Children have learned the importance of follow-ing rules. Like the Pharisees in today's Gospel, they often bring to our attention the infractions of others. Even parents sometimes get caught off
guard by their children's observations: “Why don't you have to go to bed at 8:00?” or “But I saw you eat a cupcake before breakfast once.” Our rules for our children are not arbitrary. We establish and enforce family rules with the intention of helping our chil-dren grow to be healthy and mature adults. We foster this maturi-ty when we also initiate conversations with our children about the purposes behind family rules and teach them the essential values that rules help us observe. As you gather as a family, list some of your most important family rules. Together, try to write a single, positive statement that captures the essential value behind your family rules. In today's Gospel, we hear Jesus criticize the Phari-sees for making their rules about ritual purity equal to the com-mandments of God's Law. Read today's Gospel, Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23. When we remember the essential element behind our rules, we see that our rules help us be the good people that Jesus wants us to be. Conclude in prayer together that we may always honor God's Law in our words and deeds. Pray together today's psalm, Psalm 15.

Holy Spirit Catholic Community-Butte Montana
The kitchen table was the goal line and each child wanted to be first. It was dinnertime, they were starved and the food was hot. The all-seeing mom took a fast count of her charges and began to pray, “Bless us, O Lord …” With a shouted Amen, the little hands quickly moved toward the large pizza that had been pre-cut right before they sat down. The mom suddenly broke the feeding frenzy with a voice accustomed to breaking through wild daily rituals of her children’s precociousness. “Who didn’t wash their hands?” she bellowed. “We are a civi-lized family.” Silence suddenly filled the still air above the pizza that had quickly shrunk to half its original size. There were three children, ages 4, 7 and 10. They each looked at their hands as if seeing them for the first time in their lives. They had been in the back yard looking for worms right be-fore the dinner call. The evidence was undeniable. None had washed. Slowly they pulled back from the table and quietly marched to the sink. They were unclean. They were not ready to share in the family meal. Mom ruled. Today’s gospel re-counts a time when a group of religious leaders asked Jesus why his followers were allowed to eat without first washing their hands. Their question did not arise from health concerns, but rather from a set of traditional religious rules that they rigidly upheld. These rules were ancient. They must be fol-lowed exactly as they had been written. No variations and no exceptions. You could identify a good person by the meticu-lous manner in which they went by the book. That was their interpretation of good religion. But Jesus saw a larger picture. He thought about these religious leaders who did everything right because they sought the praise of others. But they often had self-centered, hard hearts. They spent their spiritual ener-gy mostly judging the seeming inadequacies of others. Jesus knew that they had twisted God’s intent. Jesus knew that God was, first of all, interested in the state of human hearts. In that sacred interior place God hoped to find kindness and humility and a powerful sense of justice for all. And mercy toward oth-ers as Pope Francis tirelessly teaches. Jesus was not against washing before meals. Mom was right in her concerns. But Jesus wanted us to know that we need to be more than clean on the outside. A clean and loving and forgiving heart is what God wants. That will make the pizza taste even more deli-cious.
