The Role of Youth Development at BDFC

This framework is designed to be used as a guide by the academy coaches, club coaches, club administrators and parents to help improve the overall quality of the football soccer experience for youth members of the Balmain club. With this as the backdrop, please keep the following things in mind regarding the information included in this document:

• Each aspect of play taught from U6 and up must continually be reinforced at each successive age group and more advanced techniques are built upon the most basic ones. Regardless of the age of the player, he or she must be competent in the basic fundamentals before they can effectively implement more advanced techniques. To that end, the objectives here are meant to be descriptive of what we strive to teach at each age level and not prescriptive of what must be taught at each age level.

• We have focused almost exclusively on the technical aspects of the game here with some tactical elements coming into play as children get older. As a community club, we have identified this area as the key priority to improving the experience of our young club members.

• Finally, no matter how well developed the coach or program is, each player is responsible for his/her own development and the time they choose to spend working on their game outside of organized training will have a greater impact on their personal development than anything else.

BDFC Club Philosophy

As a club, Balmain is committed to providing opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to participate in and develop a passion for the game of football. We will endeavor to provide all of our coaches the support and training required to effectively teach the fundamental principles of the game to all players regardless of the skill level. With a particular emphasis on the junior members of the club, we will build our programs based around the 4 key components of teaching the game:

There are 4 components to teaching young players the game of soccer (football); technical, tactical, physical and psychosocial. Here is what each of these terms means as it relates your child's development.

Technical – the individual ability of a player to be competent and proficient in the basic skills required to play the game.Physical – The development of basic motor skills, coordination, flexibility, balance, perception & awareness to handle the changing physical requirements of the game. We will develop this through the activities and exercises we us in training.Psychosocial – This refers to a range of internal and external tools to help players manage their emotions and external stimuli in order to use them to his/her advantage on the field. As a club we’ll focus on developing confidence and motivation for the players which is predicated on competence of the basic technical aspects of the gameTactical – Our aim is to create clever players capable of adapting to a constantly changing environment. For us this means a focus on learning to play from the back and basic attacking principles.

BDFC Club Philosophy (cont.)

“Player development is the real result, not the final score.” Please re-read the last sentence again because it underpins everything we will attempt to do as a club. Our programs are designed to teach the fundamental principles of the game enabling members to grow with and play the game to the best of their individual ability for many years to come.

We aim to develop technically proficient players who are comfortable on the ball, confident and creative. We will encourage a possession based style of play focused on building play from the back.

How we want to teach this philosophy is built around the following 4 principles:

1. Utilizing guided discovery principles to improve the learning and retention process for players;2. Creating opportunities for every kid to succeed thus motivating individuals to build on their own successes;3. Focusing on building each player from the feet up, recognizing that without a core technical foundation the game becomes much harder and less enjoyable as players mature;4 Integrating unstructured free play opportunities where players can try and discover new things on their own.

At BDFC we strive to create a footballing environment that is both fun and challenging for players of all skill levels and serves as foundation for a lifelong passion for the game.
