HISTORY AND USAGE OF THE BUILDING

Berlin used to be one of the beautiful European cities. The Brandenburg Gate opened the baroque axis Unterden Linden and, via the Forum Fridericianum, led to theCity Palace. The buildings along the route, baroque toneo-classicist the Berlin City Palace, Armoury andCathedral offered a fantastic urban composition, which, essentially, has been perfected by Karl FriedrichSchinkel s New Guard House (Neue Wache), Old Mu-seum (Altes Museum), Palace Bridge (Schlossbrücke),Friedrichswerder Church and the Academy of Architec-ture (Bauakademie). The Academy building formed theapex of Schinkel s urbanistic concept for the westernSpree Island, an urban landscape realized by means ofcubic elements and derived from a landscape garden.Schinkel s Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) isone of the most prominent buildings of German archi-tecture at the threshold of modernity in the 19th century.

The Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) waserected according to plans of Schinkel as Prussia s firstsecular brick building on the site of Alter Packhof on thewestern arm of the river Spree. Inspired by Englishfactory buildings of the early 19th century the particularconstruction and building technique (serial construction)of the Academy as the first architecturally significantindustrial building in Germany was trend-setting formodern architecture. The building generated the type ofmulti-storey factory building (e.g. Hackesche Höfe inBerlin).

The building was structured by eight window axes, fourstoreys and two portals on the northern side. The wallpillars connecting all storeys were interspersed withwide tripartite windows. Individual storeys were con-trasted by cornices. Glazed brick belts structured andquickened the raw walls of the building clad in the finestbricks. The images on the terracotta relief plates insertedin the window parapets Moments from the History ofArchitecture (Schinkel) were, with the exception of theportals, the same on all four sides of the building.

instructs workshops. Plans for a reconstruction and useconcepts have also been published.

At the International Real Estate Fair in Cannes in March2001 already the Association s working committee Useand Financing of the Academy of Architecture to be re-erected introduced its plans for the reconstruction of theAcademy building and its use to the public. As yet it hasneither been possible to realize the plans for the recon-struction nor any other projects. The Berlin Senate, however, expresses an interest in the reconstruction of theBauakademie (Academy of Architecture).

EXHIBITIONS EN MINIATURE

The exhibition includes information panels offering factsabout the Bauakademie - Academy of Architecture -(institution and use, construction history, reconstruction),architectural models of the building and the model façade, posters as well as plaster replicas of the terracotta-reliefsas examples of the building s architectural decoration.

Exhibition en Miniature at ZLB state library (autumn 2008)

In 1799 already the institution Academy of Architecture for allRoyal Provinces was founded to serve as Prussia s centraleducational establishment for architects and construction engi-neers initiating the tradition of formal education. Among themost famous students of the Academy of Architecture were KarlFriedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) and Leo von Klenze (1784-1864) and also Friedrich Ludwig Persius, Friedrich AugustStüler, Johann Heinrich Strack, Johann Heinrich FriedrichAdler, Ludwig Hoffmann (Municipal Town Planner) and manyothers.

On 1st April 1836 the Academy of Architecture moved into thebuilding designed by Schinkel at Kupfergraben opposite theBerlin City Palace. The Prussian Construction Commissionheaded by Schinkel was also housed in the building.

In 1879 the Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) moved outof the building due to strong increases in the number of studentsand, together with the Commercial Institute, formed the RoyalTechnical College of Berlin in Charlottenburg (today, TechnicalUniversity of Berlin). The building was used variously until1945, for instance by the Royal Prussian Institute for the Photo-graphic Surveyance of Buildings (1885-1933), the FriedrichWilhelm University and for collections of the National Gallery.

Destroyed Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture)

In the course of the Second World War the building was heavilydamaged. The Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) waspartially reconstructed in the 1950s, but plans were abandonedand replaced with those of the GDR for the new Berlin centrewith government buildings in 1962. The site of the formerBauakademie (Academy of Architecture) and the plazaSchinkelplatz housed the GDR s Ministry of Foreign Affairsuntil 1996.

FRIENDS ASSOCIATION BAUAKADEMIE

Since its foundation in 1994, the Friends Association has beenpromoting the reconstruction of the prominent but vanishedbuilding of the Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) as anindividual and urban monument. The reconstruction of theAcademy building opposite the future Humboldt Forum withinthe Berlin City Palace to be reconstructed is one of the mostimportant reconstruction projects in Germany at one of Berlin smost urban locations. Moreover, the reconstruction would servedocumenting the historic past, thus following the citizensclearly perceptible desire for identification with the city s tradi-tionally established urban character.

The Friends Association Bauakademie also strives to re-establish the institution that lent its name to the building.

The Friends Association also publishes printed materials, organizes exhibitions (exhibition en miniature) and events and

STONE AND TERRACOTTA ADOPTION

Stone and terracotta adoptions are used to collect dona-tions for the future and true-to-the-original reconstructionof the façades of the Academy building. Donations arebased on different mould stones (rosette stone, normalstones, cornice stones and relief stones), ornamental platesand terracotta-relief s and range between EUR 25 andEUR 15,000. By means of the Digital Model it will infuture be possible to state and deposit the names of thedonators of particular relief plates (possibly also in thereconstructed building). Further information may beobtained from the separate brochure Stone and TerracottaAdoption (see also Model Façade).

If the reconstruction of the building were to be financedexclusively by the foundation s own resources and with-out using external funds the foundation s assets wouldneed to be increased by means of additional donations ofup to approx. EUR 48m. The amount of further donationsrequired to co-finance the future running costs of thebuilding depends on the institution s future scope oftasks.

SPONSORS / DONATORS

Interested persons may either participate in the activitiesof the Foundation for the Reconstruction of the Bauaka-demie (Academy of Architecture) as sponsors (endow-ment contribution) or support the foundation s work withdonations. The fiscal implications are identical for eitherparticipation or support. It is recommendable to consultwith a tax advisor before making particularly largeendowments endowment contributions as the scopeof fiscal options in this case is quite broad. Further infor-mation is available from the Friends Association Bau-akademie or the Foundation for the Reconstruction of theBauakademie (Academy of Architecture).

FURTHER ACTIVITIES

MODEL FAÇADE

From 2001 to 2004 the model façade (idea, project deve-lopment, outline planning 1992 to 1999: Dipl.-Ing. HorstDraheim) was erected in the context of an applied in-struction building site run by an educational society forbuilding techniques. It is, to the greatest possible extent,a true-to-the-original replica of the north-eastern cornerof the Academy building. Well-known sculptors such asEva Anderson, Marguerite Blume-Cárdenas, Heiko Go-mille, Sabine Heller, Sigrid Herdam, Andreas A. Hofe-rick, Karl-G. Möpert, Rainer Muhrbeck) participated inthe reproduction of the mould stones and terracotta.

In 2004 the model façade was integrated into the repre-sentative façade a temporary representation of theAcademy building using scaffolds and printed plasticsheeting created by the Association Internationale Bau-akademie Berlin. The construction of the representativefaçade was supported by an expert team including archi-tects, art historians and monument conservationists. Theteam ensured the representations to achieve highestquality to the minutest detail to conform to the generallyrequired standards of the Office for the Preservation ofMonuments. Hence, the model façade is to be integratedinto the building to be reconstructed.

The project Digital Model of the Academy s Historical Façadesby the Friends Association was conducted in the context of anannual seminar paper. The project participants, Mr David Borne-mann (TU Berlin) and Mr Thomas Rox (Rhineland FriedrichWilhelms University, Bonn), were advised by members of theassociation. A virtual model of the inner city was provided by theSenate Department for Urban Development. Technical documen-tation was made available by the architectural practice Jaeger(Wesel).

In 2009, Dipl.-Ing. Bornemann and Dipl.-Ing. Rox received thesponsorship award of the Karl-Friedrich-Schinkel-Association ofNeuruppin for their extensive, demonstrative and commendablework.

WORKING GROUP USE AND FINANCING

Under the direction of the Friends Association the working groupUse and Financing took up work in October 1999. The workinggroup brings together representatives from Berlin universities, abank, a project developer, an audit and accountancy firm and theassociation Agenda 4. The group s results were published(amongst others, at the international real estate fair at Cannes,2001, the exhibitions en miniature and in the internet) and arecontinuously updated.

In 2007 the working group, in cooperation with representativesfrom the Berlin universities and universities of applied science aswell as architects, engineers and construction associations, organized symposia discussing the reconstruction and the futureuse of the Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture). The resultsof these symposia support suggestions regarding the reconstruc-tion and use of the Bauakademie/Academy of Architecture putforward by the Friends Association and include the re-establish-ment of the Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) as aninstitution.

THE FOUNDATION FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THEBAUAKADEMIE (ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE)

In 2011 the Friends Association Bauakademie founded thelegally dependent, non-profit making Foundation for the Recon-struction of the Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) . Thefirst section of the two-part charter relates to the reconstruction ofthe Academy building and its future use (International Centre forthe Responsible Design of Living Space). The second sectiondeals with the operating costs.

The starting capital of the Foundation for the Reconstruction ofthe Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) is EUR 100,000 andis raised successively.

MASTER THESIS AT TU BERLIN

In 2004, Dipl.-Ing. Anke Horstmann and Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Hollangprepared a use and feasibility study for the reconstruction ofSchinkel s Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) in the scopeof the postgraduate study course Real Estate Management ofTechnical University of Berlin and as part of their Master thesis. The results of their work were updated in 2009.

MASTER SEMESTER AT BEUTH UNIVERSITY OF APPLIEDSCIENCE

In the summer semester 2011 the Master s degree course of theFaculty of Architecture and Building Technology of Beuth Uni-versity of Applied Sciences identified the investment costs ne-cessary for the reconstruction of the academy building on basis ofthe original building planning by Schinkel as well as adaptedplanning for the anticipated mixed future use including premisesfor retail and representation on the ground floor and rooms to beused for seminars and exhibitions on the upper floors.

USE / RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INSTITUTION BAUAKADEMIE(ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE) IN THE SCHINKEL FORUM

The Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) is to be reconstruc-ted as an example of sustainable construction using ecological, environmentally compatible building substances adhering to thespecifications for listed buildings.Analogous to the time when the Academy was originally establi-shed it is to serve as globally unique Forum for Sustainable Buil-ding (Schinkel Forum). Plans for the re-establishment of theBauakademie as an institution envisage an international, inno-vation-oriented place for collaboration of globally leading insti-tutions for building science contributing to the development of thecity of Berlin as centre of German research policy. The new Bau-akademie (Academy of Architecture) is to become an institutionfacilitating interdisciplinary collaboration in order to developsustainable solutions and contributions for controlling climatechange, shaping the energy turnaround and furthering infrastruc-ture and environmental development. The Academy is to pro-gressively form an international research alliance for buildingculture, which, at the same time, assumes responsibility for thecontinuing education of young academics.

For further details please refer to the statement (thesis paper) ofthe Foundation for the re-establishment of the Bauakademie(Academy of Architecture.)

RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ACADEMY BUILDING(HISTORIC FAÇADES AND INTERIOR)

The realization of the project Model Façade illustrates inan exemplary manner that the reconstruction of the histo-ric façades of the Bauakademie (Academy of Architec-ture) is indeed possible in the required quality. Inter-estingly, the original façade, bar some minor exceptions, remained unchanged in the course of time.

The building is to be used by the Academy to be re-esta-blished as well as further scientific and cultural institu-tions as an internationally oriented place for the transferand exchange of knowledge in the interdisciplinary fieldsof building and construction in the form of an

International Centre for Innovation, Events,Exhibitions and Conferences (Schinkel Forum.)

To realize this, the following rooms and premises aredeemed necessary:

Ø Central multi-functional hall separable intoseveral smaller rooms.

Ø Lecture hall and seminar rooms as well asoffices and rooms for exhibitions.

Ø On the ground floor as already realized bySchinkel himself shops (boutiques). Furtherplanned are premises for cafés and restaurants.

On the upper floor, room for archives could be providedand, if necessary, small flats or apartments.

INTERIOR WORK

A restoration of most of the former interior spaces ispresumably not possible as, in the past the rooms werealtered for and by former occupants. Richard Lucae, forinstance, erected a staircase for new improvements in theatrium in 1879. An evaluation is now deemed necessaryas to whether a number of rooms (and which) should beselected for a true-to-the-original design.

The inner support structure of the building to be recon-structed needs to assimilate the grid spacing of the façadeas used by Schinkel and also needs to consider originalstorey heights. However, due to functional constraints ofthe projected use variants the reconstruction of the innersupport structure necessitates modern adjustments. Sup-porting grid and construction will most likely correspondto current construction methods.

The Bauakademie (Academy of Architecture) has a floorplan of approx. 46 x 46 metres and a gross floor area ofapprox. 2,000 m2. The storey height is between 4 and 6metres.

To begin with, the reconstruction will include the groundfloor and three upper storeys. Despite the inclusion of thebase of the former foundations of the Academy as a buil-ding monument into the elevated basement (it was 1.5metres above level and also used to have windows) itmay be used normally . Dependent on planning therewould be an available gross floor space of betweenapprox. 8,500 m2 and 10,600 m2.
