Shop,Buy,andShare:Tripstothegrocerystoreortoystorecanbeopportunitiestothinkofothers.Nexttimeyou'restockingup,encourageyourchildrentopickoneortwocannedgoodstodonatetoaThanksgivingfooddriveorafoodbank.Sheltersalsoneeddonationsofpersonalcareitems(soap,toothpaste,diapers)ornewclothing(warmsocks,jackets).Checkwithlocalshelterstoseewhattheyneed,andhavekidschoosethesupplies.They'lllearntothinkofothersandstarttoappreciatethenecessitiestheyordinarilytakeforgranted.Nationaltoydrives,likeToysforTots,providenewgiftsforchildren.Askyourkidstoimaginewhatchildrentheiragemightwant,andthenhelpthembuyit.Theitemcouldbesomethingontheirwishlistorevensomethingtheyalreadyhaveandlove,likeacherishedteddybear.
De-clutterandDonate:Encourageyourchildrentodonatetoystheynolongeruseorclothesthey'veoutgrown.Letthemknowthatsomethingstheydon'tneedmightbeusefulforanotherchild.Suggestthattheycreateashortlistofitemstodonate,andthenbringthemtoadonationcenter.Involvetheminconsideringwhattheydon'twantanymoresotheywillhavenewappreciationfortheirtoysandclothes.Justremembernottoforceit:Ifthey'renotreadytogivesomethingaway,that'sokay.Avoidwarningthekidsthattheywon'tgetsomethingnewtoreplacewhattheygiveaway;theymayassociatesacrificewithlossorpunishment.Instead,findotherwaystocultivateasenseofgratitudeandhelpingothers.
VolunteerYourTime:Lookforopportunitiestovolunteerasafamily.Friendsandneighborsmayknowofagroupthatcanusethehelp.Servefoodatnearbysheltersorputtogethercarepackagesforseniorcitizensorsoldiersoversees.Showhowgivingtime,notjustmoneyorobjects,isanotherwayofhelpingothersandacknowledginggratitudeforwhatyoualreadyhave.Ordevotetimetoneighborsorotherfamilymembersbyschedulingagroupprojecttohelpanelderlyrelativeorcookamealforsomeonewho'sundertheweather.
