RANDOMONIUM

NIFTY TUFF & BITCHEN (8611)

This is actually a Frank Zappa bootleg that was released in 1988 as part of the 10-LP boxed set entitled MYSTERY BOX. This is the only place you can find this album. What Lennon fans will find most interesting on this record is the original full-length version of Well (Baby Please Don't Go) that John and Yoko performed live with Zappa and The Mothers on June 6, 1971. An edited version of the song can be found on the LIVE JAM album that was included with Lennon's 1972 release of SOME TIME IN NEW YORK CITY on Apple Records. The edited version was 4:50 while this bootlegged version is the full 7:47. It is from a fair audience tape. In 1992 Frank Zappa released PSYCHOTIC PLAYGROUND that contained a longer version of Well (Baby Please Don't Go) and remixes of Scumbag, Jamrag, and Au. Also included were two previously unreleased songs, Say Please and Aawk. You may also want to search out THE FILLMORE TAPES (Master of Orange) - a 2CD set from 1997 that contains three different mixes of the Lennon & Zappa live material. There is the 'no editing version direct from mixing board,' 'the Frank Zappa mix,' and the 'original Lennon mix.'

Lennon recorded these tracks in his hotel room at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City in September 1971. The songs were for the film soundtrack to 'Clock' which was eventually screened at Yoko's art exhibit on October 9th in Syracuse, New York. The songs are mostly of John accompanying himself on guitar. Occasionally Yoko joins in and we hear the phone calls that occasionally interrupt the proceedings. These songs have all been booted previously - mostly on the LOST LENNON TAPES - though some here are a bit longer at the beginnings and the ends. Also recorded but not on this tape were Not Fade Away, Send Me Some Loyin' and possibly JJ (aka Angela). A nice historical artifact for Lennon collectors.

Plus this is far from complete as it is missing tracks that also appeared on the 2-LP set YOU SHOULD'VE BEEN THERE. The bootleggers could easily have added the missing songs since this disc only clocks in at about 55 minutes. Avoid this disc and buy the vinyl pieces. S: Studio Oct. '74. C: BCD.

Pegboy (a subsidiary of Vigotone) did an excellent job with this release. The selection of material is outstanding and the packaging and liner notes are very well done. Included are the original demos used by the 'Threetles' for the new ANTHOLOGY albums, Now And Then which had been considered for ANTHOLOGY 3 but was ultimately determined not up to the standards required, three previously unreleased songs (India, Across The River, and Illusions), plus upgrades in several of the other tracks. Note that Illusions is probably the same as Not For Love Or Money. This disc presents an intelligent overview of some of the best Lennon Dakota demos and is certainly a 'must have' for Lennon fans.

R: Tracks 1-8 Vg. Tracks 9-14 G. C: Dec. 70:00. Picture disc with 4-page insert. This is a fair collection of demos, but not an essential piece. Also from 1996 was a CD titled ALTERNATES OF FREE AS A BIRD (FAB 164) that contained alternate Lennon takes of Free As A Bird and Real Love, as well as studio outtakes from the DOUBLE FANTASY sessions of 1980. Nothing on that disc was new.

CD1 is an upgrade of THE ALTERNATE ALBUM previously released. CD2 outtakes from tape source. CD3 tracks 1-8 sessions. Tracks 9-15 demos. Tracks 16-18 overdub session. An excellent package that comes in a nice color box with a 34-page booklet included. The booklet has excellent liner notes and includes a reprint of a Lennon interview which is one of his best. There are also session notes that help us to better appreciate the music. This is a great example of what a bootleg can be if the right people are producing it. Highly recommended. This set, however, is not complete as an alternate take How? (from LLT 14) and the King Curtis rehearsal of It's So Hard (from LLT 24) have not been included. Still, it's close enough for most of us.

Recorded live in a Syracuse, NY hotel room Oct. 9 '71. John's 31st birthday party with John, Yoko, Ringo, Klaus Voorman, Phil Spector & Allen Ginsburg. An interesting and very rare piece (U.S. Customs seized most of the discs before reaching stores). Collectors get to hear an eclectic assortment of tunes sung (occasionally drunkenly) by John and friends to mark the occasion of his 31st birthday. This tape had been edited so there is probably more of this hiding in someone's attic. Re released as JOHN LENNON'S 31ST BIRTHDAY PARTY. C: Deluxe drawing cover. Orange type.

This is the first vinyl disc in a long series of bootlegs from BAG Records taken from the radio series "The Lost Lennon Tapes' which ran from 1988 to 1992. Yoko Ono personally provided the tapes for the programs that included rare outtakes, home demos, studio rehearsals, alternate mixes and interviews. This unprecedented musical series was the greatest present Yoko could have given to the fans of John Lennon and his music. The show was not without its faults; however, the many rare artifacts aired on the shows more than made up for the glitches and moments of tedium. The bootlegs in this series generally had good liner notes and featured color covers of John Lennon. Most came on colored vinyl. Compact disc compilations soon followed.
