GRAMMAR Appendix
Getting StartedPresent Simple / Present Continuous aditz-denboren arteko aldea• Present Simple ohiko ekintzez hitz egiteko erabiltzen da;
Present Continuous, kontrara, hitz egiteko unean gertatzen ari dena deskribatzeko.
I usually eat salad, but today I’m eating lasagna. (Normalean entsalada jaten dut, baina gaur lasagna jaten ari naiz.)
• Present Simple aldiarekin honako denbora-esamoldeak erabiltzen dira maiz: every day / week / year (egunero / astero / urtero), once / twice a year (urtean behin / bitan), on + asteko eguna pluralean, etab. Present Continuous aditz-denborarekin, aldiz, honako hauek: now (orain), at the moment (une honetan), today (gaur), these days (gaur egun), etab. Guztiak perpausaren hasieran nahiz bukaeran jar daitezke, baina ohikoagoak dira bukaeran.
• Present Simple aldiarekin, maiztasun-adberbio hauek ere sarri erabiltzen dira: always (beti), usually (normalean), often (maiz), sometimes (batzuetan), never (inoiz ez), etab. Horiek aditzaren aurrean kokatzen dira, to be aditzaren kasuan izan ezik, orduan, aditzaren atzean jartzen baitira.
• Present Simple aldia etorkizunari dagokio, ordutegiei edo egitarauei lagunduz doanean.
The train leaves at 2 o’clock. (Trena ordubiak puntuan aterako da.)
• Present Continuous aldia erabil daiteke, baita ere, etorkizun hurbilean gauzatuko diren asmo pertsonalak iragartzeko, aurrez zehaztuak direlako horiek. Kasu horretan, denborazko esamolde hauekin agertu ohi da: soon (laster, gutxi barru), later (gero, aurrerago), tomorrow (bihar), tonight (gaur gauean), next week / month / year (datorren astean/hilabetean/urtean), etab.
Susan is coming later. (Susan gero etorriko da.)
Aditz “estatikoak”Aditz estatikoak erabiltzen dira gustuak, sentimenduak eta desioak, buruko ekintzak, jabetza eta pertzepzioa adierazteko. Egoerak adierazten dituzte, eta ez ekintzak; horregatik, ez dira Present Continuous aldiarekin erabiltzen. Present Continuous aldiarekin erabiltzen direnean, esangura desberdina dute. I think this is a nice restaurant.
(Gaueko klub atsegina dela hau uste dut.) I’m thinking about travelling around the world. (Parisera bidaian joatea darabilkit buruan.)
Contraste Past Simple / Past Continuous• Past Simple aditz-denborak adierazten du ekintza
esaldian zehazturiko denboran hasi eta bukatu zela; Past Continuous aditz-denborak, kontrara, iraganean gertatzen ari ziren ekintza luzeak deskribatzen ditu.
He did his homework last Monday. (Joan den astelehenean egin zituen eskolako lanak.)
He was doing his homework yesterday afternoon. (Atzo arratsalde osoan eskolako lanak egiten aritu zen.)
• Past Simple denborarekin when erabiltzen da; Past Continuous denborarekin, berriz, while edo as juntagailuak.
We were listening to the news when he arrived. (Albisteak entzuten ari ginen Peter iritsi zenean.)
While / As we were listening to the news, he arrived. (Albisteak entzuten ari ginenean, Peter iritsi zen.)
• Past Simple eta Past Continuous aditz-denborekin erabiltzen diren denbora-esamolde ohikoenak hauek dira: esaldi bukaeran ago (orain dela) daramatenak, last night / week (bart, joan den astean), at + ordua, on + asteko eguna / data, in + urtea, yesterday (atzo), etab. Guztiak perpausaren hasieran nahiz bukaeran jar daitezke, baina ohikoagoak dira bukaeran.

Adjektiboen konparatiboaBi gauza, animalia edo pertsona konparatzeko adjektiboak maila konparatiboan erabiliko ditugu.• Nagusitasun konparaketa (baino …-ago) erabiltzen da bi
gauza, animalia edo pertsona erkatzeko, batak bestea ezaugarriren batean gainditzen duela adieraziz. Egoki osatzeko berau, kontuan izan behar dugu darabilgun adjektiboaren luzera:
1. Silaba bakarrekoa edo y bukaera duen bikoa bada, laburtzat jotzen da, eta -er bukaera gehituko diogu. Ondoren, than partikula eramango du. The red dress is cheaper than the blue one. (Soineko gorria urdina baino merkeagoa da.)
Honako kasu hauetan, adjektiboak aldaketak jasaten ditu -er gehitzean:
- Silaba bakarrekoa izanda, bokala + kontsonantea baditu amaieran, kontsonante hori bikoiztu egiten da: thin - thinner big - bigger
- Kontsonantea + y amaieradun bi silabakoa bada, y hori i batez ordezten da: crazy - crazier lucky - luckier
- l bukaeraduna bada, hizki hori bikoizten zaio: cruel - crueller
- e mutuaz amaitzen bada, -r bakarrik gehitzen zaio: nice - nicer
2. Bi silaba edo gehiago baditu adjektiboak, luzea da, eta orduan konparaketa honela eratzen da: more + adjektiboa + than. My trainers are more comfortable than yours. (Nire kiroletako oinetakoak zureak baino erosoagoak dira.)
• Gutxiagotasun-konparaketa less + adjektiboa + than (ez... bezain) egituraz eratzen da.
The book is less popular than the film. (Liburua ez da pelikula bezain ezaguna.)
• Berdintasun-konparaketa honela eratzen da: (not) as + adjektiboa + as ((ez) bezain + adjektiboa).
My office is not as large as hers. (Nire bulegoa ez da harena bezain handia.)
Adjektiboen superlatiboa• Pertsona, gauza edo animalia bi baino gehiago erkatzeko
eta bat besteetatik nabarmentzen dela adierazteko erabiltzen da. Adjektiboaren aurretik the artikulua kokatuko dugu, eta hemen ere kontuan izan behar dugu adjektiboaren luzera:
1. Motza bada, -est amaiera gehituko diogu, adjektibo konparatiboaren -er amaiera osatzeko ikusi ditugun ortografia-arau berberak jarraituz. Paul is the strongest boy in the class. (Paul da nire gelako mutilik indartsuena.)
2. Luzea bada, aurrean the most kokatuko dugu. This is the most elegant shirt in the shop. (Hau da dendako alkandorarik apainena.)
• Superlatiboak, ondoren, in, of eta on preposizioak eraman ditzake.
She is the best actress of all / on TV. (Guztien artean / Telebistako antzezlerik ezagunena da bera.)
• Norbait edo zerbait ezaugarriren batean besteak baino gutxiago dela adierazteko, the least + adjektiboa erabiliko dugu.
This is the least interesting book in the library. (Hau da liburutegiko interes gutxien eskaintzen duen liburua.)
Adjektibo irregularrakInolako araurik jarraitzen ez dutenez, buruz ikasi behar dira horien konparatibozko eta superlatibozko formak.

too ... / (not) ... enough• Too adjektiboen aurrean joaten da, adjektiboak
adierazten duen ezaugarria gehiegizkoa dela azalduz. These earrings are too expensive for me.
(Belarritako hauek garestiegiak dira niretzat.)• Kontrara, enough adjektiboen ondoren kokatzen da, eta
“aski” edo “nahiko” esangura du. This pub is lively enough for us.
(Taberna hau nahikoa bizia da guretzat.) Eta not + adjektiboa + enough egiturak “ez behar
bezainbeste” adiera du. This place is not peaceful enough to study.
(Leku hau ez da behar bezain lasaia ikasteko.) He didn’t feel strong enough to compete in the race.
(Ez nintzen behar bezainbeste beteta sentitu bazkalondoren.)
Adberbioen konparaketa• Modu-adberbioek ekintza nola burutu den deskribatzen
dute. How ... ? (Nola... ?) galdetzaileaz hasitako galderak erantzuten dira berauekin.
Gehienak dagokion adjektiboari -ly gehituz osatzen dira. They eat slowly. (Poliki jaten dute.)
Adjektiboa kontsonante + y bukatzen bada, y horren ordez i bat jartzen da, eta gero -ly eransten zaio. It all ended happily. (Dena zoriontsu amaitu zen.)
• Adberbioen konparatiboak bi ekintza erkatzeko balio du, eta honela eratzen da: more / less + adberbioa + than. You listened to it more carefully than I did. (Nik baino arreta handiagoarekin entzun zenuen.)
• As + adberbioa + as egituraren bitartez, bi ekintza aldi berean gauzatzen direla adierazten da. We ran as fast as you. (Zuk bezain azkar egin genuen korrika.)
Adberbio irregularrakAraurik jarraitzen ez dutenez, buruz ikasi behar dira adberbioa eta honen konparaketa-forma.

UniT 2Erlatibozko perpausakEsaldi nagusian aipatzen den aurrekariaz informazio gehigarria ematen duten menpeko esaldiak dira, eta erlatibozko izenordain hauen bidez sartzen dira: who, which, where, when, whose eta that.
Erlatibozko esaldi murrizgarriakAurrekaria identifikatzeko oinarrizko informazioa ematen dute. Erlatibozko izenordainak menpeko esaldiaren subjektu edo osagarri izan daitezke. Osagarri funtzioa badute, honako izenordain hauek kendu egin daitezke: who, which, when eta that.• Who: aurrekaria pertsona denean erabiltzen da; bere
ordez that erabil daiteke. He is the actor who / that plays the role of Henry VIII.

She’s the girl (who / that) I invited to the party. (Bera da festara gonbidatu nuen neska.)
Hizkuntza formalean, batzuetan, whom erabiltzen da who-ren ordez, erlatibozko esaldiaren osagarri denean.
That’s the boy whom I met yesterday. (Mutil hori da atzo ezagutu nuena.)

the summer. (Windsor jauregia da errege-familiak uda pasatzen duen tokia.)
• When: aurrekaria denbora-nozioa denean erabiltzen da. Bere ordez that erabiltzen da, honako izen hauen ondoren doanean: day, week edo year.It was the year (when / that) she married the king. (Erregearekin ezkondu zen urtea zen hura.)
• Whose: aurrekaria pertsona denean erabiltzen da. Jabetza adierazten du.
She was the queen whose husband was assassinated. (Hura zen senarra erail zioten erregina.)
Erlatibozko esaldi murrizgarriakErlatibozko esaldi murrizgarriek aurrekaria identifikatzeko beharrezkoa ez den informazioa eransten dute. Koma bidez bereizten dira, who, which, where, when eta whose erlatibozko izenordainekin eratzen dira, eta ezin dira kendu edo ezta haien ordez that erabili ere.
Paul, who you met yesterday, is in hospital. (Paul, atzo ezagutu zenuena, ospitalean dago.)
some / any / no partikulekin osatutako konposatuakErlatibozko perpausetan erabiltzen dira normalean. Gogoan izan, esaldiko subjektu baldin badira, aditza singularrean joango dela.• Some erabilita osatzen dira someone (norbait),

Reported questionsIngelesez bi motatako galderak daude:• Yes / No questions motakoak, hots, “bai” edo “ez” batekin
erantzun daitezkeenak. Era honetako galderak zehar-estilora aldatzeko ask erabiliko dugu, eta ondoren if edo whether partikula. Orain galderak perpaus arrunt izatera pasatu direnez, ez dago subjektu-aditz arteko hurrenkera-aldaketarik, ez dago galdera-ikurrik, ez eta komatxorik ere.
“Do you recycle?” she said. She asked if / whether we recycled. (Birziklatzen genuen galdetu zigun.)
• Wh- questions motakoak ezin dira “bai” edo “ez” batekin erantzun. Galdetzaile batekin hasten direnak ditugu horiek (what, who, where, when, why, whose, etab.), eta zehar-estilora pasatzerakoan, if edo whether partikulen tokian kokatuko dugu galdetzaile hori, aurretik ask aditza iraganean dutela. Jarraian subjektua eta aditza joango dira, eta alde batera utziko ditugu galdera-ikurra nahiz komatxoak.
“What are you doing to save water?” Jon said. Jon asked what I was doing to save water. (Jonek galdetu zion zer ari zen egiten ura aurrezteko.)
Zehar-estiloko galderek ziur ez gauden edo ez dakigun zerbait adieraz dezakete. She wanted to know / wondered why people still used
disposable products. (Jakin nahi zuen / Galdetzen zuen jendeak zergatik erabiltzen zituen oraindik behin erabiltzeko produktuak.)
Reported orders / requests / offersAgindu bat zehar-estilora pasatzeko, tell aditza iraganean jartzen da, ondoren zeharkako osagarria, eta, jarraian, aginteran zegoen aditza to daraman infinitiboak ordezten
du. Egitura horrekin berarekin, ask erabil daiteke eskaerak adierazteko. Eskaintza bat zehar-estilora pasatzeko, offer aditza iraganean jartzen da, eta, jarraian, aditza infinitiboan to-rekin.Zerbait eskatzerakoan, normalean, please esaten da estilo zuzenean; zehar-estiloan, berriz, kendu egiten da, ask aditzean bertan inplizituki agertzen dela jotzen delako. “Be careful!” he said.
He told me to be careful. (Kontuz ibiltzeko esan zidan.)
“Please take the cans to the recycling bin,” she said. She asked me to take the cans to the recycling bin. (Potoak birziklatzeko edukiontzira eramateko eskatu zidan.)
“I’ll help you with your recycling project,” she said. She offered to help me with my recycling project. (Birziklatzeari buruzko proiektuaren inguruan laguntzera eskaini zen.)
Ezezko perpaus bat dugunean, not kokatuko dugu to partikularen aurrean. “Please don’t throw rubbish on the ground,” he said. He asked me not to throw rubbish on the ground.
(Zaborra lurrera ez botatzeko eskatu zidan.)
Reported suggestionsIradokizun bat zehar-estilora pasatzeko, subjektua jarriko dugu, eta suggest edo recommend aditzak lehenaldian; ondoren, pertsona horrek iradokitakoa adieraziko dugu. Advise aditza ere erabil daiteke aholkuak emateko, edo invite gonbitea luzatzeko. Iradokizunak bi eratara pasatzen dira zehar-estilora:• That partikularekin hasten den perpaus bat osagarri
zuzentzat erabiliz, bere subjektua eta aditza oinarrizko forman dituena.
“You should use energy-saving light bulbs,” he said. He suggested that I use energy-saving light bulbs.(Kontsumo baxuko bonbillak erabiltzeko iradoki zidan.)
• Gerundioa erabiliz, subjekturik zehaztu gabe. “Let’s buy green products,” she said.
She suggested buying green products. (Produktu ekologikoak erostea iradoki zuen.)
Reporting verbs• Esaldi bat zehar-estilora pasatzeko aditzik erabilienak say
eta tell dira; that juntagailua aurretik daraman menpeko esaldi bat sartzen dute aditz horiek (ingeles mintzatuan kendu egiten da hori). Tell aditzaren jarraian to gabeko zeharkako osagarri bat joaten da beti. It’s hard to imagine Paris without the
Eiffel Tower. This famous tower is the
city’s most famous symbol. But what
do you actually know about it?
First of all, it’s 300 metres tall and it
weighs 7,000 tonnes. It’s got 1,671
stairs and five lifts. It was built in
1889. Back then, it was the tallest
structure in the world. Its design was
also very unusual as it was designed
by an iron engineer, Gustave Eiffel.
The French Government asked
Eiffel to build something in honour
of an international exhibition. He
wanted to design a building with a
special open shape that showed its
iron structure. That is why the tower
hasn’t got any walls. Some people
thought the building was unsafe.
Others found it to be quite ugly. But
obviously, Eiffel’s design is original
and powerful. Over 250 million
tourists have visited the tower and
enjoyed its magnificent views of
Paris.
Clearly, the Eiffel Tower is no
ordinary skyscraper. It has been one
of the world’s favourite attractions
since it was built.
Text organisationTestu bat hiru paragrafotan zatitzen da. Paragrafo bakoitzak funtzio bat du:
• Lehen paragrafoak gaia aurkezten du.
• Testuaren gorputzak gaia garatu eta informazio gehiago ematen du.
• Azken paragrafoak gaia laburtu eta ondorioa azaltzen du.
closing sentence
body of paragraph
opening sentenceScience has always been my favourite
subject. This is because I’m curious
about everything I see around
me. I always try to work out how
everything works. I love taking apart
electrical appliances and putting them
back together. I’ve got an excellent
microscope at home and I often take
a close look at different things I find.
I’m also interested in astronomy and
I have gone on many star-gazing trips
with my family. Maybe one day my
parents will buy me a telescope.
To sum up, if you ask me which
subject I enjoy studying the most, the
answer will definitely be science.
