SPECS

In the 1960s and 70s, many of the country’s good keen men would play

footie on a Saturday, before going for a hunt on Sunday.

Sideline Sid’s latest car review was a big all-rounder, which could serve as a workhorse/tradies’ vehicle during the working week, before turning into a hunting, fi shing and shooting wagon for heavy duty travel during the weekend.

Ford turned the Kiwi utility market on its head in 2011, with the launch of the Ford Ranger. Utes had been pretty much stock standard for 30 years, until the 2011 launch of the Ford Ranger, which became a game changer in the utility vehicle market in New Zealand.

The 2011 Ford Ranger had a multitude of high-end features found in top quality sedans. In 2015, the Ford Ranger received a facelift that upped the ante, with more bells

and whistles and the introduction of a myriad of extra safety features.

Last Friday, the intrepid Bay Driver reviewer took a Ford Ranger 2WD Diesel XLT, out on a test drive around some of the narrow highways and byways around Te Puna, to try out the vehicle’s handing and performance capabilities.

First impressions were of a big truck with clean-cut lines, which were set off by the 17-inch alloy wheels. The double cab with a huge rear tray, provides a variety of options for work and play. While high off the ground, the stylised running board and inside hand grip over the driver’s door, make getting into the large-sized ute a breeze, even for an old codger.

Lifting up the bonnet

revealed a big 3.2L Ford Duratorq diesel engine that was raring to be unleashed into action. The all-new Ford technology had produced a big beast that delivers plenty of horsepower but gives an effi cient (combined) fuel economy of 8.9L per 100km.

Driving along Takitimu Drive on the way to Te Puna, Sideline Sid was impressed with the very quiet ride and the effortless gear changes delivered by the six-speed sequential automatic transmission. The Ford Ranger stuck to the road like glue, with acceleration to burn - and superb braking after a car shot out in front of us at the Bethlehem roundabout.

The technology in the All-New Ranger makes handing the big beast a breeze, with features such as the Electronic Stability Program. Greater control and safety in spades is provided by the Trailer Sway Control, Hill Launch Assist, Hill Descent Control and Adaptive Load Traction Control.

The Ford Motor Company says that trucks should be tough, not rough. The simple contours and functionality of Ranger’s interior were inspired by the bold lines of Casio’s G-Shock watch. The result is a spacious interior with some seriously smart storage. The Double Cab has more than 20 built-in storage spaces. Even a laptop will fi t

easily into the glove box, and a handy 12V power point in the centre console takes care of keeping it charged.

Then there are the things you just have to have, such as the dual zone climate control that lets the driver and front seat passenger set their individual ideal temperature. An added bonus is the centre console that can become a mini cooler to keep food fresh and drinks cold.

An on-board computer, sat-nav, cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel make for driver satisfaction. Getting out of tight spots is made easy, by a tight turning track, with rear park assist sensors and a rear view camera providing extra help.

However, what really impressed the grey haired reviewer, was the instant change from a work day vehicle to an outdoors weekend hunting and fi shing wagon. Drop the tools and work gear and throw in the rods and rifl es, and you are ready to hit the road for outdoor pleasure.

Wading rivers in remote country is no problem in the Ford Ranger, with key engine components and air intakes positioned high under the bonnet. A huge payload on the rear tray gives room for all the hunting and shooting gear, while the Ford Truck can tow up to 3500kg with ease.

We will leave the last word to Sideline Sid’s teenage grandson who went along for the ride. “The Ranger big truck was pretty cool and easy to get into the comfortable seats and there is a cool amount of room in the rear tray to carry big stuff”.

Every year in New Zealand, about 600 fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles and sons will

die of prostate cancer.

Many Kiwi men don’t realise the dangers of the disease, many won’t tell their loved ones, many will refuse to talk to their doctors about issues ‘down there’, and many will simply do nothing.

“This has to stop,” says Bay Rodders Tau-ranga member Cathi Barker.

At the end of September the club is hosting a Blue Ribbon September Mystery Cruise, Quiz and Lunch, with 100 per cent of money raised going to the Prostate Cancer Founda-tion NZ.

“This event is to raise funds for men’s

cancer research and support, and everyone is welcome as we want to raise as much money as we can,” says Cathi, who is organising the event.

“The Foundation receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of people to help them support men and their families, and to spread the message for men to get regular checks.”

Tie a blue ribbon The Mystery Cruise is 54km jaunt around Tauranga that will highlight the beautiful city.

Cathi says cruisers will also be given a quiz to complete during the cruise and the answers will be found at various locations throughout Tauranga.

“There will also be two activity stops where participants will have to get out of their cars

and perform board game activities,” adds Cathi. “The fi rst named ‘Percy’s Private Pick a Part Party’ and the second named ‘Tiny Tim’s Troublesome Testicle Test’.

“All the activities are aimed at raising awareness of Prostate Cancer, having fun in a family friendly way and giving participants a chance to win prizes provided by our spon-sors.”

The fi nal stop on the cruise will be at the Tauranga Citizen’s Club, who is sponsor-ing the event and also hosting the afternoon prize giving. Lunch is optional and will cost a maximum of $20 each, while children eat for cheaper.

“There will be a load of fun with more than 20 prizes being given out which were donated to

us from our very generous sponsors. “Dress your car and your family up in blue

and go into the draw to win prizes such as best blue’d out car, man, woman, girl, boy, team and so much more, even random car number draws irrespective of your type of car.”

Who, what, whereThe Bay Rodders Blue Ribbon September

Mystery Cruise, Quiz and Lunch will start from Bushy Park at 627 Pyes Pa Road, Tau-ranga, on Sunday, September 27, at 9am.

Cruisers will be asked to park up before being welcomed and receiving their car

sticker, blue ribbon and mystery cruise sheet. On arrival there’s a mini-

mum donation of $10 per car which will go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The cruise will then leaves at approximately 9.30am.“Blue September is about

getting the word out about prostate cancer,” adds Cathi. “If you buy a blue ribbon, paint your face blue, donate money to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or even tell people, you will be directly helping to lower the death rate and reduce the suffering from this disease.”For more information email the

organiser Cathi Barker at: [email protected] or to register visit www.softwareso-lutions.co.nz/blue-ribbon
