Betty Finsted, resident at the Lighthouse of Superior, has won the Fan Favorite Grand Prize of the ALFA Senior Living Art Showcase, receiving over 570 ‘likes’ on Facebook. The art competition, celebrating the arts in senior living communities, drew more than 200 entries; winning artwork was on display at the recent ALFA national conference. The original

works became the property of ALFA, and were subsequently auctioned off at the conference. Todd Novaczyk, CEO of New Perspective Senior Living/Lighthouse Communities made the winning bid on Betty’s artwork, enabling him to gift the piece back to Betty and her family at a recent gathering in Superior.

CEO OF NEW PERSPECTIVE SENIOR LIVING ON NATIONAL BOARD

Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) recently announced the election of Todd Novaczyk, CEO and Founder of New Perspective Senior Living, to the ALFA Board of Directors. Richard Grimes, President and CEO of ALFA, identified Todd as an unbending champion for “… the resident centered philosophy of senior living.”

Congratulations, Todd!

LIGHTHOUSE OF SUPERIOR RESIDENT WINS NATIONAL ART AWARD

Kathy Hamilton, resident of the Lighthouse of Waconia, was also honored in the ALFA Art Showcase. Kathy was a finalist for her entry, ‘Red Daisy’, which was selected for its artistic embodiment of the theme, carpe diem. (Seize the day)

Most people know that there is no ‘Betty’ selling Betty Crocker Cake Mix, no ‘Aunt Jemima’ flipping pancakes and no ‘Mrs. Butterworth’ pouring syrup. But Betty Berkeley, the loved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother of the family that founded Lighthouse Communities, was a real person—and she had Alzheimer’s. Everything the family learned in the years they cared for Betty, they transferred to the founding and operation of the Lighthouse Communities. And they are still learning, even as they grow.

Family businesses are special. They seem to matter so much more to the owners, because, well, their name is involved. It’s personal. And it’s good to know that New Perspective Senior Living and all their Lighthouse Communities exist because of one very real—and very loving—lady.

Lighthouse of Waconia recently completed an expansion that has greatly increased the array of services and amenities available to its residents. The beautiful addition includes the Breakwater Bistro where residents enjoy Caribou coffee as well as fruit smoothies and a delightful array of tasty and nutritious food items. Also added in the project: a warm water therapy pool, a 3rd floor gathering room with Rusty Anchor Pub and a Wellness Center where a resident team from Odom Health

and Wellness assists residents with balance, strength and rehab therapy. From the beautiful screened in porch, overlooking the Carver county fairgrounds, to the attractive outdoor fire pit, the addition encourages the welcoming of friends and family to its hospitable and lovely new spaces. New Perspective Senior Living & Lighthouse Communities is delighted to announce one of the mid-west’s first programs specifically designed to help seniors resist memory loss: Vivid Living. Currently introduced at the Lighthouse of Waconia, Minnesota, the program is anchored by a full-time Life Engagement Coach who will encourage res-idents to be actively involved in the four areas that, combined, have the potential to help resist memo-ry loss: Mental Exercise, Physical Exercise, Nutri-tion, and Social/Spiritual interaction.

According to Dr. Ming Chen, as reported in the November 2011 Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, most memory loss can be explained by “…ad-vanced aging plus risk factors…we must support the elderly in healthy lifestyles. (Memory loss) is, by and large, a lifestyle disease.”

The good news is that there are things that we can do to improve health in all the areas that affect the brain—and memory. And we can have fun while we’re at it!

Residents enrolled in the Vivid Living program, and their families, will receive a copy of The Alz-heimer’s Prevention Program—Keeping Your Brain Healthy for the Rest of Your Life by Dr. Gary Small, Director of the UCLA Longevity Center. The book is an informative and enjoyable explana-tion of the lifestyle choices that can help pre-vent memory loss, and is part of the supporting library of research and documents used to craft the Vivid Living program. For more informa-tion on Vivid Living, call: 952-442-1261 or email [email protected]

Food, glorious food! We are blessed to live in a time when our food choices are abundant—and relatively inexpensive. Which only makes the fact that so many Westerners are actually nutrient de-ficient even more surprising!

Some deficiencies can even cause memory loss, as is the case with B-12. In fact, according to the Linus Pauling Institute, 15% of those over the age of 60 are deficient in B-12. Among the elderly the number can be even higher, as stomach and intes-tinal problems and some medications can interfere with the absorption of B-12.

Happily, a good source of B-12 is also one of the least expensive-eggs! Eggs are a good source of the entire B complex, as well as Vitamins A & D, choline, selenium, lutein, Omega 3, protein and antioxidants. Almost all the good stuff is in the yolk. (Recent research has shown that eggs don’t af-fect cholesterol as much as they once thought. What little cholesterol is in the yolk is almost completely ab-sorbed by the body; very little remains in the blood stream. Eggs from ‘pastured chickens’—the kind that eat bugs as well as seeds—have less cholesterol and even more choline than regular eggs.

They also have the best kind of omega 3 fatty acid for brain health.) Eggs have pride of place in the senior diet. B12 protects against inflammation and heart disease, while choline and B12 improve memory and brain function. Selenium aids the immune system, and lutein helps to keep skin soft and hydrated—an important plus for seniors. And lutein—along with other anti-oxidants in eggs—can also aid in preventing macular degeneration.

So go ahead! Have a spinach omelet with a little avocado and a bit of aged cheese. Your brain will thank you!

The Four Keys to Vivid Living

Mental Exercise Keeping your mind active increases self-confidence, improves memory function and helps you to cope with stress.

Physical Exercise Staying physically active - at whatever level – reduces falls, improves circulation and mental alertness.

Nutritional The right diet can reduce inflammation, improve digestion, increase nutrient absorption in the brain, help you sleep better and add to your sense of well-being.

Social/Spiritual Daily ongoing interaction in a community setting increases neural activity, reduces stress, improves appetite and mood.

(In more ways than one!)
