The Battle of Fallen Timbers took place on August 20, 1794. It was the final battle between the Indians of the Northwest and the United States. The battle was for land in Ohio near the Ohio River.
The Battle of Fallen Timbers took place near Toledo in present-day Maumee. This is where the OHVA offices are located. Today, there is a park in Maumee (Lucas County) with a monument.
Fort Miami was built on the Maumee River (near Toledo). It was built by the British. A man named General Anthony Wayne led the troops against the Native Americans during the Battle of Fallen Timbers just south of this fort. The fort structure is no longer there. It is part of a residential development today.
There are monuments to remember/honor General Anthony Wayne. In 1929, the post office issued a stamp honoring General Wayne. It commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
The defeat of the Indians at the Battle of Fallen Timbers eventually led to the signing of the Treaty of Granville in 1795, which gave most of the land of Ohio to the United States. An Indian named Tecumseh (who fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers) did not sign the treaty and would show up later in Ohio History and Indian resistance.
