Be Mindful of Road Closures Over the course of a year, events and/or various construction/road repair projects may cause certain sections of City streets, parking stalls, and alleys to be temporarily closed. When these closures occur, temporary traffic control devices like barricades, signs, cones, barrels, candles, etc. are used to let the traveling public know which areas will not be available for use during the scheduled event/project. Please respect these traffic control devices as they are not only warning signs of closures, but also act as protection not only for you, but also for the event taking place and for any staff working in the area. Also, please do not move, remove, or damage these devices as they are expensive to replace. We appreciate your continued support and mindfulness of all posted notices as we all work together safely.
Not just road closures can affect our traveling public, we also need to be aware of snow and ice. Below are some reminders on the City of Prosser’s snow and ice removal procedures/routes. ICE: De-icer is applied to the streets (pre-treat) prior to an adverse weather condition (freezing rain) occurring. Gravel will be applied if deemed necessary in severe intersections. SNOW: Crews wait until there is approximately 1”–2” of accumulation to start plowing the streets. When plowing or sanding the streets, the Public Works crew generally follows this route: 1. Emergency Service Areas: Hospital Routes/Area, Fire and Police Departments 2. School Routes/Area 3. Primary Surface Streets (i.e. Wine Country Rd, Paterson Rd, Park Ave, 6th St) 4. Secondary Surface Streets (i.e. Market St, Bennett Ave, Highland Dr) 5. Areas Not Normally Covered (Painted Hills, Areas near Airport, Sister Streets)
The Prosser Police Department would like to remind citi-zens that, while it may be tempting, it is illegal to leave a vehicle running while unattended. The Department asks
that you start your car and then use the warm up time to remove snow and ice from windows and external lights. This will ensure that your fields of vision are clear and that your vehicle’s lights can be seen by other motorists, reducing the potential of accidents causing damages to person or property, as well as, elimi-nating the risk of car theft while vehicles are left unattended to warm up.
Above is a sign that was moved after being placed for an event. If you see any type of road closed barrier please do not move them as they are there for your safety.

Handwashing, we don’t think anyone would disagree about the im-portance of handwashing. It is one of the best ways to keep not only yourself but those around you from getting sick. The month of Decem-ber hosts Handwashing Awareness Week. When should you wash your hands? The CDC has published a list, none of which are surprising:
•Before, during, and after preparing food •Before eating food •Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick •Before and after treating a cut or wound •After using the toilet •After changing diapers or assisting a child who has used the toilet •After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing •After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste •After handling pet food or pet treats •After touching garbage
The list above is no surprise but do you know how to wash your hands? Here is another list:
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. 2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lath-er the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Hint: It took staff that long to sing their ABCs. 4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. 5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
The CDC says that life is better with clean hands and we tend to agree. If you would like more information on the importance of hand washing, or to find materials on how to teach these healthy habits to our kids, feel free to visit www.cdc.gov/handwashing.
