Heres number 4. We hope we are

becoming ondly amiliar to you. Maybe

you know us by name? (Or notwe still

love you i you are reading this!) Maybe you have

gured out where to pick up this new niche o a ree

liestyle magazine? Hello! Its everywhere. Well, we

try to be. But we can always do better, so helpusalongandsuggestplaceswhereyouwouldlike

topickthemagazineup. You do know you can

also read us online, right? Have you been on our

Facebook page? We share stunning photos o this

area we all call home every day. Be our riend, LIKE

us and join in the revolution.

So ar, summer is sizzlingjust like this issue. We

actually had to add pages! This is a good problem

and we welcome our new advertisers with open arms.

There are so many, I think we need bigger arms! And

o course we thank them or their wonderul support.

Our magazine comes to YOU ree. (I know, you cantbelieve itwere crazy!) How do we do this, you ask?

Our advertisers help pay or this immense quality, so

please pay it orward. YOU can help me thank them

in a BIG WAY by shopping local and choosing their

businesses. Tell them you saw them in our glossy

    magazine (so they keep advertising)!

Did you love the cover shot? As my good riend

Chris Klau says, Amazingness! Who knew we had

shipwrecks right here in the Bay. This eature will

intrigue you and maybe even inspire you to take a

dive! I am one o those people who only dives on

vacation, and I never thought o doing it here. I have

to thank ChrisDoyal again or allowing us to share

his marvelous photography and helping make us

    look so good.

As always, this issue introduces you to local

people you may not know. Open these pages

and experience their talents! The best part about

creating this magazine is we get to meet these

unique and interesting people who also happen to

be our neighbors, right along with you. People like

JimDeWildt, who is our eatured artist. He has

been creating amazing art on a commercial and

artistic level or more than 30 years. Then we have

the expert gardeners o the Friendly Garden Club

brightening our world here in Traverse City. Who

knew they have been doing this since 1923! We were

just going to do a little blurb to remind our readersto take in the stupendous views o nature on the

30th Annual Garden Walk. But then we did just a

little more so these admirable ladies can get the

    recognition they deserve.

Lelands historic Fishtown was our destination or

the home we were welcomed into, shot beautiully

by MikeDrilling o Windborne. (Hes probably

photographed most o your kids; i he hasnt, he

should because he is tremendous!) This home

is a classic postcard that epitomizes Northern

Michigan living, and its inhabited by true natives

MikeandBethGrosvenor. (That is a big deal!)

Speaking o Up North living, our Date Night nally

got to make an acquaintance with TheBoathouse.

You really havent lived i you havent been

exposed to a dining experience here with your

sweetie. There are bits and bobs in-between, and

well keep those or you to unveil and enjoy at your

leisure. The cherry on top is kept or the cherry lady

hersel, JulieMillen, owner o Benjamin Twiggs.

Her story will impress you, as she overcame some

personal challenges to Keep Calm and Cherry On.

So stick this copy in your beach bag or later. Or i

you peruse through it now, STOP, pour yoursel a

cold drink (maybe the Classic Mojito we have the

recipe or on page 18?), put your eet up and take

    time out or yoursel

The nice part o living in a SMALL TOWN is thatwhen I dont know what Im doing, someone else does.

Forget Me NotScott Edson is Going Big - and Not Going Home. Its his quest to end

Alzheimers, riding his bike rom the Motor City to Traverse City starting

Sept 13th. All in honor o his dad Bill, who suers rom the devastating and

heartbreaking disease. Worst o is my Mom, not only did she lose her best

riend, but she has to care or him too. September is national Alzheimers

month, Scotts goal is to raise $20,000, and he will bike the entire trip solo.

I want to do this alone and just do it or my dad. Well, kind o alone, his

big brother Chris Edson (owner o Edson Farms that dad Bill ounded in

1979) will be chasing along in the Ocial Motorhome. Scott, who also will

be doing triathlons to honor his dad too,(Wow!) grew up here and now lives

downstate with his wie Tracy and two little girls Eva (5) and Chloe (3). Once

he gets here (tired, hot, achy and cranky! Just kidding) Jim Smolak, his

good riend who co-owns 7 monks, will be supporting Scott by letting him

guest bartend or the charity too. I think the bar will be holding him up atthat point! Get involved and help give any way you can, they have created

a Facebook page and even i you just drink beer and give him a tip, you will

have helped make this agonizing disease a real and true distant memory.

With the kids out o school, Moms take on even more work in the summer. Dr. Oz has

shown us the dangerous impact that stress can have on our bodies. We are there 24/7 or

our amily, and sometimes (OK, a LOT) its a thankless job. Here are six ways to calm down

beore, during or ater one o those days!

    1Breathe.Deep breathing orces

air into the top and bottom o

your lungs, making you eel calm and

energized. Take just a minute or yoursel

to regroup and get a grip!

2Mantra.Repeat ater me: There isnothing as important as my health.I can be one minute late. I can do this

later. I dont need to be perect. Use this

and youll be amazed at the results.

3Realize. You need to take care oYOU in order to be there to takecare o your FAMILY.

4Focus. Pay attention to what youredoing in each moment ONLY. Stopthinking about the next moment. This

    WILL make you slow down.

5Rest. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier

and get up 30 minutes earlier. Try

it. Use the extra 30 minutes you gain in

the morning to prep or the day ahead.

When women eel like theyre prepared

and organized or the day, they are

    unstoppable!

6TakeaHotBath.Daily Stressesactually deplete our bodies o thenutrients we need to battle the stress.

To replenish, orgo 30 minutes o TV

time ater the kids go to bed and take

a hot salt bath. Stress drains the body

o magnesium and increases levels oadrenaline. The magnesium [in salt] helps

    to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating

chemical within the brain that creates a

    eeling o calm and relaxation.

You only live once ~ but, i you do it RIGHT, once is enough

But at least you know they were raised right and ed well!

Everything is made here, even the desserts and the bread.

Plus, every meal is made to order. The menu changes in

The wine list lovingly represents local, too, with every

The rest o the sta is just as loyal. Most return every

They all welcome you in and tend to your every need.

Doug believes that what distinguishes his restaurant and a

Remember the 1700s tale The Legend of Benjamin Twiggs in which great

    Keep Calm and Cherry On

Benjamins tale mirrors the lie in his successor,

Originally rom Pittsburgh, Julie moved toTraverse City in 1992 when her then-husband was

2004 lie, as it does, threw her a ew curveballs.

This change in plan, she could handle. She loved

Today, she recounts some unny stories rom

couldnt believe it when I started to get little

prickles o hair growing back! He thought

I was always going to be bald like when a

man loses his hair! Ater that battle, Julie

really objects to the saying some adopt to try

to make you eel better. Dont ever tell me

what doesnt kill you makes you stronger. I

    would probably punch you.

O course, she isnt really a violent person.

But she denitely was ready or a un

chapter in her lie. She ound it hanging out

with cherries. She was already working part-

time at Benjamin Twiggs (still trying to nd

that niche!) and the owner was struggling

but also araid to change anything. The

owner oered to sell Julie the business, and

she jumped on it! The brand has been the

original purveyor o Cherries since 1966, and

Benjamin Twiggs was the only place people

came as a kid or their Up North Cherry

    Memories. Now older generations are

passing those ond moments to their kids

    and grandkids.

Julie knew that the products were abulous

and well loved, and that her customers were

loyal and die-hard cherry lovers. What the

    business needed was some updatinglets

call it Out o the Cherry Crate thinking!

Julie had a ew tricks up her sleeve.

The rst trick was to hire an amazing sta.Hire people who share your passion, says

Julie. All o the time, people tell her, I want

to work here. It looks un! Her sta is so

great that customers constantly ask i they

are the owner. Julie thinks this is the highest

    o compliments.

Julie bought the business in August o 2008,

right as the country entered the recession.

But the blessing was at that very same

time, the Local movement started and

    the community proudly embraced small

    business.

A small upgrade to the logo was done,

and Benjamin Twiggs continues to ship

worldwide. Julies biggest joy is serving

    one-on-one with customers and personally

delighting over all the Cherrylicious Wares

in the store. (She just moved to a bigger

location a ew doors over.) Speaking o the

new location, the day ater Julie signed

the lease was the day they announced that

more than 90 percent o the local cherries

were destroyed! However, due to her strong

network o loyal arms and suppliers, she

is assured to meet all her cherry needs

this year! Her kids, you ask? They are all

grown and doing great. She is even a proud

Whether its long days on the Bay, dips in the Bay, hanging by

Alisa has been around water her whole lie. Originally rom a

and experienced bodies o water all over the world. Eventually,

and have had to watch The Little Mermaid at least

50 times!) She was elected President o the Grand

Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve (GTBUP) in March

and is the rst woman to hold the title. She has a

list o hundreds o things she wants to accomplish.

(Type A personality? Check!) At the top o that list is

increasing awareness, making GTBUP a household

name and raising lots o money to help GTBUP

    fourish and grow.

While having coee with Alisa, I learned a lot more

than just underwater stu! I learned about the Chert

Mines in Norwood, where Indians ound material

or their arrowheads, and evidence discovered there

o the glacial age and bedrock that reaches all the

way to Wisconsin, a link that is 10,000 years in the

making. That the Grand Traverse Bay was really a

large valley and the entire area was dry. That she

believes the Vikings were here. That Power Island is

called Marion Island by locals (I knew that, but you

may not!), and she shared stories o Bassett Island and

Dick Bassett, its namesake. And that somewhere (BIG

SECRET, SSSHHH) they are nding an underwater

Stonehenge! Wow! There will be more in-depth

    stories to come or sure.

For now, back to the subject at hand. Did you know

that the Bay holds sunken ships and protected

artiacts? Who Knew? Me neither, until I started to do

some research! The Grand Traverse Bay UnderwaterPreserve was ormed in 2008 and is the 12th trail to be

a part o Michigan Underwater Preserves. It is a non-

prot organization made up o volunteers. Its mission

statement is To sustain an Underwater Preserve by

enhancing education, research, and preservation o

our Great Lakes and maritime heritage, and by the

promotion o tourism and public recreation.

Our Grand Traverse Bay actually has 20 dive sites

that are all mapped out by the GTBUP or you to

experience. The Pure Michigan campaign has also

adopted the statewide dive trail, which will open the

foodgates or tourism, a blessing and a curse in thisplace we all call home. But whenever tourism can

bring an infux o money and awareness to our area,

    we denitely all benet.

So, what are you waiting or? Grab your fippers and

snorkel and experience the shallow treasures. Make

a date to go diving as a hobby at home as opposed

to something you only do in the islands on vacation.

(We are blessed to have the same clear water.) Just

remember the Underwater Cardinal Rule: Only look,

dont touch ( just like you would tell your kids)! Have

    Babiesand SunWhy do sunscreens say

    Whoever coinedthe term

    TERRIBLE TWOS

    ANONYMOUS

Toddler Beach BagWeve compiled a TODDLER MOM CHECKLIST or a un day at the beach, and a quicker

out-the-door experience. Lie is complicated enough; going to the beach shouldnt be!

(I you are bringing your cell phone, make sure your bag has a zipper pocket or just drop it

    in a Ziploc bag).

DRINKS: The sun is brutal and very

dehydrating, so fuids are a must (or both o

you). Hal-pint water bottles with sport caps

help keep out sand, and juice boxes are great

too. Put them inside a mini-cooler; one that

you can t in your Beach Bag is ideal.

SUNBLOCK: I you can apply sunblock at

home beore you leave, this is the best option.

But remember to stow it in your bag so that

you can reapply. The new regulations have

really helped, and there is even a NO Tears

option. Use SPF 50, at least or Toddlers, and

reapply every 80 minutes. Dont orget to put

    sunblock on yoursel, too!

    SWIM DIAPERS/WIPES: Disposables are

the way to go, but bring extrasthey dont

do well with accidents! Or use the swimsuits

with cloth diapers built in. These work really

well. Remember your wipes, o course, or

    everything messy.

BEACH APPAREL: Sun hats (you, too)

and T-shirts are highly recommended by

pediatricians, as they will block the suns

rays. Use sunglasses i your little one will

    wear them.

PLASTIC BAGGIES: Bring pint-, quart- and

gallon-sized reusable bags to store snacks,

clean diapers and anything else you dont

want becoming sandy or wet! (Use these to

    dispose o soiled diapers, too.)

BABY POWDER: Use this to help relieve

sweaty body parts, and shake some on your

hands beore eating to get rid o sand.

SNACKS: Everyone works up an appetite at

the Beach. Bring easy-to-eat items such as

cereal bars, pretzels or crackers. (This way,

you dont need to schlep a cooler.)

SAND TOYS: Keep it to a minimum. You wil

have to carry them back and orth. The basics

are a shovel, pail and watering can. Toddlers

always want someone elses toys no matter

how many you bring, so get creative with

shells, rocks, moats, sticks and mountains o

    sandcastles.

TOWELS: This ones a given, but make sure

you have one or every member o the amily.

CASH: Bring a ew bucks or an ice cream or

    cold drink.

MOM MAGAZINE: Dont even think about

reading a real book with a toddler, but you

may get a minute to fip through a mag!

    POSSIBLE EXTRAS:CHAIRS

    : Bring or rent.UMBRELLA:

Bringor rent. A WAGON: Kids can tote their own

toys, and it can double as a makeshit eating

area. CAMERA: Cell phones are great, but

consider a good old ashioned disposable

one, to avoid sand and water accidents.

WHY Summer Camps?BY JOHN GESSNER, GRAND TRAVERSE CONSERVATION DISTRICT

For kids, summer is synonymous with vacationa time to

decompress rom a years worth o school with no worries, no

commitments, and denitely no learning! While theres nothing

wrong with some good ol ashioned relaxing, its how kids relax

and where kids relax these days thats a concern. All around the

country, children today spend less than hal as much time outdoor

than they did just 20 years ago, as they become increasingly

plugged in to electronic media. In his 2005 book, Last Child

in the Woods, Richard Louv immortalized this diminishing

interaction with nature as nature-decit disorder and cited direct

links to childhood obesity, diabetes, attention-decit disorders

and a dwindling sense o environmental stewardship. Nature

Day Camp was created in 2008 in direct response to this growing

concern in the Grand Traverse Region.

So i any o these ideas resonate in your household, or i youre

simply looking or something un, sae and educational or your

child to do this summer, then sign them up or Nature Day Camp

and help them create memories that will last a lietime!

The Grand Traverse Conservation District oers several camp

opportunities throughout the summer. Programs are designed

or kids ages 4 to 14 to experience the natural world in a un,

educational setting at the Boardman River Nature Center and

Natural Education Reserve (a 500-acre natural area).

    Once Upon a Time

Local libraries in all the towns we cover have a great

Summer Reading Program: DREAM BIG or kids and

OWN THE NIGHT or teens. Its still not too late to jump in

and sign them up. And as a parent, you can still have a little

Summer Reading Program at home. Just tie a ew books to

some un things and watch their imaginations soar! Books can

take a kid anywhere, and the joy o reading instilled in a young

child will stay with him or her orever. Look at the phenomenon

that young adult books have caused lately as theyve beenbrought to lie on the big screenHarry Potter, Twilight, The

Hunger Games, etc. Its such a git, the way that these movies

have increased awareness o books and reading. Still, we live in

a digital world. Encourage your kids to switch o, get turned on

to reading and stick their heads in a great book!

Open Hearts. As an historic landmark in downtown Traverse City for more

than 100 years, Central United Methodist Church stands

proudly on Cass Street overlooking the beautiful Boardman

River. This church, with just over 1000 members has evolved

from a simple wooden structure built on donated land from

Hannah, Lay and Company, to a vibrant congregation rich with

    tradition and alive with faith.

The earliest members of the Methodist Church were known forthe energy and innovation with which they invited people to

Christ and welcomed them to their circle. Today at Central, this

tradition continues as they invite everyone to discover an open

and hospitable community of Christian believers who respects

diverse perspectives and resolves to love one another as they

    unite in their Christian mission.

Open Minds. The Mission of the United Methodist church calls its members

to Make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the

world. It is this very mission that has driven the people of

Central Church to rethink, reexamine and remold how they live

    as a church community.

Some members of Central Church have found a meaningful role

with the Reconciling Ministries Team, which openly welcomes

members of the gay and lesbian community to find their faith atCentral. Still others have found their ministry in serivng

with the Community Garden Team to work the soil and help

provide fresh produce to the Food Rescue program in the

Traverse City area. And, Centrals Community Outreach team

has embraced the growing population of homeless and

individuals in need by providing daily meals, showers, phone

By truly opening its doors to the Traverse City community,

Central Church has become a valuable partner in supporting

people from all walks along their life journeys.

Open Doors. Many of us in Traverse City have chosen this place for its vast

natural beauty and rich heritage, and are proud to call this

community home. As a gift to residents and visitors alike,

and in celebration of all of Gods blessings, Central Church

offers a unique outdoor worship opportunity each Sundayduring the summer months.

Church in the Park is a casual worship experience held on

the shores overlooking beautiful West Grand Traverse Bay at

Sunset Park in downtown Traverse City. Filled with music

from a variety of local talents, traditional scripture and hymn

singing, and thought-provoking messages, this experience is

definitely one to add to your Traverse City to do list.

Everyone is welcome, bring a blanket or a lawn chair,

relax and enjoy the piece of Gods creation that we call home.

Central United Methodist Church is a true gem in our

historic community, so we hope you take a moment the next

time youre in downtown Traverse City to admire the stained

glass windows, enjoy a quiet moment in the prayer garden,

worship with us at Church in the Park, or maybe even walk

through the doors in search of your home under the Centra

the Hidden Dinosaurs book, he worked

with a paleontologist or accuracy. Theres a

    Hidden Pumpkins book, too!

All o these treasures can be ound in his

gallery in Suttons Bay, where you will see

the sign to turn let o the also very well-branded M-22! As you pull up, the rst thing

to catch your eye is the Salty Dog Sailor

(kinda looks like Jim). That, too, has a cool

history. When I inquire, Jim tells me he was

actually commissioned to do the painting in

1974 as a restaurant sign; the restaurant was

located where Pearls in Elk Rapids is now.

Last all, he ran into the restaurant owners

wie. She shared that her husband had

passed away and that she still had the sign

would he like it? This brings the story ull

circle. In 1974, when he was just dreaming

o having his own gallery, he created thispaintingnow it graces the door to welcome

you. It also shows how his work stands the

    test o time!

Which leads us into today The beautiul

work that lines the walls o the gallery is

diverse, showing all his talents, but most

prevalent are his giclee prints. Giclee prints

are expected to last or 200 years, and

theyre the closest to an original that you

can get. Jims vintage-eeling, giclee posters

    gorgeously portray the beloved places

in Northern Michigan, and they resemblewoodcut pieces o art. They easily t into the

dcor o any home, rom modern to classic,

    shabby chic and everything in-between.

They inspire you to all in love with the

places all over again, like you did on your

rst visit. Jim creates them by using an

old Scratch technique that goes back to

beore old catalogs. Using a white clayboard

that he mounts onto oam core or some

density, he covers the whole board in black

India ink and scratches away, ree-orming

ink strokes, stroke upon stroke, that

magically morph into places that recallmemories or the art lover. The color

process is computerized, but even this

is hand-placed, built layer by layer in

    Photoshop by Jim, who says

his personal preerence is the Black

    and Whites.

Weve saved the best or last. Jim

lives behind the studio with his wie

    Marnie, a gited watercolor painter.

Their our kids are all grown, but there

are grandchildren to spoil. The other

highlight o his gallery is a present tohimsel rom long ago, a 1987 Harley-

    Davidson motorcycle that sits there

showing o. He didnt know where else

to put it, but strangely it works well,

making the gallery eclectic. Art has

been pretty good to Jim, and he to it.

He has denitely made his INK mark

in the world, and proved to that high

school teacher that he didnt need a

    plan B ater all.

Pillow TalkHeres a nautical spin on the ordinary, and a great conversation piece right on your avorite chair, window box or couch.

With the ocus on Michigan and its surrounding bodies o water theyre a perect choice to spruce up your living space

with a resh twist. Robbi Lindeman a downstate Michigander owner oSALT LABS makes these unique vintage map

and nautical chart pillows. Robbi shares with us The inspiration or my map making, comes rom years o travelling as

a teenager and university student in the late 60s and early 70s. You can snag these great nds locally, at Pine Cone in

Cedarville and Rau Art & Design in Harbor Springs. P.S. They are green too using eco-riendly textiles and printing methods.

Relishing RugsIll know it when I see it . Thats what many people say when

they hunt or the perect area rug. Theyve seen antastic scenes

in shelter magazines and want to create that eeling in their home.

But, the rug in their mind may never have been created and they

look or years hoping to nd perection beore their urniture

wears out. I this is you, heres a RugBuyersCheckList!

Start with an open mind. Bring your optimal size (not all rugs

are available in all sizes). Bring abric/paint swatches and apicture o your room. Bring pictures o rugs youve seen

and like. This will help determine your taste traditional,

transitional or contemporary, and ocus your search.

Dene what colors youd like to eature, but be open to the

act that oten a rug designer will add a touch o a unique

color to pull the design together. Pamper yoursel with

time to explore. Dont sandwich yoursel into 20 minutes

between the kids soccer games! This is a riend youll

    have or many years.

Its un to mix rugs up a bit! Dont be araid to let blue

dominate in one rug and red in another, as long as the

basic color schemes complement each other.

A room will be much more welcoming i

everything isnt too matchy-matchy. And, i youre

new to rugs, dont be araid to all in love with a more

sophisticated design. More intensity over time is

    more pleasing!

It is just as disastrous to have the wrong accessories in your roomas it is to wear SPORT SHOES WITH AN EVENING DRESS.

    AT HOMEIN HISTORIC

FishtownWe usually feature homes of people who moved here

to live the UP north lifestyle, after years of being

in the city, or after spending memorable summers

here. But this time we have deeply planted roots, a

bonaed local native, of 4 generations, welcome into

    Since 1917 The Grosvenor amily,

    whose geneology traces to the

    islands, has operated mail and

    passenger boats between Leland and

the Manitous or many years, departing rom

    Lelands historic Fishtown. The Manitou

Island Transit Company, which Mike and

Beth own takes people out to explore both

North and South Manitou Islands. These two

beautiul and rugged islands are about 15

miles o shore, and are part o the Sleeping

    Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

But, back to Leland and this gorgeous house,

the house was nished two years ago and

built by their son in law, who incidentally

lives across the street. Pulling in the

driveway you are greeted with a wonderul

    inviting eeling.

    An enormous door,

    majestically greets

    you, and as you

    enter your attention

cant help but veer let. Adorning the wall

is an original painting o Mikes dad as

a young man, delivering the mail to the

island and its an important part o this

amilys history. Being at home with his

Northern Michigan heritage is apparent all

around, the house, sailboats and nautical

elements are spotlighted in little nooks

and crannies and the tone is light and airy.

    In the main amily

    room the awe

    inspiring replace

    sits at attention,

    with Mystery and

Marvel, or it carriea secret! No one

    knows where this

stone came rom; it is a closely guarded one

even rom Mike and Beth. But never the

less they dont hold a grudge.

The Wow actor here is most denitely

the sprawling kitchen and both Beth and

Mike take turns to cook in it. It doesnt hurt

that Mikes rst cousin Tracy Scott along

with husband Paul have owned a kitchen

    company (Northwood Kitchens) since 1975
