A Healthy Business Environment in our StateMeans Opportunities for Ohioans
One of my priorities as yourState Senator is to foster anenvironment in which our business communities canthrive, from the world head-quarters of major companiesto our local small businesses, which are the backbone ofOhioʼs economy. These jobcreators provide opportunitiesfor Ohioans across the state. We have also worked hard toreduce taxes and excessiveregulations that can often be a barrier to that growth, and I wanted to share a fewupdates as it relates to theways Ohio is modernizing
its regulatory and tax structures, resulting in savings for bothOhioʼs employers and taxpayers.BWC Rate ReductionThe Ohio Bureau of Workersʼ Compensation (BWC) recentlyannounced that an average rate reduction of 12% has been recommended for private employers starting this summer.Several factors allowed for this rate reduction, including slowermedical inflation growth, safer workplaces, and a nearly 18% decrease in claims filed in 2017, according to the BWC. Thebureau expects this change to save employers $163.5 million on this next yearʼs premiums.
Municipality Tax Filing OptionsBusinesses now have the option to file taxes centrally and pay municipal taxes through the Ohio Business Gateway. Ohiobusinesses that file quarterly and annual returns in multiple citiesor villages can use centralized collection to their advantage toreduce administrative burdens.According to Ohio Tax Commissioner Joe Testa, this changecould save businesses across the state a combined total of $800million annually. Businesses that file in multiple cities will see alarger savings, enabling the business community to reinvest itssaved funds. More information can be found at tax.ohio.gov.New State Income Tax StructureFebruary kicked off Ohioʼs tax season, and the window to filestate income tax returns is now open. It is expected that morethan 5 million Ohioans will file their tax returns before the April 17deadline, and my colleagues and I remain committed to helpingOhioans keep more of their hard-earned money.A new bracket structure determined as a result of changes madein the biennial budget did away with payments for low-incomeearners, meaning that individuals who earned less than $10,650in 2017 will not have to pay the state income tax. The new lowestbracket will pay a rate of 1.98% and top earners will pay 4.997%.In order to receive refunds sooner, the Ohio Department ofTaxation encourages Ohioans to file online. As always, I am eager to hear your ideas about how to better serve Stark County. Please do not hesitate to contact me by calling 614.466.0626, by emailing [email protected], or by writing me at 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
