PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Happy New Year to everyone! The year started well with the Clayton’s Meeting at David & Judy’s home. It was a very enjoyable evening and well-attended by BCHAC members. Thank you to the Dewars for their hospitality. Thanks to Yvonne and her Events Committee who have some interesting activities planned for 2018; and to Ann for using her home for the Events meetings. Please find the Events Calendar in the middle of the BCHAC newsletter for further details and dates. January will be a busy month and by the time this newsletter is produced the Wonthaggi Show, Australia Day picnic, Inverloch Wooden Boat Festi-val, Power Football Club’s Sunset Cruise & meal and their Show & Shine will be over. I hope members enjoyed some of the events. February 14th will be our Valentine Day’s fish & chips night at Inverloch and the 4th March will be the 150th celebration of the landing at Rhyll and, it’s Wooden Boats Festival with our cars on show. Peter has been busy and arranged for the necessary permits for our Easter Show & Shine and also a better way for cars to access Apex Park. I am looking forward to the Club Rally in Tasmania in March and, another enjoyable year with everyone. Best Wishes to not-so-well BCHAC members; looking forward to seeing you enjoying the Club outings again soon. Regards Jack

Christmas Break Up Sunday 10th December 2017 A very enjoyable day. Michael, Sue and their staff at the Cape Tavern did a wonderful job as usual. There were 61 of us to serve with a 3 course Christmas Dinner. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal and judging by the noise level, they also enjoyed each other’s company. It was great to see several people who in the past, for various reasons, had been unable to attend the breakups managed to come this year. Hopefully they also enjoyed themselves and it will not be the last time they can attend. The raffle prizes were very gratefully re-ceived and once again, thank you to all those who donated to them. It is very pleasing to be able to make up so many prizes due to your generosity. I hope you all had a safe and happy Christmas and that celebrated the New Year. See you all next year.

GERMAN MINES IN BASS STRAIT Did you know that the first American naval casualty in the second war happened in Bass Strait? Late in 1940 a German raider laid a field of approximately 100 mines in Bass Strait with the intention of sinking Australian and New Zealand troop ships leaving for the Middle East. On the 8th November 1940 the American ship MS ‘City of Rayville’ carrying a cargo of lead from Port Pirie, SA, hit one of the mines at 7.47 pm. and sank bow first in 38 minutes. While thirty-eight ship-mates escaped into life-boats after the collision one sailor lost his life when he went back to his cabin to collect his belong-ings. The light-house keeper at Cape Otway raised the alarm and the life-boats were towed to Apollo Bay, arriving there at dawn the next morning. The loss of the MS ‘City of Rayville’ preceded the attack on Pearl Harbour by the Japanese and was the first US na-val vessel lost in the second war. Less than 24 hours previously the SS ‘Cambridge’ was sailing to Sydney when she hit one of the German mines two and half miles SE of Wilson’s Promontory. The ‘Cambridge’ sank stern first and 45 crew members escaped in 3 life-boats. They were taken to Port Welshpool by the auxiliary mine sweeper HMAS Orara. The ship’s carpenter lost his life when he returned to his cabin for his money. His crew mates tried unsuccessfully to save him. The SS Cambridge was a twin screw steel steamer built in Ger-many in 1916 and was surrendered to Britain as war reparations following WW1. This German activity right on our doorstep in 1940 caused Wonthaggi citizens to set up a plane spotter’s look-out site at the top end of McBride Avenue. In recent years a memorial honouring the local people who acted as plane spotters during WW2 has been erected in the park near the site. Barbara Moyle

Introduction to our clubs Road Trip - Hazard Identification - Risk As-sessment Worksheet. For members who have missed the meetings where the Road Trip - Hazard Iden-tification - Risk Assessment Worksheet (here on in referred to as ‘the work-sheet’). The following is an explanation as to why ‘the worksheet’ has been in-troduced by the committee. Approximately 12 months ago a simple half page Disaster Management Plan was developed and trailed by Event Coordinators with limited success. Jack Moyle attended a Federation Meeting in April this year. Federation ad-vised clubs they should prepare a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment / Management document for their club activities. Federation further advised that should a club experience an incident that required the involvement of an Insur-ance company their Insurance cover could be void in part or in full if the club could not verify the development and use of a Hazard Identification - Risk As-sessment document. Jack reported and discussed the advice from Federation at committee. Brian As-bury was nominated to prepare a draft Road Trip - Hazard Identification - Risk Assessment Worksheet. After a number of months the draft worksheet was pre-sented to committee where it was agreed to be trailed at the Mornington Penin-sula Revisited Tour. Comments were requested from participants on the tour and at the following General Meeting. Three comments were received and the worksheet amended to include those comments. Following the conclusion of the December General Meeting Jack Moyle signed the completed worksheet and is now a requirement of all Event Coordinators to use the worksheet. The worksheet is flexible in that it allows for additional information to be added for a particular event. The worksheet is required to be reviewed annually ena-bling further improvement if required. All members are invited to make comments and direct them to Brian Asbury. Next two pages contain a reduced size (sorry a little hard to read) copy of the worksheet as signed by Jack.

Clayton’s Meeting 2nd January 2018 Happy New Year. Welcome to 2018. We celebrated the begin-ning of a new year with the Clayton’s meeting. Judy and David Dewar very kindly opened their home to us all. David did an ex-cellent job getting us all parked safely and off the road. Judy as always was a considerate hostess making sure we were all com-fortable. Although the weather turned a little cold later on no one was in a hurry to go home. There was lots to eat (as usual) with plenty of different salads and luscious desserts and everyone did their own thing in regards to either barbeque or cold meats etc. We also took this opportunity to wish Jim Beal a very happy birthday and to share in his birthday cake.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT January 2018
The Club welcomes the following new members:
Mark & Leanne Pryor ‐ Drouin Phil & Julie Coleman ‐ Glen Alvie Vic & Sandy Spunner ‐ Inverloch Colin & Juanita Carter ‐ Tarwin Lower
As is usual at the beginning of a new year there is little to report because little has happened at clublevel. Our January ‘clayton’s’ meeting barbecue at David& Judy’s Lance Creek property was a great success with 53 members attending and by the time we read this newsletter Australia Day and Inverloch festivities would have been enjoyed. There has been a change to the CPS authorised signatories with Allan Prentice relinquishing his position for personal reasons. Allan has been responsible for the indexing and application processes of the scheme for some time and his services will be missed. Well done and thanks Allan. Thanks too to Brian Davidson who has volunteered his ser‐vices to the CPS and will become a VicRoads authorised ap‐plication and renewal signatory. Club Permit Scheme details may be found on the inside of the front cover of our newsletter. The next AOMC meeting is scheduled for 26 February and a report will be presented in our April newsletter.
Daryl Minter Club Registrar.
