  • VENUE — PURINA FARMS

For more than 80 years, Purina has been a leader in pet care and nutrition. As part of our mission to show

the world the true potential of pets, Purina has been hosting outdoor dog shows and sporting events for the

past 16 years and has become an important partner of kennel and parent breed clubs. With the opening of

the Purina Event Center, Purina Farms has become a full-service destination for cat and dog enthusiasts

who want to host, participate in or attend an indoor or outdoor show.

The Purina Event Center, an 84,000-square-foot state-of-the-art indoor facility that opened in August 2010,

can accommodate even the largest of dog and cat shows and performance events, and includes all the

amenities to make every event exceptional.

    ▪ The Great Hall is a 45,000-square-foot main exhibition space featuring custom-textured sport flooring that is padded for optimal comfort and safety. Space for 150 overflow grooming stations is

    available in the hall.

    ▪ The Gateway Hall is a 13,500-square-foot space for benching and grooming, and features easy access to the dog bathing room and handler changing rooms. It also serves as an excellent exhibition

hall for smaller shows and trials. Ample electricity accommodates more than 150 grooming

    stations.

    ▪ Lighting in both exhibition spaces is designed to approximate natural sunlight, helping provide the best showcase for dogs’ and cats’ coats.

    ▪ The fully equipped show office has a built-in sound system, as well as a phone, office equipment and both work and storage space.

    ▪ The Checkerboard Café, adjacent to the Great Hall, provides food service at all shows and banquet catering by reservation. No outside food is allowed on the property.

    ▪ The Founder’s Room on the second level offers an excellent view of all activities taking place below and can accommodate banquets, meetings and special receptions. The balcony

off the Founder’s Room also offers scenic views of the main exhibition space, and is ideal for

    recording shows.

    ▪ A large conference room is located on the second floor. ▪ The Service Center, located behind the Purina Event Center, features an exam room, meeting space, showering facilities, dog bathing tubs and an off-leash canine exercise area adjacent to the

building. There are also dog bathing tubs in the Event Center adjacent to the grooming area.

    ▪ The Purina Event Center offers complimentary agility, rally and obedience equipment as well as ring gating, tables and chairs.

    ▪ Artificial turf (90 x 110 rings) is available upon request for indoor agility trials. ▪ We provide ample parking for vehicles, as well as full-service RV spaces with 30- and 50-amp electric, water and sewer connections.

    ▪ There are multiple drop-off lanes for exhibitors and clubs to load and unload supplies and equipment. ▪ A separate loading dock is located on the west side of the building for large deliveries. ▪ Two special tribute walkways, the Walk of Champions and the Path of Honor, lead to the north and south entrances of the building.

    ▪ Wi-Fi is available inside the Purina Event Center and the adjacent RV lot.

    HOTEL POLICIES

The Host Hotels want to provide a pleasant place for all guests. They want to be successful at hosting this

dog show, and all dog shows, so that they continue to hold similar events in the future. If you have any questions,

concerns, or suggestions, please contact a member of their management team. Please say you are

with the BCSA National when making reservations. The following guidelines will be observed:

    ▪ Honor dog policies. ▪ Please clean up after your dog(s). ▪ There are pet fees at each hotel. Please see the hotel for specific rates. This fee only applies to guests that have a dog or dogs in their room. This fee is also non-refundable.

    ▪ Dogs left unattended in a guest room must be in a crate. Plastic sheeting should be placed under each crate in the guest room area.

    ▪ Hotel guests with dogs in the room need to use the special door hanger provided by the hotel. Ask for the door hanger when you check in at the front desk. This hanger will leave instructions to the

housekeeping staff. Housekeeping will not enter the room unless the door hanger is present.

    ▪ Housekeeping must be allowed to clean a guest room (with dogs) at least every two days. Guests who have special requests (i.e., a certain time of the day that the room will be vacant) can discuss

them with the housekeeping staff upon arrival.

    ▪ Owners/exhibitors shall not use hotel room towels for bathing dogs. A daily inventory for missing or damaged towels will be taken. Any necessary charges will be applied to the

HERDING HIGH SCORING CHAMPION OF RECORD

ON THE B COURSE Must be a qualifying herding score from the B course. Award will be based on the highest score of the three

days, from each of the classes. Dogs must be an AKC Champion of Record. Dogs who have completed an

AKC Started B or Intermediate B title within 60 days prior to Day 1 of herding at the Specialty must move up

to a higher class to be eligible for this award. One buckle each for Started, Intermediate, and Advanced.

    JANET LARSON VERSATILITY AWARD

The Janet Larson Versatility award recognizes the dog that exemplifies true versatility by successfully competing in herding

and at least 2 other venues. Dogs must qualify in herding and at least 2 other areas.

The award computation, new in 2017, uses the actual scores rather than just qualifying status. This should result in superior

    performances being rewarded.

The highest scoring day from each venue will still be the only day that counts for scoring. Obedience and rally have been

combined into one venue since they utilize the same skills. Agility was pared down to just Standard and Jumpers with Weaves

counting towards the score but the Premier classes were added. Herding is still the foundation with the most points available

overall, and a score in herding is required to continue in the competition throughout the week. The test classes will no longer

count towards the award, because they are pass/fail, there is no score to use in tabulation.

Conformation had the biggest change in that an evaluation was added in which dogs will participate in order to earn maximum

points from conformation. Additional points can also be earned by entering either Working Sweepstakes or the National show.

This change will allow altered dogs to earn points in conformation. It will utilize the score sheet that was developed for the

Top 20 award and dogs will be given a score based on the Border Collie standard. Two judges will score each dog and the

scores will be averaged. Judging will occur on Wednesday, Oct 31, at 5:00 or following the agility competition

We will offer three awards – Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Participants MUST submit a form with their acquired points at the end of each day. You can get your forms from Lisa Pruka.

Entry fee will be $15. You MUST be pre-registered to compete. To register, please go to the BCSA website to make

payment. This competition is open to BCSA MEMBERS ONLY.

    Registration closes October 5, 2018.

    BCSA HERDING INSTINCT EVALUATION

Thursday, November 1, 2018 SPACE IS LIMITED!!!

Have you ever wondered how your Border Collie(s) would react if he/she saw sheep and what instincts

would come alive? Here’s your chance to find out while you’re at the National. You can have him/her tested

at the 2018 BCSA Specialty on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 9 a.m. to Noon. No prior experience is necessary

for you or your dog. Pre-entry only and entries close on October 5, 2018

AKC requires your dog pass two Herding Instinct Tests to earn an AKC Herding Instinct Title. This year there

will be two instinct testers at the National so your dog could potentially earn his/her title. We guarantee you

will have an interesting and enjoyable experience, but take no responsibility for what this experience may do

    to alter your life style.

To enter the Herding Instinct Test, you must fill out an entry form, available in the Herding Premium. If you

would like to try and earn a Herding Instinct Title, you must enter your dog on two separate tests. Entries

must be received by October 5, 2018. Entry fee is $40 per test

  • AGILITY CHALLENGE

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 The BCSA will invite the Top 20 agility dogs, owned by BCSA Members in good standing, based on points

earned from the period of May 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018 to participate with a “Bye” spot in to Round 3 of the

    Agility Challenge.

The process for the Agility Challenge has changed as we have made the Round 1 and Round 2 titling classes.

    • Round 1: Premier JWW

    • Round 2: Premier Standard

    • Round 3: For Exhibition Only Hybrid

All Top 20 invited dogs are invited to run in the Round 3 run. However, to obtain a total score, you must also

run in Round 1 and Round 2.

The Top 10 dogs from Rounds 1 and 2 will advance to Round 3, with any to the Top 20 dogs entered.

You need not to have qualified to move on. We will “Rescore” the runs based off Invitational Scoring to determine

who moves on. That scoring is as follows:

    • Refusal or Run-out = 5 points

    • Wrong Course = 20 points

    • Failure (e.g. missed contact or dropped bar) = 5 points

    • Elimination (obstacle not completed or skipped) = Whistle (score of zero)

    • Course time deductions = 3-point deduction for every second over course time truncating down to whole

    numbers.

    • All obstacles must be completed or a score of zero will be assessed.

Scoring will be time + faults

Lowest overall score (all heights) will be awarded the Top Agility Invitational Border Collie. Second lowest

overall score will be awarded the Reserve Top Agility Invitational Border Collie

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN - CGC The CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine

Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and

    performance events.

All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

On January 1, 2013 Canine Good Citizen® became an official AKC title that can appear on the title records

of dogs registered or listed with AKC. Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the

suffix "CGC" after the dog's name.
