Welcome to Waukee, the “Key to Good Living”! The City of Waukee has been recognized as one of the fastest growing communities within the state of Iowa. Waukee is also located within one of the fastest growing counties within the United States. Waukee upholds a small-town atmosphere focused around families and friends with convenient access to local

and regional amenities.

Together with businesses, organizations and individuals, the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting growth and prosperity in the greater Waukee area. It is with great enthusiasm that we bring you the official 2013/2014 Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce Directory and Community Guide. Much more than a membership directory, this book includes information and dates for important events in Waukee, contact phone numbers, email addresses and websites for your city government and schools as well as a map of our ever-changing community. We hope that whether you live in the area, own a local business or are reading this as a prospective resident or business owner, you find this directory to be extremely useful. If you can’t find something here, please try our website at www.waukeechamber.com or call the Chamber Office at (515) 978-7115.

Please use this directory as a guide to help you shop locally. Shopping locally can cut your drive time while supporting the local businesses that help to fund Waukee’s government and schools. The dollars that are kept here in Waukee help create more jobs, thereby strengthening our local economy. Help preserve Waukee’s one-of-a-kind businesses by shopping locally!

Our duty as a Chamber of Commerce is to serve our members, which includes not just businesses, but individuals and non-profits, too. The Chamber helps businesses market their products and services and provides a legislative voice to our membership. Each year we put on dozens of events including Annual Dinner and Silent Auction, What’s Cookin’ in Waukee, Annual Golf Outing, Cow Patty Business Bingo, ribbon cuttings for new businesses, monthly networking luncheons, breakfast before business events, business after hours events, educational panel discussions and community forums. We are active participants in town celebrations, fundraisers and school functions, and we work with the City of Waukee, the Waukee Economic Development Corporation (WEDCo), the Waukee Leadership Institute and the Greater Des Moines Partnership to support economic development and workforce development initiatives.

I will conclude by thanking our members for their support of the Chamber and the community. With your support and participation, we are able to continue our mission. It has been a privilege for me to serve as the Chamber President and work with our City leaders, Chamber members and our Chamber staff. I have seen firsthand that when we work together, we can make a difference. I hope you join us in making a difference by getting involved with the Waukee Chamber this year. We look forward to seeing you!

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:The Economic Development Committee works in cooperation with the City of Waukee, WEDCO, Waukee Chamber and others to promote economic growth in the Waukee area. This committee is organizing the first annual Waukee Economic Development Bus Tour which will highlight the City of Waukee, Parks & Recreation, Schools, Businesses, Land and Development.

“My work revolves around real estate and development, and I enjoy seeing the City of Waukee grow and evolve as a community. The Economic Development Committee’s goal

is to bring a bus tour featuring the City of Waukee and Waukee School District. The first tour will take place this year and will feature a very informative tour highlighting community information, business development and schools. Following the tour there will be a reception at Gilcrest Jewett. We invite our members and community to participate.”— Committee Chair Brandon Patterson

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS:The Government Affairs Committee serves as the legislative voice of the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce membership. This committee hosts three legislative coffees during session, stays up to date on legislative issues affecting business, participates in regional public policy meetings and events and hosts election year forums.

“Being the Government Affairs Committee Chair has a number of benefits. Meeting with and listening to our local and state representatives is truly valuable as it gives us all a perspective on what is going on currently in the community. It’s great to have open conversations with these folks and voice our opinions on certain issues. I have always had an interest in politics, and this is a great way to get involved at a local level.”— Committee Chair Matt Klein

MEMBERSHIP: The Membership Committee strives to increase membership involvement in Chamber activities and encourage businesses to join the Chamber. This committee markets the benefits of Chamber membership to non-member businesses in the Waukee area through prospect visits and membership outreach drives.

“Membership is important to the Chamber. For me it is a great opportunity to attend the networking opportunities that lead to successful business relationships.”— Committee Chair Erna Morain

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM:Waukee Chamber Ambassadors work to promote and support the role of the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce as an outreach representative. Ambassadors attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies and other Chamber and Community events and act as a host to our members at Chamber events and make them comfortable and facilitate networking amongst members.

“I like representing the Chamber and Waukee, as I consider this my hometown now since I have lived here longer than any other place in my life. As an Ambassador, we participate in the different events

of the Chamber, welcome new members, help to make them comfortable, and introduce them to other members.”— Committee Chair Terry Snyder

14

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: The Community Development Committee increases membership involvement in Chamber and community activities. This committee organizes and promotes the Chamber’s Annual Dinner, What’s Cookin’ in Waukee, Golf Outing, Cow Patty Business Bingo and Community wide events.

“I was interested in the Community Development Committee Chair position because community development is a large part of what the Chamber does. The Community Development Committee organizes all

of the events the Chamber puts on. These events are all great because they allow members to show off their business to other members of the Chamber and community.”— Committee Chair Bryan Rowland

SCHOLARSHIP: The Scholarship Committee provides a one-time annual scholarship to a graduating senior from the Waukee High School who will be attending an Iowa institution in the fall of the year following graduation. This committee focuses on increasing awareness of the scholarship and determining the recipient.

“I look forward every year to the opportunity to reward a deserving Waukee student with an academic scholarship. It is a pleasure to review the applicants and discover the talent our community has in its future citizens. Waukee should be proud of its educational system. In this small way, the Chamber can continue to support the student successes.”— Committee Chair Jerry Purdy

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Nominations are accepted in September for the WACC Board of Directors. Board Directors determine policies and set goals for the organization. Directors represent the WACC members while serving a three-year term. Monthly Board meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Waukee Chamber Board Room.

“I joined the Waukee Chamber to promote my business, what I didn’t know at the time was how much I would enjoy it! I became an Ambassador right away to get to know people. That was the best thing I could have done. I met so many great people and was able to attend so many events. By doing that, I felt a part of the Chamber and I was able to promote by business. The biggest thing to me is the friendships I have made. Now I feel comfortable referring any business in the Chamber to my friends and neighbors.” — Committee Chair and Board President Vickie Dornfeld

Welcome to Waukee Schools! The Waukee Community School District is an exciting place to be. Opportunities are numerous for the more than 8,000 students who make up the Waukee School Community. The Waukee Way

includes quality, caring teachers, dedicated staff and supportive families. It’s a great place to live and learn! Within the change that is all around us, there are two things our communities can count on: one, growth will continue into the foreseeable future and two, with that growth the commitment to each individual child remains strong. Each year, evidence of academic progress and quality instruction will be visible throughout our buildings and on our website.

We are proud of the comprehensive programming we are able to offer all students in the areas of academics, the arts and athletics. Patrons take a great deal of pride in our educational program and student achievement. More than 89 percent of our graduates go on to some form of postsecondary education. Our student body ranks high nationally on every measure of academic progress. Our faculty and staff strive constantly to provide a world-class education for our students. We are working hard to remove any ceilings on student progress and achievement, providing increasingly advanced coursework and instruction at lower and lower grade levels as our student body rises to the challenges and opportunities presented to them! Learning will ALWAYS be our number one focus at Waukee. In addition to academics, Waukee Schools boasts successful extra and co-curricular programs. Our vocal and instrumental music and related arts programs are of the highest caliber. Athletically, Waukee students compete at the Class 4A level for statewide purposes and are a member of the Iowa Division of the Central Iowa Metropolitan Conference. Whatever your child’s interests may be, Waukee Schools provides opportunities for success and growth. We continue to plan ahead. Student enrollment growth in the district has provided the opportunity for new and modern facilities. We recently finished construction on the “final” additions to Waukee High School. These additions opened in July 2012 expanding that facility by 95,000 square feet and position WHS to serve upwards of 1,800 students in the future, the culmination of a master planned facility that first opened in 1997. We finished construction and opened elementary No. 7-Woodland Hills fall of 2013. Woodland Hills is located at the intersection of Stage Coach and 95th Street in West Des Moines. This year we will begin construction on a new eighth/ninth grade facility-Timberline. Timberline will be built at the intersection of LA Grant and Ashworth in Waukee. The work is slated for a July 2015 completion date. We encourage you to be involved in the life of our schools. There are many volunteer opportunities at the building and district level. The list is long, and the ways to be involved are numerous. Enjoy the experience — be in close contact with your school. Visit often, and of course call, email, or stop at one of our offices to get information about us. Be informed, be a part of the excitement, be our partner!

A Message from the SuperintendentWaukee Community Schools

The Waukee Economic Development Corporation was founded in 2008 in response to the city’s focus on economic development and business growth. City officials and business leaders felt that the issue

of development required a renewed and focused effort in order to move the city forward. The result is a nonprofit, public-private partnership whose goal is to build a stronger, prosperous economy and growing job market.

WEDCO has three key initiatives that will support the growth of Waukee’s business community: supporting existing businesses, attracting new businesses and branding a community image.

“While Waukee is a fast growing city, we know we need more commercial business in the city to keep the tax base diversified and the city moving forward. We are trying to work with companies that are offering wages that support families. We need retail, but we need offices and services, too,” said Brian Mook, WEDCO President.

One of the organization’s top goals is to support existing businesses in Waukee and assist them with potential growth. WEDCO has made it a priority to develop a business visitation program in which board members assess company needs, market the potential benefits the City of Waukee may be able to provide and determine what the company’s priorities are in regards to doing business in Waukee.

The WEDCO staff has met with businesses throughout the last year and identified ways to help the Waukee businesses grow. For example during one visit the staff was able to identify a tax credit the company was eligible

for. This fact saved the company tens of thousands of dollars. In another example, WEDCO is trying to assist a company in reducing their trucking costs. “Anything that will make Waukee companies more competitive is great for the city,” said Executive Director Clark Smith. In addition to supporting existing businesses, WEDCO works to attract new and desirable businesses to Waukee. The organization provides vital information for developers, including information on sites that are available for retail or warehouse space. WEDCO also works to market the city and provide financial incentives information for new businesses looking to locate in Waukee. Representatives from WEDCO and the City attended the largest retail convention in the world for the second year. They walked the trade show and set up appointments with retailers to discuss the attributes of locating

Waukee Economic Development Corporation:Leading The Way For Waukee’s Economic Growth

18

in Waukee, one of which is the pending interchange that will be built on I-35/80. The new Hy-Vee store in that area has already attracted the attention of other retailers. WEDCO is currently planning additional activities that will lead to builders, developers and brokers becoming more aware of what Waukee has to offer. WEDCO has been reviewing incentive packages and trying to be creative and thoughtful about the incentives we can offer to prospective businesses. WEDCO is actively assisting the city of Waukee in getting the word out about the expansion of Alice’s Road, which could become a technology corridor. When the corridor is completed, it will have a Microsoft Data Center on the south end and Team Technology on the north end. The almost 1,700 acres that will open up will become a mix of office, residential, commercial and retail spaces. This much land will garner national attention from builders and developers interested in learning more about the western side of the metro. WEDCO is preparing to respond to these inquiries. To complete all this work requires funding. An outside firm has been hired to develop a funding plan. The City of Waukee has been a substantial financial supporter to WEDCO the last three years, along with the investments of several local businesses. In order to move to the next level, WEDCO must secure additional private investments. If you or your business is interested in helping to grow Waukee, please contact us to learn more. The City has recently started its own economic development department. WEDCO and the City have sat down and carved out what each organization

will focus on so there is no duplication. Open communication will be the key to these two organizations working together. Together, the City and WEDCO will make Waukee the place to locate a business.

To stay up to date on the happenings of WEDCO, visit www.waukeedevelopment.com. The site serves as a comprehensive directory for business leaders to learn about potential building sites, see featured property and learn about all the amenities Waukee has to offer.

WEDCO’s leaders are poised for growth and success, and they’re ready to make Waukee a leader in the metro’s business community both now and in the future.

“While Waukee is a fast growing city, we know we need

more commercial business in the city to keep the tax base

diversified and the city moving forward. We are trying to work with companies that are offering wages that support families. We need retail, but we need offices

and services, too.”— Brian Mook, WEDCO president

Yard Waste: Yard waste materials must be put into biodegradable bags or reusable containers and set at the curb. It is not necessary to purchase expensive yard waste bags at stores in Des Moines. Generic yard bags will work fine. There are no stickers for yard waste. Sticks, brush and branches must be bundled and cut to 4-foot lengths and bundled (with twine or string) with 50-pound maximum weight per bundle or if they will fit into small reusable containers they will not need to be bundled. Pick-up is on Mondays from April through the end of November. Items must be set out the night before or by 7 a.m. the day of collection.

Landfill: The City of Waukee contracts with the North Dallas Landfill to accept waste generated in our city. The landfill fee is broken down per household and charged on your utility statement as a $2 fee. All residents within the corporate city limits are charged this fee. For City or Waukee garbage customers it is included in their $16.40 monthly fee. Midwest Country Estates and some condominiums, townhome associations and apartments contract garbage collection for all their residents. They then bill the collection costs in the association dues or rent. Neither the landlord nor the development association are billed the landfill fee; therefore, the fee is not covered by the garbage charges you are paying to them.

Landfill Driving Directions: North Dallas Landfill: 2499 337th St.; Perry, IA 50220. Hours: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Phone: 436-8252. www.mwatoday.com. Follow Highway 144 (1st Street) north out of Perry. The road will curve west and then north again. As the road turns north, there is a gravel road continuing west. Take the gravel road to the first intersection and turn south (left). This road will take you directly to the landfill entrance.

Large Garbage Items: Appliances — You must contact Waste Management (299-2504) to schedule the collection of an appliance. There is a fee of $35 for each appliance. Furniture and other bulky items — You are allowed one large item per week. There is no fee for furniture pick-up. Bulky items such as boards must be cut to 4-foot lengths, with a 50-pound maximum. Carpets — Cut, rolled and tied. As a courtesy, please notify the Utility Billing Office in advance of a large item pick-up so the driver can make preparations. All items can be dropped off at the landfill for a $10 fee per item. If you have any questions, please call the Waukee Public Works office at 987-4363 or the Utility Billing office at 978-5502.

Welcome to the City of Waukee! As the fastest-growing city in Iowa, we have worked diligently to promote a strong sense of community, recruit and retain business amenities, and improve

city services to make Waukee the most desirable community in which to live, work, play, and raise a family. Located on the western edge of the Des Moines metro, Waukee provides our citizens with both the secure neighborhood feel of small-town Iowa and access to a larger metropolitan with cultural amenities and opportunities. That unique balance, along with a strategic, well-planned approach to community growth, has enticed thousands of people to call Waukee home. We have an incredibly diverse housing stock to meet your needs, from starter homes to traditional suburban neighborhoods to luxury executive homes. Waukee enjoys an excellent school system that is recognized throughout Iowa as a leader in quality education and state-of-the-art facilities. Our church community has a strong and vital presence, administering to many diverse faiths. The Waukee Parks and Recreation Department is second to none, providing a wide range of amenities and programs for children and adults alike. Our recreational trails are also second to none with connections throughout the western metropolitan area and the Raccoon River Valley Trail in the greater Dallas County area. Residents can also take advantage of the many civic and sports organizations in the community that are always looking for new and active members. Waukee’s City Council is forward-thinking and always looking for opportunities to better serve our citizens. Elected officials and City staff focus on comprehensive planning and strategic investment in our community to ensure Waukee’s current and future success. The Alice’s Road Corridor and Interchange projects, which are in various stages of planning and completion, continue to be a top priority for infrastructure and economic development. However, we continue to embrace and support our existing business community and historic Downtown Triangle. Our community has a rich past, vital present and promising future. As mayor, I know that our success as a community is dependent on the active participation of our citizens and businesses, and I thank you for your hard work and dedication in making Waukee “the Key to Good Living.” It is an honor to serve as your mayor.
