About the Artist• Born in Wisconsin 1887-1986• O’Keeffe started working as

an illustrator to help provide for her family

The Evolution of O’Keeffe’s work• O’Keeffe began her famous

flower series in the 1920s while living in New York City. By magnifying the flowers, she encouraged people to look at them from a new perspective.

• In 1929, O’Keeffe visited Taos, New Mexico and was awestruck by what she found there

• O’Keeffe is considered to be a great artist because she was able to describe on canvas what it was like to be that landscape• She understood that the place

• Although Georgia O’Keeffe is known mainly for her pictures about the American southwest, she brought her unique style of art with her as she traveled to Japan and Peru.

• Rather than paint traditional landscapes, O’Keeffe’s work frequently focused on one key element in the landscape that was painted in great detail. Her hope was that by learning a lot about one thing, the viewer would learn about the environment that flower, mountain, or shape came from.
