FONTANA, CA—When John Young and his son, Jon-athan Young, Jr., packed up their bowling equipment and headed to Mesa, AZ, a couple weekends ago to compete in the CBT (Competitive Bowling Tournaments) Beat the Board Doubles & Singles event that was held at Bowlero Mesa on Aug. 29-30, they had no idea what phenomenal feat one of them would achieve!

The Young family are a three-generation bowling fam-ily so bowling runs in the genes. Grandfather Young got John Young into the sport and now he is introducing his oldest of two sons, Jonathan.

They were there to compete both days and Jonathan hit the first squad full speed ahead bowling in his first-ever CBT tournament competing in the Singles event.

Contributing a 220 handicap game to his first qualify-ing squad boosted him right to the top of the standings, but, of course, there were six more qualifying squads through Sunday.

Jonathan did bowl another squad as well. This young man, who throws 10-11 lb. bowling balls, is a one-hand-ed lefty. When he put up a series of 682 (with handicap) which averages 227.33, he had to feel totally elated! Jonathan, who has only been bowling a year, was using his Brunswick Twist that Dad just got for him. And, of course, Dad, competed too.

6-YEAR-OLD YOUNGster WINS CBT SINGLES TITLE

Jonathan Young, Jr.Sunday couldn’t come

quick enough and was Jonathan so happy that his score held!! CBT’s Ramsey Basurto was also amazed and never has seen such a young competitor come out and do so well in his events! Said Basurto, “I couldn’t believe it when I heard he was only 6 years old after bowling his set.

It’s amazing to see this young man earn a CBT Champion jersey. He was kind of upset we didn’t have any in his size (lol)! Truly shows that anyone can win in a CBT bowling event!” Besides a CBT Champion jersey, Jonathan won $250 in SMART money for his win. About this feat, Jona-than shared he was, “happy, excited and accomplished to meet his goal when he bowls!”

Congratulations to Jona-than Young, Jr. on your first CBT title! Dad says he looks forward to get-ting him bowling when the centers open up although they are not located really close to one so probably in Montclair. Jonathan enjoys other sports like football, Lakers basketball, Dodger baseball and soccer and is a Mookie Betts fan! His fa-vorite PBA bowler is Jason Belmonte. Be on the look-out for more from this fine young man!

LAUGHLIN, NV. – “CALIFORNIANS CAN”. That’s my slogan for CALIFORNIA bowlers who dare to com-pete, CALIFORNIA bowlers who don’t fear competing against any man or woman, CALIFORNIA bowlers who win. These are the CALIFORNIA men and women who challenge any comers at the Laughlin Blast Senior Tourna-ments.

“CALIFORNIANS CAN” is a slogan best exempli-fied by CALIFORNIANS like Terry Lankster. He dares to compete; he doesn’t fear competing against any man or woman anywhere at anytime. And yes, Terry wins. When I watch Terry Lankster bowl I think “CALIFORNIANS CAN”.

A couple of weeks ago Terry Lankster showed “CALI-FORNIANS CAN”. Without fear or hesitation, he traveled to Laughlin, Nevada and competed against all comers. He competed against senior bowlers from Arizona, California and Nevada in the LAUGHLIN BLAST and he returned home, to the greatest state in the Union, as a Champion.

Terry Lankster returned to California’s Inland Empire as a Laughlin Blast Champion. Terry and his Doubles partner Mike Stanley won Tuesday’s Division One (174 average bowlers and above) Laughlin Blast Senior No-Tap Handicap Tournament. Terry and Mike rolled a combined score of 1727 for three games to top a field of 28 doubles teams. I competed with Corky De Maio against Terry and Mike that day and we finished with a 1301 score for 27th place. Hence, I can vouch that Terry and Mike’s 1727 was a phenomenal score. A score 400 pins higher than our score!

Terry and Mike’s winning score were the result of Ter-ry rolling the highest three game series of the week (894) with a perfect 300 game. Terry’s partner contributed an 833 series to their winning score.

It’s always fun to win. That’s why Terry Lankster ex-hibited such a large smile when I interviewed him shortly after his victory. He was having fun. That’s what is great about our sport. It’s fun to bowl. It’s fun to bowl because it’s fun to compete and it’s fun to win. Bowling provides an avenue for anyone and everyone to compete and win.

I repeat, BOWLING IS A GREAT SPORT BECAUSE IT PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO COMPETE AND WIN. IT PRO-VIDES ANYONE AND EVERYONE THE OPPORTU-NITY TO EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF VICTORY. BOWLING IS GREAT BECAUSE IT WELCOMES ANYONE AND EVERYONE AND PROVIDES ANY-ONE AND EVERYONE WITH OPPORTUNITIES NOT ALWAYS AVAILABLE ELSEWHERE.

Portions of Ritger’s early life adapted from Bakken-Young obituary.

The California Bowling Writers has adopted Operation Freedom Paws! Operation Freedom Paws nonprofit organization was founded by “California Bowler and Veteran” Mary Cortani in 2010 that has provided service dogs and training support to veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, complex PTSD, traumatic brain injury and other physical, neurological, psychological and mobility needs. According to experts, service dogs help empower people with disabilities to live quality lives. Operation Freedom Paws carefully matches cli-ents with their specially chosen four-legged com-panions, most of which come from rescue shel-ters. The partners then begin a 48-week program which trains the clients to train their own dogs. At the end of the program, they’re certified together as service dog teams. A few weeks ago, I suggested possible names for new bowling balls and asked for your input. You bowlers are either drinking too much or going stir crazy! You need to hear pins crashing or smell some rental shoes.

Here are a few names e-mailed to the news. (Some we can’t print)

TONTO, LONE RANGER, SPIDER-MAN, BAT-MAN, ZORRO, PHANTOM, all wore masks??? More...

PIT PIRATE, OPEN PLEEZE, MASKED MAR-VEL, PIN-O-TRAITOR, GUTTER GATOR, HOLY ROLLER, BELIEVER, X-ICUTER. HERO was a very popular name.

We all miss our bowling buddies. Call a friend!! It will make you both feel better!

Hi Bowlers, With so much free time, an avid bowler and bowling big broad sure misses the sounds and smells of my centers.

So, this week’s illogical question... “With all the computer’s ability, how can I compile the following facts about male league bowlers?”

What is the national average for men who bowl one league a week? What would the average for men be that bowl two leagues a week? What about three leagues a week? Is more better?

Maybe the USBC could send a questionnaire to every male bowler?

Who would care? How could the results be used? How many men actually know their average?

Speaking of averages. The local associations can’t compile a list without final sheets. Closed cen-ters are not providing final sheets. Secretaries aren’t providing final sheets. I think we are “sheet outta luck” in 2020!

Thanks to our Dean Lopez we still get what little news available. Special thanks to all our writers. Couldn’t have our “feel good” weekly without you.

Hey, Carol! Here are some more team names we can at “least”

; ) think about!

Split Happens Bowlersaurus One in a Row!

See you back at Del Rio (some day) Dick Taylor

For 28 seasons my “No-Tap Doubles League” has enjoyed the Friday competition. Lots of 300 No-Taps were rewarded with plaques and patches at seasons end.

One Friday I went to each bowler (32 of them) and asked the same questions...

“Without checking, what kind of ball are you using today?” The “looks” and “questions” surprised me.

TWO bowlers knew what make of ball they were using. The next question was “How long have you had this ball?” Average was 7 years.

The last question was “When was the last time you cleaned your ball?” I was accused of trying to build up business for the Pro Shop!!

Just because the Bowling Centers are closed, we still can talk about our game and prepare for the fu-ture. Polish your ball! New shoelaces! Exercise your bowling hand! Get the ball out of the car! Call a bowl-ing buddy and laugh about something that happened on the lanes! Record the sound of a PBA strike and play it once in a while. Thanks for reading.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper finally has re-lented and is allowing bowling centers to reopen today. Centers have been considered “non-essential” businesses in the Tar Heel State since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and have been ordered closed since March.

The Bowling Centers Association of the Carolinas and Georgia had gone to court for the right to reopen, but the governor had their efforts delayed. The Republican-major-ity state legislature had passed bills that would allow cen-ters to open, but Governor Cooper vetoed them.

Under the guidance released by the governor’s office this week, bowling centers are grouped with gyms, and will be limited to operating at 30% capacity. Museums and aquariums, meanwhile, will be allowed to operate at 50% capacity.

“We know that some businesses are closed and people are hurting,” Cooper was quoted as saying. “The way to get all businesses open is for everyone to do all they can to slow the spread of the virus.”

North Carolina and Michigan Centers Allowed to Reopen

wick shifted two-time PBA champion Andrew Anderson from Ebonite to Radical.

A three-time PBA champion, Smallwood has two ma-jors to his credit including his most recent win, the 2018 PBA Players Championship. He made a show earlier this year, finishing fifth at the PBA Indianapolis Open.

“I felt it was time for a change,” Smallwood said in a release. “I had a great run with Radical for five years, and Brunswick for the last 10. I greatly appreciate the opportu-nity that they gave me, and I wish nothing but the best for them in the future.”

Leaving Brunswick makes Smallwood a free agent at a time of uncertainly in the bowling industry during the coronavirus pandemic. Time will tell if either Storm or Motiv decide to sign the two-time Steve Nagy Sportsman-ship Award winner. “I got some feelers out there,” Small-wood said. “I guess we will see what happens.”

Anderson, meanwhile, was shifted over to the Radical brand earlier this week, though it’s more about a jersey change than anything. Anderson will still be able to throw all seven Brunswick brands but will serve as the new face for the Radical brand moving forward.

In other news this week, two-time PBA champion Thomas Larsen of Denmark made the switch from Bruns-wick’s Track brand over to Storm.

“I am super excited to join Team Storm,” Larsen said in a release. “Weber, Duke, Belmo, Tim Mack and many oth-ers have made Hall of Fame careers with Storm, so I am extremely happy to be welcomed to the team. This feels like the start of the second part of my career and I think it is going to be great!” Larsen’s wins have come in interna-tional events as he won the 2013 Abu Dhabi Open and the 2014 Kuwait International Open, both of which counted as PBA Tour titles.
