Staff Sgt. Dean Woody began playing at age 12 and soon became principal bassoon for the Chattanooga Youth Symphony and a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. Staff Sgt. Woody finished high school in Michigan having won a full scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he spent his senior year studying with bassoonist Richard Beene.

Upon completion of his Bachelor’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with David McGill and John Clouser, Staff Sgt. Woody played with the Cleveland Orchestra in the Blossom Summer Festival as well as the Sarasota Summer Festival and Colorado College Summer Festival.

In addition to his duties with The U.S. Army Concert Band, Staff Sgt. Woody is the principal bassoonist of the Alexandria and Fairfax symphonies, the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association and performs regularly with such ensembles as the National Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic, and National Gallery Orchestra. He has also appeared as soloist with repertoire ranging from Rossini to Weber. In 2002 he was the second prize winner of the Fox/Gillet international competition.

Staff Sgt. Woody lives in Fairfax, VA with his wife, Marlisa daughter, Annalisa and son, David.
