Reflection

The process of reflection is a positive active process that reviews, analyses and evaluates experiences, draws on theoretical concepts or previous learning and so provides an action plan for future experiences

(Kemmis 1985)

Page 4: Becoming a GP

And…..

Reflection is a personal process that enables the practitioner to assess understand and learn through their experiences. This results in some change for the individual in their perspective of a situation or creates new learning for them.

Page 5: Becoming a GP

Why is reflection important

Because effective learning wont happen unless you reflect.

Page 6: Becoming a GP

Types of reflectionThinking on your feet = reflection-in-action

Retrospective thinking = reflection-on-action

Page 7: Becoming a GP

Gibbs Reflective Cycle

Page 8: Becoming a GP

Why is this importantThe outcome of reflection is learningYou need to learn to pass your CSA and AKTYou need to provide evidence in your ePF to demonstrate learning

A large part of the ePF is the learning log and your own ratings of competency

Page 9: Becoming a GP

But….. I don’t like writing things down…. I do it all in my head…

Reflective Writing: role and functions

• To maximise the effectiveness of experiential learning

What do you do with your reflection?

1. Write it in your ePF in your learning log2. File it- is it a clinical encounter, significant

event………?3. Share it4. Link it to the curriculum5. Ask your CS to read it, link it to the competency

framework and comment on it
