Cooper regaining ground

Tauranga’s former national Moto X champion Cody Cooper has thrown

down the gauntlet in the latest series following a surprise win

in Woodville on Sunday.While Cooper was ultimately outclassed

by last year’s winner Ben Townley of Wood-ville, who went on to win the remaining two races in the three-race event New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix, Cooper’s performance has upped the stakes for the next round in the series when the New Zealand Motocross Championships kicks off near Timaru on February 10.

Commenting on his performance – which had prompted pundits to rate his chances a lot higher – Cooper said he was thrilled with the performance of his Suzuki RM-Z450

“We were only using stock front forks today and that did cause a few problems, with the track beating me up a bit. But this was an

excellent build-up for the nationals and I am thrilled with the bike.”

Cooper, who left the champs for testing in Australia this week, says he will be “raring to go when the New Zealand Champs kick off ”,

Moto City Suzuki team manager Andrew Hardisty said it was “great working with great people” and Cooper and his MX2 class team-mate Rhys Carter were two of the best.

Hardisty, himself a multiple former national motocross champion, says it was a very tough day because of the track conditions.

“It was fantastic to see both Cody and Rhys riding so well. Cody could easily have won the day if a lapped rider hadn’t gotten in the way and fouled things up for him in race three, causing him to lose his lead.”

Carter fi nished fi fth overall in the talent-packed MX2 class, getting better as the day wore on, his best result a third placing in the last race of the day, just when the track was at its worst and dust was also making visibility diffi cult.

Tearing ahead in TRS While the Toyota Racing Series has

been “a little frustrating” for Te Puke teen Michael Scott, he says the experience is a

massive learning curve.The 18-year-old driving sensation is mid-

way through the series, having raced in Invercargill, Timaru and Taupo, and head-ing for Hampton Downs and Feilding in the coming weeks.

Having moved up to the premier single-seater TRS Championship this year, Michael is one of three Kiwis racing top international drivers and says the level of skill has been stun-ning and rather a shock.

“I’m absolutely loving it, it’s been a huge step up and a learning curve, not only with the increase in speed but also the level of competi-tion. It’s quite a challenge to try and match these guys.”

The highlight so far is last weekend’s 20 lap race in Taupo, where Michael placed tenth from 18 drivers. Travelling at about 240km on the straights, he says each round he has managed to

improve and get closer to the top.The big difference this year is the step up in

car technology, with a purpose-built mono-coque carbon fi bre chassis and sealed 1.8-litre in-line four-cylinder engines.

“(It’s been) a big learning curve to get used to not simply the speed, it’s more getting used to the aerobes and the sticky tyres which means you go a lot quicker around the corner.

Originally aiming to fi nish in the top fi ve, Michael says it’s diffi cult not performing as well as he’d hoped, but he is determined to come back next year – engines blazing.

“It’s probably been a little more frustrating, we had hoped to do a little better.

“We consider this year very much a learning year. That is the aim, to try make it back for a second season.”

After the series fi nishes in February, Michael will head to the University of Canterbury to study engineering and says it is not clear what plans will be made for the 2013 season.

“It’s great in some ways as the series fi nishes before university starts, but for the rest of the year it’s still up in the air.”

It is many years since Sideline Sid felt the nerves of the fi rst day of secondary school or the start of a new job but they were there again

on a beautiful mid-summer Western Bay morning when he set out to

test-drive a new Colorado 7 from Ebbett Tauranga.

While the old fella has written hundreds of thousands of words in the last couple of decades, the fi rst car review for Bay Driver was a whole new ball game. More accus-tomed to writing about right hooks and off drives - the call to duty to write about motor vehicles was a challenge that had Sideline Sid a little apprehensive but also looking forward to the new challenge.

First impressions, when handed the keys by Julian at Ebbett in Cameron Road, was of real size for a 2.8 litre diesel vehicle.

Built on the lines of the Colorado Ute, the new brother to the Holden Ute had several outstanding features that make it really look the part.

The 4x4 has seven full seats and has the grunt to easily tow a load of up to three tonnes. Billed as ready to take on the red dirt, black rock or white sands of New Zealand, I was interested to know if it lived up to its name.

With neither the time or the terrain to give the vehicle a real workout, we headed along the expressway to the back road to Rotorua, to see how it handles. Stopping at Pyes Pa School for a photo shoot, I came to the realisation that it was a heavyweight vehicle for a heavyweight family.

Built upon the lines of David Tua or Shane Cameron - being light on its feet but with a real punch, the Colorado 7 is a people mover with grunt. Ideally suited for a large family, the 50/50 split of the back seats provide fi ve seats and a huge boot area,

or seven seats that give an outstanding degree of com-fort to all seven passengers.

The Colorado 7 will also

appeal to the outdoors types with the ability to tow such as a big boat on an extended fi sh-ing trip. One can imagine the Colorado 7 loaded with all the necessities of a trip to far away fi shing grounds. With a tough coil spring fi ve-link live axle, high ride height and four wheel drive, this is a vehicle to get you to the back blocks and beyond in New Zealand.

A real plus for older types is the side steps, which make boarding and disembarking a breeze - shades of the vintage cars such as the Essex Eight, having running boards, which are a narrow step fi tted under the side doors. An unlikely benefi t in the early 20th century, was that gangsters used their running boards, to get better aim at police offi cers and rival gangsters.

Sitting in the driver seat, one is faced by all the bells and whistles and then some. Blue-tooth and a CD audio system with steering wheel audio controls connected to six speak-ers. A trip computer, that tells you everything you could ever want to know such as how

much fuel is remaining and the kilometres left before the vehicle runs out of diesel.

In addition to full-length air bags, two items in the back of the Colorado 7, provide extra comfort and versatility. Rear seat air conditioning provides the same comfort level in the back seat as in the front, while a 12-volt power connection in the boot gives an additional bonus

for such as camping trips. Today’s specifi cations tend to be described

in capital initials, with the vehicles brochure telling me that the Colorado 7 has ESC (Electronic Stability Control) ASB (Anti-Lock Braking System) LSD (Limited Slip Differential) DCS (Descent Control System) and HAS (Hill Start Assist).

Final impressions on reluctantly handing the keys back to Julian, is that it drives like an around town sedan, but has the size and capabilities of an off road vehicle. The Colo-rado LTZ has a RRP of $66,900 with the LT available at $62,900. Would I buy one – you betcha.

From his fi rst car – a 1954 Mark I Zephyr he owned for 13 months – he has been through a wide range of cars, only sharing the ability to travel at speed.

“I just like cars and the faster they go the better I like them,” says Graeme.

“I’ve always loved cars – I even drove the Mk 1 Zephyr as if it’s a race car much to my friends dismay.”

The two cars that share pride of place in his shed today are a 1966 Oldsmobile ‘98’ in immaculate condition and a 1999 Dodge Viper GTSACR which he has had just over a year.

“I’ve had lots of other cars with three-quarters of them being modifi ed.”

Graeme has always had a soft spot for big

classic cruisers like his Oldsmobile – having earlier owned a 1970 Pontiac Bonneville convertible and a 1966 Buick Riviera.

“They are lovely to drive, they fl oat along and you’ve got lots of room in them. I just love those old cars.

“I take it out as much as I can get the time to – we take it to the Beach Hop of course and it’s a great big car for cruising around on Sundays.”

These days you are just as likely to see Graeme in his beloved Viper, a car he admits to dreaming of having for as long as he can remember.

“The Viper is the coolest car I’ve ever had.”

Graeme says it is great to have the car he has wanted for years, but it came at the cost of having to sell his beloved ’65 Notchback Mustang, a car he had hugely modifi ed over 25 years for club racing.

“It was my wife’s instructions I had to sell the Mustang to get the Viper – so I sold it to my daughter. But it’s so modifi ed it doesn’t make a very good streetcar, so I tried to talk her out of buying it.

“It sounded amazing. It had a six-speed gear box and a nine-inch diff, but it’s ter-

rible for turning on the street.” The ACR in the Viper’s name stands for

American Club Racing, with the GTS adapted for track racing. The car boasts an eight litre V10 engine, clipped to 530horespower at 5800rpm, has a six-speed transmission and can do a standing quarter mile in 11.7 seconds at 123 miles per hour. It has a top speed in excess of 190 miles per hour.

Graeme says he absolutely loves driving the Viper, describing it as in mint condition and a great car to drive.

Self-professed petrol head Graeme Clark might be a foundation member of the Ford Muscle Club, but he is pretty open-minded

when it comes to his cars.
