Dear Parents, Staff & Students,
Year 5-6 Maths Masterchef
This week for something a little light hearted I wanted to share about our Year 5-6 MasterChef challenge which was the conclusion of our Super Maths group work on measurement. Mr Mottrom (Gary) and Mr Williams- yours truly (George) took our groups and we asked them to make a Cake in the Mug and /or Chocolate Balls. While reading recipes, converting and measuring amounts, the students had a lot of fun while eventually presenting their final products. We found some sour, some sweet, others soft and hard but eventually our winning pairs were: Dylan and Jake (Cake in a Mug) and Natalie and Naomi (Chocolate balls). But the real winner was that everyone had fun while learning.
Aston Shield
On Friday our Aston Shield was awarded to the school house captains of the winning house by honourable member Mr Alan Tudge. Points are collected across the school each week, with the houses receiving 4, 3, 2 or 1 based on their finishing order for that week. At the end of the year the points are added up and the winning house is announced. This year after a few barren years, LEWIS was the winning house, in front of Martin, De Castella and Flemming.
BSPS Breakfast and Thank You Parent Morning Tea

Inside the Classroom — Year 5….. A Glimpse Into the Future
Year 5 students had the opportunity to visit Bayswater Secondary College last Monday,
to experience what a day at high school can looks like. Activities planned for us on the
day were a music session including learning beat boxing and playing instruments, cook-
ing pizza, coding a sphere robot to find its way through a maze and creating a sign in
woodwork. The teachers at BSC also organised a sausage lunch and a school tour. Every-
one enjoyed the activities and meeting some of our ex-students during playtime. Big
thanks to BSC for inviting us to their Community Day, getting us there, providing a splen-
did lunch and organising the fabulously fun activities.

From Our PYP Coordinator
The Learning Community in the Enhanced PYP
With the Enhanced PYP comes a renewed focus on the learning community. This week’s article will explore
the characteristics of an effective and meaningful learning community. These are the types of relationships
between student and teacher, their peers, colleagues and the home that the BSPS community will strive for
over the coming years.
Prioritizing people and their relationships
Establishing partnerships among all member of a community, and recognizing what each member inde-
pendently and collectively brings to the community, is the first step in building relationships. Through these
partnerships we come together to build and to support a shared vision, mission, beliefs and values.
Successful collaboration exists with mutual trust and respect for the roles and perspectives the community
brings together. Structures are in place to facilitate focused and in-depth conversations about learning and
teaching, and decisions are made in the best interests of the learning community. All relationships are dy-
namic and support the well-being of the learning community as a whole.
In an effective learning community, members form mutually rewarding and productive relationships. There-
fore, it is important that schools create opportunities for the following relationships to flourish.
Students and teachers
Teachers value students for who they are—their personal and cultural identities, home and family lan-
guages, and their prior experiences and learning. The interactions between teachers and students, in partic-
ular, have a subjective and relational quality because the curriculum and learning engagements are a lived
experience. These lived experiences support teachers to know their students well—their strengths, inter-
ests, perspectives, needs and aspirations—in order to respond to their needs. Teachers encourage students
to reflect on their learning, sharing timely, specific and well considered feedback to help them set goals for
future learning.
Students and teachers who have established strong, trusting relationships work in partnership. Students val-
ue their teachers as facilitators and activators of learning, and collaborate with them to identify and pursue
learning goals. Students participate in planning and decisions that affect them, and feel supported and confi-
dent to take initiative and action as part of their learning.
Students and peers
Students establish relationships with their peers. Through peer relationships, they develop and practise
many of the skills they will use throughout their lives. They support each other by providing feedback. They
learn how to interact socially, build and maintain friendships, learn collaboratively and take collective action.
Teachers and colleagues
Teachers actively contribute to the learning of students and colleagues through collaborative practice. They
take time to plan, assess and learn together—inquiring into the effectiveness of their teaching, and re-

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-
Provide care and be a friend
Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to
Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)
Help a child sort through a problem or an issue
Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)
Connect with parents as the need arises
Refer a child to other professionals
Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back. flecting on its impact on learning. They ensure their professional dialogue is open and honest so that
learning and teaching becomes the best it can be.
Strong collegial relationships are developed through mutual trust and respect, focusing on professional-
ism, open communication and a support network. Teachers may consider the following practices to devel-
op collegial relationships.
Induction for new teachers
Regular staff meetings
Co-teaching opportunities
Professional learning communities
Action research teams
Inclusive learning support teams
Peer mentoring and peer coaching
Professional development programmes
Study groups
Use of technology to facilitate communication and collaboration
School, parents and guardians
Partnerships with parents and legal guardians benefit the students and value the perspectives they bring
to the learning community. They add richness to the community by being actively involved in the life of
the school to share decisions, exchange ideas, build on experiences and provide support. The partnerships
between home and school provide the foundation to support students’ learning, growth, health and well-
being and agency.
