t fall convocation, I congratulated our faculty and staff for their many remarkable achievements during a year of extraordinary challenges from

the Mouse River flood. In spite of the trials and personal struggles, Minot State University continued to focus on the welfare of our students and our community. In this report, you will see how our people stepped up to help one another and work to advance our university in many excit-ing and significant ways.

MSU’s three colleges offered first-rate programs, known for their commitment to engagement, service and learning. Throughout this year, many faculty used their expertise to assist people and to conduct research to help our community understand the impact and the work necessary as a result of the flood. You will read about one of our chemists from the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Mikhail Bobylev, who led a team of students to study mold in flood-damaged homes. Jay Wahlund from our College of Business worked with two other professors to lead a student-run effort to help students affected by the flood. Johnna Westby, assistant professor in the College of Education and Health Sciences, aided a wonderful project to fulfill the late Anne Nicole Nelson’s dream to develop a ski lodge for children with physical and cognitive disabilities. These are only a few of many examples of our faculty and staff

who volunteered, wrote grants, conducted research, engaged teams of students and committed countless hours of personal time to helping others.

Our Department of Athletics took a monumental step to gain membership in the NCAA Division II and the premier Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. This

effort required countless hours of persistent work over three years. Athletics not only suc-ceeded in completing the final independent year required by the NCAA, but our coaches, student-athletes and athletic administrators also mucked out flooded homes, moved possessions and participated in fundraisers for the victims of the flood.

You will also meet our distinguished faculty-and-staff-achievement-award recipients, as well as our Vision 2013 Merit Award recipients, who were each given a $1,300 award in recognition of their selfless efforts. I must also mention the selfless efforts of readers like you, who donate to our university to

help our students complete their studies and achieve their dreams. The scholarships listed in this report would not be possible without your generosity.

I think you will agree with me that Minot State University achieved a great deal during a very special year. Be assured that your university continues to be a distinct and engaged place, one that you can be proud of.

I know I certainly am. n

Mikhail Bobyleva msU professor and his students researched post-flood mold.

Where many see lemons, Mikhail Bobylev, associate chemistry professor, makes lemonade. When others saw destruction and ruin, Bobylev seized opportunity.

Bobylev and his team of student researchers had been researching antifun-gal compounds for quite some time. After the Mouse River flood left moldy homes in its wake, Bobylev and his team moved out of the lab and into the community.

“The immediate goal of the research was to find out what kind of mold is present in the flooded homes in Minot,” Bobylev said. “The isolation and iden-tification of the most prevalent types of mold would provide important informa-tion about potential health threats and methods of treatment.”

Although many homeowners had begun the restoration process, Bobylev’s team was able to access two badly flooded properties close to campus. Inside, they discovered different colors of mold—

white, green, black and brown—growing in different places. They painstakingly collected mold samples from different colonies with cotton swabs.

Back in the lab, they isolated each sample to prevent cross contamination and sent them to a laboratory in Minne-sota for identification. The lab was able to determine that several of the mold types can be dangerous to humans and animals, particularly those with compromised immune systems.

“The next goal of the project was to use the isolated mold cultures as test organisms for the novel antifungal compounds synthesized in our lab,” Bobylev said.

One of Bobylev’s compounds ap-peared to be more efficient against the isolated mold cultures than a well-known commercial fungicide.

Bobylev’s future work includes creating and maintaining a culture collection of the molds. He plans to use the collected molds in his own research and to make them available to interested researchers nationwide.

erik andersonErik Anderson, associate professor of music and Dakota Chamber music administrator, together with music professor Jon rumney, developed the Dakota Chamber music scholars project to expand DCm’s impact.

Funded by the Great Plains Center for Community Research and Service, a Minot State University student string quartet received training in performance and presentation. These Dakota Chamber Scholars traveled to share their love of chamber music in an “informance” format: an informative,

outreach performance for young musicians in area schools.

“Along with learning to be good musicians and artists, students gain experience advocating for their art in the eyes of the public,” Anderson said. “Live music shared with passion and proficiency speaks across barriers; this is a fundamental goal of the grant project.”

DCM Scholars performed for two middle schools and 10 high schools in Devils Lake, Fargo, Minot, Billings, Mont., and Rapid City, S.D., and guided younger musicians into a deeper understanding of chamber music. The MSU students presented excerpts and led discussions to expand public school students’ musical experience. They also played at the Grand Forks Alerus Center for a string festival and performed an outreach concert in Watford City.

Since June 1996, DCM, a weeklong institute, has annually brought profes-sional musicians together with 40-50 talented and motivated students and adults for intensive performance and study. DCM and DCM Scholars are coordinated by the Minot State University Division of Music. n

Jay Wahlundsome people like to command center stage, while others prefer to remain in the wings.

Jay Wahlund, MSU accounting professor, favors the latter approach.

When he works with students, he lets them enjoy the limelight.

JoAnn Linrud, dean of the College of Business, has observed this modest leadership style for several years.

“Jay has done a lot behind the scenes,” she said. “He’s solid, steady, always there. He’s so humble and self-effacing. He will never take the credit.”

Wahlund recently advised a student project titled “Students SuppOrting Students” (SOS). A generous gift from a Minot State alumnus created programs such as this.

In 2010, Roger Looyenga donated $100,000 toward an endowment in lead-ership. He is the former chief executive officer and chairman of Auto-Owners Insurance Group, a Fortune 500 com-pany. The Mandan native graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business education from Minot State in 1969.

As part of the endowment, the College of Business established a three-year pilot program in student leadership.

COB professor Andy Bertsch lead personal and professional assessment seminars and taught a leadership course. Deanna Klein and Wahlund served as project advisers. Class members selected real-world projects to develop their lead-ership abilities.

Wahlund worked with students in the SOS project. Participants included Aaron Cummings, Ellen Fenner, Deanna Mitchell and Camila Van Dyke.

“They wanted to raise money for MSU students who were affected by the flood,” he said. “The students did so much. I was there to help.”

Words characteristic of the man— simple and unassuming.

Carla Cabarlefor eight years, Carla Cabarle, assistant professor and certified public accountant, has directed the msu volunteer income tax assistance program.

In spring 2012, 10 accounting students worked 900 hours and processed 222 tax returns; the total value of com-munity services amounted to $35,000. VITA program students practice their communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Leadership roles rotated among all students. Experiencing a supervisory role is atypical of other tax internships.

As director, Cabarle recruits students, coordinates office space, provides train-ing and communicates with the Internal Revenue Service and Minot Area Coali-tion members. She also instructs interna-tional-student tax-reporting seminars.

Cabarle co-advises the Accounting Club and serves on several campus committees. A member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, North Dakota CPA Society and Institute of Management Accountants, she orga-nized a continuing professional education seminar, sponsored by the Minot Chapter of CPAs.

In addition to teaching duties, Cabarle’s scholarly achievements included

publication of a co-authored manuscript presentation of research at a conference and submission of a comprehensive tax-return practice set for publication. n

Jaimie McMullenwhen Jaimie mcmullen won a prestigious young scholar award in Higher education in 2011, she could have chosen to sit back on her laurels. instead, it inspired her to become better.

Last summer, McMullen, assistant professor in Teacher Education and Human Performance, presented a paper at the International Association for Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy in Ireland. She spoke about promot-ing student ownership in nontraditional teacher education courses.

“The data I collected has really shaped where I’ve gone with my teaching, as far as creating ownership opportunities and engaging my students,” McMullen said.

McMullen and instructor Sara Deutsch secured a $5,000 grant from MSU’s Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning and traveled to Arizona in Novem-ber with seven education students to participate in engagement opportunities in Arizona public schools. The students implemented their newfound knowledge

during National Physical Education and Sport Week in May by teaming with three Minot schools to provide physical activity outside of class for a week.

“We created a noncompetitive, safe and supervised open gym format that allowed kids to come out and play — participation was huge. Our students were able to see that what we teach in the classroom really works,” she said.

At the National American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) convention this spring, McMullen was selected to sit on the national Teacher of the Year committee for physical education, which she describes as a “huge honor.” At the southwest district AAHPERD conference in Hawaii, she presented on “Implementing an Out-of-Class Physical Activity Program.”

Johnna WestbyJohnna westby, minot state university special education professor, is keeping the memory of ann nicole nelson alive with a unique project.

A Stanley native, Nelson died in the terrorist attack on New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

Westby, also a Stanley resident, knew Nelson well. After the young woman’s death, her parents asked the MSU profes-sor to help fulfill one of her dreams.

Wishing to merge sympathy for the disadvantaged with a passion for skiing, Nelson dreamed of building an adaptive ski lodge in her home state.

That dream materialized in Annie’s House at Bottineau Winter Park. The lodge will be accessible to children with physical and cognitive disabilities as well

as wounded warriors in North Dakota and neighboring Manitoba.

Westby, a member of the project’s executive committee, ensured that the ski lodge met guidelines under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. When project architects designed only a limited number of handicap-accessible bathrooms, she objected.

“I said, ‘If this is an adaptive ski facil-ity, why don’t we make all the bathrooms handicap accessible?’ They changed all the bathrooms. That’s cool,” Westby said.

The single-level, 12,000-square-foot lodge was built over a weekend in early September. More than 400 volunteers from around the United States took part.

The New York Says Thank You Foun-dation teamed with the Nelson family and Bottineau Winter Park to create the $1.5 million lodge.

For Westby, the ski lodge is more than a one-time building project.

Service-learning opportunities will be available to students majoring in physical education, nursing, social work and business, she said. n

It was an especially busy year for Minot State University athletics in the community, as historic flooding in Minot and northwest North Dakota pressed MSU’s student-athletes into multiple projects.

The MSU Athletic Department has been committed to providing support to Minot and the region, and 2011-12 was no different. Along with many flood-related projects, MSU student-athletes worked with various youth groups, elementary schools and area businesses.

“We feel this is an important part of the experience of being a student-athlete at Minot State,” said Minot State Athletic Director Rick Hedberg. “Plus, it fits into the NCAA Division II’s ‘Life in the Balance’ motto that we embrace. This was a difficult year because of the transition to DII athletics, and our student-athletes did a tremen-dous job of working with our community throughout the year.”

Minot state athletes busy in the community

Minot State’s involvement with local flood-fighting efforts began before the historic flood, as MSU soccer filled sandbags early in the process. During the flood fight, multiple programs pitched in at sandbagging sites, flood zones and campus locations. After the flooding

occurred, MSU student-athletes again volunteered at various cleanup projects.

The highest-profile event was Minot State’s men’s basketball program partnering with the University of North Dakota for an exhibition basketball game at the end of October. All proceeds from the game were donated to flood relief, and both programs spent an afternoon prior to the game cleaning out flooded homes in Minot.

Minot State baseball con-tinued its work with Minot’s Dream Catchers program,

culminating in the fifth-annual Day at the Dome. Dream Catchers is a group of special needs children, many wheelchair bound, organized by Michelle Bliven of Minot. Members of the MSU baseball team and the Dream Catchers played a pair of games at the MSU Dome.

MSU’s track & field and cross country programs continued their annual tradition of cleaning a portion of U.S. Highway 83. MSU has participated in the Adopt-A-Highway program since 2008. The teams spent an afternoon working on their stretch between mile markers 204 and 206, cleaning both sides of the road.

athletics clears final hurdlesMinot State University officials spent

the past four years working toward two specific goals.

Both were realized in a week’s span, as Minot State officially became a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on July 1 and a full member of the NCAA on July 12.

The two announcements were the final two steps in the university completing its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. The Athletic Department begins play in the prestigious NSIC this fall, opening with a conference-opponent doubleheader Aug. 30 with soccer (Minnesota State Moorhead) and football (Minnesota State Mankato) playing at 4 and 6 p.m., respectively.

Minot State had learned of its acceptance into the Northern Sun in January, but the membership in the

conference wasn’t official until July 1. MSU joins the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) as expansion members, bringing

the conference to 16 members in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

“The announcement of official membership to the NSIC is a big step for our institution,” said MSU Athletic Director Rick Hedberg. “This comes after several years of work to secure membership. Although we were notified in January 2011, it’s finally here, and we are excited for the future. The NSIC is one of the premier conferences in NCAA Division II.”

The university also believed it was a solid candidate for finalizing its move to NCAA Division II. MSU President David Fuller expressed relief after finally hearing the university was granted full member-ship but said he felt the university had done the work required by the NCAA.

“I wasn’t necessarily surprised by the announcement because we did our home-work and kept working on what was expected, but I was definitely relieved,” he said. “This process was immense, and my hat’s off to the Athletic Department and to Rick for taking huge steps to complete reports and do the studies that were required.”

The announcement officially completes a demanding three-year application process that, according to Fuller, started even before the university entered into the first phase in 2009. n

sePteMBer 2011n Official fall enrollment numbers showed

a 5.4 percent decrease compared to official numbers in 2010. The number reported to the North Dakota Univer-sity system was 3,657, a decrease of 209 students. This number was comparable to fall 2009 enrollment of 3,649.

n Four Minot State University alumni — Dale Elhardt, Thomas W. Fredericks, and Jerry and Judy Spitzer — received MSU Alumni Association’s Golden

Awards. Dean Frantsvog received the Young Alumnus Achievement Award.

The highest award bestowed by the MSU Alumni Association, Golden Award selections are based on out-standing service to the university or Alumni Association and distinguished leadership in the recipient’s career or community. The Young Alumnus Award requires the recipient to be between the ages of 21 to 39.

n The Gordon B. Olson Library was recognized by the Federal Depository Library Program for excellence in providing federal government document services to Minot and surrounding areas. The GBO Library is the first library in North Dakota to be so recognized.

n MSU overcame first-half nerves and a talented Colorado Mesa University team to earn a 1-0 victory, its first-ever win as a NCAA Division II provisional team in women’s soccer. The game was played at Cal State San Bernardino’s Premier Stadium.

Establishing a ScholarshipCreating a named scholarship through the minot state university foundation is one way you can assist students

and leave a legacy to minot state university. it’s also a very meaningful way to honor family and friends.

the endowment level of $5,000 is reached. The principal of the fund is invested to produce income, and an annual award is made to a student/s. The principal remains untouched, so the endowment can last into perpetuity.

n annual scholarships Annual scholarships can be established with an outright

gift of any amount. Unlike an endowed scholarship described above, an annual scholarship is not a permanent

fund and is awarded only as long you (or others) choose to contribute to the fund.

As a scholarship donor, you choose the name of the scholarship as well as the criteria. The Office of Advancement staff is available to help you create the criteria for your scholarship. Endowed and annual scholarships at Minot State are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, geographical origin, leadership potential, merit, financial need, academic achievement and/or other criteria.

Typically, a selection committee carefully reviews the scholarship applications submitted by students and selects the most deserving recipient(s) based on the donor-established criteria.

Contributors of a scholarship fund are notified annually when the scholarship recipient(s) has been selected and are informed of the name, as well as the amount of the award. Recipients often write a thank you note to the donor, and in some cases, the recipient and donor are able to meet. n

The first step in establishing a scholarship is to determine whether you would like to establish an “endowed” scholarship or an “annual” scholarship:n endowed scholarships Endowed scholarship funds are designed to be permanent

and perpetual and can be created with gifts totaling a mini-mum amount of $5,000, contributed in full at the outset or with an initial commitment that is added to over time until

alumni and friends continue to provide financial assistance through annual donations for msu students and the

university. these contributions are vital for a solid future for minot state. Cash donations, endowments, gifts of

property, bequests, annuities and trusts all are vehicles to match the dreams of our donors with the needs of our

students. gifts can be made conveniently at www.minotstateu.edu/alumni.html or by contacting the advancement

office at 701-858-4243 or 800-777-0750 ext. 4243.

REBECCA ANHORN, an MSU alumna, is an associate professor of education, who joined the Depart-ment of Special Education in 1993 and the Program of Teacher

Education in 1997. She is deeply commit-ted to student learning and demonstrates it daily in her classroom, advising and mentoring teacher education students.

DEAN FRANTSVOG, as Minot City Council president, volunteered

countless hours at the Emergency Operations Center, as the flood threat became imminent. Initially, he manned telephone hotlines to help evacuees.

During the flood, he worked with the National Guard, Red Cross, Corps of Engineers, National Weather Service, city staff and other agencies. Frantsvog

and Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman were the city’s representatives to local, regional, national and global media. He later testified at the North Dakota special legislative session and traveled to Washington, D.C., to discuss funding for flood recovery.

CAREN BARNETT has served for more than ten years as adjunct nursing

faculty, staff reg-istered nurse and Student Health Center director. At SHC, she played a crucial role in the establishment of a student health

clinic. Barnett demonstrates leadership, support and genuine concern. Last summer, she opened her home to flood refugees.

Her commitment to promoting a healthy campus community is demon-strated by her leadership of a project, which resulted in MSU achieving the CEO Cancer Gold Standard, and the development of MSU’s initial smoke-free

campus policy. She also chairs the MSU Wellness Committee.

As MSU’s webmaster since 2002, ANTON HUETHER designs, maintains and updates the more than 120 websites and plays an active role in the development of all university public-facing Web activities. Smashing Magazine recog-nized MSU’s website as one of the best college or university websites online, a result of Huether’s efforts.

Huether’s campus participation is extensive. He assists with orientation sessions and serves as MSU Staff Senate vice president and a member of State Staff Senate, Information Technology Advisory Council and Marketing, Centennial Plan-ning, Honors Advisory and Sustainability Committees. He is the primary resource for online surveys created to obtain data in support of academic, administrative and student research projects.
