A t the beginning of every New Year, we get a clean slate to make promises to ourselves of better tomorrows. But the best resolution we can

make is to be kind to others. Mignon McLaughlin wrote in The Second Neurotic's Notebook, 1966, “Don't be yourself—be someone a little nicer.” We are lucky and beyond blessed to live in a community that makes that promise easy to keep, and the doing easy to jump into and just do.

A prime example is the SwingShift and the Stars magical event that just celebrated its fifth year of giving back. The results are finally tallied, and the totals are mind-blowing! $226,000 was raised. Of that, Food Rescue, the sole organization feeding the homeless in our area, received $78,000 through the dancing of Homer Nye. Dancing Dentist Kevin Fitzpatrick raised $41,000 for Traverse Health Clinic, which provides free healthcare for those less fortunate. If that doesn’t speak volumes about doing good and being kind in our community, I don’t know what would. You can enjoy a peek of all the fun of the final dance in the “Say Cheese” pictures.

Another example of TC doing good and giving back is the CherryT Ball Drop event, the party with a purpose. Front Street is lined with neighbors, friends and family to ring in the New Year. But the prime cause of the event is to bring donations of non-perishable food to fill the local food pantry shelves. This year, half of all donations were given to the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center.

Believing in the best in people is such an easy thing to do, and of course at the holidays, our hearts are full of giving. The challenge is continuing to give once regular routines kick in again. We forget and always mean to, but life just sometimes gets in the way. So inside these pages, Kim Burch wrote a great feature suggesting ways to mark your calendar and do a little good each month.

There are so many organizations and non-profits in this area. Maybe find one close to your heart with a cause you’re passionate about and start your journey to a whole new, more fulfilled you.

The other heavy subject was the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It had us all hugging our children a little tighter, and forced us as parents in disbelief to endure dark, difficult conversations with our innocent kids. I want to make sure you turn to the article lovingly written by Mindy Buell, who is the director of the Michael’s Place charity that helps families with grief right here in our region. Loss of life is something we all have in common. Sadly, it somehow touches all of us in one way or another, and Michael’s Place is an amazing place for healing.

On much lighter notes, we have some stunning winter images from an array of talented photographers that capture our beautiful area. And with all that snow, ice and freezing cold air, it seemed fitting that this Date Night should highlight a place to go and sit by a glowing fire, warm up and let the feast begin. We found that place to be Boone’s Long Lake Inn, and I want to thank owner Nick Boudjalis for making time to sit down with us. Warming up some more, what better theme for In The Artist Studio than the Woolly World of BaaBaaZuzu! Sue Burns and her daughter Hillary welcomed us into their busy Winter Wonderland in Lake Leelanau. 2013 celebrates their 20th year anniversary of making winter wear One of a Kind Fabulous!

The CheesiestThe Wineries of Old Mission held its annual GREAT MACARONI & CHEESE BAKE-OFF recently, with over 1,000 happy mac & cheese eaters (and, of course, wine drinkers.) BAY TOWN KITCHEN won bragging rights on the "The Cheesiest," and here is the winning recipe to whip some up at home and warm up any winter’s day. Pair this with a local wine and voila! Preferred was 2 Lads Winery.

ROASTED SQUASH AND SAUSAGE MACARONI & CHEESE

WITH WHITE AND YELLOW CHEDDAR

1 onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic, minced 4 oz. butter 1/2 lb. sausage (we used a breakfast-type) 4 oz. flour 3 cups whole milk

1 cup sharp yellow cheddar 1 cup medium white cheddar 1 cup mashed roasted squash Pinch nutmeg Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste 1 lb. cooked elbow macaroni

The squash for this recipe needs to be cooked ahead of time. Choose your favorite kind. It should be slightly overcooked and mashed well before using. Start with the butter, onion and garlic in a medium heat pot and sweat until the onions are soft. Add the sausage and cook fully, breaking it up as you go. Add the flour without draining any of the fat.

Cook for a minute or two and then add the milk, a cup or so at a time, stirring as you go. Continue stirring until each cup is fully incorporated before adding more. Once all of the milk is added, bring the mix slowly to a boil and reduce heat. Simmer for a few minutes to fully thicken. Add the roasted squash and bring back to a boil. Add the cooked noodles and bring to a boil again. Once it has come to a boil this time, remove from the heat and stir in the cheeses. Continue to stir until the cheeses are fully melted. Check seasoning and serve.

He is even opening in Biggby’s former location, where the coffee affair began, in Kids Creek Plaza on South Division. That Biggby closed in 2009 when Aroma’s took the space. Now that Biggby is back and owned by Kip Miller, I’m betting that it will be BIGGER than ever!

I didn’t expect the story’s very romantic beginning—perfect for date night! Proprietor Nick Boudjalis is not only a Traverse City native, but he was born at the local Munson Hospital (and here’s the romantic part) two days before his wife of 23 years, Theresa, was born there, too. Call it kismet, call it fate, or call it what you will, but it is definitely AWWW worthy! Five kids later and even one granddaughter, what better role models do you need for an evening to remember?

While we are going back a little, let’s catch you up on the history of the place. As the story goes, the original inn was built of massive pine logs and included the huge fieldstone fireplace by William R. Bellaw in 1949, hence the establishment’s original name of Bellaw’s Log cabin Inn. Bellaw was the head cook at Traverse City State Hospital. Along the way, the inn was sold and became a happening Country and Western spot named The Penny Bar, where the likes of Loretta Lynn and Stonewall Jackson made music magic on the dance floor. In 1980 Barry Boone bought it, remodeled it and

established its reputation as “the place” to come for Top Quality Steaks.

The in 1985 along came a young man named Nick Boudjalis. He joined the staff as a bartender to help put himself through school. He was quickly promoted to manager. In 1988, a huge expansion took place, unfortunately followed by a fire that damaged everything except that iconic fireplace. Nick bought a stake in the business in 1993, and by 1997 took over completely. Eighteen years later Nick is most proud of the unique staff and guest relationships that are such a core standard and so much a part of this beloved restaurant. Some servers have been here for 15 to 25 years, and they have had the pleasure to be part of generations of family celebrations.

Known to be “Hearty,” the menu can satisfy both smaller appetites and the ravenously hungry. Delicious appetizers include homemade onion rings, escargot and mushroom caps. Of course, the signature dish “must have” is Prime Rib, but the choices in hand-cut steaks

will have you oohing and aahing—think The Porterhouse, Filet Mignon, New York Strip, T-bone and more. The sizzling seafood collection will make you swoon; you’ll salivate over lobster, shrimp, stone crabs, scallops, salmon and fish. Yes, Surf and Turf most definitely ROCKS here! Whatever you fancy, dishes here will leave you smiling as you enjoy a vibrant evening. “It’s a warm, casual atmosphere, where the food is simply prepared so the flavors shine through, and the goal is to always exceed expectations,” says Nick.

Whatever your taste-buds desire, you will not be disappointed. This is why Boone’s Long Lake Inn is a true Northern Michigan landmark chosen for so many events. With seating for up to 400, the inn can accommodate large groups as well as intimate dinners. In the summer (I know it’s a dream away right now) the deck is a happening spot with a full bar outside, entertainment seven days a week and seating for more than 150. A few notes to make: They open at 4 p.m. every day for dinner and on Sundays at noon.

These days, Boone’s Long Lake Inn is a family affair. Four of Nick’s kids have proudly earned their keep waiting tables and bartending at the inn, and the family name “Boudjalis” is prominently displayed above the bar. In getting to know Nick a little more, I learnt his mom was the “other” legendary staple in town with Mary’s Kitchen Port. Sadly, she recently passed, leaving Nick’s brother and sister to take over.

“It’s important to live life every day,” says Nick. I absolutely agree. A cozy romantic evening spent at Boone’s Long Lake Inn tops the Northern Michigan list as truly LIVING.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY“Reports confirm that the U.S. flu season is off to an early start,” CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said in a recent agency news release. Flu season usually peaks in mid-February, but it can last into the spring. The CDC advises that everyone six months and older get vaccinated. The flu vaccine protects children from serious illness and even death. The youngest children are especially vulnerable to the influenza viruses that cause the flu. Every year in the U.S., an average of 20,000 children under age 5 are hospitalized because of the flu; they are especially at high risk for serious complications like pneumonia. Kids under 2 who come down with the flu are the most likely to need hospitalization. And kids between 2 and 4 who get the flu are more likely than older children to see a doctor, be taken to an urgent care center, or end up in an emergency room. Give your doctor a call and see what your best options are. In the meantime, wash hands and disinfect surfaces; these are your best defenses at home.

There are times in our nation’s history such as the assassination of JFK, September 11th, and Columbine, where we can say exactly where we were, when we learned these anguished news stories. Sadly another place is added to the list: Newtown, Connecticut, Sandy Hook Elementary School. My heart broke for all the families left to pick up the pieces.

Watching the television and hearing the heartbreaking details of this tragic event made me think, I hope they have a Michael’s Place to turn to like the grieving adults and children do in our region.

It is at Michael’s Place where the picking up of the pieces and the rest of the story unfolds for those who have broken hearts from the death of a loved one. Located in Traverse City, Michigan, Michael’s Place serves children, teens, families, and individuals with compassionate support programs designed to ease the impact of loss at no cost.

I have had the privilege of being the executive director of Michael’s Place for over 11 years. Throughout my time, I have met thousands of adults and children who have shared their stories of heartache and loss. They come to Michael’s Place and put their trust in us that we can make life better.

One young girl touched my heart from the moment she walked in. Her name was Cara and she was 6 years old at the time. She had this curly blonde hair and an infectious smile. She came to Michael’s Place with her mom and dad following the very sudden death of her

grandfather who died during a routine surgery. They did not have the words to even begin to explain their loss and desperately needed our help. So began the beautiful relationship with this family on their journey of grief into healing.

Michael’s Place provides weekly support groups on Monday evenings at our Family Support Center. They begin with dinner together and after the adults attend support groups according to their loss while the children attend support groups according to their age. Here they share with their peers the truth of what is happening in their lives without judgment or fear. They can be honest about their pain and hardship and don’t have to put on a brave face. They can share, laugh, cry, or just be silent.

The children’s support groups are filled with lots of activities. They share how they are doing at home and school. They participate in physical games and activities and work on projects such as creating memory books. Michael’s Place provides a safe place where growth and healing can begin.

Cara’s mom shared, “One day I sat down with Cara and told her I was feeling stronger and could now talk with her about her grandpa. With tears in my eyes I apologized for not being there for her. Cara looked up at me and said, ‘Don’t worry, Mommy, I have Michael’s Place.’”

Each representative will interview approximately 10 students. Interviews should run about 12 minutes in length and the interviewer will comment on first impressions, content, skills and technique. Interviewers will then also have the opportunity to comment on strengths and areas for improvement. Volunteers in Traverse City get hooked when they are young and continue throughout their lives. This gives our community its richness, connects us to each other and provides deep personal satisfaction.

Do You ZUZU?

The name BAABAAZUZU comes from the combination of ZuZu, owner and creator Sue Burns’ nickname, and BaaBaa for the wool. And here’s a little fun fact: When Sue and husband Kevin moved to Northern Michigan in 1986, they bought The Riverside Inn of Leland. Would you believe Kevin’s Lamb Dish was the specialty of the

house? So there seems to be quite a “sheepish” connection to success.

Yes, this definitely counts as Art. It all started when Sue, who studied at Kendall College of Art and Design, was completely heartbroken 20 years ago. As the now infamous story goes, Kevin shrunk her favorite sweaters in the dryer.

The sweaters inspired compliments galore, and being a long winter season, they were seen and worn a lot. The buzz grew, and Sue took on the challenge of teaching Kevin to sew. She was up to the task. “I grew up sewing like Danica Patrick probably grew up driving!” Sue explains.

Cool moms everywhere took notice and loved the snuggly creations. The line quickly expanded, and through the perfect merge of Fashion and Function, BaaBaaZuzu was born.

All BaaBaaZuzu creations are 100 percent vintage wool, upcycled and lovingly hand-created by local artisans. Each one is unique, just like the Winter Snowflakes. The designs keep us stylishly warm throughout the season, and include gloves, scarves, hats, vests and coats. DESIGN BEFORE BUDGETING

First and foremost, you need to hire a designer to develop the overall project, complete with drawings and material selections. Oftentimes, a contractor is the first to be brought in and asked to develop a budget estimate. Without having a design in place and materials selected, that estimate can only be a “best guess.” You should expect to pay a modest fee to have a professional in home consultation. The designer can only give you their best design after seeing the space, analyzing if adjoining rooms will be affected or need to be part of the flow, taking measurements, analyzing the natural light sources and the overall feeling of the space.

When selecting a design professional specific to kitchen and bath, you should develop a relationship with a company you will have involved from start to finish.

Most kitchen and bath firms include the price of the cabinetry design with the cabinetry package. This will save you money when you choose to use that firm to purchase your product from. Designers that also sell the product, have an extensive knowledge in fees associated in making modifications to manufactured cabinetry and the options the cabinet lines have to offer. Unless you have decided to automatically use custom cabinetry, having the designer supply the product gives you seamless transition from the design phase to installation.

EVERYONE KNOWS THE HOUSE, the road is so well-traveled today. It’s the big white house on Division with the carriage house in the back. Chances are, you have driven by 420 S. Division and wondered what it looks like on the inside, what it would be like to live in such a house.

WHEN THE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1896 as part of the State Hospital property, now known as Buildings #79 and #81, it was the home of the steward of the State Hospital and his family. The house reflected the steward’s position of great prestige at the turn of the 20th century.

As Traverse City grew and Division became the trunk line in and out of town, the house changed hands multiple times. It started to show signs of its age.

All of that changed in June of 2011. Angela Goodall, owner and lead designer of Kitchen Choreography, was meeting with a client to discuss a renovation to a home she had just purchased on auction. Angela noticed that 420 S. Division was going to auction a couple of weeks later. She was excited and discussed the idea of moving their interior design business to a new location—one with better visibility, a home that everyone knows—with her husband and business partner Michael. Old homes had always been their passion and renovating one was no mystery to the couple, who have lived in a historic home in downtown Traverse City for the last 15 years. A week before the auction, an open house was held. When Mike and Angela walked through the front doors, their minds were made up. It was time for someone to restore The Steward’s Residence to her former beauty.

The auction took place on June 25, when Mike and Angela were out of town at a family wedding. A very good friend and local realtor, Ron Williamson, stood in their place. It was a nerve-wracking morning, bidding via text and at one point thinking they had lost the bid. But a few minutes later, a text came through asking what name they wanted on the title.

Next came the task of approaching the Joint Planning Commission to have the zoning changed, getting financing within 30 days and beginning the designing and bidding process for construction. Angela and local architect Robert A. Yvon worked diligently to develop a plan that updated the structure but maintained

her integrity. The biggest challenges were that the home did not have a main floor bathroom and a new stairwell to the lower level needed to be added. A small, 200-square-foot addition, meant to look like a porch that had been enclosed somewhere in time, was designed off of the north end of the building. The porch on the south side of the home was carefully removed and a foundation was put in to create the new stairway down.

All building materials were repurposed. The Goodalls reused windows, siding and interior doors. The new door into the bathroom is the original exterior entrance into the kitchen. Barn wood from a barn in Bellaire was used for the flooring in the porch addition, beams from the attic were used as stair stringers. The Goodalls’ intentions were clear to anyone who worked on the house: The original structure was to remain intact as much as humanly possible and anything removed was to be saved. The electricity was all updated, but the original fixtures were rewired and reused. Air conditioning was added, but it was built into the cabinetry so as not to disturb the lath and plaster. The windows were fixed where needed and re-glazed, and the exterior was painted to match the original color that was discovered when the porch was removed to create the stairwell.

The Goodalls are very proud of the care taken to renovate the Steward’s Residence. The home very much lives like a modern day residence, but the design speaks to the era in which it was built. Stop in for a personal tour. The staff of Kitchen Choreography welcome you to their new home.

Turns out what you’ve always preached, “Don’t Leave the House with Wet Hair—You’ll Catch a Cold,” is really a Myth: The fact is colds and flu are caused by germs, not by a wet head. We catch colds by exposure to viruses. Despite this, in a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, 40 percent of mothers surveyed said they believed sending their kids out in the cold weather would cause them to get sick.

No Bananas About It!About 54 percent of boomers between the ages of 55 and 64 have high blood

pressure, and nearly two thirds of those over 65 do, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

If you’re one of them, you may be controlling your blood pressure with an ACE inhibitor. Brand names include

Monopril, Zestril and Univasc. Most generic ACE inhibitors end with the letters “pril.” These

meds can raise the potassium levels in your body, which can cause your heart to beat

irregularly, leading to cardiac arrest in severe cases. To keep levels

from climbing even higher, limit potassium-rich foods like

bananas, spinach and other leafy greens, sweet potatoes,

and salt substitutes that contain potassium. Talk to your doctor about other

medicines you take, and always read the labels.

The Winter Sun SetsThe winters in northern Michigan are really special. The snow and ice transform the landscape into rolling mounds of pure white crystal. I love being in the woods and along the shore, sharing in Nature’s casual pace.

On the night of this photo I was walking the shoreline at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula watching the sun slowly extinguish from view below the horizon. The infinite expanse of glimmering white snow before me was set aglow with the lingering pinks and purples of dusk. The warmth of that day’s sun had formed vast puddles, dotting the length of an endless sea of ice. This night’s magical light filled me up and erased a hundred days of gray.
