Happy fall! It’s back-to-school time, one of our favorite seasons at the BBAC!

Welcome to our new instructors and students, and welcome back to all those returning.

A full schedule of classes for adults and youth is designed to promote and challenge creativity;

there are always courses suitable for beginners, advanced instruction for those who want it,

and just about everything in-between.

I want to say thank you to everyone who contributed to our late-spring appeal and/or joined

us for our sixth annual Fine Art of Summer event. Fundraising is a fact of life for every

nonprofit organization and we are fortunate that so many of you care enough about

the BBAC to help keep it going in the best ways.

The fall also starts a new season of exhibitions that will inspire your imagination. The first

opening is Friday, September 8, and we hope you can be there. ALSO — please join us

for Sunday @ the Center on September 10 when we’ll celebrate our 60th anniversary with

a free workshop and cake for all — just like art for all!

Here’s to the next 60 years!

Best,

Annie VanGelderen, President & CEO

About the Cover Artist: Autumn Bildson

Artist Statement: Beauty is subjective. I believe there is beauty in the old, but is it also found in the ugly? In reality there is some-

times cruelty and ugliness. I listen to the news and fret over the terrible atrocities that happen every day. I must keep my vision

focused and look past the imperfect and strive to form beauty through my art. Like a dance that is preformed gracefully or a song

performed with passion, I crave to make visual harmony. It seems futile at times, but I have dreams for this world to be beautiful.

Those dreams keep me moving on, keep me creating art which for me is inspired from the true beauty in nature. Art is my life.

Autumn Bildson has been thrilling clients by designing and creating original works of art for over twenty years. As an ex-

perienced sculptor, she works in stone and bronze, both from her own vision and the visual goals of her clients. Her work

includes all styles of sculpture, from realistic to architectural to abstract. In addition to her own work, Autumn works at The

Parade Company in Detroit and teaches adult stone sculpture and youth art classes at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center

in Birmingham, Michigan. Check out her stone carving class on page 47.

Mondays Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain 1Instructor: Kerry Yaklin

This is an introductory class geared at learning the basic skills for drawing. This theory approaches drawing as a learnable skill that eases as we modify the process of how we “see” in order to draw more realistically. Many skills required to draw effectively are located in the brains’ right hemisphere process-ing; not the dominant, analytic, left side. Projects are therefore designed to strengthen and practice these perceptual skills with how the right brain pro-cesses information. By strengthening these skills, you can feel the joy at achieving realistic looking drawings by experiencing the mental shift that produces accurate results. Items covered include: line, positive & negative shapes, proportion, light & shading, etc. We will discuss materials on the first day, so bring paper and pencil to the first class.

Drawing: An Introduction

Thursdays

Instructor: Clara DeGalan

Drawing is the most immediate means of expression of awareness. It's one thing to photograph an object, but something else entirely to draw one. Successful drawing requires not only development of technical skill, but a refined understanding of the visual world, of how to transcribe that world into visual language. This course aims to develop skills in observational drawing, not only to technical proficiency, but to a sharpened and expanded sense of awareness. We’ll spend time observing and drawing the visual world in this class, with two major aims in mind:

1. Developing the technique to easily and joyously draw by observation2. Channeling those skills into a personal studio practice, and opening the door to both an observed and imaginative drawing practice.

At the BBAC, we do not accept that there are boundaries to limit anyone from access to art. The BBAC invites everyone to explore art—in their own time and in their own way—and offers

many paths to take...including some alternative and different approaches.

Meet Me @ the BBACNo prior art experience is needed for these art-looking & art-making experiences for individuals with early & mid-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The program is open to groups from human service agencies throughout the region. The BBAC also offers sessions for individuals still living at home.

During a typical session, a group will spend about a half-hour looking at & talking about art from a current BBAC exhibit. The group then moves to a fully-equipped art studio to create something based on the art they have just seen. Each person leaves with their completed project.

Participation fees are nominal.

The Art of CaregivingWhile programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s & dementia continue to gain attention, the needs & interests of caregivers are often overlooked.

This program—FREE OF CHARGE—is geared toward providing the caregiver with an art outlet that gives creative relief from the daily routine. Sessions include networking, informal discussion & different art projects.

Also provided: a take-home kit with supplies & materials reflecting the art session just completed. Caregivers can choose to share this with the person they care for or use it themselves.

Art of Caregiving sessions are scheduled every other Thursday through the beginning of June. Participants may choose a morning or early evening time.

Studio 1This is both the name of a BBAC studio classroom & a philosophical approach to “art for all.”

The BBAC & community partners— regional human service agencies—work together to provide art instruction for groups of individuals with a range of cognitive, physical & emotional challenges.

Studio 1 partners include JARC, Oakland County Children’s Village, Angels’ Place & Friendship Club.

Studio 1 was started in 2008 when the vision of “art for all” was just emerging, & remains a driving force behind our ArtAccess offerings.

ArtBridgeSince 2006, this program has provided intensive art instruction & mentoring in preparation for college entry to talented, motivated high school art students from underserved areas. Each teen spends one to three years at the BBAC completing core curriculum & elective art classes, interning with an artist or instructor & completing a digital portfolio for college applications. Many work as counselors at our summer youth art camps. We see up to 30 students each year & every one of them completing ArtBridge has been accepted to college. The program is free for participants, who are initially recommended by their teachers or principals. While ArtBridge receives intermittent support from foundations,

Once a month there are drop-in workshops designed as convenient, inexpensive opportunities to be creative & learn something new. Enjoy different, authentic art projects each month with all materials provided.

BBAC Scholarships

Jeannie Anderson ScholarshipJeannie Anderson was a BBAC student many years ago. Shown below is a sculpture she made with her daughter as a model. The lovely little statue graces our hill on the north side of the building. Jeannie believed that everyone deserved art experiences; and with this scholarship her family will help make that possible for years to come. This scholarship is funded by Family & Friends of Jeannie Anderson.
