Already a growing center of faith and culture for Chi-cago’s Southside, the Shrine of Christ the King is about to enter the second phase of a full scale build-ing restoration. This will comprise the installation of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and heating and cooling systems, as well as a new arched plaster ceil-ing. The third and final phase of the renovation will include liturgical art and statuary in the classical Ro-man style—thus creating a beautiful edifice dedicated to Liturgy and culture for the glory of God.

Based upon Roman mod-els, this fine example of the early baroque style was designed in the 1920s by revivalist architect Henry J. Schlacks for the Carmelite friars of what was then Saint Clara Church (later named Saint Gelasius Church). This im-posing edifice was devas-tated by fire in 1976. The church’s disrepair and dwindling congregation led to its being closed and slated for demolition in 2002. However, because of its architectural impor-tance and significance to the Woodlawn neighborhood, the community mobilized to salvage the church and successfully obtained its designation as a Chicago landmark.

His Eminence Francis Cardinal George offered this sacred edifice to the care of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. The Institute has undertaken a complete restoration project for this architectural gem. This historic church is now coming back to life as a beacon of faith and culture where the beauty of the arts is available for the local community and beyond.
