WARHAMMER 40,000 PLAYERS PACK

Welcome to Battlecry 2015 Warhammer 40,000 Tournament! My name is Wayde Francis and I will be playing the part of Tournament Organizer. For those who have not competed in a Battlecry: Congratulations and Welcome! Tell your friends!! To those who have competed in the past: Welcome Back (insert evil laugh here!!!!!)!!!!! This is the player pack, which contains all the important information you require to compete at in this year’s Battlecry. Important dates, tournament rules and other tidbits can all be found in this document.

I like to make sure that each and every Battlecry event is a fun one. If this is your first, I hope the experience has you returning in the future (like the suckers mentioned above...)

The PlayersAll the players that attend Battlecry 2015 are expected to conduct themselves appropriately throughout the tournament. That includes playing the game in the right spirit, making sure they have everything they need (dice, measuring tape etc., clear army lists and their armies!) and in general contributing to a friendly environment where everyone can enjoy both their games and the time spent in between rounds with their peers.

The tournament organizer (me: Wayde) will do his best to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and everything is provided to enable the players to get as much enjoyment as possible from the event, and likewise the players should do their utmost to hold up their end of the bargain. Most important of all, enjoy yourself!

The OrganiserThe organiser for the event is Wayde Francis. He is 100% committed to ensuring that your Battlecry 2015 experience is the best it can possibly be. His job is to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible, that you can concentrate solely on your task at hand and that is to play the best Warhammer 40k you can for 2 days against likeminded people that share your love of the Warhammer 40,000 hobby.

TOURNAMENT RULES

Playing the Tournament

You will participate in a series of six games (spread over two days), each against a different opponent.

Players will be matched against an opponent in the First Round based on specific (and confidential) guidelines. After that, in each round the two players in 1st and 2nd place (based on their points for Gameplay) will play each other, the players in 3rd and 4th place will play each other; the players in 5th and 6th place will play each other, and so on.

The only exception is that you should never play the same opponent twice; should this happen let the TO know so they can sort things out and offer you fresh opponents of a suitable calibre. The main advantage of this system is that it seeds players after the First Round, and makes sure that the final winner of the Tournament will have faced some tough opposition along the way.

What You Need to Bring

Any gaming material that you require to play, including:

Your Army At least two copies of your Army Roster This rules pack Warhammer 40,000 7th Edition Rulebook Your relevant (current) codex All relevant Official GW FAQ’s and Errata from the GW website Pen and paper Tape measure Dice and templates Five objective markers Terrain (we could make it worth your while…) Superglue/plastic glue (because accidents do happen…) Calculator (this may be handy…) Deodorant (I’m not going to say why; you’ll figure it out…)

Army Roster & List Submissions

All lists will need to be checked and submitted by the 6pm Saturday 31st January 2015.

All army lists must be submitted via e-mail.

Email to: [email protected] and please include “Battlecry 2015”, “your name” & “army list type” in the subject line (e.g. “Battlecry 2015 Joe Blogs Space Wolves”)

All army lists are full and final when submitted unless an amendment is requested by the Tournament Organiser.

Lists should be either a Microsoft Word or Text attachment to the email in the sup-plied format below. You should not submit an export from army builder nor any other list software. Any other type of attachment or spread sheet will not be accepted. Lists not submitted in the correct format will be returned. Please work with me to en-sure a speedy turnaround of list checking by the event referee.

All army lists are full and final when submitted unless an amendment is requested by the Tournament Organiser.

It is important to remember that when you use a point’s limit you can only spend up to the limit agreed—this means that in an 1850 points game you must spend 1850 points or less.

You will need a copy of your list to show your opponent before the game. In the spirit of fair and friendly game-play, opponents are expected to reveal what’s in their army before each game.

It would be appreciated that army lists: Contain details on the codexs/supplements/dataslates used Different detachments could be clearly “grouped” in the army list Psykers are listed with what Level they are

OVERALL SCORE BREAKDOWN

50% Gameplay15% Sportsmanship20% Presentation10% Army Selection5% Bonus Points

SPORTSMANSHIP (15% Overall Score) After every game each player will be required to mark their opponent’s sportsmanship.

Each game can be scored:

Extremely Sporting Opponent 5pts Sporting Opponent 3pts (the default) Unsporting Opponent 0pts

If you feel the need to modify a sporting score you can approach a Referee and explain why you would like to change the score for a particular opponent. This gives a score out of 30 which will be converted to a 15% contribution of your overall score.

At the end of the tournament you will be asked to nominate the opponent who you believe was the most sporting out of the six games. These votes will be used in the event a tiebreaker is needed to decide the “Best Sportsmanship” award.

PRESENTATION (20% Overall Score) The TO (or designated Painting Judge) will look at each army during the tournament and mark the painting on the following criteria:

1. The painting on the models is detailed (e.g. painting is uniform and neat, details such as belts, buckles, pouches etc are completed)- 4 points

2. All models inked/highlighted (e.g. discernible shading and highlights present, the highlighting/shading is neat and clean, some evidence of blending present etc) - 4 points

3. All models based and flocked - 2 points 4. Flock uses 2 different materials (e.g. static grass and rocks) OR made an above

average effort on their bases (e.g. molded cobble stones for example) – 1 point 5. Army has consistent feel (e.g. similar colors, units have distinct variations but overall

theme the same etc) - 3 points 6. Some models have been modified (e.g. clear conversion work to introduce variety –

includes such areas as green stuff/plasticard modifications, head swaps, arm rotations etc) – 3 points

7. Character/Centerpiece models are distinctive (extra effort has lavished on the character or centerpiece models to make them distinctive) – 3 points

These criteria represent a range. However, under the criteria a nicely painted army with a consistent feel attractively based with inking/highlighting, involving some conversion work and distinctive characters/centerpiece models will score the full 20 points.

Presentation Points give a score out of 20 which will be converted to a 20% contribution of your overall score.

ARMY SELECTION (10% Overall Score) Army selection will be done via a Blind Peer Review:

Copies of each and every army list will be sent to each competitor via e-mail on Sunday 1st February 2015. An excel spread sheet will be attached to this e-mail.

Each competitor will then mark these army lists. Each army list will have player names removed and replaced with a player number.

“Judges” (i.e. you) will then allocate a score based on the criteria listed below. “Judges” will be required to e-mail back their scores by no later than 6pm

Wednesday 18th February 2015. Those scores that are received by this time will be averaged out and used.

Judges will rate composition by assigning each list to one of the following categories (with 10 being the “weakest” and 1 being the “strongest”).

The following are descriptors for each of the categories: Category 9-10. The army would be considered soft. You would breathe a sigh of relief if you drew to play this army in the first round of the event. (9-10 points) Category 7-8. While the army isn't weak, it has sacrificed effectiveness for style and fluff. It has forsaken many of the stronger options in its codex. (7-8 points) Category 5-6. The army seems to represent a well-designed army list that seemed to place it with the majority of the other lists within this event and/or any standard Warhammer 40,000 game. (5-6 points) Category 3-4. The army has a VERY strong design and mix of units that makes it tougher than the majority of other armies within this event and/or any standard Warhammer 40,000 game. (3-4 points) Category 1-2. The army is clearly MUCH tougher than the majority of other armies within this event and/or any standard Warhammer 40,000 game. There are selections galore in this army that are simply there to make it a very strong list. (1-2 point) Each of these categories describes an idea of how you as a player would judge the overall “toughness” of an army. Each Category has a range of points (1-2, 5-6 etc.). Allocate one of these points as you see fit (e.g. “this army is a category 3-4, but if looks/feels more like a 3 than a 4, so I’ll judge it a 3”)

The score assigned by you, the panel of judges, contributes to 10% of your overall score.

Bonus Points (5% Overall Score) To be eligible to obtain all of the bonus points, players must complete the following:

Present their army lists on-time with their relevant codexs/supplements/dataslates etc clearly listed (2%)

Return their Blind Peer Review on-time (3%)

OTHER AWARDS

BEST SPORT

The Best Sport Prize will be awarded to that army that scores the highest score in Sportsmanship. In the event of a tie, Best Sport votes will be used as the tiebreaker.

BEST ARMY

The Best Army Prize will be awarded to that army that scores the highest combined points for Army Selection and Presentation. In the event of a tie, Players’ Choice votes will be used as the tiebreaker.

BEST PRESENTED ARMY

The “Best Presented Army” award is for those players who have painted their ENTIRE army themselves. The reward is intended to provide recognition for those people who have put their heart and soul into completing a truly unique army. If the army is either somebody else’s work or represents the joint efforts of more than one person then it is ineligible for this award.

Participants will be required to mark on their entry as to whether their army represents entirely their own efforts. In this the Tournament Organizer is relying on the honesty of those participating in the tournament and believes that nobody would want to receive credit for efforts that were not their own. If you are at all unsure as to whether your army satisfies the criteria to be included in the “Best Presented Army” judging please contact the Tournament Organizer to discuss.

The award will be decided by player voting in the Beauty Pageant. While it is expected that all armies will be displayed during the Pageant, it will be made clear which armies are eligible to receive votes.

BEST TERRAIN

The Best Terrain award will be judge at the same time as the Beauty Pageant. Do you have terrain just sitting around on your home gaming table? Do you wish to blow off the dust on your terrain and let your terrain building skills shine? This is your chance!

We would like to invite all players to bring their own terrain with them. Every reasonable precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of this terrain by grouping your terrain onto one specific table or group of tables. All gamers will be instructed to treat all terrain as if it was their own.

At the same time as the Beauty Pageant, players will be asked to judge for their favorite table and its terrain.

If you would like to participate in this award, please contact the Tournament Organizer prior to Battlecry 2015 with the amount of terrain you would be able to provide for this event (e.g. one table worth, half a table’s worth etc.) and the theme of your terrain (Iceworld, forest/woodland, cityscape etc.).

GAME PLAY AND RULES QUESTIONSThe primary purpose of Battlecry 2015 is to get together for the weekend, to play our favourite game and meet other players who share our interests. Finding ‘champion players’ of our games is a by-product of this, and we’re really much more interested in creating a quality gaming experience for all the people who take part, where they get to play lots of great games and meet a whole bunch of new players.

This said: we do understand that sometimes even the friendliest of players can lose their cool, especially if the dice have been going against them all day. The most common cause of friction in a game is questions about the rules of the game. Rules questions arise in most games of Warhammer 40,000, both because the huge number of variables involved in the game make it just about impossible for the rulebook to cover every situation that might occur, and because different people interpret the rules in different ways. In order to avoid arguments we recommend that you refer to the appropriate rulebook as soon as a question arises.

The rules used are the rulebook, the Codex and FAQ and Errata from the Games Workshop web site. The newest publication should be used in all cases. If the rules do not cover the situation, then roll a dice to decide what happens. In other words, a friendly dice roll should decide any questions that cannot be answered by referring to the rules. Please note that there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking an opponent if they can show you the appropriate rule or set of characteristics so that you can see check for yourself that everything is being done correctly. All that’s required is that you ask politely, and that you do your best to sort out any problems yourself.

If the problem still cannot be solved then you can call an event official and they may intervene. Be warned, Umpires usually give players one of two answers to any question they are asked.

1. They will show you the Rule in its relevant place in the rules.2. Roll a D6 to sort out any problems not solved by the above.

The decisions of the Umpires are final, and no further discussion will be entered into. Warning: The TO has a big stick!

MISSIONS

The missions used for the six games will be a mix of those from the Rulebook and new missions “created” by the TO for tournament play. You should therefore plan your armies for any eventuality.

A copy of the missions that will be used will be presented to players at the start of Day One of the event.

As there is only a limited time for each game during the day, it is expected that the players read through the missions prior to commencing their game, in order to be familiar with associated Universal Special Rules, Victory Conditions etc.

Because Victory Points are involved in all missions it is required that players be familiar with the Victory Points system (as found at the back of your Rulebooks) and have two copies of their roster on hand to ensure points can be quickly calculated (and probably a calculator).

FINAL WORDS

The Most Important Rule: The most important rule about playing games of Warhammer 40,000 is to have fun! Now while having fun may often be gained by mercilessly crushing your opponent's forces, never ever forget that you are both there to have fun. Whenever you play a game, you and your opponent are basically agreeing to duel according to a set of fairly abstract rules, with a theoretical ground scale, using representative forces and a thousand other subtle agreements that go together to make it work.

The battle itself is a shared experience and great entertainment for both sides of they are both willing to make it so, No one particularly enjoys playing a game with someone who is overwrought, irascible and generally mean, or who only plays to win at all costs. That kind of player soon has difficulty finding opponents because they simply aren't much fun to game against. So the most important rule is to play nice and treat your opponent with the respect you would wish to get back from them so that you both have an enjoyable and exciting game. If you can do that and mercilessly crush their forces at the same time, then you really are a winner.

All that remains is to wish you the very best of luck and every success at the event!
