 1980's that a fewprescient U.S. lighting manufacturers rediscoveredthe beauty and almost limitless applications ofalabaster. While considered a fad at first, alabasterlighting components are now being utilized by agrowing number of manufacturers.

Alabaster has made the transition from astyle to a material, which can be used in almost anyapplication in which glass has been used. The onemajor difficulty - that of sensitivity to intense heat- can be readily overcome by careful design.
