President’s report Introduction On the back of three extremely successful seasons from 2008 to 2010, which included a total of seven (7) Grand Final appearances for the club, four premierships and two Club Championships, the approach to 2011 was one of quiet confidence mixed with a significant level of uncertainty. Given the loss of significant numbers within the senior player group of the caliber of Paul Miller, Mat Waterford, Adam Dwyer, Mitch Lavelle and Jono Cody, it certainly put a hole in our on-field resources. Coupled with the fact we once again had to reconstruct our Colts team, the approach to 2011 realistically began as a rebuilding phase for the club. We were however, extremely fortunate that the younger players, who had experienced game time in higher grades the previous season, stepped up to fill voids across a number of levels within the player group. Season Highlights As with most seasons, there are a number of highlights that make a season memorable. Whether they are on-field acts of brilliance or off-field, alcohol affected decisions which earned the yellow training jersey, they have all contributed to ensure that season 2011 will be remembered as one of our best. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight and congratulate the entire club for the level of on-field success achieved this season. To be crowned Club Champions for the 3rd year in a row is a magnificent effort and one that should be savoured by all as it was a true club effort.

There were many highlights in 2011 which contributed to the success we enjoyed as a club, both on and off the field. They ranged from the staging of the fourth President’s Long Lunch, our continued contribution to the local Community through our Memorial Day fund raising and most importantly, the support of the playing roster in both on-field performances and off-field preparation and attitudes. Historically, we set our standards high at Bulldogs and the one goal that emerges each season is to ensure 4 grades progress into the semi-finals. During my time at Bulldogs, this basic goal has always been a very important part of our season preparation. Our achievements as a club in 2011 certainly enhanced the status of Bulldogs as the leading club in CWRU. We were the only club to be represented in all grades during the semi-final series and the only club to have more than one team in a Grand Final. Our achievements are listed below.

Apart from these successes, individual achievements should also be highlighted and applauded. Chris Plunkett and Tom Hollis were part of the Country Cockatoos representative program and were also privileged to be part of the City v Country fixture that returned to the representative calendar this season. In addition to this, Scott Johnston, Phil Tonkin, Hayden Tidswell and Tim Kafusi represented the Central West Blue Bulls. Semisi Langi, James Hurley, Nick Gell, Tom Jones, Will Wood, Will Aisake and Ryan McCarthy played significant roles in the victorious Central West U/20’s team coached by Mat McRobert, Mick Burgess and James McClaren. The U/20’s were managed by Brian Roberson with technical assistance provided by Mat Waterford. Rugby Following our premiership in 2010, it was not unexpected that changes would filter through the player group due to retirements and work commitments. It is unrealistic to expect, with the player loss we incurred, that we would not have some rebuilding to do over the following couple of seasons. We have been very fortunate that we have had many younger players step up to the top grade and fill that void throughout the season along with acquisitions such as James Stanbridge, Dean Meredith and Stephen Locke. The most frustrating aspect of 2011 was the competition was the most wide-open in recent seasons. There was not one team who stood out as in previous years and despite our player loss, we still had the team that was capable of winning the premiership. Fortunately, our 2nd Grade squad remained stable and this was added to by an influx of players, particularly in 3rd Grade, where our numbers flourished.

As Colts remained a U/19 competition, and also remained a compulsory grade, we once again had a high turnover of players and struggled for numbers in the early stages of the pre-season. The club worked very hard to support an intensive recruitment of Colts and this was rewarded by a squad of players of twenty five (25) during the season. We were extremely fortunate to recruit a large number of Colts who were talented rugby players. It would have been very interesting to see how good they could have been as a team if their commitment to training during the semi-final series had translated to the season proper. A large number of our Colts from 2011 have already showed they have the ability to become regular 1st Grade players in future seasons. All grades began the season with strong teams / squads. The enthusiasm of the player group in pre-season was not as high as in previous years. Training numbers were quite low at times and a little worrying. Without the attendance and support of the senior leadership squad, for whatever reason, the commitment of the younger players was difficult to harness and maintain. The consistent attendance of representative players at training during the pre-season is crucial to the foundation of the approaching season both on and off the field. It sets the standard that should be followed and promotes a fellowship throughout the grades. Leadership from the senior player group is intrinsic to our continued success and should be paramount in the minds those fortunate enough to represent.

1st Grade had an up and down season with both form and attitude. I believe that they still had the most talented backline in the competition but their ability on paper did not always translate to their on the field performances. Our inconsistent form was the result of various issues that ranged from multiple forced selection changes due to injury, illness and work commitments. Coupled with the consistent team changes was a less than perfect attitude. All these factors contributed to a disrupted preparation, diluted attendance at training and on-field performance. Despite the negatives, the squad still managed to finish 4th in the minor premiership and was unlucky not to progress further in the semi-final series. I hope that the current player group assess their season honestly and return in 2012 with a revitalised attitude and a hunger for success. Congratulations and thanks must go to the coach Murray Hooper for the commitment and passion he demonstrated throughout the year. Also to Murray Roberson for his management of the team. 2nd Grade completed a remarkable year by making their 4th consecutive grand final appearance. They did not demonstrate that they were the best team all year but they certainly were the best team when it counted. It was a fitting end to the season for this team to walk away as premiers for the 3rd time in four years. During the season and particularly during the semi-final series, I saw a team that grew in confidence and self-belief. They were not only a talented group of players, but more importantly, bonded to form a strong and loyal player group that were committed to each

other, their coaches and the goals they set. It was an absolute pleasure to deal with this team. The dressing room was a lot of fun and the attitude shown by the players was a reflection of the respect they had for their coaches and the leadership they showed throughout the season. They were particularly well led both on and off the field. Congratulations and my sincere thanks must go to the coaches and manager, James Horsburgh and Trent Fitzpatrick and Mick Hayes for the guidance and commitment they showed during a long and successful campaign. Your success was well deserved and an ideal way to erase the memory of 2010. There were a large number of players who contributed to the success of the team and many were not fortunate enough to take part on the field on Grand Final Day. Everyone who contributed to this achievement should share in the enjoyment that it provided. 3rd Grade can be a difficult grade as it contains players with varied commitment and abilities. A player’s commitment can vary for many reasons and this situation can sometimes be difficult to manage. Additionally, it is a harsh realisation when coaching 3rd Grade that every selection in higher grades affects the team you have each Saturday. As with most seasons, player numbers were very high in the early rounds but these numbers were maintained throughout the season. There were some problems with balancing game time for all players and moulding the team into a cohesive unit.

The entire player group deserve our congratulations for their attitude, on and off the paddock. Their commitment to training overall was outstanding and their attitude on game day was sensational. The result they achieved this year as GF runners-up was a reflection of not only their hard work but also the team spirit that was cultivated and nurtured over the course of the season by Wayne, Knocker and Tuma. The leadership shown by these three (3) blokes really ensured that 3rd Grade returned to the heart and soul of the club. Congratulations gents on your season. As in recent seasons, the U/19 limit on the Colts competition has meant that we effectively have to re-build our Colts team each season. It is a difficult job to not only recruit but to consolidate a team where the majority of the player group have not come through the junior ranks together as in other clubs. Congratulations to our Colts this season that proved again that they are the real deal. At times this year, dealing with colts was like trying to herd cats but there was a core group of players that really held it all together. I believe the turning point for the Colt’s season came after a defeat by CSU in the last round. There was an honest chat in the dressing room after the game and from that point on their attitude and commitment enabled them to grow another leg. Their performances from that point forward improved every week. This included gutsy wins against City, Minor Premiers Dubbo and CSU in the Grand Final. To come away with back-to-back premierships is a wonderful result. Thanks must go to coach Mick Lund and manager Chris de Young for their involvement this season. I would also

like to thank those 1st XV players that assisted with their preparation following their own elimination from the finals series. That sort of leadership is a reflection of our culture at Bulldogs and is something those involved can be proud of. Many Colts showed their Bulldog character when called upon to play in higher grades. Their enthusiasm with regard to backing up was very pleasing. They displayed all the qualities of skillful and committed players and did not look out of place in that company. As a group of young men, the club should be very proud of the manner in which they conducted themselves both on and off the field. The retention and recruitment of our colts and their preparation for Rugby at a higher level remains an important aspect of our upcoming 2012 season. Special Thanks It is always difficult to single out people for acknowledgement, but in the case of certain individuals it is certainly warranted. To Amy Warren, my sincere thanks. Your contribution this year once again has not only been refreshing but significant. You completed any duties with ease, and did an enormous amount of work relating to functions held at the club. I can’t thank you enough for your contribution in 2011. For the third year running, Michael Begley took on not only his normal committee duties but also the responsibility of President of our Junior club. Beggs was outstanding in his leadership of the Juniors as well as his work with the Bathurst Burrs. He was a tower of strength once again on game day and was someone that I relied on

Page 10: Bathurst Rugby Club Inc - SportzVaultbathurstbulldogs.sportzvault.com/.../Resources/BRC_A… ·  · 2015-12-141 Bathurst Rugby Club Inc. ... 16/06/2011, 21/07/2011, 11/08/2011 and

11

heavily throughout the season, not only with his work ethic but his counsel. He applied the same premise he did when he was playing …… work hard, never shirk your responsibility and put your hand up to help if it is required. The award of Best Clubman in 2011 was a fitting tribute to a man who is respected by everyone he deals with. As Vice President, Brian Roberson has the respect and admiration of not only everyone at Bulldogs but many within the Central West Zone. His contribution in 2011 as always has been productive, positive, committed and of the highest standard. He has an extended knowledge of the game and the laws. He has the passion that is required to achieve and lead. The honesty and integrity he brings to the club in his role within the executive, as a selector and as a person contributes greatly to the conduct of Bulldogs. He has been of enormous assistance to me personally again in 2011 and I thank him for his enormous contribution. People Maintaining our level of success both on and off the field cannot be achieved without the selfless contribution of many people. On behalf of the Bathurst Rugby Club, I would like to sincerely thank the management committee, coaches, selectors, managers, trainers, players, members, supporters and sponsors for your commitment you have shown. The spirit, which pervades the training paddock, the dressing room, the playing field, the sideline and the clubhouse are important facets, which contribute to the conduct of our club. You are all part of achievements in 2011. Throughout the season, many tasks are completed by people who do not seek reward, but wish to see the club approach each game in a committed

manner with a level of preparedness that will enable all players, officials and supporters to enjoy their Rugby at whatever level they are involved. Although these jobs appear insignificant, the completion of these tasks each week contributes enormously to the professional conduct of the club. A Rugby club is not just made up of players and management committee. It is a community of people with varying levels of commitment and support that can be relied on for assistance when required. To this end I would like to thank all those who when asked to help or for advice, gave of their time willingly. The community of support is always evident at Bulldogs and we are very fortunate to be able to call on such people. A club cannot exist and progress without a stable and professional Management Committee. To organise and direct a club in a professional manner can at times be difficult. Various aspects of management have a high level of sensitivity and must be dealt with in an open and transparent fashion. We are fortunate to be led by a professional and committed group of people who believe in the progression and stability of the club at all levels. A huge thank you must go to the Executive and Management Committee for your dedication and support in 2011. With regard to the preparation of our clubhouse and playing facilities, I would like to thank Peter Campbell once again for keeping the clubhouse and change rooms in a clean and orderly manner. With the size of the new club rooms and the number of dressing rooms we have, it is important that, as a club, we are aware of the amount of work required to

Page 11: Bathurst Rugby Club Inc - SportzVaultbathurstbulldogs.sportzvault.com/.../Resources/BRC_A… ·  · 2015-12-141 Bathurst Rugby Club Inc. ... 16/06/2011, 21/07/2011, 11/08/2011 and

12

maintain the premises at a high standard and realise we should all contribute to the maintenance and tidiness of our facility. Don’t leave it to just a few. To Peter Navin, Trevor Simm and the staff of the Parks and Garden Department of the Bathurst Regional Council, thank you for the playing surface, ground marking and general maintenance that was carried out during the season. The presentation of the ground was always professional and your staff is proactive in their attitude to any problems encountered during the year. Web Site Hopefully you are regular users of our web site that has developed during the last nine (9) seasons. It has continually evolved and improved over this time and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Greg Reid, who has taken over the responsibility from Brian Roberson in maintaining our web site, which has become a wonderful resource to the club. It will continue to assist in increasing our profile, both inside and outside the Bathurst community, further promote our sponsors and allow former members who are no longer local to keep in contact with club. Greg’s role has also naturally translated into publicity and communications. Communication plays an important part in the running of a cub. To this end, we continued with the use of bulk text messaging. This has proved quite successful in allowing players to be notified of events in an easy and cost efficient manner. Together with the club’s email list we succeeded in improving our communications within the club, using technology available to everyone.

New Facility Season 2011 saw the continued development of our new facility here at Ashwood Park. The reserves enclosures were completed during the season and the completion of the seating in front of the clubhouse has been scheduled during the off-season. There is still an enormous amount of work to be completed to improve on the existing facility. Most of the work to be completed is of a practical nature and will be intrinsic to the continued development of the club for the future. Although we appear to have a long way to go with regard to the completion of our facility, we must put things into perspective as I believe we are the envy of most, if not all clubs in the Central West zone with the facilities we provide our players, supporters and opposition teams. With a proactive approach and careful planning, I am confident we can continue to meet the needs of players and also invest in the additional infrastructure that will further develop the club for the future. CWRU Competition Structure The current structure of the Central West Zone proved once again to be very successful in 2010. The only aspect of the structure that Bulldogs has concerns with is the Colts competition. We believe that in the long term it is not sustainable due to the turnover of players and that the U/20 format would be better suited to our club and the zone. Following numerous forfeits and the withdrawal of Parkes from the Colts competition in 2011, the CWRU board is having a serious look at the structure of the Colts competition for 2012.

Tributes The contribution of Tuma Aisake on the field over the last twenty one seasons has without question been historic. But it is his commitment and leadership off the field, particularly over the last few seasons that have been largely overlooked. In that time, Tuma has gone about completing assigned tasks and those he has simply volunteered for in a quite unassuming fashion. It is easy to see the respect he is held within and outside the club community and the recognition he received on presentation night was a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much. Vale Mark Roberson During the 2011 season the club lost a former Patron and long standing supporter in Mark Roberson. The Roberson family has been involved with Bulldogs since the mid-sixties. Mark Henry Roberson was born on the 23-January-1922 and passed away on the 20-May-2011. Mark was a long-time resident of Bathurst, a devoted husband to Sheila and a proud father of 5 sons, all of whom have been involved to some extent with the Bathurst Bulldogs. From the mid 1960's, when eldest of five, Geoff was busy rebuilding the Bathurst Rugby Club, through to today, where Murray, Brian, Jack and Jude still have active memberships, Mark would work behind the scenes advising and supporting his beloved Bulldogs. Even in his final weeks on earth, he proudly wore his Bulldogs polo shirt to Tuesday's Bingo at the nursing home. Mark was elected as patron to our club during the time when Walmer Park was still settling on top of the old Bathurst tip. He remained a patron until his health began to fail in 2008.

Whilst his role with the club was generally behind the scenes, his business sense and building prowess help guide the development of the old Walmer Park clubhouse and amenities. As a staunch Bulldog supporter, Mark was never one to complain about anything and would always ask, "how did the boys go today?", referring to the bulldogs club as a whole. He will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Conclusion Finally I would like to thank my wife Jane, for her understanding and support throughout the year. I realise I thank her every year but it is too easy to overlook the contribution made by our families either directly or indirectly. Without their support and understanding it would be very difficult for any of us to give the commitment required to organise and conduct this club in a professional manner. I would like to extend this gratitude to all wives, girlfriends, partners and families of our players and officials who have made sacrifices during the 8-9 months that is the Rugby calendar. Without the help and understanding of all our ladies, the management of the club as a whole would suffer enormously. If we are to continue to improve and develop Bathurst Rugby Club both at a Rugby, community and social level, it is up to everyone involved to contribute in some way so that we remain a leader within Central West and Country Rugby. Please do not leave all the work to just a few. Put your hand up, not out! Regards John Maynard President BRC

Finance report The club is reporting a cash surplus of $18,976 and a net operating loss of $3,609 for the year ending 30th September 2011. This compares to a cash surplus of $15,479 and a net loss of $6,181 in the 2010 year. The club remains in a strong financial position with $78,395 in the bank and $12,767 owed in Debtors. The club had a reasonable year financially. The new facility continues to be attractive to spectators and players. We have seen strong gate takings and the bar trading continues to go from strength to strength. It must be said that the Bathurst Burrs have contributed strongly over the bar on a Friday night and is duly recognized. Sponsorship of the club has remained steady. Given that business conditions are slow to improve, this is a good result ($36,182 in 2011 verses $33,683 in 2010). That said the club and its members cannot underestimate the value of our sponsors as much of this money subsidies the cost of putting players on the paddock. It is already unfortunate that Toshiba will not continue to sponsor us next year. This sponsorship was worth some $4,500 to the club The cost of putting a player on the paddock is over $300. Also on top of this cost we also provide the players with shorts and socks. It reinforces how much the club is reliant upon its sponsors and general bar trade to maintain the current standards of conditions the players have at this club.

The goal of the club is obviously to provide the best facilities possible to the players but we need to players to understand that we need their support too. Costs throughout the year were kept at a minimum however we have noticed that some costs have increased such as insurance. The spike in medical and strapping was a once off. The club incurred further capital costs this year. The club spent $5,930 on the facility. These costs included the building of reserve benches. It should also be noted that the Bathurst Burrs donated a projector to the club at a cost of $4,090. With the changeover of the club we received a loan from the Bathurst City Council in the amount of $50,000 in 2007. We have since made seven principal reduction payments against this loan and we still envisage that this loan will be repaid over a ten year period so as to not comprise the operating cash-flow of the club. The loan currently sits at $37,000. Yours sincerely Mat Sharwood Treasurer BRC

Registrar’s report The 2011 season saw the Bathurst Rugby Club have a final membership total of 143 members, 125 of whom were registered as players. We did have up to130 registered players during the season however that number decreased following the transfer of 5 players to other locations for various reasons. 7 of those who registered as players failed to make it onto the field during the season leaving 118 registered players to compete in a total of 79 games, including the finals series. Including finals games, overall the club scored a total of 2080 points during the season while conceding 1114 points. Those figures show an overall average game score of 26 – 14 in favour of the Bulldogs which although not as impressive as 2010 (31 – 13) is still a fairly impressive average score over every grade game for the entire season. Once again our First Grade team utilised around one third of our playing roster with 42 different players taking the field at some stage during the season, co-incidentally the same number used as last year. Player durability was also evident in 2011 with Andrew Warren playing in every First Grade game and Club Captain Dane Fitzpatrick also playing every round, his fourth consecutive season without missing a match, which is quite an amazing effort. James Stanbridge, Wayne Fitzgerald, Henry Francis, Ryan Hogan, Dale Norris and Dean Sage all never missed a round nor did Colts players Mark Donnelly, Ben Seaman and Alex Tindall although in 3rd Grade and Colts the teams do not play every week due to byes occurring.

The following 2 tables follow on from last year’s report summarising age groups of our players and their Countries of Origin over the past 3 seasons rather than just 2. It is very significant to note that around 50% of our players were aged 22 or younger during 2011 which reinforces how young a club we really are becoming as far as player personnel. The number of players from Fiji and New Zealand backgrounds remained fairly static this year with our first player with a Namibian background making the list as well as 1 each from England and Tonga. Significantly, we did record 5 players of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origins for 2011. As can be expected, collection of player fees always poses a major problem and in this regard, I would like to thank the Managers, Coaches, Committee and also the Players who ably assisted in the collection of fees during the 2011 season to make that job so successful. Some innovations were initiated this year which greatly expedited the collection of fees and ensured our club had sufficient cash flow to meet its financial obligations, particularly early in the season when our club needs to outlay large amounts to register/insure all our teams and purchase jumpers, shorts, socks etc. There is however always room for improvement and the realisation that in most sports, you cannot even take the field/track/court etc. unless fees are fully paid up front. Putting a team onto the field is a very costly exercise and our club is extremely fortunate that our fees are relatively low compared to most other clubs, mainly due to some of the costs being offset by our club’s very good sponsorship arrangements. I encourage all players to think about putting some money aside each week from now to ensure that they have their fees available for the start of next season which would greatly assist in the cash flow of our club for 2012 and minimise the week to week workload of the club registrar. Unfortunately I will not be undertaking the job of club registrar or in fact any official position next season due to other

personal sporting commitments in writing a book and travelling overseas however I will endeavour to get to as many games as possible to support the Bulldogs as they strive for continued success in 2012. Thank you to all who have supported me in my work with the club over the past two seasons as registrar and been such a great group of people to know and be involved with. Congratulations to everyone in the club who helped make 2011 such a successful year for the Bulldogs. Graham Scott Registrar

Sponsorship report

The Bathurst Rugby Club is fortunate to be supported by sponsors, both business houses and individuals. It is impossible for an amateur sporting club to survive and develop without such contributions. The Bathurst Rugby Club greatly appreciates the generous assistance and support from all sponsors and donors. Without the financial assistance of our sponsors, we would be unable to provide the level of subsidy we do to registration fees, bar and canteen prices and our club apparel. Their contribution also assists us to provide the level of player support in strapping and training equipment. Major sponsors that have given wonderful support to the club throughout the year included The Panarama Hotel, McIntosh, McPhillamy & Co, Toshiba, Town & Country Water Shop, King, Cain Solicitors, Bathurst Tile Mart and Cityfit. It should also be noted that many of our sponsors have been extremely long term supporters and that is something we are very proud of. Mac & Mac 26 Years WJ Coote An association

Club Captain’s report Bathurst Bulldogs once again had a very successful 2011 season. We are now very much settled in at Anne Ashwood Park, and great to see more infrastructure being put in place. Each home game we had impressive crowds, whilst the canteen and bar again proved to be a success. We had all grades qualify for the Semi Finals, and to top it all off we again won the Club Championship, replicating the success from 2009 and 2010. A wonderful achievement for the club. 2011 was a tremendous year for our colts. Defending their premiership once again over cross town rivals CSU was very well deserved to all players and coaching staff. It was also pleasing to see a number of Colts step up into grade rugby throughout the year, and a number of those clearly displayed the potential to become established first graders with the Bulldogs in the years to come. Congratulations must go to the coaching staff namely Mick Lund, Paul Miller, Shaun Healy and Chris de Young on preparing these guys on a weekly basis. Third Grade went through season 2011 with many keen and committed players. Coaches Dale Norris and Wayne Fitzgerald did a magnificent job week in week out and it was great to see third grade make the grand final for the first time since 2002. Unfortunately the result on grand final day didn’t go Bulldogs’ way, but that experience will be built on for next year. Further congratulations to Wayne and Dale on achieving the Tim Dunn memorial award. Second Grade again had a successful season, making it to the Grand Final for the fourth successive year, and going one better than last year by claiming the

Premiership over Orange City. It was pleasing to see a number of these players regularly filling a number of first grade positions through injury. That experience should prove valuable for the club in the years to come. A special mention must also go to coaches James Horsburgh and Trent Fitzpatrick and for the excellent job done throughout the year. A further thank you must go to Manager Mike Hayes. His organizational skills throughout this year were excellent. First Grade this year finished the minor season in 4th position before being defeated by Orange City in the Elimination semi-final. Murray Hooper again did a great job leading and coaching the team for the second year and is to be congratulated. With the departure of some key players at the end of 2010, this enabled many younger players to step up. The coaching staff this year again did an excellent job, with teams showing improvement on a weekly basis. Murray Hooper needs to be commended on his leadership and guidance throughout the year and the professionalism that he displayed. These attributes flowed down through the grades, with all coaches finding success in some way throughout 2011, and the major success being the 2011 Club Champions. A main ingredient in the Club achieving the Club Championship and two premierships was the efforts by the coaching staff. Shane Cantrill and Shawn Hooper did a fantastic job as head fitness and skills coaches. The variety from week to week was very beneficial and doing these drills in teams allowed for consistency on game day.

Congratulations must go to the committee of John Maynard, Brian Roberson, Mick Begley, Murray Roberson, Amy Warren, Graham Scott, Dale Norris, Henry Francis, Pat Whittaker, Paul Carver, Matt Sharwood, Greg Reid, Richard Smith and Ash Goninan. The work this group of people has put in throughout the year has been magnificent, and is done only to benefit the club. It was a pleasure to work with such a committed group of people. Well done also to Mick Begley on achieving the Clubman of the Year award yet again. Dane Fitzpatrick Club Captain 2011

1st XV report Let me start by congratulating Colts and Seconds on their excellent success this season and to Teddy, Trent, Lundy, Crusty and all those who helped these teams achieve the ultimate victory in 2011. To Wayne, Nocker, all of third grade and all involved in thirds this year also congratulations on getting to the grand final well done for a great effort. To all involved well done on winning the club championship for a third year in a row showing everyone why they should rate Bulldogs the Premier Club in Central West Rugby. While 2011 didn’t have the success, in first grade, that we were hoping for at the beginning it did have its share of success as well as some very good performances both individually as well as a team. Pre-season while not having great numbers was based around getting the fitness levels up and increasing long term endurance based around longer running periods and basic technical deficiencies. With strong numbers in both the Central West seniors and under 20’s it was up to the other players to put in at these early training sessions and start setting a strong culture for the upcoming year. With good performances at country week we again achieved well having both Chris Plunkett and Tom Hollis picked to play for Country and Will Aisake, Nick Gell, Semisi Langi & James Hurley picked in the Country under 20’s, well done to all these players.

A good first up win over Emus was encouraging but subsequent losses to Parkes and Forbes and the draw with Roo’s was not the start we needed and in hindsight the way the year ended up, not having the consistency to string back to back wins together for long periods. These early losses and the unavailability of some of our more senior players in these early games saw us play a large number of younger players in first grade before they were probably ready for it. Players such as Harry Phillips and Tom Jones both showed good form in these games as did Jarrod Morrison, Jake Gallway and Karl Toole but the combinations didn’t get the results we needed. Mid-season victories saw us jump up into contention of a top three finish to the regular season with strong wins over Cowra, CSU, Forbes and Rhinos at home, but away losses cost us dearly. Solid wins over Dubbo Roo’s away and the eventual grand finalists Narromine and Parkes proved that with the right commitment and combination we had a team that was more than competitive, but again we suffered from inconsistent form and too many injuries to key personnel to finish the job off. Again we relied heavily on the depth of the club to fill positions and again these players stepped up, I commend Jack Roberson, Peter Fitzsimmons, Mark Donnelly, Ben Seaman and Ben McNiven from colts who all exceeded expectations when asked to step up and all have shown their potential to play a lot more first grade in years to come.

Page 24: Bathurst Rugby Club Inc - SportzVaultbathurstbulldogs.sportzvault.com/.../Resources/BRC_A… ·  · 2015-12-141 Bathurst Rugby Club Inc. ... 16/06/2011, 21/07/2011, 11/08/2011 and

25

Ultimately, the late season losses to Narromine and City proved costly and left us in the do or die situation of finishing in forth position, and led to the loss at home to City in the elimination game. Congratulations must go to those players who performed well all season being Phil Tonkin, Alex Weal, Lachlan Bull, Isaac Breen and Andrew Warren who was the only player to play every game of the season for first grade. I thank Scotty Johnson and Andrew Warren for their leadership as captains throughout the season and all those who assisted in the coaching of the team being Andy McRobert, Richard Smith, Jock McClaren, Shane Cantrill, Matt Waterford, and Shawn Hooper for looking after the clubs fitness this year. To Murray Roberson and those who stood in for him as manager this year, John and the strappers, Rabs and the selectors, thank you for your assistance in getting the team onto the paddock each week. To John, Rabs and the committee thanks for all your assistance this season and helping make Bulldogs the premier rugby club in central west yet again and what I believe to be one of the best clubs within NSW country. Our first grade lunch must also be mentioned for the great day that it was and thanks must go to Mark Gerrard for attending and giving us an insight into life at the top of professional rugby, it was a great day for those who attended and thanks to Amy and the organisers for their efforts.

Finally to the wives, girlfriends, families, partners, supporters and all that are involved with our great club thank you for your support and assistance throughout 2011 I look forward to 2012 with great expectations, aiming for the improvement required so as to host the first home Grand Final at Ann Ashwood Park. 2nd XV report 2011 saw a year where a number of players who had experienced the bitterness of losing grand final in 2010 were finally able to enjoy the spoils of victory in 2011. It was a year where a number of players grew from “blokes” who had skill, to finally become “thinking footballers”. This development, in both knowledge of the game and overall ability, saw a very fruitful year and one which was enjoyed by all. “Our front 3” The season started with Andrew “The Donz” Donaldson, Richard “Rocket” Taylor and Junior Langi. This provided a formidable front row. With Junior being unavailable due to work commitments for a majority of the 2nd round, followed by a knee injury, this paved the way for Eugene “Huge”, Nieuwoudt, whom when provided with the opportunity to play up-a-grade, grabbed it with both hands and firmly cemented his spot in the team for the rest of the season.

These three (3) provided a sound base which gave the 2nd’s a strong platform in the scrum which made way for the rest of the team to capitalise on their dominance. “The old bulls” Dane Fitzpatrick and Shannon Felsch made up the 2nd row for 2nd Grade the majority of the year. Occasionally when Shannon was feeling much younger than his age he would drop back to Number 8, however when these two (2) were in the 2nd row it was simply a given that our scrum would be dominant.

As captain, Dane having a teaching background was extremely useful because as is widely known throughout Central West, referees on occasions need educating as to the laws of the game.

27

While Dane would be educating the referee at the breakdown of play, Shannon would often be mentoring the younger members of the team and was able to provide them with the "old head perspective", meanwhile strategising as to how they were going to breakdown their opponents. I say unequivocally that these two (2) gentlemen were pivotal in the success of 2nd Grade in 2011. Their leadership, both on and off the field was exemplary. The “old bulls” as they were labelled were able to pass off their years of experience to the younger members of the playing group which was greatly beneficial for all, and in my opinion encapsulates just what is the “Bulldogs spirit ”. “The Loosey’s” This group was predominantly made up of the ever reliable Chris “Frankie De-Young, Gus Cleaver, and Joshua booth. None being extremely big men, and certainly not in the mould of a typical modern day loose forward, these three (3) certainly made up for what they lacked in size, in courage and sheer ability.

All three (3) were able to exploit the bigger slower forwards which they would experience from time to time in other clubs. Their tenacity at the breakdown, and their willingness to put their body on the line in defence made sure that we as a team were able to retain our own ball, while being able to pilfer large amount of the opposition ball, providing a great platform for our backs to do their thing. Other forwards which gave significant contributions to 2nd Grade throughout the year were James “Trunkey” Gilbert and James Hurley. Both of which were valuable assets to our team and both played a significant role in our success as a whole. With Trunkey’s powerful running and Hurley’s dominance in the lineout provided 2nd Grade with an extra dimension to their game at times which we tend to rely on. “The playmakers” With Dean “Deano” Meredith at half back, Dylan “Sinkers” Sinclair at 5/8 and Timo Kaufausi at inside centre and Jarrod Morrison at outside centre, it was simple. If these guys were firing, we would win. Thank goodness for 2nd grade, they fired more times than not.

28

As a new member to the club this year, and having come across from our arch enemy CSU, Dean slotted straight into the halfback role. Given his quiet nature and willingness to do what asked, it was not until halfway through July that we actually discovered that Dean in fact had never played halfback and was a number 6 by trade. Even to the trained eye, Dean filled this role brilliantly and provided a 3rd breakaway on the field. His ability to understand forwards (as not many backs can) was hugely beneficial in providing a link between the front 8 on the back 6. Sinkers has to be up there with the most improved in 2nd Grade in 2011. He is one of the players whom I alluded to in the above paragraphs that have come a long way both in maturity as a footballer, but also in his decision making ability. His kicking game often provided the well needed rest for our tight forwards and got us out of some stricky situations when opposition teams would be pounding our line.

Timo struck the fear of god into many of our opponents, and I am fairly sure that a number of opposing inside centres would have had nightmares about him on the Friday night prior to playing the “mighty dogs”. Having a strong straight running centre allowed us to play the game plan which we did and provided a base from which were able to launch many attacking raids with our outside backs. As a true veteran of the game, his knowledge and wealth of experience paid dividends in the tight matches. As a deservedly best and fairest, Jarrod “Jay-Rod” Morrison was brilliant at outside centre. His ability to shut down back lines such as CSU and Narromine allowed us to play the game plan that we wanted to play and always had the opposition second-guessing themselves. In attack his running lines were a marked improvement on that of his own last year, while his development and knowledge base as a footballer continues to grow. Other notables who assisted 2nd grade greatly as playmakers were Nick Williams as a burly inside centre and Andrew “Drew” Gray as the ever reliable halfback. Unfortunately due to work commitments both players were unavailable for selection at times but both played a pivotal role in the success of 2nd Grade throughout 2011. “The back 3” These men provided 2nd grade with a very useful counter-attack that we did not possess last year. With Ryan “Ronny” McCarthy and Tim “TC” Collins on the wing, speed was not an issue for the Bulldog 2nd grade, with our “kick chases” being certainly one of the strongest aspects of our game. Ryan was able to provide some flair with some very handy footwork which left opposition teams in 2’s and 3’s, especially with his in-and-away.

Converting pressure to points during the GF

29

While Tim chased everything, including opposition players who made a break, in one instance running down an opposing CSU member, only not be rewarded for his efforts and to be sent for ten because of a very dubious referee's decision. Both need to be commended on their dedication both to training and to 2nd Grade as a whole, with nothing ever being too much trouble for either of them and always willing to go that extra yard to assist the team where they could. The ever reliable Trent “TJ” Fitzpatrick spent the first half of the year as co-coach describing to the younger players how things should be done. After recovering from a severe ankle injury which he suffered during the major semi-final last year, the 2nd half of the season saw TJ once again “don” the number 15 and provide the necessary guidance and direction from the back. Having the old head at number 15 provided somewhat of a calming influence to the rest of the younger members of the team that were in front of him. Knowing when to slow the game down, or knowing when we had to strike that fatal blow was essential to our game this year. Other members of the Bulldogs club who provided their services to our back 3 were Tyler Cook and Jake Gallway. Both of which provided formidable replacements and always provided pressure on those who were selected in 2nd grade in front of them to perform at their peak in order to maintain their spots. “The manager” Another vital member of our team was our manager Mike Hayes. Ensuring that everyone was signed up, dressed and ready on game day I can only imagine must have been at times like “herding.

cats”, but with a level of composure, only likened to that of a Japanese kamikaze pilot, Mike did it with a smile on his face and commanded respect from the players that only Colonel Gaddafi could dream of.

Finally to the players, thank you for making my job so enjoyable. Without the dedication shown by the players, being out in the elements when it is -2° in Bathurst and sleeting in the middle of June would certainly not seen as enjoyable. I wish them all the very best in their future playing careers, however long that may be, and if privileged enough to be able to get to work with them again in coming seasons I sincerely look forward to it. Thanks for a great year. 2nd Grade Coach James “Ted” Horsburgh

3rd XV report This year we have been very successful in the grade despite coming away without the trophy in the Grand Final, which was the first grand final third grade has made in 10 years. The commitment from the majority of the squad was outstanding. We had a core of players who turned up both Tuesday and Thursday for the majority of the season without fail. This effort is to be applauded and was it was recognised throughout the club.

The way our team joined in to activities such as paintball was encouraging and seemed to bond us all together, with everyone recognizing the fact that friendships forged both on the training field and game day were ones that would last for a long time.

A special thanks go to the Murray Hooper, Mat Waterford, Shane Cantrill, Jordan and Lachlan Bull, Dean Oxley and Shaun Hooper for their assistance throughout the year. A special mention goes to John Maynard for his strapping and sorting of all our pre game needs as well as other duties that seem to get done. Brian Roberson for his assistants throughout the finals, Chris Plunkett for all his help throughout the year, the team and coaches got a lot out of everything you helped with and a big thank you to Tuma Aisake for being our manager. Colts report A successful year both on and off the field, the on field success is easily measured in the fact that the colts were able to defend their premiership. During the course of the year nine colts made their first grade debut with many of these been run on appearances. The colts to play first grade were. Mark Donnelly, Semisi Langi, Jack Roberson, Harry Phillips, Ben McNiven, Peter Fiztsimons, Aaron Booby, Ben Seaman, and Jordan Ward. I have no doubt that the above named players and others from within the colt’s side this year will provide the basis for the first grade side in years to come. Off the field this year the colts undertook a wide range of tasks from gate keeping and bar work, through to assisting with the strapping of other grades. I am as proud in their efforts off the field as I am with the on field success.

The regular season saw colts finish in third position on the ladder behind the minor premiers Dubbo Kangaroos and Charles Sturt University. A loss in the first round of the semi-finals at the hands of CSU saw the colts relegated to playing sudden death football. I personally believe that the second half of the game against CSU is where the boys developed the trust and belief in one another that led to premiership victory. The qualifying final against Dubbo was an aggressive game with the colts shutting down the Dubbo loose forwards who had previously been stand outs. The grand final was the game of the year with the boys showing a defensive resolve beyond their years. They held out the students on our line for over 10 minutes, securing a gutsy 15-7 victory. This success would have not been possible without the support and advice of many people who I will attempt to mention, unlike presentation night. SORRY PAUL. Paul Miller is first cab off the rank, Paul guidance and advice in the development of the backline throughout the year was pivotal to our success. Chris De Young our manager was excellent in the way he assisted with the boys, His contribution to preparing the boys pre game, on many occasions without thanks was invaluable and I am most grateful. Jude Roberson acted as water girl throughout the year, delivering messages and instruction as only a mother could. Sean Healy returned after the early exit of first grade and acted as my interpreter, he is truly gifted in his understanding of the game and how he communicates with the colts, his coaching ability is hard to

ignore and I would encourage him strongly to continue coaching in some capacity within the club. Many of the first XV players spent our semi-final campaign assisting, in particular Phil Tonkin and Scott Johnston who assisted in every training session. Others to lend a hand were, Andrew Warren, Alex Weal, Alex Grant, Stephen Locke and Mitch Lavelle. I would also like to take the time to thank Matt Waterford, Shane Cantrill, Mick Burgess and Richard Smith who throughout the year attended trainings to assist in solving specific Issues.

This on field support was matched in full by the off field support by the club and its members, I cannot thank John Maynard enough for ensuring the boys had everything they needed to take the field, his patience with myself and the players throughout the year was astounding.

Brian Roberson and Peter Stephens as selectors showed faith throughout the year allowing me the freedom to build and develop the side as I saw fit within reason. In particular I believe that Brian’s guidance this year has allowed me to develop into a better coach. I would like to thank the Bathurst Rugby Club for the opportunity to coach the Colts XV this year, I have been proud to represent the club and look forward to continuing in some role next year. Kindest regards Michael Lund Colts Coach

Memorial Day report Bulldogs take seriously their contribution within the wider community in which we are all a part of. Our efforts this year once again raised in excess of $10,000 on our club memorial day. We hope these funds contribute significantly to the purchase of equipment that is required by the school staff for the continued development of the children. I realise this is a substantial sum to give away, but if we become aware of the difficulties faced by the school community and the positive manner which they approach the education of the children, it confirmed that our efforts are certainly justified. Since the inception of our memorial day in 2001 we have donated in excess of $86K to the Bathurst community with the BBH and Carenne School the beneficiaries. We can’t raise this level of funding without the cooperation and support of the players and supporters digging deep into their pockets during the auction. Scott Johnston once again squeezed $12,500 out of the audience with his silky skills behind the microphone. It was even more pleasing that he was stitched up on the evening and had to pay an excessive sum for his jumper. Given the number of times he has dished out this same medicine to others, you would call this scenario karma. Most importantly, Memorial Day allowed the club to remember and honour club members that are no longer with us. Part of our preparations for the future, is developing an understanding of the actions and contributions that people have made, both on and off the field,

over many years and acknowledging those efforts in the light of our success today. Although these people are missing from our ranks, they are no less important to the fabric of Bulldogs. Many of these people contributed significantly to the development of our great club, the spirit with which it approaches its Rugby and our profile that exists within the Bathurst community. They deserve our gratitude, and our respect for their contribution

Juniors U/13’s report With the appointment of Geoff Siegert, Andrew Dowd and Bobby Newman as coaches of the under 13’s in 2011 we were off to a very good start. The boys have coached all through the sub juniors and made the transition very seamless for their young team. Rugby in Bathurst has benefitted immensely from the efforts of these gentlemen, many young boys have learnt the skills of rugby under their guidance and have enjoyed every minute of it. 2011 was a great year for the Bulldog juniors, we will always encounter the problem of the majority of the side only just turning 12 in an under 13 competition. But I believe this is a challenge the Bathurst boys are starting to look forward too, the growth in the boys over the course of the year is remarkable. Again Bathurst Burrs under 11’s from 2010 provided the nucleus of the side with 6 boys from Bathurst high and a number of Stannies boys returning from last year to play when their schedule permitted. Bulldogs finished mid table with many fine wins under their belt, and the last half of the season was especially pleasing with the boys really coming together to play some fine rugby. This culminated in the boys winning the Diary Farmers Plate a competition run for teams finishing outside the top four. The boys travelled by bus to Parkes and played some very entertaining football to take the title. This is the first bit of silverware the Bulldogs junior club has won and the coaches and players should be very proud of their efforts. Especially since we are still waiting to receive the trophy from CWJRU ???

We are hoping to start an under 15’s at the club next year as there are a number of boys moving up to this age group from the 13’s. This can be difficult as we are trying to attract boys from other sports to make a commitment to rugby so we would appreciate it if you could promote our club and the 13’s and 15’s to anyone who may be interested. A big thank you to Phillip Newton and especially Jacqui Woods for all her hard work this year, we are a small club with a few people doing a lot of work and it is much appreciated. There a couple of things that we would like to happen every year, that the boys have fun and learn the skills of rugby and that they wear the Bulldog jersey with pride and respect and the team of 2011 certainly done that. Thank you Michael Begley President BRCJRU

P R E S I D E N T S R E P O R T

It is with pleasure that I submit the Annual Report for Bathurst Burrs Junior Rugby Club for the 2011 Season.

Our season started with registration night on the 4th of March 2011 with the penultimate event of the season being on 17th of September 2011 with a very successful fundraising night.

This season saw approximately 96 (82 in 2010) registered players. The club consistently nominating 2 teams in each of Under 7 and Under 9 age groups with 3 teams of Under 11s at Central West Sub Junior Gala Days. Obviously the playing season for the Bathurst Burrs represents a large amount of travel for young Rugby players. I must applaud the commitment from the parents of Burrs and thank them for supporting their children in being able to enjoy and experience junior rugby.

The teams were successfully guided during the season by:

Under 7s Luke Fitzgerald and Justin Adams Under 9s Phillip Newton and Shane Cantrill Under 11s Lloyd Hooper and Stewart Murphy

On the regular Central West Sub Junior playing field the Burrs attended Gala Days at Canowindra, Parkes, Molong, Orange Emus, Cowra, Mudgee and Orange City.

Consequently, our own Gala Day was patronised with a total of 29 teams participating with 8 in Under 7s, 11 in Under 9s and 10 in Under 11s. This was just less than the number of teams in 2010 with Blue Mountains Grammar falling victim to winter ailments in the days beforehand. However, an excellent day for rugby weather wise helped make the day another outstanding success at Anne Ashwood Park. This was vindicated by personal calls I received from other club representatives to impart their congratulations to Bathurst Burrs and in one case referred to as hosting the best Gala Day in the zone. The following is indiative of the feedback received:

Without a doubt the headline intiative in 2011 was incorporating internal club games on Friday Nights into our season to help alleviate gaps and travel demands in the Central West Sub Junior gala day program. Despite some harsh Bathurst Weather in the early weeks of these games there were in my mind some salient points to take away. What these games serve to do is not only provide extra games for our players but also gives another choice or option to those Parents and Players that may not otherwise see junior rugby as their mainstream choice of winter sport. I see this avenue as the primary one in which we will be able to expand club participation numbers. After what could be described as a work in progress start up, the club needs to persist with this concept and build on it in 2012.

A number of Burrs players attended the Hearts in Union clinic at Mayfield in the pre season to augment their preparation for season 2011. This was beneficial not only from a playing aspect

On behalf of all of the parents and boys from All Saints’ College who participated in the Bathurst Burrs Gala Day yesterday, I would like to thank you and your team of organisers and referees for putting on a fantastic event. Our boys thoroughly enjoyed the day and all matches were played in great spirit. Thank you for your time and effort.

46

but the Burrs players were able to participate in a coaching clinic delivered by the pre eminent Wallabies Coach Robbie Deans.

In the course of our season we also enjoyed as with previous seasons, additional socials games with All Saints Junior School in the Under 7s and Under 9s.

The annual Presentation Night at Anne Ashwood Park was on 19.8.2011. Matthew Peterson was the deserved recipient of The Presidents Shield in 2011 (awarded annually to a final year Under 11 player who best demonstrates the values and traits that the club is looking to instill into our young players).

The 2011 season has been extremely successful off the field as well as on it.

A strong Committee and band of willing though limited volunteers have managed to ensure the smooth flowing of the operations of the club. In this regard acknowledgement needs to be made in particular to:

Phillip Newton – Vice President Tim Hulme – Secretary Martin Fox – Registrar

In addition, Scott Taylor must be acknowledged for his ex officio assistance to the Committee in terms of the general functioning of the catering during the season.

The Annual Fundraiser Night was this year held at the clubhouse on 17.9.2011 at Anne Ashwood Park coinciding with the World Cup pool match against Ireland. With a stronger attendance than last year it was a very successful evening (despite the result on the scoreboard!) with strong support with some of the auction items. The club thanks all of those Parents, supporters and friends of Burrs that were able to particpate and attend the event.

In the midst of these activities a key improvement has been made in the ability to publish Club information on the website and also distribute the same out to the club at large via e-mail. This is due to the improvement in the registration process in capturing e-mail details to allow this to happen.

Of course like any other sporting club the Bathurst Burrs would not be viable without a multitude of support from sponsors in varying capacity. To this end I thank them very gratefully on behalf of the whole club. I have detailed the sponsors separately further in the Annual Report.

The other mainstay outside of the Burrs official sponsors and supporters has been of course the Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Club in terms of allowing the Burrs to utilise the facility at Anne Ashwood Park. To John Maynard and the Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Club Committee our sincere thanks for providing a first class facility that attracts the accolades of all visitors. The Burrs would most definently not be gaining year on year traction without having the usage of Anne Ashwood Park.

As everyone is aware the Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Club have one junior team in the Under 13s age group and key people have worked tirelessly to establish or put in place a progression of teams through all age groups at various points in time to Under 17s which would allow players to progress to the regular Under 19s (Colts). Our Bathurst Burrs sub juniors occupy the Under 7s to Under 11s age groups. In terms of relationships with stakeholders such as players (progressing through age groups), sponsors, the Central West Zone and the clubs that make up the zone there is if you like for all intents and purposes no distinction between the Burrs and the Bulldogs. From a marketing viewpoint (to prospective players, parents and sponsors) and establishing a clear pathway from Under 7s to senior rugby it is my opinion that junior rugby as we know it in Bathurst needs to be amalgamated or brought together under the umbrage of one entity. This is a missing link if you like that needs to be drawn together in one form or other inorder to advance junior rugby in Bathurst.

Page 45: Bathurst Rugby Club Inc - SportzVaultbathurstbulldogs.sportzvault.com/.../Resources/BRC_A… ·  · 2015-12-141 Bathurst Rugby Club Inc. ... 16/06/2011, 21/07/2011, 11/08/2011 and

47

In a tangible sense the key goal for the club to work towards is to rigidly focus on setting aside and working towards directing all current financial reserves towards the construction and or improvements to the playing facility at Anne Ashwood Park that will see at least one junior sized playing fields being put in place on the available land.

Finally I would like to acknowledge my wife Michelle who has given me a great deal of support, lattitude and understanding in the 2011 season (and prior seasons) to enable me to give of my time to this role which is personally very rewarding in a club which has a tremendous spirit and is made up of a terrific group of both Parents, Players and Supporters.

The 2011 season has seen the following headline items in use of funds:

Sponsorship of $7,350 for the season. Registration collections of $5,000 for the season. Purchase of Friday Night playing jerseys for $4,092.00. Purchase new first aid kits for all age groups for $1,103.78. Acquisition of Portable Marquees for $9,057.50 for use at Gala Days. Provision of a Grant of $4,090 to the Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Club to go towards the

installation of overhead projector and AV equipment in the Clubhouse. Contribution of $6,849.95 in bar takings through the season to the Bathurst Bulldogs. Provision a number of catered evenings for players and visitors from All Saints. A Net Surplus for 2011 of $7,353.25

This is thanks to a second consecutive year of record registrations (96 players), generous sponsorship which increased markedly in 2011, a successful Gala Day and the generous support of parents and friends who attended our annual Fundraising event.

We end the season with $23,054.52 in the bank and are in a good position to plan towards long term additions to the playing facility which would benefit junior rugby for years to come.

Our annual fundraiser raised a profit of almost $7,315.98, thanks to a stronger patronage this year from Parents and Friends of the club and the generous donating of auction items which were in one case in particular fiercely bid upon on the night.

The Burrs are going from strength to strength. Player registrations finished 2011 at 96 - 23, 29 and 44 players lining up for the U7's, U9's and U11's, respectively. The vast majority of this

Page 51: Bathurst Rugby Club Inc - SportzVaultbathurstbulldogs.sportzvault.com/.../Resources/BRC_A… ·  · 2015-12-141 Bathurst Rugby Club Inc. ... 16/06/2011, 21/07/2011, 11/08/2011 and

year's U13's will not be returning to the Bulldogs in 2012 so the twenty-two boys moving up from the U11's will form the core of the U13's (U12's in reality) in 2012. Good luck in the big leagues, boys. This year we were required by the NSW Country Rugby Union to collect photo identification to accompany all player registrations. Registrations dribbled in throughout the season, with the successful trial of the intra-club competition attracting interest from children who had not previously experienced our game. We saw a good number of these intra-club competitors backing up for the Gala Days. This year coaches and assistant coaches came from everywhere, with dads stepping in to cover absences through the season. A special mention to Justin Adams for coming to Luke's rescue with the huge U7's squad. Only 8 of this years U7's will be moving up so without any new blood we already have 2 teams. Recruiting for some more help for U7's will be necessary in 2012. With all member families providing email addresses this season we have been able to efficiently and confidently communicate all Burrs business electronically through the MyRugby website. This coupled with the new Burrs website created by Justin has eliminated the need for paper.

A solid year for the "foundation" team of the Bathurst Burrs. The players thoroughly enjoyed their Rugby experience at training and especially on game days!

As a coach, the players development during the season was very exciting especially since nearly ¾ of the more then 20 players had never played before.

This was indicated by:

- One out runs (sometimes backwards) at the start of the season, turning into passing and forward running to create pressure on the opposition players.

- Crowding around the ball turning into a back-line in attack and defence.

- An understanding of the rules of the game, particularly staying on side in defence, becoming ingrained in their play.

- Understanding the importance of being a "good sport" win, lose or draw.

- Chasing the ball until the ref blows the whistle! Don't stop trying!

- The "senior" players in the team making sure that the ball was shared around so that everyone was able to contribute fully to the team.

- The only side in the under 7’s to instigate both scrums and lineouts during actual games

The five or so U7's players going up the U9's next year can't wait to start tackling!

Thanks to all the parents who helped throughout the season to make Rugby a positive experience for their children and the team. Special thanks to Justin Adams for his help as co- coach and the entire committee for making the year such an enjoyable time.

It was with great pleasure I was able to help coach the bathurst Burrs Under 9s Rugby Team in the 2011 season.

I thought the players showed great improvement in all areas of the game.

Training on Friday nights certainly took a lot of patience and planning, but overall I feel the discipline of team members improved throughout the season.

I am sure each child developed their ability to pass, catch, run into space and tackle. But most importantly they all had a great deal of fun.

Game day on Sunday was fantastic, there was always great family participation and I think we were blessed this year with pretty good weather. I know on a Sunday afternoon the lounge at my place certainly got used, as keeping up with Twelve players was a full time job. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Scott Crozier and Scott Gardnier for their tremendous support. Our fantastic manager Tim with his organisational and communication skills. This made Phils and my job so much easier. So, a big thankyou to the above three. I would also like to thank all of the parents, for their dedication in getting their child to attend training and traveling to Gala days. I appreciated your presence and comments throughout the year.

In combining the coaching duties this year with Phil Newton, it brought back some old memories and a great accumulation of rugby knowledge. We had played together with the Bathurst Bulldogs, won premierships together and developed our passion for this fantastic club. I know I am going to miss coaching with Phil next year, he was the back bone of the Team and I learnt a lot from his coaching skills.

With the assistance of former and current Bathurst Bulldog 1st Grade players such as Scott Johnston, Matt Waterford and Phil Tonkin the under 9’s were always going to be in great hands. Their enthusiasm was infectious, the kids would always respond well to their training drills and encouraging words. Thank you!

I thought the introduction of the Friday night games by the committee was a great decision. I feel the players rugby improved immensely because of these extra matches and it was awesome seeing them run around in their new tops. I am sure the parents enjoyed the evenings too.

Yours in Rugby

Just to start I want to stay “Two hands on the ball”. For all 44 under 11 Burrs this catch phrase haunted then for 2011, followed by the fear of ‘’Give me 10 push up”. To credit of the boys by the end of the season some sensational team rugby was being witness by both the opposition and parents. This was the result of all the boys training hard and giving their best.

It was pleasing to see that some of the boys played in various positions with the highlights being the forwards playing on the wing and scoring tries. We are still waiting for some of the forwards to apologise to the backs for taking their glory but remember at this age it about Rugby fundamentals which are well on the way.

A huge thanks to Stew Murphy, Glen Rudgley, Peter Kemp, Steve McRobert, Phil Mockler and Justin Enright who all helped with the coaching and running the teams each Sunday, especially while we were away in Europe. A great social atmosphere was created by a fantastic group of parents who showed support for the coaching staff and made it an extremely enjoyable season for me.

To all the players moving up to under 13 the standard, commitment and attitude of several players to Rugby and Burr’s made the decision for Presidents Trophy extremely hard. Congratulations to Matty Peterson who was a deserving recipient with his willingness and commitment to put the team first was shown throughout the season. He is a credit to himself and asset to rugby.

Once again without the huge efforts of our Committee members this club would not be as successful as it is. Special thanks to Justin Enright in his last year with Burr’s, your dedication to a thankless job is greatly appreciated and will be missed.

In closing without the support of all the sponsors, the teams would not have looked as professional as they did.

I look forward to another sensation year of Rugby next season.

S P O N S O R S

This year the Bathurst Burrs were very fortunate to benefit from an increased number of sponsors and supporters throught the course of the season. Of course without that support it would be all that harder to put players on the paddock.

Sunday Gala Day Jumpers continued to be sponsored by:

Under 7s and Under 9s Shanahans Family Hotel Under 11s Morse Group Accountants and Advisors

Friday Night Intra Club Jumpers were sponsored by:

Major Sponsor Westrac Under 7s Al Dente Gourmet to Go Under 7s Juss Gallery Under 7s Western Automation & Control Pty Ltd Under 9s APN Plastics Under 9s Richard Steele & Co Solicitors Under 9s Smith & Co Locksmiths Under 11s Cobblestone Restauraunt Under 11s Lloyd Hooper Plumbing Under 11s Sportsmans Warehouse

Our weekly players of the day in all age groups were fortunate to receive a weekly perpetual trophy sponsored by Sportsmans Warehouse.

We had an outstanding fundraiser night at Anne Ashwood Park during the season. This function was supported by the following:

Al Dente (Scott & Tammy Taylor) Australian Rugby Union Dimension Framing Land and Property Management Authority Shanahans Family Hotel Sportsmans Warehouse Robert Oatley Vineyards

Our canteen also benefitted on occasion from the donation of sausages to feed the masses courtesy of Devro Casings.

Our Parents and managers also much appreciably benefitted from the generosity of Bathurst Laundry in attending to the washing of club jumpers through the year.

Club Statistics CWRU Premierships The Bathurst Rugby Club was formed in 1874 and is the oldest club in country NSW. It has functioned continuously since then except for Rugby as a code being suspended during World Wars I and 2. During the latter part of the 19th Century and up to World War I, Bathurst produced many State and Australian representatives, most of them when there was only one code. Some of the early representatives were Jess Dibley, Bert Reid, the Barton Brothers, Tom Palmer and Geoge Anelzark – to mention a few. In modern times, the club has fielded Wallabies such as Ron Graham, Lars Hedberg and Marty Roebuck as well Australian U/21 players Matthew Stocks and Nick Lavelle. In addition to Australian representatives, Bathurst local James McClaren played many tests for Scotland, including the 2003 World Cup. Since 1976 (36 Seasons) Bathurst Bulldogs have won forty six (46) Grade and Colts premierships. Additionally, Bathurst Bulldogs have played in fourteen (14) of the last nineteen (19) 1st Grade Grand Finals. Bathurst’s successes in the CWRU Club Championship and Grade and Colts Premierships are as follows.
