The Holy Father speaks… The Lord seeks everyone, He wants everyone to feel the warmth of His mercy and His love. If we open our hearts to mercy and we seek forgiveness with a fraternal embrace, we proclaim before the world that it is possible to overcome evil with good. God searches for you, even if you don’t search for Him. God loves you, even if you have forgotten Him. God looks for beauty in you, even if you think you have uselessly squandered all your talents. Let us ask the Lord to grant us the awareness that we cannot truly be Christians unless we walk with the Holy Spirit, unless we let the Holy Spirit be the protagonist of our life.

From the Pastor's Desk....

Please don't neglect the pledges you made for the Annual Catholic Appeal and the Generations of Faith Campaign. Last year we didn't make either goal, despite pledges which were made at the beginning. Aside from the fact that we did not "make" our share of these goals, the parish had to pay the difference of the pledges and the payments from our own savings. Let's not repeat that again this year. As you can see, I am using our own savings to do some necessary repairs and cleaning up in the Basilica. We have already cleaned and polished our main doors($25,000), other bronze items like the gates to the Sanctuary have been restored ($23,000), and the large windows on the facade of the Basilica were given new aluminum frames to replace the old wooden frames which were always leaking($63,000). The damage which water leaks have caused over the years was very costly. Now we won't have to worry about that for a long time. I am trying my best to keep the Basilica in good shape. It is a sacred place which belongs to generations to come. Your financial help enables me to do this and I thank you. Please continue to be extra generous in your weekly collection donations .

The Basilica’s Jewels On Display At all the morning Masses on Mother's Day, May

12th, the special jeweled Crowns of our parish will be placed again on display in front altar for all

to adore.

At the end of each Mass you are all invited to come up to the altar to see them better, and to

take your own pictures of them.

History of the jewels… Before the completion of the construction of Regina Pacis, in 1949, after the blessing of the Cornerstone of the church, Msgr. Cioffi asked the people to donate their own personal jewelry in order to make a crown for the painting of Regina Pacis.

As a way of thanking Mary for the safe return of their sons and daughters, the parishioners began to donate wedding rings, bracelets, necklaces, lockets and other types of precious jewels to the project.

The jewels were given to the firm of DeNatale Brothers in Manhattan so that the crowns and stars could be made. It took 3 years to make them. When they were finished, Msgr. Cioffi and Mr. DeNatale went to Rome and had a special audience with Pope Pius XII asking him to personally bless them. The Pope’s secretary at the time was Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, who himself would later become Pope Paul VI. On returning home from Rome, Msgr. Cioffi scheduled events leading up to the Coronation itself. One such event was a “Coronation Banquet” held at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel which was attended by 3,000 people.

Lost and Returned One week later, during a wedding, Father James Russo noticed something strange. A six-inch hole had been cut into the gate that protected the altar painting. And the security system was off. Someone had stolen the crowns.

The people of Regina Pacis were horrified. The crime made the front page of the Eagle, and Time magazine reported the theft, making it a national story. Parishioners started a collection to replace the crowns. Brooklynites wrote editorials in the paper calling the thieves immoral. The children of St. Rosalia's school prayed each morning for the return of the crowns. A symbol of peace in post-war America had been taken away, and no evidence had been left behind.

And then, after eight days, a mysterious package arrived at the rectory. Inside were the crowns, almost perfectly intact! Father Cioffi burst into the 10:00am mass the next day and announced their miraculous return. Parishioners were overwhelmed: some applauded, some prayed, some cried, and three fainted.

What Gifts are received at Confirmation?

Imagine you’re on a game show and the million dollar question in the Confirmation category is:

"Name the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit?"

Would you be able to name them? Would you walk away a millionaire? If you’d be completely stumped or if you could only name a few, you’re not alone. Many of us have difficulty recalling what these seven gifts that we received when we were confirmed are — especially if we received the Sacrament of Confirmation a long time ago! It’s important for all Catholics to be reminded of these marvelous gifts bestowed upon us, and more importantly, to ponder how these gifts help us live a virtuous life — the life God intends us to live. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. As Catholics, we are given these gifts on the day we received the Sacrament of Confirmation. When the bishop lays his hands on the confirmandi (person being confirmed) he prays the following: "All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen." Then, the bishop makes the sign of the cross with holy chrism on the confirmandi’s forehead, and says, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit." As an exercise for the EASTER SEASON, we will be focusing on one of the gifts on the Holy Spirit each week. Each of the Holy Spirit’s gifts are personal and often shaped by the individual person. As you read each gift, think about how that gift is present in your life. Perhaps you will reflect on different ways to use each of the Holy Spirit’s special gifts. If you practice this exercise, you will have gained a sense of how God, the Holy Spirit, is present in your life. And the exercise might well serve as a preparation for opening God’s final gift - everlasting life in the risen Lord.

Confirmation Gift of Understanding

St. Thomas Aquinas said, "In this very life, when the eye of the spirit is purified by the gift of understanding,

one can in a certain way see God." The gift of understanding grants us the ability to comprehend the Scriptures, the messages they hold, and the meaning of Christ’s teachings. In a way, this gift goes hand-in-

hand with the gift of faith: the more we understand the teachings of the Church, the more our faith is strengthened.

Reflection: Today I will reread or listen to the Bible passages from Sunday’s liturgy. Prayer: God of Understanding, your inspired words reveal your mysterious plan for the world. May your Holy Spirit of Understanding help us to interpret your will in the daily events of our lives.
