BCMA’s National Junior Honor Society is currently reviewing semester averages and preparing to send
out notifications to prospective members. Eligible
students will be notified on Friday, January 27th.
If your student has at least a 3.7 GPA, he/she is
eligible. Please check in with your student on the 27th
to make sure that he/she receives the invitation. If

Science Fair Update
Congratulations again to all our students for their hard work on their independent investigations and BCMAR
Science Fair participation. Houston ISD will not be holding a District Science Fair this year. Seventh and eighth
grade students have the opportunity to participate in the city Science and Engineering Fair of Houston
(https://sefhouston.org/fair-announcement). SEFH occurs at the University of Houston on February 24th (set up
posters), 25th (competition), and 26th Sunday (awards).
First – Third place individual winners and First – Second place team winners are automatically accepted provided all
registration requirements are met through Scienteer. Additional individuals and teams who placed honorable
mention – 4th place will be invited through teacher nominations. Parents and students will be notified of those
nominations on January 13th. The opportunity for parents to nominate their child will open up on Tuesday, January
17th if space is available.
A science fair meeting to prepare your student for participation will be held Tuesday January 17th at 4:15 pm in the
STEM Station at BCMA at Ryan.
After school tutorials/coaching/mentoring will be offered on Mondays, in the STEM Station for students (parents are
welcome) from 4:15 – 5:15 beginning January 30th.

NJHS Update
Students who are eligible to apply for the National Junior Honor Society were notified on January 30th
(unless they were absent). They attended an informational meeting and picked up applications on January 31st.
The applications are due to me by Monday, February 13th –no exceptions. Please check in with your student to
ensure that he/she is completing the application along with the teacher evaluation forms. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact me, Ms. Davis, via email at [email protected].

Note to Students & Parent Guardians All students will be given a copy of The
Outsiders to borrow. Students are expected to return the novel back to their teacher at the end of the unit. Failure to return book will result in a $20.00 fine. If a student loses his/her book, he/she may also replace that copy and forgo the $20.00 fine. Each student has been given a reading calendar. Students are expected to keep up with their readings, in addition to completing their daily homework (dialectical journals and study guide questions). Students will also be given a daily reading quiz over the previous night’s readings.

This Week in the Math Lab w/Ms. Kerawala Classwork this Week: TSW complete individualized topics, assignments, earn their piece of the pie, and take quizzes in www.Aleks.com program. Students have approximately an hour in class daily to work on weekly topic and time assignments. Anything not completed in class will be expected to be completed at home.
ALEKS Assignments Posted: Cycle 5 Week 2 (www.ALEKS.com)
Topic of the Week: Due to the nature of the program and built in extended deadline with multiple attempts, the program will not allow extension for assignments past the due dates. These assignments must be done in a timely manner. Student are expected to 1) work at least two hours and 2) complete at least 8 topics for this week.
Due Date for Topic 5.2 & Time 5.2 is: Sunday, Midnight 2/26/17
Upcoming Topic: The program is self-pacing, and therefore some students may need to work over two hours to master 8 topics. The assignments are as follows:

All quiz and tests are done on the ALEKS program in class. Every student is given the opportunity to look at worked examples during a quiz/test and a chance to make corrections at least once on ALL quizzes and tests during the allotted class time. This Week in Scientific Decision Making w/ Mr. Rasti & Mr. Wertz
February 20th – 24th, 2017
Monday, Feb. 20th & Tuesday, Feb,21st The students will have a Do Now that consisting of past STAAR Test questions to help prepare them for the upcoming
STAAR Test. Afterwards students will finish the journal questions for the lab “Infectious disease occurrence and
probability of getting a disease” collecting, and recording data.”
Students will analyze their probability results and make conclusions on the chances of encountering/exposure
to the Flesh-Eating strain of strep.
The student will watch the HHMI film “Making of the Fittest: Natural Selection in Humans”. While watch the film the students will fill in a informational chart over Malaria, Sickle-Cell, and the processes
of discovery of each.
Afterwards the students will answer questions over the material covered.
Students will evaluate their knowledge and skills covering the protozoan disease: Malaria via the 1st Quiz of
the 5th Six Weeks.
o Homework: students continue their research on the rare disease they may select for future PSA
projects.
Wednesday, Feb. 22nd (Half Day) The students will have a Do Now that consisting of past STAAR Test questions to help prepare them for the upcoming
STAAR Test. Afterwards the students will choose from one of nine Science related writing prompts to complete
Students will bring in the research on the rare disease that they will use for their PSA project and choose
which rare disease that they will make their PSA project over.
o Homework: students continue their research on the rare diseases they selected as future PSA projects
and bring in primary sources of their chosen disease.
Thursday, Feb. 23 & Friday, Feb 24th The students will have a Do Now that consisting of past STAAR Test questions to help prepare them for the upcoming
STAAR Test. We will continue our discussion of infectious and rare diseases by introducing Marfan Syndrome.
The students will read and take notes over the effects of Marfan Syndrome and other diseases that affect the
bodies connective tissue.
Afterwards the students will answer questions over the diseases covered.
o Homework: study the materials covered for a Test over Infectious Disease next week.

grammar practice, vocabulary practice, translation aids Technology is a daily part of our class, please allow your students to bring their cell phones, tablets, laptops, and any internet-ready technological device with them on the day they have Latin. A day that says Kahoot! is definitely a cell phone or tablet day.
Ongoing Extra-Credit: Students who volunteer to turn packet activities into Kahoot! quizzes and storyboards will
receive a 100 for a project grade if done to satisfactory!
