BECKET KEYS CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL ‘Faith in Learning’
VOLUME IV– ISSUE VI 10th July 2015 PAGE 1
Mr Scott-Evans writes:
Our Patronal Festival takes us
back to our original purpose and vision to be a church
school for Brentwood.
Celebrating the lives of the
saints reminds us that we are
all called to be saints today. As
a school we are living out our
Christian values, being thankful
and celebrating what Jesus has
done for us. As we come to the
end of the year, celebrate with
us! Your sons and daughters do
you proud every day and we
are working hard to achieve
everything we can for them and
with them.
Our Patronal Festival was
accompanied by a heat wave
this year! The last two weeks
have been wonderful as we
celebrated with a Eucharist,
charities week, a picnic, sports
day and various other smaller
events. Thank you to everyone
who has come along and
supported us.
The Eucharist was led by Father
Colin Hewitt at St Thomas’
Church in Brentwood. We were also pleased to have
Bishop John Wraw and Father
Paul Hamilton with us.
Father Andrew Grey gave the
sermon. His message of Grace
was a powerful one and
reminded us all that it is not
our acts which can ever make
us good enough for heaven, but
the acts of Jesus that redeem
us.
Various students were involved
with readings, serving, prayers
and offertory. The choir, led by Daisy Benson sang ‘Amazing
Grace’ during the communion
and from the choir stalls they
accompanied all the hymns.
Well over one hundred
students and staff received
communion and the school
community were given a
blessing by Bishop John Wraw
at the end of the service.
The charities week, led by the
hard working Charity
Committee was a great success
with various activities every
lunchtime. There was a penalty
shoot-out competition
(students v staff), a cake sale
and numerous games and
competitions. This crucial part
of our Patronal Festival puts
the needs of others first. My
thanks to Mrs Ahlner and the
committee for organising this.
The picnic was a fantastic time
with the Friends of Becket Keys
putting on a lovely welcoming
event.
We were worried that we
might have sweltered in the
sunshine, but a pleasant cool
breeze kept us going all
afternoon! Coffee and cold
drinks from the Ballantynes
were a very welcome addition
and various other local firms
supported. Some photos on the
following pages will give you a
flavour of the day!
We would like to thank all the
parents and staff who helped
on the day and special thanks to Mrs Williams, Mrs
Richardson, Mrs Barbour and
Mrs Butler for all their hard
work.
Today is Sports Day; we will
have a full report next week,
but for now I would like to
express my gratitude to
Mr Fenn for all his organising of
this important event. It takes a
lot of work and planning and
we have now enjoyed three
excellent sports days under
Mr Fenn’s leadership.
It is definitely the time of year
for saying thank you and I am
so pleased to have such a
fantastic team of staff around
me all pulling together at this
incredibly busy time of year. I
cannot thank them enough for
the work they put in every day,
every lesson. It is such a
pleasure to walk around this
school and see the amazing
work going on.

OTHER NEWS ESSEX MFL FESTIVAL
Mrs Martin reports: Last Friday, students from Year 8 and 9 took part in the first Essex MFL Festival,
‘Poetry by Heart’ at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford. Eight other schools took part in this
event including Chelmer Valley High School, St. John Payne School and Shenfield High School. We enjoyed
listening to poems in Mandarin, German, French and of course, Spanish.
The students chose very beautiful
and challenging poems to recite in
Spanish. They were highly
complimented by other teachers
for their pronunciation, intonation
and the level of difficulty of the
poems.
Well done to all of the students
who participated.
BECKET KEYS’ GOT TALENT
This week we have been talking to
Nifemi Makinwa from 7HS about
her role as our student judge at the
talent show last week.
We asked Nifemi how she got the job. Nifemi explains that
she was asked to write a letter of application about why she should be
the student judge on the BKGT panel. She said: “I play the piano, flute,
recorder and ukulele and understand how practice and dedication is so
important to giving your best performance. I’ve just passed my grade 5
piano exam and I am at grade 4 flute. At primary school I performed on
two occasions at the Schools’ Choral Festival, which took place at the
Royal Albert Hall in London. Until recently, I also went to ballet
classes and have always enjoyed dance. I think that all of this
experience has given me a good understanding of how to spot a
polished and well-rehearsed act!
Of her experiences on the night, Nifemi tells us “I was so excited to be
picked as the student judge. On the night I really enjoyed watching my
fellow students perform. I was amazed by the hidden talents of some of
my peers and their performances were a real surprise. It was difficult to judge my friends’ performances and I
tried very hard to imagine that I knew none of the acts and I was just judging their performance on the night.
My favourite performance of the evening was Melissa Moore’s performance of ‘Say Something’ on the clarinet.
I know that it is really hard to get the notes from the clarinet and Melissa played so softly. Lots of students
said that they were quite nervous and for some, this affected their performance a little. My advice to
performers for next year is to be confident in yourself and to keep practising and performing. The more you
do, the easier it will be to overcome your nerves on stage”.
Thank you for giving us your account, Nifemi amd for your work as a judge on the night. Hopefully, you will inspire other students to get involved next year, whether it is back stage, as a judge or on the stage! Nifemi’s
next goal is to get a part in the school play next year. Thank you again to everyone who came and supported
our students.

DISTRICT TENNIS
On Monday 22nd June,
Brentwood School hosted
a Year 7 and 8 district
tennis tournament. All the
local schools entered
teams and our students got
paired up to play doubles
games against pairs
from other schools.
All students were a
credit to the school
and several pairs
performed to a high
level and had good
success.
As the PE department
look to push tennis
more next year, we
will look to enter more competitions and arrange
friendlies against other schools. It was great to see
our students take part in this event and compete against the other schools. Well done to: Toby
Kelly, James Crisford, Lucas Hayter, William
McDermott, Louis Stephen, Ben Nichols, Joel
Reeves, Ben Fryett, Reuben Torgbor, Nicco
Lovelock, Remi Brien, Joe Stuckey, Will Stroud and
Megan Johnson.
CRICKET FINAL
Written by Jack Giddings (Year 7)
This year’s cricket final was held at Galleywood Cricket
Club between Becket Keys and Great Baddow. William
Davey was the captain and he won the toss and chose
to bat first. The opening pair were Jacob MacDonnell
and Jasper Stuckey; they both started the innings in a
positive way with Jacob and Jasper both hitting 4’s, but
the partnership was broken with Jasper being bowled
out. Next in was the captain William Davey, who went
to hit a wide ball, but unluckily top edged it and was
caught. After William was Adam Sedgwick, who went
on an amazing streak hitting 25 and retiring. The next
batsman, Dominic Spicer, had a tough act to follow but
he also did very well in bat, hitting 16 and 1 boundary.
He was also caught from fantastic shot that was sure
to go for a boundary but for an exceptional piece of
fielding.
Following on from Dominic
was Patrick Warriner who
was also bowled after getting
a quick single. After Patrick
was Billy Thompson who was
defending balls on the stumps
very well until a bit of
confusion between the pair
and he was run out.
Danny Brown was caught
after he hit a shot up into the
air and was caught. The innings went
on until Johnny Wyndham had an
amazing moment and hit his first
ever 4. Towards the end of the
innings Max Warren came in and
was also run out. After this the retired
Adam Sedgwick came in and had a
miracle moment hitting 2 sixes on the trot. That
concluded the innings; ending on 110 for 8!
Great Baddow started their innings well with their run
rate high, but in the middle of the innings it was broken
up with wickets from Adam Sedgwick and Dominic
Spicer. Great Baddow still kept on hitting runs and they
went on to win the match with 4 overs to spare. They
fielded exceptionally and batted well; they were worthy
champions. Our man of the match was Adam
Sedgwick. Thank you to Mr Fenn, Mr Wray, Miss
Honey and all the parents who took us and supported
us throughout the game.
SPORTS DAY
Today we have had a great day at Sports Day. At
Becket Keys we encourage all students to
participate in at least one event and if they are
unable to do so due to injury, students help
officiate events. It was great to see Years 7, 8 and 9
working together to gain points for their houses.
Thank you to the site team for helping to set up
and to all the staff who have assisted with
officiating the events. It was also great to see
parents coming along and supporting this event.
Results will be published in next week’s newsletter
along with a much more detailed report!
