Head Teacher: Ms. Lindsay Holliday

Coordinator: Ms. Gayle Beavil

At Second Street Community School, we are committed to be a respectful,

joyful, and safe learning environment where we all strive to be our best.

BC Redesigned Curriculum Core Competencies: Belief Statements

As reviewed in past newsletters, the core competencies along with literacy and numeracy foundations are

at the centre of the redesign of curriculum and assessment. Core competencies are sets of intellectual,

personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in

deep learning and life-long learning. As we engage students with these areas of the redesigned

curriculum, the staff at 2nd street is exploring ways to connect this with our school expectations of being

safe, respectful and responsible in a meaningful and purposeful way. By integrating the key concepts of

these competencies, we will create a simple and common language of Belief Statements of who were

‘are’ at 2nd Street.

Social Responsibility Profile:

We are a family; we care for each other, our community and our world.

Positive Personal & Cultural Identity Profile:

I value myself for who I am and appreciate others for who they are.

Personal Awareness and Responsibility Profile:

I am responsible for my health and learning.

Communication Profile:

I can express my ideas and listen to others.

Critical Thinking Profile:

I will think first and then make good decisions.

Creative Thinking Profile:

I can be creative.

By creating Belief Statements for each of the Core Competencies, we will be able to make these concepts

meaningful and manageable for students to understand and to personally assess. For further information

please visit https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/

HOLIDAY HAMPERS & DRAW Donations of gift cards and cash are appreciated. All

donors will receive a draw ticket for a chance to win

the beautiful Gingerbread Train created by Georgie

Cole. The hampers will go the community families in

need of support.

You can drop off your donation at the Community

Office or the main school office. Collections will take

place until Thursday, December 8th.

Another way to help our hamper drive is by making a

$2 donation for a draw ticket for the Gingerbread Train

and other great prizes which are on display in the

Community Office. Draw tickets are also available

each day from 2:45 – 3:15 pm on the 1st floor under the

rainbow. Thank you for supporting your community!

BREAKFAST

WITH SANTA –

Saturday,

December 3rd

COLDER WEATHER

With the colder weather upon us we urge you to ensure your child/ren are dressed

appropriately for the weather as students are expected to be outside during recess and the

lunch hour even in light rain conditions. Long sleeves, hats, gloves and warm jackets would

be best. If your child is not well enough to go outside at recess and lunch, they are not

well enough to be at school.

WINTER WEATHER – WILL THE SCHOOL BE OPEN?

All schools will remain OPEN, unless there is heavy snowfall, damage or other circumstances (eg. power

outage) that make it impossible to operate safely. The district will do its best to

communicate school or district-wide closures and bus changes or cancellations by

6:30 am. This information will be posted on the front page of the district website.

Closure information will also be provided to the media (radio and tv stations). PLEASE

NOTE THAT NO ANNOUNCMENT WILL BE MADE THAT SCHOOLS ARE OPEN.

Parents/guardians are responsible for their child's safe travel to school. Please walk

elementary children to the door of their school if you are uncertain whether the school

is open or not. If for any reason you feel that your child cannot travel safely to school then

you should notify the school that your child will be absent.

Student safety is a shared responsibility. With your cooperation and support related to winter weather

procedures, we can achieve safe conditions for all.

SPECIAL LUNCH DAYS

A reminder that our next Pizza Day is Thursday, December 15th.

SCHOOLWIDE PANCAKE BREAKFAST & PYJAMA DAY

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNITY COORDINATOR

A BIG Second Street THANK YOU to Dancin’ Stars School of the Performing Arts. We

wanted to take this opportunity to thank Sonica Gujral, owner of Dancin’ Stars, for

partnering with our school and giving our students the opportunity to participate in

quality dance programs in the after school hours. Patient and caring instructors, that

take the time to get to know the children, have had a positive impact on so many of our students! From

the bottom of our hearts, a big thank you to Sonica and her Dancin’ Stars Studio!

OH, WHAT A NIGHT! Wow! The Fireworks on Halloween night were incredible. Thanks to Shane Culver and

his hard-working crew for the great show at Second Street on Halloween. The music and fireworks were,

once again, a site to behold! What a true community event that was enjoyed by hundreds of people of all

ages. Thanks for all of the parents, Second Street staff and community members who helped set-up,

supervise, serve hot chocolate and keep us all safe. Thanks to the Burnaby Central Wildcats Interact Youth

members (all 21 of them!) for helping us out that night. You were all wonderful!

Thanks Shane and crew, for bringing the community together with this spectacular evening!

Thank you for the Guru Nanak's Birthday Celebration

Once again, the Second Street staff, students and community enjoyed the delicious food and wonderful

hospitality of the many volunteers who put on the celebration of the Guru Nanak's birthday. The food was

plentiful and everyone enjoyed it very much. We thank all of the volunteers who came to organize, cook,

set up, and clean up at this community-wide event.
