Credit Card Interest Rates/Debt ReductionServices

Consumers are being inundated with telephone callswith a guarantee of lowering their credit card interestrates. Consumers are deceived into thinking it is theircredit card company or bank calling when it is not.These are for profit companies calling who will chargeyou a high upfront fee for something that they cannot

guarantee. Consumers are also turning to debt reduction services forassistance in these hard economic times. These companies oftenrequire upfront fees, make promises that are too good to be true, willonly deal by telephone or internet and insist that you make immedi-ate decisions or provide financial information before services and feesare discussed.

Job Hunter Scams/Mystery Shopping Scams/Work At Home Scams

Scams targeting job hunters vary and include attemptsto gain access to personal information such as bankaccount and Social Insurance Numbers and require afee in order to be considered for the job. Two of themost popular schemes are work at home offers andmystery shopping. Some work from home schemes

promise to teach the secrets to making money online, others claim youcan make money assembling items at home. The company asks for anupfront fee for information or products. In another scenario the con-sumers thought they could make some extra money by becoming amystery shopper and evaluating the customer service of various stores.The victim is asked to evaluate their shopping experience at a fewstores as well as a money wiring service such as Western Union orMoneyGram by wiring money back to the scammers. A seemingly reallooking cheque is supposed to cover the costs, but ends up being afake. The victim is out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Phishing, Vishing and Smishing

You may receive an email that looks like it is from anorganization you know such as your bank. The messagemay say that there is a problem with your account or thatyour account information has to be updated. You will beasked to click on a link and then be transferred to a veryprofessional looking website where personal identity

information and bank account information will be asked for. Vishing iswhen a consumer is contacted by telephone and asked to call a toll freenumber. When the consumer calls the toll free number they are asked topunch in a credit card number or provide personal information. Smishingis when a text message is received on a cell phone or other mobiledevice. The key common tactic is to get the consumer to either fill inpersonal information or download malicious software on to a computer tocompromise security and put your identity and money at risk.

Lottery/Sweepstakes Scams

We have all received letters and emails saying that wehave won millions of dollars in a lottery orsweepstakes located outside of Canada. Sometimesyou have to send money upfront in order to purchasetickets, and sometimes you have to provide personalidentity information, your bank account or credit card

information. The newest scheme involves receiving a cheque thatrepresents a portion of the total winnings. In order to get the rest, thevictim has to deposit the cheque and then wire thousands of dollarsback to the scammers supposedly to cover taxes or other bogus fees.The victim wires the money, but the prize never arrives.

Vacation Scams

Typically the consumer receives a telephone call oremail informing them that they have won a “free” tripand must claim their prize immediately. Someconsumers are also being contacted about a travelclub membership supposedly worth hundreds ofdollars. In both scenarios the consumer is asked to

pay an upfront fee. Don’t be fooled by a professional looking website,mailer, emails, seminars or presentations. Few legitimate businessescan afford to give away products or services of real value orsubstantially undercut other companies’ prices. Ask for all details inwriting including the terms, conditions and costs associated with thetravel so that you can make an informed decision.

Cheque Overpayment

A scammer contacts a seller to purchase goods orservices, which they have found, advertised onclassified sites like Kijiji or Craigslist. The scammersends payment in excess of what was agreed uponand advises the seller to deposit and return the excessfunds back to the scammer or a third party. By the

time the deposited payment is returned as counterfeit or stolen andcharges back to the seller’s account, the scammer has received thefunds and merchandise. Businesses as well can be the victim of thisscam. The scammer will contact the business and want to purchase alarge amount of merchandise and offer to pay by cheque or creditcard. Again the scammer pays a higher amount and asks the businessto wire back the overage.

Advance Fee Loans

Consumers and businesses have searched online andhave come across companies that are willing to lendmoney no matter what your credit rating. If so, does italso state that it would only cost you a small fee to dothis? Before you jump up and send in that processingfee or security deposit, be warned that this is likely a

scam and advance fee loans are illegal in Canada. You should neverhave to pay a cash advance for a loan. Many people have filled outthe application for their loan, wired their hard earned money andthen have never heard back from the company. Now, the consumeris out the anticipated “pre-approved” loan but also the processing feeas well.

Emergency Scams: Also known as thegrandparent or friends scam.

The victim receives a distressing telephone call or anemail from a friend or family member claiming that theyhave gotten into trouble with the law or have beenrobbed while on vacation. The victim is then asked towire thousands of dollars for bail, lawyers fees or toreplace money or items stolen. If you have been a

target or victim of this scam you should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Business Directory Scams

A perennial problem that has plagued businesses fordecades involves deceptive sales for directories.Commonly the scammer will call the business claimingthey just want to update the company’s entry in anonline directory or the scammer might lie about beingwith the Yellow Pages. Businesses across the Maritimes

have reported receiving a very misleading invoice from a company thatlooks very much like the legitimate yellow pages. This invoice is not abill but a solicitation for a listing in an alternative business directory.The business is later billed hundreds of dollars for listing services theydidn’t agree to or for ads which they thought would be in the YellowPages. Be very wary of the information that you give out over thetelephone and read all invoices carefully before agreeing to anything orsimply paying for it.

Home Repair Rip-Offs

Home improvements may be on your agenda, butfinding a contractor with reasonable costs andavailability may be a challenge. During the spring thaw,unscrupulous and unqualified people often show up tohomes with offers to do everything from landscaping toroofing to chimney cleaning. Some may offer to pave

your driveway with leftover materials, or even remodel your home fora low price. These fly-by-night operators use high-pressure salestactics and in some cases even frighten consumers into expensive,unnecessary work. Often times the work is shoddy and consumers endup paying legitimate companies to redo the work.

• Always check with the BBB for a report on acompany that you are considering doingbusiness with.

• Do not provide your credit card or bank accountnumber to any unknown firm.

• Control your information-limit what information youprovide on a social networking website.

• Always shred any unwanted documents, unsolicitedmail or credit card applications that containpersonal information.

• Do not open email attachments or click on links fromany unknown person or company.

• Be cautious of companies or individuals who offeryou get rich quick investment schemes.

• If you have won a prize, do not send money to thepromoter for taxes or other fees.

• Never agree to provide an upfront fee for a“guaranteed” loan.

• Before signing anything, read it carefully.

• Never let your debit or credit card out of your sightwhen conducting a transaction at point of sale.

• Carry only the identification that you need. Put otheridentification such as Social Insurance Number, birthcertificate and passport in a safe place.

• Never agree to wire money back to a firm orindividual if they have overpaid you for a goodor service.

• Install firewalls, anti-virus, anti-spyware and securitysoftware on your computer and make sure it is keptup to date.

• Report any suspicious telephone call, mail or email toPhonebusters at 1-888-495-8501.

4 – Money Transfers RequiredA large majority of scans contain scenarios in which

cheques will be written and money must be wired or trans-ferred to another party. Lotto, prize winning and employmentscams often require that the victim cash a cheque or transfermoney under their name to the con artist.

Protect Yourself – Know that wire transfers are untraceable,so if the opportunity is a scam you will lose your money and it willnot be found. Be wary of scenarios in which you are asked to casha cheque and return a partial payment for any reason.

5 – Something Doesn’t Feel RightThis is probably the most important and most often

overlooked red flag when it comes to frauds and scams.Almost everyone who becomes a victim at some point in theprocess of being scammed disregarded his or her gut feelingthat something was off or wrong with the situation.

Protect Yourself – Use common sense and listen to your gutinstinct– it is usually correct!

1 – Limited OpportunityMany frauds are designed to get you to feel like you are

getting a great deal or are part of an exclusive “club.” By playingup the “one time only” or “limited time only” opportunity,scammers hope to force you into quickly making a decision totake advantage of the great deal without having time to do yourresearch or think about the legitimacy of the opportunity.

Protect Yourself – Don’t let the “limited time” opportunity everbe your reason for spending money. Always take the time to compar-ison shop and do your research on the opportunity and personpitching it, before spending your money.

2 – Unsolicited ContactIn most circumstances the con artist will come to you first

with the intent of pitching some type of opportunity or coaxingyou into divulging personal or financial information. Unsolicitedcontact may come in the form of a mailed letter, a fax, a phonecall or voice message, an email, a link on a website or via anonline social networking site.

Protect Yourself – Always be wary of situations in which some-one is offering you an opportunity that you did not personally seekout yourself, whether by mail, fax, phone, email or via online socialnetworking.

3 – Personal Information RequiredThere are very few situation in which personal information

such as your name, address, birthday, Social Insurance Number(SIN), credit card numbers, banking information, PersonalIdentification Numbers (PIN) or passwords are ever legitimate-ly required by a business or organization.

Protect Yourself – Never give out any of your personal informa-tion (especially your SIN, PIN account numbers and passwords) toanyone, unless you have a personal reason to initiate a conversationin which such information is required. Always pay attention to whatinformation you are giving out, and ensure you are giving it to atrusted party with the appropriate security and protective measuresin place to store it.

Scams and frauds take many forms and shapes, but all fraudulent activities have the same purpose – to takeadvantage of the victum. While many frauds and scans use creative and innovative strategies and approachesto rip people off, most of them fundamentally use the same tactics.

In most of the case of fraud and scams that are reported to the Better Business Bureau one or many of thefollowing five red flags could have been an indicator to the victim that they were about to be ripped off.
