BC DISPATCH
February 2017 Bear Creek High School
9800 West Dartmouth Place
Lakewood, Colorado 80227
(303) 982-8855
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Second semester is off and running with students and staff engaged in quality learning here at Bear Creek
High School. I appreciate your involvement and commitment as staff works to provide academic challenge and
rigorous learning opportunities for all students. To that end, please plan to attend our Parent/Teacher Conferences
evening on Wednesday February 15th
from 4:00-8:00pm.
We have begun the process of planning and preparing for next school year. Students are engaged in the
process of registering for classes and should keep in mind their ICAP (graduation plan) as they make their choices.
Our incoming Freshmen families had an opportunity recently to learn more about our exciting academic, activity,
and athletic offerings through our 8th
Grade Orientation/Showcase. We are very excited to welcome these students
into our Bear Family.
As new Bears prepare to enter the halls of Bear Creek, we will be celebrating another wonderful group of
seniors that have started their final semester with us. These seniors should be working closely with their counselors
and parents to ensure that they remain on track for graduation in May. Should a student fail to earn the required core
credits for graduation, they will need to arrange make-up credit through on-line, night school, summer school,
and/or correspondence courses. Bear Creek has many intervention structures to support students should they find
themselves in need of help. Reaching the goal of graduation is a coordinated effort between home and school and
your involvement is greatly respected and appreciated!
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) recently released their School Performance Framework
(SPF) for the 2015-16 school year. I am proud to announce that Bear Creek High School earned a “Performance-
Low Participation” ranking (Low Participation is noted for the number of parent refusals for testing). We are the
only high school in Jefferson County to receive the “Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award.” Our SPF
rating is the 3rd
highest amongst high schools in Jefferson County. Congrats to students and staff for all of their hard
work!! More information can be found later in this newsletter.
Finally, Jeffco Public Schools is facing some tough budget decisions. The Board of Education is addressing
the 2017/18 budget now and your input is needed. Please learn more about the issues and weigh in on the options at
http://jeffcoschools.citizenbudget.com/ by February 10th
. Input from the online budget tool will be presented to
Board in March. For more information about the budget and opportunities for public input, go to
www.jeffcopublicschools.org.
Sincerely,
Mr. Lynn Torr
Principal

COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF
EDUCATION (CDE) SCHOOL
PERFORMANCE FRAMEWORKS
State Accreditation is the Colorado
Department of Education's annual accreditation
assessment report for school districts. The
accreditation process is a comprehensive system
which reviews many performance indicators in
school districts, including academic achievement
and growth for students in reading, writing, math,
and science. CDE’s District Performance Framework (“DPF”)
and School Performance Framework (“SPF”)
reports provide information about the levels of
attainment in each of the four key performance
indicators:
Academic Achievement
Academic Longitudinal Growth
Postsecondary Workforce Readiness (high school
only).
For districts, the overall evaluation leads to their
accreditation.
For schools, the overall evaluation leads to the type
of plan schools will implement.
DISTRICT ACCREDITATION AND SCHOOL
PLAN CATEGORIES The District Performance Framework (DPF) assigns
to each district one of five accreditation categories:
1) Accredited with Distinction: The district
meets or exceeds statewide attainment on
the performance indicators and is required to
adopt and implement a Performance Plan.
2) Accredited: The district meets statewide
attainment on the performance indicators
and is required to adopt and implement a
Performance Plan.
3) Accredited with Improvement Plan:
The district is required to adopt and
implement an Improvement Plan.
4) Accredited with Priority Improvement
Plan: The district is required to adopt and
implement a Priority Improvement Plan.
5) Accredited with Turnaround Plan: The
district is required to adopt and implement a
Turnaround Plan.
Jeffco Schools is Accredited and is assigned a
Performance Plan.
The School Performance Framework (SPF) assigns
to each school one of four plan types:
1) Performance Plan: The school meets or
exceeds statewide attainment on the
performance indicators and is required to
adopt and implement a Performance Plan.
2) Improvement Plan: The school is
required to adopt and implement an
Improvement Plan.
3) Priority Improvement Plan: The school
is required to adopt and implement a Priority
Improvement Plan.
4) Turnaround Plan: The school is
required to adopt and implement a
Turnaround Plan.
The SPF for Bear Creek High School assigns our
school a Performance Plan – Low Participation.
For additional information on accreditation, please
contact Lynn Torr, Principal, Bear Creek High
School. Additional information is available at
http://www.schoolview.org/
COURSE SELECTION FOR 2017-2018
Students will begin the registration process for 2017-18 in February. When the date comes to turn in the registration materials, they should have entered their course requests on their registration sheet. They will receive instructions on how to do this.
The timeline will be as follows:
January 31 – Registration materials distributed to 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students in Connections. February 2nd-10th – All 9th through 11th grade students will have a scheduled time to turn in registration materials to the counselors and enter their requests. AP Contracts must be turned in with registration materials. They will be handed out with registration materials on January 31st.
FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CHILDREN’S
DENTAL HELATH MONTH
Here are some tips for selecting and eating foods
that are more healthful to your child’s teeth:
Keep fruits and vegetables in your house
to offer as "healthy snacks" instead of
carbohydrates. Choose fruits and
vegetables that contain a high volume of
water, such as pears, melons, celery, and
cucumbers. Limit bananas and raisins, as
these contain concentrated sugar. You
should brush immediately after these fruits
are eaten.
Serve cheese with lunch or as a snack. Cheese, especially cheddar, Monterey Jack,
Swiss, and other aged cheeses, help to
trigger the flow of saliva, which helps wash
food particles away from teeth.
Avoid sticky, chewy foods. Raisins, dried
figs, granola bars, oatmeal or peanut butter
cookies, jelly beans, caramel, honey,
molasses, and syrup stick to teeth, making it
difficult for saliva to wash away. If your
child consumes these types of products,
have him or her brush their teeth
immediately after eating.
Serve sugary treats with meals, not as
snacks. If you plan to give your child any
sweets, give them as desserts immediately
following the meal. There’s usually an
increased amount of saliva in the mouth
around mealtime, making it easier to wash
food away from teeth. The mealtime
beverage also helps to wash away food
particles on teeth.
Get your children in the habit of eating as
few snacks as possible. The frequency of
snacking is far more important than the
quantity consumed. Time between meals
allows saliva to wash away food particles
that bacteria would otherwise feast on.
Frequent snacking, without brushing
immediately afterwards, provides constant
fuel to feed bacteria, which leads to plaque
development and tooth decay. Try to limit
snacks as much as possible and to no more
than one or two a day. Brush teeth
immediately after consuming the snack, if
possible.
Avoid sugary foods that linger on the
teeth. Lollipops, hard candies, cough drops,
and mints all contribute to tooth decay
because they continuously coat the teeth
with sugar.
Buy foods that are sugar-free or
unsweetened.
Never put your baby to bed with a bottle
filled with milk, formula, juice, or soda. If
your baby needs a bottle at bedtime, fill it
with plain water.
Offer your child plain water instead of
juice or soda. Juices, sodas, and even milk
contain sugar. Water does not harm the teeth
and aids in washing away any food particles
that may be clinging to teeth.
Include good sources of calcium in your child’s
diet to build strong teeth. Good sources include
milk, broccoli, and yogurt.
2015-2016 DISTRICT ANNUAL REPORT AVAILABLE
Each year, state and federal law requires school districts to publish an annual report to provide parents and the community with information about performance. Jeffco’s document talks about student achievement, how the taxpayer’s money is spent for education and highlights of the year’s activities. The federal “No Child Left Behind” law and the Colorado Department of Education specify that certain information must be included in the annual report, such as assessment and accountability data, and information about the qualification of the district’s teachers. In addition, Jeffco Public Schools Strategic Planning and Advisory Council, a citizens advisory group, also provides details about its activities for the year.
A copy of the 2015-2016 Jeffco Public Schools Annual Report to the Community can be obtained at any school or viewed online at: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/publications/annual_reports/index.html.
The Colorado Department of Education also provides information for parents about school performance online at: http://www.schoolview.org.
UPDATE SCHOOL CONTACT
INFORMATION During registration this school year, parents
completed contact information for their students in
Jeffco Connect, the school district’s online student
information system. The contact information allows
the school to contact parents, guardians and care-
givers about emergencies and other important
school-related issues. Parents should now log on to
Jeffco Connect to review this information and make
any necessary updates so the school will have up-to-
date contact information. Parents can log on to
Jeffco Connect at: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/jeffco_connect/index.html
Parents should also ensure that the school
can contact them through School Messenger, the
emergency contact system. Please log on to School
Messenger and review the account settings to
ensure that the message settings have not been
blocked. Log on at: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/schoolmessenger/index.html
AFTER PROM PLANNING Attention Parents: We need your help!
After Prom is held every year after
the dance as a way for students to continue to celebrate in a safe environment. In order to make this event happen, we need parent support. We need volunteers to not only help with the planning, but also the event on April 21, 2017.
If you are interested in helping in any capacity, please email Mrs. Cole at [email protected] or call her at 303-982-8759.

Here’s to your We all know how difficult it is to change habits! Developing healthy eating habits at a young age can be the surest way to assure a
long and healthy life. Start with these eight strategies to kick-start your way toward a heart-healthy diet.
How much you eat is just as important as what you eat. Portions served in restaurants are often more than anyone needs. Eating more of low-calorie, nutrient-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and less of high-calorie, high-sodium foods, such as refined, processed or fast foods, can shape up your diet as well as your heart and waistline.
2. Eat more vegetables and fruits
Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Vegetables and fruits are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables and fruits contain substances found in plants that may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Eating more fruits and vegetables may help you eat less high-fat foods, such as meat, cheese and snack foods.
3. Select whole grains
Whole grains are good sources of fiber and other nutrients that play a role in regulating blood pressure and heart health. You can increase the amount of whole grains in a heart-healthy diet by making simple substitutions for refined grain products.
4. Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol
Limiting how much saturated and trans fats you eat is an important step to reduce your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of coronary artery disease. The best way to reduce saturated and trans fats in your diet is to limit the amount of solid fats — butter, margarine and shortening — you add to food when cooking and serving.
5. Choose low-fat protein sources
Lean meat, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products, and egg whites or egg substitutes are some of your best sources of protein. But be careful to choose lower fat options, such as skim milk rather than whole milk and skinless chicken breasts rather than fried chicken patties.
6. Reduce the sodium in your food
Eating a lot of sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Reducing sodium is an important part of a heart-healthy diet. Much of the salt you eat comes from canned or processed foods, such as soups and frozen dinners. Eating fresh foods and making your own soups and stews can reduce the amount of salt you eat.
7. Plan ahead: Create daily menus
You know what foods to feature in your heart-healthy diet and which ones to limit. Now it's time to put your plans into action.
8. Allow yourself an occasional treat
Allow yourself an indulgence every now and then. A candy bar or handful of potato chips won't derail your heart-healthy diet. But don't let it turn into an excuse for giving up on your healthy-eating plan.
Flu Symptoms & When to Call Your Health Provider
Flu Symptoms:
The flu is a respiratory illness that affects the lungs and respiratory system. There is no such thing as the stomach flu. The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot. Please call 303-232-6301 for a flu shot appointment at JCPH's Arvada or Lakewood sites. Before making your
appointment, check the recorded JCPH flu hotline at 303-239-7161 for flu program and vaccine availability information.
Symptoms:
Fever - Usually 102 Fahrenheit, but can go up to 104 Fahrenheit and usually lasts three to four days.
Headache, sudden onset and can be severe. Sore throat.
Muscle aches, often severe. Coughing, which can become severe.
Tiredness and weakness, which can last two or more weeks. Sneezing. Runny nose.
When Parents Should Call Health Care Provider:
Call if the child has a high fever that does not respond to over-the-counter fever medications, including acetominophen or ibuprofen.; This could signal a more serious
infection. o Do not give children or adolescents who are sick with flu or fever aspirin or
medications containing salicylates, such as some medications used for nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
o The fever of flu usually lasts three-to-five days. Parents should call their health
care provider if their child's fever lasts longer or returns. Call if your child is listless or has no interest in playing or other activities, especially after
their fever comes down after acetominophen or ibuprofen. Call if your child is inconsolable, that is, irritable and cannot be calmed down. Call if your child is not drinking fluids or not keeping fluids down. Poor fluid intake can
lead to dehydration, which can be very serious in children. Prolonged diarrhea can also lead to dehydration. Call if your child has difficulty breathing, or exhibits
Fast, hard breathing. Flu is a respiratory disease that can infect the lungs, and if your child is working hard to breathe, your health care provider will need to assess the situation.
