To all members of the Bayou Chapter past and present. It’s hard to believe that it is 2015. The new year starts with new officers and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty that is nature be it water, woods or just a walk in the park. Also, it is an opportunity to increase our membership. We can do this by attracting younger people and by contacting our past members that have for some reason decided to let their membership lapse. For those who, for reasons known only to themselves, don’t get to our monthly meetings. We miss you. Here is the list of new officers: 2015 Bayou Chapter Officers Chairman Richard W. Maxwell [email protected] 318-734-7949 Vice Chair Thomas Goleman [email protected] 318-751-6257 Secretary Cathy Joyce [email protected] 318-572-3729 Treasurer Lisa Harbour Wilson [email protected] 318-458-1055 Canoe Clinic Adam Willard [email protected] 318-423-1590 Conservation Reports ????????? I would hope that all members support these people and lend a hand whenever and wherever it is needed. Anyone who has an idea for an outing of any type or a conservation project we could help with please; let the

appropriate activity chairperson know about it. Our lives are filled with work and family but, if we don’t make time to be with friends then our lives are di-minished. The rivers, lakes and Bayous refresh us. The trails through our forests renew us and our shared adventures enrich us. So, join us as we move into the new year. May 2015 bring good health and happiness to all. Richard “Dick” W. Maxwell, Chairman 2015

Hiking the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT) over three weekends - John & Cathy Joyce Contact info: johncathyjoyce@... / 318-458-8732; 318-572-3729) First weekend: Jan 17-18. We plan on staying at Crystal Springs Campground, open all year, with water and electric, so you can bring a heater for your tent if you don t have a camper! Many of us will go up Friday afternoon to be ready for hiking Saturday morning. For more information on the campground, please see http://www.recreation.gov/camping/crystal-springs/r/campgroundBookingWindow.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=73142. We are hiking this trail from East to West, and the first weekend is the longest part. This first weekend out we ll be doing 16 1/2 miles total. We had a request to do the longer hike the first day. In the past we have done the longer hike the first day, so this is normal. *10 miles the 1st day - most of it across the top of a long ridge. We'll need to get on the trail EARLY for this hike (like 8:00 a.m!) *6 1/2 miles 2nd day. There is no way around the ten mile hike on day one; there are NO places to get off the trail sooner. Believe us, we tried! This is a three-day weekend for many; some of us will be staying over Sunday night, too. Bring plenty of layering for clothing, lots of water, lunch and snacks. We could do a pot luck dinner Saturday night - or plan on something else. The group can decide. Let us know if you plan on hiking with us! We'll keep a watch on the weather & keep you all posted. We hope to have lots of members who are just aching to go hiking this time of year - it's the BEST time to go!

Anderson Bayou Cleanup Monday, Jan. 19th 9AM - 12PM We will be picking up litter in and around the Anderson Bayou area. Canoes (and life jackets) will be availa-ble for litter collection on the water. Cleanup equipment and snacks provided. Bring your work gloves. Meet at the Zeke Drive playground at 9AM. Check out the Facebook event at www.facebook.com/BayouToBay. To help organize or lead the event, call Jon (pronounced “Yawn”) at 572-4080. “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ozark Society Board Meeting January 10, 2015

by Sandy Roerig

The Ozark Society Board met on Saturday, January 10 at Bob Ritchie’s cabin in Lakeside, AR. Dick Maxwell, Roy O’Neal and Sandy Roerig represented the Bayou Chapter. Alan Nye, the new President opened the meeting and described some of his goals for the upcoming year. He would like to use SurveyMonkey to conduct a survey of members for their ideas on the Ozark Society. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved. Treasurer Bob Ritchie gave the membership report – a total of 559 members, including 396 life members and 96 new members from last year. Bob Ritchie also gave the treasurer’s report.

Conservation reports by Bob Cross comprised the main topics of discussion for the morn-ing. The favorable ruling by the court in December 2014 was that the Small Business Admin-istration and the Farm Services Agency did not follow the proper procedures to complete envi-ronmental assessments and endangered species assessments before guaranteeing loans to the C&H hog farm. This means that if C&H defaults on the loans, the SBA and FSA cannot make those payments. Also, environmental assessments and endangered species assessments must be made within 1 year from the date of the ruling. An appeal to the ruling can still be made, how-ever.

The EarthJustice coalition made up of four organizations; the Ozark Society, the Arkansas Ca-

noe Club, the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance and the National Park Conservation Associa-tion is still working to achieve the ultimate goal of moving or shutting down the farm. The group communicates weekly and will meet in March to plan the next strategy.

There is currently a moratorium on development of medium and large livestock farms in the Buffalo River watershed area. This moratorium could be extended for 6 more months.

Bob Cross also discussed the lawsuit that has been filed against the Ozark National Forest to prevent fracking on national forest land. Another new judge has been assigned to the case (the fifth, so far). Activity has increased on this case and the Ozark Society will request a summary judgment.

Carmen Quinn, the Communications Chair, stated that the deadline to submit articles and pic-tures for the spring Pack and Paddle is February 15. She always appreciates contributions

from all members.

After a lunch break, discussion centered around upcoming events. The spring All Society meet-ing was tentatively scheduled for the weekend of March 21, to be combined with a scheduled Sixth Annual Buffalo River Classic event as described by Terry Fredrick, chair of the host Highland Chapter. The Classic event attracts about 50 participants and includes a 23 mile day hike as well as other, shorter hikes. A day-long float on the Buffalo River is a simultaneous ac-tivity. This meeting will be mainly a recreational meeting, with only a very short Board meet-ing included. An evening pot luck supper would be shared between the groups. will need to be worked out, but everyone was enthusiastic about the idea. A final schedule will be published in the Pack and Paddle.

There was considerable discussion about outings, past and future. Catherine Tolson described potential activities of the Isle Royale trip which will likely be the last week in August. She is working on permits and will announce a final date later. Laura Timby reported that the Grand Canyon raft trip is April 4-19 and is fully booked (280 miles, 7 days, $2,950 per per-son). However, it may still be possible to get on a waiting list. Six people have already re-served spots on the Colorado trip that will be July 12-18. Catherine is leading this trip and the cost is $150 per person. There are also six reservations so far for the Buffalo River trip led by Stewart Noland, June 9-13 at a cost of $175 per person. Fred Paillet will lead the backpacking trip in Alaska on August 12-20. This trip is 8 days on the Resurrection Trail with lots of side valley trips. The cost of $1,800 includes transportation and a fishing license is $80 for 2 weeks.

David Peterson, new chair of the Pulaski Chapter suggested that a time line of the C&H hog farm issue could be put together to provide a reference for all Ozark Society members. There was considerable enthusiastic discussion about this idea and Brian Thompson agreed to start putting the various pieces of information together, as a starting point.

Bob Cross nominated Ken Leonard for a trustee position on the Ozark Society Foundation Board. All approved.

Duane Woltjen discussed the Robert’s tract issue. The Robert’s tract is 64 acres on the Buffalo River partially owned by the National Park Services and partially by a family in Shreveport as a memorial to a son who died in Viet Nam. A section of the Buffalo National Trail System needs to be built through a part of this tract. However, permission is needed from the Robarts family to do this. After a lengthy discussion, it was decided that Duane would try to contact the family attorneys and try to resolve this issue, while working with Ken Smith, who will actually oversee the building of the trail.

Chapter Reports:

Bayou Chapter: Dick Maxwell discussed the successful Red River Clean-up that was held No-vember 8. Several hikes in Arkansas are planned for the winter and spring. Many members enjoyed a Christmas party.

Pulaski Chapter: David described a successful Christmas party, a January program on winter camping, planned hikes and a clean-up event on Earth Day.

Highlands Chapter. Terry stated that members are participating in weekly hikes, about 35 peo-ple for each event. The chapter enjoyed a Christmas party and there are about 185 members.

Buffalo River Chapter: Laura, reporting for Ferrel Couch, described planned hikes for chapter members.

Meeting adjourned.

"Universally terrifying, it is the most dan-gerous part of the southern route on Ever-est. The constantly shifting Khumbu Icefall is like a bunch of ice cubes continually tumbling down the icy mountain wall," said photographer Bobby Model about this image.
