What is Dye Sublimation?• Dye sublimation is a digital printing process that uses heat to transfer
dye INTO materials that are polyester receptive
• Ink transitions from solid to a gas state without going through the liquid stage, binding with the polyester receptor
• Only compatible with polyester receptors such as fabrics or plastics, ceramics, glass, metal, etc. that have a polyester receptive coating
• Advantages of dye sublimation: excellent quality, no fading or distortion with time, ease of use, ability to keep quantities low

Dye Sub Key Dictionary
Basis Weights:
• gsm – grams per square meter; used to identify weight of paper
• lb – pound, on the Bond scale; alternative use to identify weight of paper
NOTE: The higher the gsm, the heavier the paper
Caliper – instrument used to verify paper thickness for most typical papers
Cockling – repeating or random ripples occurring on paper introduced to moisture in some capacity
Outgassing – an ink blowout usually occurring around the edge of graphics or where contact with the heat press is void that causes smudging or blurring of the image
Paper Cockling

Dye Sub Dictionary, continued Head Strike – when the print head make contact with the paper during a print, leaving a blemish
Head Crash – same as head strike except the contact causes a tear in the paper
Ghosting – a/k/a shadowing; appearance of a double or faded image on the substrate after a transfer most likely due to paper shift
Wet Prints – term used to describe images printed on transfer paper prior to transferring via heat press
Spent Print – term used to describe images on transfer paper after heat press
Graininess – loss of smooth color gradient within a transferred image; usually more apparent on hard substrates
www.beaverpaper.com
Dye Sub Dictionary, continued Boat Wake– issue that occurs while transferring textiles through a rotary press. Mimics ripple effect similar to that which takes place in water, with repeating lines that are slightly curved and void of any transferred ink on the fabrics
Banding – repeating pattern of lines either overlapping or gaping. Normal due to issues with media comp settings or differential slipping of cores with within the rolls due to poorly converted materials.
Outgassing– directional blowout of ink on a transferred surface that fails to hold the definition on an image or line as it was intended. Most likely to happen with absence of pressure on the heat press
Shading– term used to describe the shadowing of an image, most likely due to a shift in the transfer paper and substrate during or immediately following heat press time
