Welcome to the fi rst Bathgate Music Festival, the newest event to be added
to the town’s social calendar bringing together families that have lived in the
town for generations and new families, attracting fi rst time visitors and music
lovers from across West Lothian and far beyond, to rediscover Bathgate.
This Festival is an opportunity to celebrate all kinds of music from the best in
traditional Scottish folk, to brass bands and classical choral singing. I urge
everyone to take part in the Bathgate Music Festival and enjoy the celebration.
David Stein, Chair of Enterprising Bathgate and Bathgate Traders Forum
Enterprising Bathgate is all about improving the quality of life for the people in
the town, residents and visitors as well as business people. When Bathgate
recently earned Business Improvement District status we highlighted the
importance of providing different events to attract more people to get out and
about in the town. The Bathgate Music Festival is a great new event because
it builds on a tradition of making music, provides something for everybody
and has performances happening everywhere in the street, pubs and hotels
and, of course in the heart of town at the Regal Community Theatre. This is a
new opportunity for Bathgate to show its best face to the world.
Bathgate Traders Forum is delighted to be working with its partners to provide
this new event to bring the people of the town together. Because Bathgate
Music Festival delivers performances and workshops at different times during
the day and evening it offers something for everyone and gives visitors a
chance to explore the town and discover Bathgate with its independent
businesses and improving town centre. It has taken a huge effort to put
together the impressive concert, performance and workshop programme and
we hope that the response will be so strong that the Festival will become an
annual event. Enjoy the music.
welcome

Fine Arts Brasswith West Lothian Schools Brass Band and guest soloist Katrina Marzella, solo baritone
Fine Arts Brass is the longest-lived, most innovative, most widely travelled and most highly acclaimed British brass ensemble. They have taken their versatile sound, great humour and passion for the music they play to over 60 countries and performed in just about every music festival in the UK. For trumpet player Angela Whelan this performance is very special, a return home to Bathgate where her great career began. Angela played with West Lothian Schools Brass Band (WLSBB) and, for this special concert, Fine Arts Brass will be joined by WLSBB and guest soloist Katrina Marzella. Katrina is another “graduate” of WLSBB who has also played with West Calder Public Band and Broxburn Public before becoming the Solo Baritone player with Whitburn Band in 2003. WLSBB are the current European Youth Brass Band Champions and this year won the UK Youth Brass Band Championship for the third consecutive year. www.fi neartsbrass.co.uk.

Sarah KenchingtonBathgate Music Festival’s Artist in Bathgate Music Festival’s Artist in Residence is Sarah KenchingtonResidence is Sarah Kenchington
Sarah makes mechanical musical contraptions. Many instruments are made up of everyday bits and pieces that can be connected to wheels and pulleys to turn the musician into a one-person band. In all the instruments the mechanical processes that can be seen are meant to be as captivating as the sound that can be made.
This is music making for everyone. Sarah’s work is determined by the drive to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves musically, to make creative connections and imaginative leaps.
As Artist in Residence, Sarah will be based in Bathgate all week. Her work will be on show in the Regal Community Theatre and she will be leading workshops with local schools and community groups. Keep an ear to the ground for news on the street about performances on the amazing fl utterbox and musical bicycle – you might even be able to have a go!
