2016 HSPVA Creative Writing Middle School Workshop (See flyer
attached.) HSPVA will once again host the Middle School Creative Writing Workshop in 2016! This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th, 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop has sold out every year that we’ve held it, which says a lot for the quality of the event and its importance to the Houston community. It’s a truly remarkable workshop, where over 200 Houston-area

Science Fair Updates Parents are welcome to go to an informative seminar about the Science Fair conducted by the Science and
Engineering Fair of Houston (http://tinyurl.com/h29tqcc) on Saturday, September 24th. If you would like your
entry fee covered, please contact Dr. Sweeney immediately ([email protected]). Space fills up.
Science Fair target dates and project deadlines are finalized by the health science teachers with the exception of
the final project. All final projects are due on 11/28 and 11/29.

Students will do a Gallery walk around the classroom to different Rock Stations. Each station will have samples
of rock for students to classify.

Lesson: Sensory Signals
Concepts
The brain receives and integrates information from all of the senses.
SCIENCE AND MATH SKILLS Using variables, measuring, modeling, problem solving and inferring
Activities
Students create a string and cup model of sensory receptors and the brain that allows them to explore how the
brain puts together information from each of the senses.
Academic Practice: Read the Cookie Crumbles chapters 6-7. Answer the questions in the Reading Link.
ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in your neuroscience binders for assignment instructions and due dates.

Students will conquer, enhance, enrich, and extend their basic & required skills and knowledge in
mathematics by taking responsibility of their own learning with the aid of technology, peer mentoring
and small group instruction.
Lab Hours: Computers and tutoring will be available Tue / Thu, 7:30-8:00 A.M. in room 129.
No late arrivals allowed. Students will be picked up from side door at 7:30 and escorted to lab.
Two other labs are also available Thursday after school.
Cycle Project: 25% of PIE completed, due Oct 30.
WEEKLY:
STAAR review topics, incomplete classwork will become homework and are due next class period.
Continuous individualized topics on math program, ALEKS. Students have approximately one hour in class
daily to work on weekly topic assignment.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE…
ITEM #1: We are beginning a “Day of the Dead” papier mache mask in Week 8. For this project we will need NEWSPAPER. Please save your newspapers or pick one up at the store in the coming week. Please send your student to school with a newspaper for Art Class by Monday, October 10, 2016 to prepare for this project. Thanks! ITEM #2: In order to make sure that everyone is properly equipped for painting, please look into purchasing your child a BRUSH SET. A basic beginner’s student set can be purchased at Michael’s for a few dollars: $3.29 to be exact or purchase wherever is most convenient. We will use these brushes when we begin our papier mache project in Week 8. Please have these available by Monday, October 10, 2016.
ITEM #3: Please have your student bring an OLD T-SHIRT to school to wear for painting projects beginning Monday, October 10, 2016. They can keep them in their locker and bring when requested to art class.

laptops, and any internet-ready technological device with them on the day they have Latin.
There are 2 vocabulary-building resources I would like to emphasize for student usage:
1. Quizlet – I have made my own sets, but if you search “Cambridge Latin Course” you will find premade
sets for each stage. I am working on creating classes in Quizlet to monitor engagement and practice.
2. Memrise – search “Cambridge Latin Course” under “courses”; I REALLY like this tool
HINT: There may be extra-credit and rewards for the students who practice using these tools!

This week in Reading w/Mr. Martinez
Students will continue exploring the theme of community through the reading of expository and informational
texts.
In the reading workshop, students will continue to build comprehension skills and examine author’s purpose
and how authors communicate their messages through the use of details, facts, graphical components and
organizational patterns.
Students will compare and contrast the stated or implied purposes (e.g., informal, influence, entertain, express)
of different authors writing on the same topic.
Communication between parents, teachers, and students is highly encouraged at BCMA.
