A Big Write Celebration!
Amazed, I walked through the vast gardens at the country fair, looking at all the roses, poppies and more. I
explored all the nooks and crannies.
I was looking at a particular beautiful rose when I saw a foal eating pure green grass. Following it, I stum-
bled over bushes and around statues until I went through an apple orchard. I realised that I had lost my full
sense of direction. “OH NO, I’M LOST!” I yelled.
I started wringing my hands in worry until I yelled “MUM, DAD, where are you?” As I turned around a lepre-
chaun appeared in a puff of green smoke wearing a little green top hat, a little green vest, long black pants
and a belt with a gold buckle. He said, “If you beat me in a game of chess I will give you a coin to toss in
that wishing well.” I laughed at his little high voice but he pulled off his hat and he pulled out a chessboard
and pieces, and we started to play.
It was almost night when I yelled out “I WON!” He handed me a coin and I tossed it in the well. I got sucked
into a vortex and I could hear weird noises and it felt like my body was going to get ripped in half. I opened
my eyes and I was in front of the fairy floss stand looking at a huge bowl of fairy floss. As I drooled, my
mum and dad came up behind me and said, “Having a nice day?”

Oh No, We’re Lost
It was a sunny day in the village of Greenvill and most families were happy, including this one.
Mathew, Rachel and Mia were all splashing about in the pool, Rachel was on the diving board, Mia was
sitting on a pink swan float, and Mathew was swimming. “It’s time to come in for lunch,” proclaimed their
mum, so they went inside and had lunch.
They were so tired from their pool time they almost fell asleep! But despite their tiredness they asked their
mum if they could go on a walk. On the way they smelt a sweet scent that led them into the forest. By the
time they couldn’t smell it any more, they were lost! It was dark and scary, it was as if the trees were alive,
at every step it felt like the trees were closing in.
“How about we do animal calls?” said Mia.
“Great idea!” replied Rachel.
So they started making animal noises of all kinds. Deer, rabbits, birds and more. It worked, they used a wolf
to sniff their house out. As soon as they saw their house they said thank you to the animals and they ran to
their house.
Ever since that day they never went into the forest again!

It has been fabulous to have Sarah Trengove in our class
for the past 4 weeks! She has taught us many things, and
we wish her well in her future teaching career! Well done
Sarah and thank you for choosing us to complete your fi-
Term 2: Week 3
F/1/2
Maths: We have begun our
unit on Shape. We have
looked at two-dimensional
shapes so far talking about
how many sides and corners
they have. We have also
looked at three-dimensional
shapes, looking at the faces,
edges and vertices.
Reading: Our focus this
coming week is to look at
words with the same end-
ing letters and sounds.
When reading a word, we
use the sounds at the
ending of the word to
help us read fluently.
Writing: This week we are continuing to write Narra-
tive texts. We have no Big Write this week due to
NAPLAN.
We structure our Narratives as follows:
Title: This is often chosen after we have developed the
story.
Orientation: This is where we introduce the characters
and the setting of the story.
Problem: This is where our story is told, something hap-
pens with the characters, often a problem that needs
solving.
Resolution: This is the part of the story where the prob-
lem is solved.
Conclusion: Although not required, this is where you
might explain a moral of the story.

On Friday, Sarah, Tim, Soraya and myself travelled to Bacchus Marsh PS to have a session with staff
from other schools around the topic of literacy. We have come back with more great ideas for
teaching and learning, and further developing our literacy block.
Please make sure that your children are coming to school with a jumper, it is starting to cool down!
Grade 3/4 Weekly News
Term 2, Week 5
It’s NAPLAN Week!
Here are some tips on how to help your child through test-
ing time:
Make sure your child gets enough sleep. Most chil-
dren need between 9—11 hours a night.
Provide your child with a nutritious and filling break-
fast. Try to avoid high sugar cereals which can make
children hyper and unfocused.
Make sure your child arrives to school on time.
In Mathematics we are
learning about fractions.
We will be able to explain
what a fraction is and how
to make and compare dif-
ferent sized fractions.
This week in writing we are learn-
ing to create and save documents
on our computers so we can pub-
lish our work! We will also be
learning how to stay safe online
and be a respectful digital citizen
HELP! Over the next
few weeks we will need
your help for Inquiry.
We have some ideas on
what we are hoping to
achieve in our garden,
but we need you to
come and help us re-
move some plants. If
you think you might be
able to help please let
us know!
In Reading this week we are continuing to learn how to look for
context clues to help us understand new words.
What’s happening in grade 5/6?...
Have a great week everyone!

On Wednesday during week 3, the grade 6 stu-
dents attended the GRIP leadership conference
at Federation University in Mount Helen. It was
a very insightful experience for the students and
I think they all took a lot out of the day! The pre-
senters gave the students plenty of information
in regards to becoming a successful leader and
also gave them some strategies that they can
use at school to put their leadership skills on dis-
play.
As it is now Term 2, school reports are not far away
so over the next few week students will be undertak-
ing a number of mandatory tests in both literacy and
maths. Also this week, grade 5 students will be com-
pleting NAPLAN. The NAPLAN tests run over three
days and the students will sit four tests including;
writing, language conventions, reading and numera-
cy.

“Understanding politics and how democracy works helps students become
active citizens in the future.”
We have been learning about Federation of Australia. In 1901 the 6 separate British Colonies joined to become one nation. They needed to decide on a set of rules called a Constitution, which helped govern this new nation called The Commonwealth of Australia.
