Don’s Doodlings (I asked Lori Shepard, our new principal of St. Francis School to write something to kick off the new school year. Here’s what she writes:) We Are Called “Then I heard the voice of The Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’ ‘Here I am,’ I said; ‘send me!’” (Isaiah: Chapter 6, vs. 8) The teachers of St. Francis have been called by the Lord to do many things for our students. First and foremost, we are called to holiness. We are challenged every day to set an example for them to follow in faith, values, forgiveness, and gratitude. We realize it takes a lifetime to grow into the person the Lord wants us to be. At a retreat held on August 12, entitled “Growing as an Engaged Community,” the teachers learned the importance of keeping every student engaged. The presenter, Leisa Anslinger, stressed that if all students have a sense of belonging, then they will be drawn into a deeper relationship with each other, their teachers, and ultimately, their faith. How do we keep them engaged? We need to help them realize their gifts and talents. Once they realize the amazing talents that the Lord has provided them with, they will have a sense of value. Believe it or not, some students don't have the self-esteem necessary to feel good about themselves, or realize that they have any special gifts. As a result, they often don't contribute in class, or participate in anything outside of their comfort zone. Once a child feels valued, they will be more likely to engage in meaningful activities that will allow them to grow into the person that the Lord meant them to be. One of our goals this year is to build a community where everyone gets a chance to contribute and shine by sharing their talents. We will do our best to keep them engaged! Another in-service that the teachers attended was held on August 5 entitled, “High Quality Differentiated Instruction” that was presented by Cindy A. Strickland. Differentiation is a way of thinking about teaching and learning. It is a philosophy. It is not a destination, but a journey. The reality is all students are at different levels.

Did you know… The office staff has gradually been working on updating the membership roster. Although this process is not complete, we can tell you there are approximately 1,675 households in our parish. The records indicate there are about 1,250 “Giving” households that contribute to the parish on a regular basis. Some individuals do not use their weekly envelopes so we are unable to track these family dollars. Professional Fundraisers use the number of “Giving” households to help determine the dollar amount that can be raised and the number of families that will participate in a campaign. Our fundraiser consultant, Steve McSwain, states normally 50-70% of “Giving” households actually contribute to a campaign. Currently our records indicate 650 families made pledges/donations. We received 68 pledge cards that show a breakout of the following: 40 cards show $0.00 pledged with comments stating they are for the Parish Center but cannot afford to donate at this time. They state they will give as they are able (previously there were 58 in this category with 18 of these families making a donation). 15 cards show they do not support this project 12 pledged $0.00 with no additional comments 1 undecided Stay tuned for more updates to come!

Continued from Fr. Don’s Doodlings: The key is to find out what the students know, understand, and what they are able to do with that knowledge about a certain topic. Once that is established, the teacher can then "tailor" the lesson to meet the individual needs of the class. Gone are the days when a teacher might assign 10 problems to the students who need extra help in math, 20 problems to the average students, and 30 problems to the “gifted” students. Instead, teachers were taught the importance of creating a lesson that would better match the skills and talents of their students. For example, all students may only do 10 problems, but all will be challenged at their particular level. As a result, students will find success and grow into better students. The Lord is calling us to meet the needs of every student at St. Francis, spiritually, academically, and socially. We have been blessed to have attended two in-services this summer that have prepared us for this journey. We ask that you, as parents, also help us this year with your prayers and your support. Together, we can all have a great year!

Farewell for Fr. Duc We want to say farewell to Fr. Duc. Well actually we DON’T want to say farewell, and we don’t want him to leave St. Francis. We’ll have a reception on Sunday, August 18, from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m., in the school cafeteria. There will be light refreshments served. Please come over to thank Fr. Duc for all he has done for St. Francis Parish, and wish him well as you enjoy cake and punch and one another’s company.

Welcome We are pleased to welcome the following individual who recently registered as a parishioner. Please introduce yourself and welcome him to our parish. We want all people at St. Francis to feel a part of our great parish.

Jay Zanger

Fr. Don’s Doodlings (I asked Lori Shepard, our new principal of St. Francis School to write something to kick off the new school year. Here’s what she writes:)

We Are Called “Then I heard the voice of The Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send?
