W elcome to the May edition of BAWTRY TODAYBAWTRY TODAY.

How this year is flying by, already the blossom is in full bloom, and there is new growth everywhere and the daffodils are long past their best! In our household it means that Cricket has been added to the assortment of activities being regularly attended. Fortunately my eldest can walk himself to and from the cricket ground so it hasn’t impacted Mum’s taxi service yet - but then he hasn’t had an away match this year yet!

The next edition will be distributed to you from 30th May’ just ahead of all the Jubilee celebrations. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Monday 12th May.

Best Wishes, Paula

S hampoo with Champagne at Ye Olde Bell!

Hilary Levack, owner of Ye Olde Bell Hotel at Barnby Moor, was welcomed with champagne and strawberries before her shampoo! She was the first client of the stylish new hair and beauty salon, which opened during April in the hotel's newly refurbished

courtyard. Lou-Anne Austin and her team have relocated the business from Retford to launch 'SalonYou@YeOldeBell' with a wide range of ladies and gents hairdressing services and hair products.

At the opening, Lou-Anne said 'We're thrilled to be in this gorgeous new salon designed by Hilary and the hotel's interior designer, Tonia Wynne. Ladies love the fact that we offer 'girl friendly' free parking right outside the door and then no matter what time your appointment, this fabulous hotel is open for everything from brunch to a cream tea to an early doors glass of wine or supper with friends! The men just pull in for a pit stop, refuel with a pint and a haircut or wet-shave before they're back on track! The hotel also offer room service into the salon, so some of our clients have a quick bite and read our glossy magazines whilst their highlights take - the new 'Hair & Dine Lunch!' at SalonYou. We're also offering a specialist service to the hotel guests, which is particularly exciting with all the weddings, parties and proms coming up!'

The Courtyard at Ye Olde Bell is the latest refurbishment by Paul & Hilary Levack and offers fabulous new bedrooms, a fully equipped Fitness Studio, SalonYou and luxury accommodation for live-in staff.

Call SalonYou@YeOldeBell on 01777 709177 direct for appointments or simply call in at the hotel and ask for a showround.

SPRING INTO ACTION AS ASPIRE OPENS ITS DOORS Miss South Yorkshire cuts the ribbon at

Aspire Fitness and Health of Bawtry

Being one of only three results studios in Europe, Aspire Fitness and Health of Bawtry, South Yorkshire is now open and ready to help those that want a lifestyle change.

The new studio, run by Richard Matharoo who is a qualified instructor, personal trainer and nutritional coach, is tackling health and weight issues with a common sense approach. Rather than grueling exercise sessions that can leave people feeling deflated and demotivated after a few weeks, Aspire’s philosophy is to help people change their lifestyles and habits permanently so their unwanted weight stays off, and their overall health improves.

The health and fitness system used at Aspire is a combination of the very best and latest innovative exercise, nutritional and lifestyle changing techniques that have been developed by Richard along with some of the leading minds in the health and fitness industry.

“Clients train in small groups of up to eight like-minded people with similar goals, and each session is led by a coach. This ensures that our members can train with total confidence and motivation to achieve results,” says Richard.

“We recommend that new clients start with our 28 day kick-start programme where they can expect to drop between one to three clothes sizes in only 28 days in a safe and effective manner, and also gain a great insight into our unique approach without any commitment.”

Aspire had the pleasure of Miss South Yorkshire officially opening the new studio on Sunday. Caroline Welch, who is in the middle of preparing for the Miss England tournament, cut the ribbon and opened the new studio which has had a full renovation to adapt to the new style of training.

I dropped 1.5 clothes sizes in 4 weeks using Aspire’s system and 3 months on I’ve lost over 15 inches from my body and well over a stone in weight.

I can’t believe how clever and easy this system is to follow and my skin, energy and self confidence have all improved. I’ve struggled with diets and my weight all my life and can’t believe I’ve finally found a solution, thanks Aspire.

T ickhill & District Lions Club At Tickhill & District Lions quite often we’re not able to discuss the welfare projects we undertake as many involve helping local residents and so we’re

always very careful to protect the privacy of those concerned. However we know that many of you support our events and so like to hear about how your money helps, so this month we’ve got an update about one of our local school projects that we’re able to be involved with as a result of your support.

Grange Lane Infant school in Rossington runs a gardening club for their pupils. Not only does the club enable children to get their hands dirty and learn about growing their own plants, fruit and vegetables, but it also helps to create budding entrepreneurs as much of the produce is also sold to help raise funds to keep the club going. The club already gets a lot of support from parents as well as the teaching and caretaking staff, but we’ve been able to offer further support which we hope has helped to make their club even stronger.

We’ve achieved this by helping to fund additional plants and equipment including raised beds and compost, strawberry planters and a variety of fruit trees and bushes. We’d like to thank Walkers Nurseries of Branton who not only supplied many items at cost (making your money go further), but were also able to source plants which otherwise we may not have been able to find. These included special thornless Gooseberry bushes which were required to meet health & safety guidelines and were sourced and imported from a specialist supplier in Holland.

We’re really proud that since our help the school have achieved their level 2 in the RHS schools gardening scheme, and by taking orders from staff and parents for herbs, plants and other produce they have taken another step towards the financial self-sufficiency they are aiming for.

Just one of the many projects we’re able to help as a result of your kind support.

Today Arts Review

Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery http://www.doncaster.gov.uk It is revealing to watch the face of people entering the Museum’s main gallery. The looks of amazement are accompanied by loud ooohs and arrhhhs from all age groups. What has aroused their interest is a drawing exhibition of large portraits drawn with exquisite detail and assured technique. The artist Mark Murphy is from Manchester and this exhibition marks a departure from his normal practice as a painter of English landscape in the style of Bomberg and Auerbach – very thick and expressive brush work, and usually worked from direct observation in the landscape. These portraits are all worked from photographs – which is an odd thing for such a painter to do– as this is the province of the amateur artist, to work from newspaper cuttings and snaps, but his experience shows through, and the fact than he can handle pencil ( the hard-est of all drawing materials) albeit a 9B, on a large scale transforms these works into another realm. www.markjpmurphy.com Exhibition continues until 20 May Alongside Murphy’s portrait exhibition is a touring show from the Royal Geographical Society called Kabul to Kandahar. It is a set of 19th century photographs together on text panels and also includes maps, drawings and lithographs. What these pictures demonstrate is that the West has been politically involved in the region since early Victorian times and that the problems that we grapple with today began almost 200 years ago. There were three Anglo Afghan wars between 1839 and 1919 in a power struggle between the British and Russian Empires in an attempt to keep Russia from the Indian borders. These photographs show many scenes which look very similar to the footage we see on TV today, of dry and dusty landscape with poor and rugged locals, but the characters in these historical photographs, both British and Afghan are wonder-fully romantic, Westerners dressed in full Afghani dress and the Amir wearing a western 3-piece suit which was tailored in London! Researcher Sara Wajid working with the Afghan community in London collaborated to make this exhibition. Well worth a visit Exhibition continues until 23 June Harley Gallery, Welbeck www.harleygallery.co.uk Many of you will be familiar with the sculpture of Derbyshire based artist Jonny White. His large spider on the Gripple factory on Saville Street in Sheffield is one of the City’s landmarks. His exhibition ‘Beastly Machines: Automated Animals’ demonstrates his life long interest with me-chanics. He is a crank shaft and piston artist using the latest pneumatic technology. His large scale animal sculptures are humorous, imaginative, irreverent and often very noisy! Exhibition continues until10 June 2012. www.white-wray.co.uk

New Cinema Celebrates Official Opening

The completion of Worksop’s brand new Savoy cinema was celebrated on Thursday evening, 22 March, with an exclusive, Hollywood themed, launch party ahead of Friday’s official opening to the public. The night of glitz and glamour saw more than 200 specially invited guests walk up the red carpet to enjoy a champagne and canapé reception before being ushered into one of the cinema’s six screens to preview the cinema’s state-of-the-art sound and projection technology with blockbusting new release, The Hunger Games.

Guests at the VIP event included football star Liam Palmer, who comes from Worksop and plays for Shef-field Wednesday, Worksop athlete Tesni Ward who holds the current Welsh javelin record, and Crystal Lane, a member of the GB Para-Cycling Talent Team and world number one para-cyclist in both the 500 metre time trial and 3,000 metre pursuit.

Managing Director of Savoy Cinemas Ltd, James Collington, said: “It’s fantastic to see that the hard work from everyone involved with the project has paid off and we have been able to deliver a fist class cinema both on time and on budget. The launch party provides the perfect opportunity to extend our thanks everyone who has supported the cinema development from the outset and celebrate its completion.”

The Perfect Murder combines the elements of a whodunnit thriller with tense courtroom drama to breathtaking effect.

Tickets will be available from the SPAR in Bawtry from the end of April. We expect it to be a sell out. Tickets - 19th to 25th May £7.00 (Concessions £6.00); Sat 26th May £12.00 including post show buffet.

T he birds and the bees Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust own and manage the Idle Valley Nature Reserve off North Road, Retford. Our Visitor Reception has only been open since May 2011 so local people are still discovering that we are here and that they have

immediate access to a wealth of wildlife information and advice. If you haven’t been already, then pop in one weekend when the café is open between 11.30 & 2pm and see for yourself this magnificent jewel of a nature reserve on your doorstep. Everyone is welcome and we are here to help with your wildlife queries so please feel free to pop in and say ‘hello’.

It’s a busy time for birds as they find food to feed their young so please keep those bird feeders topped up and the water bowls filled during the summer. Many of those hatched and fledged will not make it to the end of the year; recent surveys show that even the most common of birds like the starling are in decline so they need your help.

Similarly, with bees and hoverflies, (our stalwart pollinators), they need as much encouragement as possible, so think about nurturing some of our native wildflowers this year, like vipers bugloss, oxeye daisy, meadow cranesbill and red campion. Did you know that hoverfly larvae eat aphids? Definitely garden friendly!

This year we are holding our first ever ‘Wildlife Gardening Festival’ on 26th May 10.30 to 3pm which is also hosting ‘The Great Garden Shed Tool Exchange’. We are pleased to announce our featured artist is a creative textile genius, Julie Willoughby, who will be arranging activities for children on the day – visit her site to see some of her work: www.zoomorphia.com . For more details about the festival, visit www.nottinghamshirewildlife.org/idle-valley or call us on 01777 713945.

T he Big Jubilee Lunch in Bawtry. The Big Lunch has been happening around the country since 2009, but this year, the Queen has added her support by an inviting the nation to have lunch together on Sunday June 3rd as part of her 60th Jubilee celebrations. I (Jonathan Strickland, the vicar) am hoping that everyone in Bawtry will have the opportunity to join with friends and

neighbours, and even if they are not particularly royalists, enjoy lunch and the afternoon to-gether.

Don’t worry, I have not gone crazy, I am not looking for somebody to cook Roast Beef for 4000! The idea of the Big Lunch is that groups of people organise themselves to have lunch together in streets, in gardens, on fields, in halls – anywhere that a group can get together. What do you eat? It’s up to you. Everyone could bring something to share, or someone might organise a barbecue and others bring bread and salads. Your Big Lunch could be a picnic or you could sit down round a table.

First thing to do is talk to your neighbours, see who else is interested and find out who can help. There is a website with good ideas and advice, (www.thebiglunch.com) and when you know who is organising the Big Lunch in your part of Bawtry, they can send for the pack, which has posters and invitations in it.

On that Sunday morning (June 3rd 10.30am), all the churches in Bawtry will be joining to-gether for our annual “Celebrating Bawtry” service, when we will be giving thanks to God for all that is good about our town. We are supporting the Big Lunch because we hope that it will be a way of strengthening community, and helping us all to become even better neighbours than we are already.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary Where does the time go, I cant believe we are into April already together with the lovely sunshine and the freezing wind and snow. There can only be this country with such a diversity of weather.

As a Sanctuary we have had our best 2 months for adoptions so we must be doing something right. Our kennels are still full, as the waiting list doesn't seem to go down. In reality we don't mind because it is far better for dogs and cats to be with us than stay in homes that are struggling for one reason or another to keep their pets. We must also remember that there are lots of people through no fault of their own need to re home their much loved pets. We will always be there to help and advise.

Unfortunately we are still also having lots of abused dog cases sent to us. One being a 12 week old puppy with a broken leg. She is on the mend and doesn't seem to have been phased by her ordeal.

We are great believers in not homing puppies with children under 5 years old. The reason being that as any mums with young children know, their work is cut out for them already, without the added stress of a lively puppy that chews anything in sight .

Another dog was brought to us with horrendous mange. This seems to be an on-going problem, if this condition is treated early enough it would not cause the poor dog such agony and it wouldn't cost the owner so much money they cant afford to keep their pet.

Their are still the usual problems regarding dogs being found with no owner in sight and no one claiming them, also dog stealing is still rife so please be careful and do not tie your much loved pet outside shops even though you will only be minutes purchasing a newspaper. We have had so many upset people calling us as their dogs have disappeared that way. There are also people out there that would wait for a reward to go up before you got your pet back. So please make sure you do not leave your dog unattended and it is chipped at least if it is lost you will be reunited with your pet almost immediately.

Don't forget we are getting into kitten season and check out neutering costs with your local vet, lots seem to have offers on at the moment.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that brought me towels and bedding throughout the winter months it has been such a great help keeping our residents warm and dry.

Also a big thank you to everyone that has collection boxes in their shops and particularly to Diane in Tickhill who gave us a huge bottle of whisky but something far more important than whisky was in it. It was full of money thank you so much.

Bawtry Town Council Town Mayors Annual Report May 2012

www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk

The report covers the period 1st April, 2011 to 31st March, 2012.

In an election year, April saw the last meetings for Martin Hall, Martyn Leese and Frank Johnson who did not wish to seek re-election for other reasons. May saw 11 candidates become elected members for 13 vacancies with Kate Sleight and Andrew West being co-opted to bring the council up to full membership. June saw the resignation of Terry Fisher due to work commitments, with July bringing Alex Calzini on board as a co-opted member.

February saw the resignation of Andrew West due to work commitments, and (I believe) for the first time in the history of BTC, the vacancy will be filled by a contested election, which will take place in May 2012.

Our meetings are regularly attended by members of the public, John Walsh, & Mick Vallow who earlier this year(2012) was taken ill and we wish him what we hope will be a full recovery and a return to our meetings.

During the course of the year the town council has given observations on approximately 71 planning applications to DMBC who are the planning authority/decision makers.

Austerity cuts imposed by central government on DMBC continued to have an effect on the parish, in so much that the whole neighbourhood management system changed, in that Bawtry and Tickhill became more akin to the area of Mexborough & Conisborough, with what appears less foot soldiers for the new area. The policing still remains with the South Safer Neighbourhood team, under the direction of Inspector Cowling.

Other austerity cuts were to greatly affect the Bawtry Library in that it was scheduled for closure but with the full support of residents, BTC & members, a strong band of 66 volunteers took over the running of the Bawtry Community Library on the 2nd March, 2012.The library now opens five and a half days per week, and a late night opening is also being discussed.

The Car Park operation once again is the main reason that the precept levied on the resident council tax payer (not the business rates – which do not come to this council) has not increased from its current £26k, nor will it increase for the 8th year running for 2012/13. Our car park operators continue to provide good value for money to Bawtry, often at their own expense. Council agreed a slight increase in the tariff charges which will become operative from the end of April, 2012, and re-lining will take place, with resurfacing being planned for the future. It should be remembered that the TRO in place covering the Market Hill Car Park, and the Byelaws are legal documents covering 24 hrs, which are not yet fully implemented by the discretion of the council. Despite, the inaccuracies of the social media networks (in an election campaign) BTC has not vetoed a taxi rank for Bawtry but merely recommended that the Market Hill Car park is not the place for such to be located for a Friday/Saturday evening . DMBC may wish to locate such on the High Street.

Our car park operators were also responsible in assisting the council in the refurbishment of the Gainsborough Road toilets which for the next 6 years fall under our ownership. The toilets, following a large petition, were opened to the public on the 26th September, during the day time, at a minimal charge. Although these facilities were requested, they are a drain on the council coffers and alternative methods of management will need to be considered after one year of operation.

Discussions on the War Memorial continue with the Director at Bawtry Hall, in anticipation that jointly a suitable access area may be possible from the grounds of Bawtry Hall.

Tickhill Road/Top Street/Pemberton Ings junction continues to be a problem that DMBC, despite a strong petition refuse to be moved on. Nevertheless the council will continue in its efforts to source a remedy to the situation no matter how long it takes. DMBC did agree to a change of heart after persuasion from BTC and Ward members with regards the school crossing patrol on Station Road, realising it did meet current criteria. A long campaign to recruit a warden I believe has now been successful.

The long standing issue of aroma from Tunnel Tech North continues and looks as though it will continue as Bassetlaw District Council back tracked on legal action and permit conditions/times. An action group continues to press the issue along with ourselves and residents should continue to report smells to Bassetlaw District Council/DMBC/MP’s/Ward members. We will not let the matter rest.

A youth club was resurrected, with a donation from the council of £444.25 towards room hire. Initially dates were irregular but for the past two months they have been on a fortnightly basis and with a better attendance. These are generally run by the neighbourhood team rather than the police as originally envisaged.

Once again throughout the year the rents for the MSG, Cemetery & allotments remained unchanged and this will continue with the exception of Cemetery Fees which have slightly increased for residents from April, 2012 and greatly increased for non-residents. The concession extended to Austerfield has also been increased. The MSG continues to be well utilised and in majority the users work well together in assisting the council to keep down costs, for which we are appreciative. The allotments have a waiting list, and we thank John Brouard for once again collecting rents, entirely voluntarily. The cemetery has a new Garden of Remembrance which is now being used with limitations on two types of memorial stones i.e. flats and desktops, in separate blocks.

Our Ward Councillors, attend most of our meetings and take up issues on our behalf and report back and we are appreciative of their attendance and support. (Full report will be available on our website).
