Welcome to the Beaulieu River & Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour

Peaceful and sheltered, the Beaulieu River offers tranquillity and picturesque displays of natural beauty. Its undeveloped banks play host to an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, where woodland gives way to tidal saltmarsh.

Marking the south eastern edge of the Beaulieu Estate, the river is one of the few privately owned estuaries in the world. Four centuries of custodianship by the forebears of Lord Montagu have ensured the number of moorings has been carefully controlled.

My yacht Constance spends her winters on a pontoon at the bottom of the old village street at Buckler’s Hard. The family move aboard on Christmas Eve with the bogie stove roaring and the oil lamps burning brightly. Before turning in we hang our seaboot stockings by the fireplace in the corner of the saloon, then we settle down as the last of the ebb gurgles past the hull, waiting for the flood to bring daylight and Christmas morning. After a strapping breakfast, we walk up to the tiny chapel for Holy Communion, then it’s Christmas dinner, sleep it off and, weather permitting, set sail on Boxing Day for a mini-cruise. By New Year’s Eve we’re back on the berth for a serious party with whoever pitches up at the marina. We meet old friends who’ve sailed round for the fireworks put on by the Master Builder’s House Hotel, and we make new pals every year. That’s Beaulieu.

Spring sees us up in the yard fitting out. We do most of our own work, but there’s good backup from Agamemnon if we need it. As the days lengthen beyond Easter, Tony and his mates launch us off and we motor up-river to our mooring deep in

the woods, astonished every time at how well the boat moves with fresh antifouling. After all my years of sailing I should know what to expect, but the Spring refit always leaves Constance with a lightness of touch that never ceases to delight me. The oyster catchers seem to wake up as evening falls and the lonely call of an occasional curlew injects magic into the night. Cracking a bottle of malt in the cockpit as the spring-tide moon sails overhead and the flood swells to a standstill, the river looks so wide that it’s like being in a lake.

By June, the oaks are in full leaf, the gales of the Equinox have passed and we’re thinking about our summer cruising. Working the Solent from Beaulieu is great fun. It’s all about the tides. With 7 feet draught, I can cross the bar safely 2 hours either side of low water, and by

Cruising as I do from the Beaulieu River, it feels as though the rhythm of my life is measured by the waterway’s shifting seasons. As they roll round year after year, each one reminds me how fortunate I am to sail the Solent from so lovely a place.

Beaulieu, a River for all Seasons

using the strange anomaly of the young flood stand I can get down to the entrance without having to punch any stream. Once outside, I’ve a couple of hours-worth of east-going tide if Bembridge, Portsmouth or the Hamble call. Otherwise, I can slip out an hour before high water and let God’s own escalator carry me all the way to Weymouth on a single tide.

The Solent is crowded in summer, but Andy, Paul, Dave and the lads always find room for my chums if they come calling. Once autumn starts to close in, however, the boats thin out, the swallows head south and the world is ours once more. Autumn is wonderful on the river. As the trees turn to gold and the brickwork of the old village picks up the last light of day, I wait for the first signs of Orion to

rise above the trees southeast of my mooring. When he’s standing properly upright and his great dog, Sirius, brightest and best of all the stars, follows him faithfully over the bare branches, I know that winter’s coming round once more. I’m a year older, perhaps a little wiser, and Constance shifts berth down to the village again on top of the tide as the river runs quietly on.

Beaulieu Village contains a variety of unique shops, including a delicatessen, an art gallery, tea rooms, a garden centre, hairdresser and New Forest Activities Centre.

The 2¼ mile footpath between Buckler’s Hard and Beaulieu passes through the heart of the Beaulieu Estate and forms part of the Solent Way.

The gradual transition from woodland through tidal river-edge grassland into saltmarsh is rare in England and supports a wide range of plant and bird species, particularly wintering waders and wildfowl.

1 Curtle Meadows It was here that scenes for the film A Man for All Seasons were shot in 1966, as the unspoilt river looked as the Thames might have done in the 16th century.

2 Bailey’s Hard The tall red brick chimney is that of the old estate brickworks which drew on the local deposits of clay. Built in 1790, it last produced bricks in 1935 and is now a private residence. It was here that Salisbury, the first naval vessel to be built on the river, was completed in 1698.

3 Riverside Walk This alternative route gives closer views over the river, all of which is a designated National Nature Reserve. The flat area you see is known as a ‘salting’. Grass species such as Spartina have helped to stabilise the mud banks over time. The path passes some small creeks notable for plumed reeds, especially the Yellow Flag Iris in summer. Also look for Sea Lavender, Cord Grass and Sea Purslane.

4 Burnt Oak Copse The trees here are predominantly Oak dating from the early 19th century. Later these were supplemented by Wild Service, Hazel, Scots Pine and Beech with Common Privet, Butcher’s Broom, Holly and Hawthorn, providing shelter and food for game birds. Note the stunted tree growth at the river’s edge, caused by poor drainage and the salt water from the river.

5 Keeping Marsh An open expanse of various salt tolerant plants. This mud bank is the holding area for dredgings from the river but is quickly being colonised by indigenous plant and animal life, notably Shellduck, Canada Geese, Mallard, Oystercatchers, Redshank and Curlew.

6 Agamemnon Boatyard Hub of boating activity on the river of today.

7 Duke’s Bath Cottage This small thatched cottage was built by George, Duke of Montagu, c1760 for his son who suffered from arthritis. Salt water was considered beneficial for sufferers of arthritis so a pond in the garden was filled with river water, in which people could bathe.

4 Gins This was where the monks of Beaulieu Abbey kept their fishing boats and trading ships. It was a convenient place to load and unload without having to navigate the narrower channel upstream. The name ‘Gins’ is thought to derive from ‘ingenium’, a lifting or winding mechanism used to move the load. Today, Gins is a base for the Royal Southampton Yacht Club. An oil pipeline from Wytch Farm near Poole to Fawley Oil Refinery passes under the river at this point.

5 Sea Banks The land behind these banks was reclaimed in the 18th century and used for salt production. Salt was a highly prized commodity and Salt Officers were based in Buckler’s Hard to check that the quantity of salt produced tallied with the amount of tax paid. 200 years later, the banks remain intact, but they do not hold out the highest tides, and the meadows behind are periodically flooded. This provides waterfowl, particularly Brent Geese and Wigeon, with feeding areas in autumn and winter.

The lower reaches of the Beaulieu River are best seen from the water as they are not served by a footpath.

1 Gilbury Pier connecting to the Exbury Estate.

2 Mulberry Dock This is the site of the old oyster beds created in

the 1870s. During the Second World War, an experimental floating dock was built here,

together with components for the Mulberry Harbour, used in the D-Day landings. Today, oysters are again being bred on the river, where the water is pure enough for a licence to be granted.

3 Fiddler’s Reach In the 18th century, this was an

anchoring point for the hulls of newly launched ships en route

for Portsmouth. The grass that covers the mudflats

along the river is called Spartina Townsendii. This first appeared on the river in the 1870s to help bind the mud flats, thus reducing erosion. A second variety, Spartina Anglicana, was introduced in 1898.

9 Millennium Beacon This miniature lighthouse serves as a day mark and contains a sectored light for guiding boats into the river at night. Its construction was kindly funded by many of the yachtsmen who use these waters.

The lands bordering the river contain an exceptional variety of habitats which support an equally varied assemblage of wildlife. To protect important colonies of nesting seabirds, Gull Island and Warren Shore are closed to the public; however, access to other parts of the Reserve is possible by permit, issued by the Beaulieu Estate Office.

6 Needs Ore Coastguard Cottages Built in the 1860s for the Coastguard, who were at the forefront of the fight against smuggling, as well as defence and rescue. Officers were moved around from station to station to prevent them becoming established in the local community and susceptible to bribery and collusion. The Needs Ore Station closed in 1922 but the cottages continue to be occupied by tenants of the estate.

7 Needs Ore Point This was where Charles Bull created his ‘Bull’s Run’ in 1726-27 as a shortcut into the river from the Solent. It was closed by a Special Act of Parliament in 1986 to protect Gull Island from erosion. Needs Ore is the base of the Beaulieu River Sailing Club whose dinghy races take place in this part of the river.

8 Gull Island This is actually a spit and owes its name to the Black-Headed Gulls which used to nest here.

They have been studying under the tutorship of newly appointed Shipwright Michael Kennedy – who is probably Buckler’s Hard’s first resident Shipwright for over 150 years.

Meanwhile planning for the first boat-building project for students here continues, with construction set to commence in spring. The inaugural project is likely to reflect the historical origins of the village; being based on an 18th or early 19th century craft of between 30 to 40 feet.

In the meantime, the students have been working on building up the ship building infrastructure. The image (right) shows them hand-making a large capstan from one big piece of Beaulieu Oak. A saw-pit, forge and wood storage yard are also to be added to the building in due course.

The whole project is being overseen by an impressive line-up of experts, including; Martyn Heighton (Director of National Historic Ships), Nick Hewitt

(Naval Historian, The National Museum of the Royal Navy), Jon Adams (Professor of Maritime Archaeology Southampton University), along with author and broadcaster Tom Cunliffe, and naval architects Theo Rye and Damian Byrne among others.

Step through the doors of a worker’s cottage as you go back in time to the 18th century to find out about the home life of the villagers and their families in historic cottage displays. One building, once the village school, is now a chapel which still holds regular services. Recent excavations of its cellar have suggested that the building may have been used by smugglers.

The Captain’s Cabin Tearooms, an ideal location for a cream tea, offers a wide range of refreshments, all day snacks and light lunches.

Originally named ‘Montagu Town’ by John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, Buckler’s Hard developed into a hive of shipbuilding activity in the late 1700s. With New Forest oak on the doorstep, it was ideally situated for such a task. The cottages that line the unusually wide street – where logs and planks were once piled - housed tradesmen and labourers.

Shipbuilding here went into decline shortly after the Napoleonic wars, but the village has remained unspoilt by the passage of time. In the Maritime Museum you will discover the fascinating story of the village, its residents and the ships they built, including Nelson’s favourite warship HMS Agamemnon. Listen in to conversations between villagers of the past in the 18th century New Inn and follow the stories of the 19th and 20th century residents in an exhibition about village life.

Buckler’s Hard Village

At the heart of the Beaulieu River is Buckler’s Hard, an 18th century village where ships were once built for Nelson’s navy.

Bird Life & The Beaulieu River

The river and its environs form part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which offers habitat for many resident and migrant wildfowl and waders – some 200 species in all.

Large flocks of dark-bellied brent geese arrive in the autumn from Northern Russia to join the feral Canada geese. Amongst them, scarcer geese such as the black brant from North America and the red-breasted goose from North Eastern Russia have been found.

Waders, including common redshank, oystercatcher and curlew are easy to see on the banks of the river. Winter flocks of lapwing and golden plover populate the fields, and black-tailed godwits congregate along the shore. On the brackish and fresh water pools, a few greenshanks and spotted redshank from Fenno-Scandinavia have become regular, with some even choosing to winter here.

In the spring, many of the winter visitors return to Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia to breed. However, good numbers of the lapwing stay to nest, performing their twisting, tumbling displays over the fields alongside the river. In recent years a breeding colony of avocets has established and the colony has become one of the largest in Southern England.

Little egrets and grey herons are common and small flocks of spoonbills are frequent visitors on passage in spring and autumn. Always present, but harder to spot, kingfishers perch quietly on posts or boats. The dead trees scattered along the lower parts of the estuary are

When on the Beaulieu River, it is difficult to imagine that one is in the heavily populated South of England.

worth checking in August and September, because one or two ospreys often stop off on migration. They roost in the trees and then float over the river, searching for grey mullet, sea trout or flounder to catch. The ospreys move between wintering sites in West Africa and nest sites in Scotland, but it is hoped that they will soon return to breed here beside the Beaulieu River.

Kestrel, sparrowhawk and buzzard are the common resident raptors and, in recent years peregrines have become well established. Goshawk can sometimes also be seen over the woodlands, whilst in winter the fast and diminutive merlin hunts the creaks for small waders such as dunlin and ringed plover, or over the grassland, looking for pipits and skylarks. A feature of recent winters has been the marsh harrier. This long-winged bird of prey is a delight to watch, as it glides low over the fields and marshes, head down in an owl-like flight.

There are secretive birds too; tawny owl, barn owl and little owl all occur along various parts of the river, and they are occasionally visible in the mornings and evenings. In winter, the short-eared owl is a scarce visitor from Scandinavia and, if present, it can be seen hunting over the fields and hedgerows in broad daylight.

There are woodcock in the woods, which rode (display) at dusk from March until July. One or two males frequently

criss-cross the river whilst moving between various blocks of woodland in their search for females. Another crepuscular species is the nightjar, a few of which nest close to the river. The nightingale can be heard both at night and during the day

at one or two favoured spots of willow scrub. This migrant species is now scarce in Hampshire, but there remain a few breeding territories here, and their song can be heard from the middle of April through to early June.

Other summer migrants include 10 species of warbler, some of which can almost match the nightingale in the beauty of their song. Along the estuary, 3 species of tern arrive from Africa to join the resident black-headed gulls. The little tern lives up to its name and it has a yellow bill, the common tern is indeed the most often seen and it has a red bill, the Sandwich tern is the largest with a black bill. A small number of Mediterranean gulls can be found, and in the 1960s the nesting colony at Gull Island, at the mouth of the river, became famous for being the first site in the UK to host a breeding pair.

The Beaulieu Estate’s bird reserve at Needs Ore is a good place to see many of the birds mentioned. Permits to visit the reserve can be purchased from the Beaulieu Estate Office.

Just two miles upstream from Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour is the New Forest village of Beaulieu, the family seat of the Montagu family and the location of the world famous National Motor Museum.

Founded by King John in 1204, Beaulieu Abbey was a thriving Cistercian monastery until it was destroyed under the orders of Henry VIII in 1538. The conserved ruins of this vast medieval abbey include an exhibition on its history and the monks who once lived and worked within.

Explore Palace House and gardens to discover the history of the Victorian styled country home and its former residents.

Once the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey, Palace House remains home to the Montagu family having been in their ownership since 1538.

With over 250 vehicles in its collection, the National Motor Museum tells the story of motoring on the roads and circuits of Britain from pioneering origins to the present day. From the earliest motor carriages to classic family saloons, displays include historic sporting motors, motorcycles, F1 racers and a rustic 1930’s country garage.

World of Top Gear recreates the feel of the TV studio featuring a unique behind-the-scenes video presentation. This is complimented by a tongue-in-cheek display of the cars modified for the challenges seen on our screens.

The Secret Army exhibition reveals the story behind Beaulieu’s covert wartime role as a ‘finishing school’ for secret agents.

Visitors can also ride the high level Monorail which circles the site and offers informative commentary and sweeping views of the park.

Beaulieu also hosts a number of events, including the annual Autojumbles and Boatjumble.
