social and with support when you need it.

We know that students are investing in their futures and paying morethan ever before and we understand that you have high expectations of

our University and of your Union.

To make sure we strive for what is most important to you, we’ve collected ideasand opinions from as many students as possible. We have listened to you, takingwhat you think we need to do to transform into the visible, relevant, responsiveand fun Union you want. Your expressed opinions are what we are basing the

future priorities on, demonstrating a real and relevant response to listening to as many students as possible.

GATHERING V IEWS AND OPINIONS TO INFORM THE FUTURE....We decided to be big and to be bold in our approach to strategic planning! We initiated a two phased process using focus groups, student councils, the AGM, surveys, and workshops to gather information. We were out and about inviting you to tell us what you think and what you want – and you did – the good, the bad and the ugly! So, our Strategic Plan is based on your opinions, making it evidence-based when we talk to the University about what it is that students want.

We actively sought to obtain the views of harder to reach student groups. We also askedUniversity staff and governors to reflect on their experiences with the Union and to give their opinions about how we can work together to enhance your student experiences. We also asked community organisations, reflecting on our partnerships and thinking about how we can make them stronger and more relevant to students now and as employees in the future.

The Facts...

It is clear that you would like a wider range of events and activities, including taster opportunities such as Give it a Go, and that we should get more students involved in planning these. You said you want to take more ownership of events and entertainment and gave us lotsof great ideas, it is important to keep the range broad and audience diverse.

It is clear the Union needs to be more prepared by promoting events and activities sooner and through a wider range of mediums. Keeping things accessible for students is essential and we value the input of our students with disabilities in particular as we recognise more work needs to be applied to this area.

Uni life can be relentless and Beds SU recognises that some of you are still on campus during the holiday periods, this is a time when you may need us the most and you have asked for year round events and activities to ensure your time at University is everything you want it to be.

What you told us...

Having Fun...University is not just about studying hard, it is about having fun and expressing yourselves. Be it in the night clubs, at Society/Sport Club events or hanging in the Student’s Union bar, Beds SU will be there to give you the best experience when you are not hitting those books.

Student perception - I would think of going to the BedsSU bar to meet friends.

What success will Look like...The Plan...Let’s be exciting! We want active student-led Entertainments Committees so you can take ownership and develop targeted entertainment, events and social activities that appeal to specific groups of students (parents, mature, disabled, etc) as well as events that appeal to a wide range of students. Of course, our experienced staff will be there to provide advice and guidance to help make sure things run to plan!

Get involved! We want to improve the promotion of events by targeting information to students based on what they have told us they are interested in. Here, we aim to provide opportunities for students to gain paid and volunteering experience by helping us market and actively promote our events. We believe students spreading the word is the best way to make an event successful.

Teamwork! By working with the University and other partners we aim to increase the availability of cheap and interesting events and trips for all students as well developing more opportunities for students to get to know each other.

Free or great value for money! We will find ways to support as many free events as possible, we know uni life can be expensive but we believe you need a balance between studying hard and having fun! Where events are not free we will make sure they are value for money! We will review the financial allocation to entertainments and events and make sure they are well supported and, where appropriate, profitable. All profits we make get ploughed back in the union to benefit students.

Celebrating together! It is important that we strengthen our partnership working with the International Office to improve events and activities that appeal to International students of all intakes whilst still promoting integration. We want to increase understanding and celebrate faith, culture and diversity together.

It’s important to be proud of the University you represent in sport and equally in the sportingexcellence you achieve on behalf of the University. You want people to know about those successes and award results with better sport coverage and updates. Student supporters want to know when and where their teams are playing so they can cheer them to greater success.

Nearly 70% of students strongly feel that the Union offers high quality support for sports teams. However, the feeling is that there needs to be greater investment in this department. AU members want to know how their fees are spent and for it to be clear when they sign up.

What you told us...

Students have chosen a mascot that means something to them. Well over half of those replying to our survey said they

would like to be the Bedfordshire Bulls

There will be an increased number of sports teams competing in local leagues.

By 2017 the University will be recognised in the Top 35 Universities in the country for Sport.

The number of sports teams competing in BUCS will increase to 50 by 2017.

The number of sports teams competing in Tier 1 and above of BUCS leagues will increase to 10.

What success will Look like...The Plan...Beds SU delivers sport on behalf of the University. We aim to provide excellent support, training and management of sport enabling our teams to participate in and achieve their greatest potential in a wide range of individual and team activities. Our “sports for all” attitude seeks to overcome barriers for engagement in sport such as academic or placement issues. We want to offer accessible, appropriate sport opportunities for students with disabilities, seeking resource investment where necessary. Improving close links with local community clubs to offer additional support and services to students is key.

With the Sport Strategy in mind, we want to ensure that we have adequate staffing and resources to support development and invest in focus sports teams to support our aspirations in the BUCS Leagues. Where necessary, we will campaign for additional resources to help us achieve the identified targets within the Sports Strategy.

We will develop a strong Bedfordshire Sports identity and work with captains and team players to develop an ethos of professionalism and high standards of behaviour. To attract high profile sponsors, we will offer a Sports Sponsorship Package to increase investment in our teams and promote professionalism within sport.

Working with UoB SportBeds, we will campaign for accessible and appropriate University/campus sports facilities for the benefit of both competitive and recreational users. To inform developments, Beds SU will undertake specific consultation with sports teams and students to ensure the proposals for investment are relevant to student needs.

Show you the money! Or at least where it goes. We will review the Athletic Union fees system and ensure that players understand the benefits they receive as well as the investment that the Union and University contributes to sport. In consultation with teams, we will undertake an annual comprehensive kit and equipment review to ensure quality and value for money.

We will provide employability skills development such as coaching and officiating. We will strengthen links with academic departments to create a team of student volunteers linked to sport. The “V Team” aims to use student knowledge gained through academic studies to put skills into practice.

The V Team will support improvements in communication with our teams through a fortnightlypublication, fixtures, results, photos of matches and website and Union TV screenings. We will use our new team mascot to publicise fixtures and generate pride in Bedfordshire sports.

Coaching will be provided all year round to all teams competing in BUCS.

You, asked for increased funding for societies to support developments and to be more balanced with investment in sport. You have requested more opportunities for societies, to widenparticipation and increase the number of cultural / religious societies, particularly in Bedford.

More information about how to get involved in societies and a big welcome when you do is something you think is important, which is great because those in societies want to be able to share what they are up to. In terms of awareness, 55% of students knew about the societies offered by the union however others expressed a need for more information, not just at Freshers’ Fayre. Students’ ideas ranged from having regular stands on campus to flyering and articles in student communications. It is clear there needs to be more info about how society involvement can improve employability.

What you told us...

The Plan...Following your feedback, Beds SU aims to work with societies to create a unified identity that links each society to the Students’ Union. We want to work together to develop the Students’ Union website as the hub of information about societies. Loud and proud, don’t be shy! Using Union space, notice boards and University publications we aim to help push your society out there for all to see.

The Union aims to target resources to enhance and support non sporting clubs, cultural and religious societies. We will seek opportunities to link with relevant community organisations and employers for their support and sponsorship.

Society achievement and success... We think there should be an event to celebrate your successes! This annual ceremony will link into the Bedfordshire Edge Award and the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) so you can take it with you wherever you go. We will work collaboratively with University departments to strengthen the academic links between society activity and course learning.

Raise and Give! We aim to raise the profile of RaG to enable a vibrant fundraising scene throughout the year. RaG activities need development and an established, consistent time frame for the all important RaG Week. Developing links with University academics and alumni to increase engagement from staff and the sense of community is all part of the fun. Our “can do” attitude seeks to widen participation within the local community. Your achievements and efforts will be recognised and the skills gained will boost your CV.

What success will Look like...

A RaG Society will have formed and more that 45% of students will be aware of what RaG is and will have taken part in some way or another. The funds raised by RaG in a year will reach £25,000 by 2017.

By 2017, 50% of students responding to the survey will have been involved in one or more of our societies. We will improve society member satisfaction rates by 3% annually.Students will be able to access information about societies and sign up through the Beds SU Website.In 2017, 50% of students will have used or taken part in the Clubs and Societies offered by the Union.

I think generally that the Student Union is doing a good job of bringing to life the student experience as a first year. There is so much to do already, many societies and social events/ hang-outs already available and by utilizing some of these from time to time I’ve made friends who have similar interests to me- thank you!

You told us you want support, particularly outreach for students not based in Luton or Bedford. It is clear that more of a presence is needed in the different campus locations, and telephone advice is important for those away from the main sites.

Mature, post grad, international and student parents all rated Welfare and Advice services as the key service that they need from the Union. You’ve told us you need Beds SU to deal with, give advice and info on all types of safety issues; this was backed up in the IGrad 2012 survey results.

Sharing your problems in a welcoming, confidential space with independent advice is crucial. Students have indicated it is important to know how to access advice and who to contact for what, especially during stressful times when help is needed quickly.

You have said that you value staff who are friendly and that really listen to what you are saying as well as allowing you to think through what support is needed to help you complete your studies when times are tough. It is clear you value a good welcome to University and you said you would like support for new students and help from the Union to help to settle in.

3rd Year Social Work Student

The Plan...Beds SU will support you by offering free, 100% confidential expert casework to help with issues from Plagiarism to Academic Offences. You will get advice on what to do and support as you go through the process. To help make life easier for students, we will work with the University to simplify and revise academic regulations and policies into plain English and develop “how to guides” where appropriate.

We want to deliver fun and innovative student-led projects on subjects to do with your well-being, throughout the year and across campuses. This will include an up-to-date programme focusing on all aspects of student safety, working in partnership with community groups and the University. We will demonstrate the impact of our awareness campaigns and develop new and relevant partnerships with local community organisations in all campus and out site areas.

We need to be flexible for you! We work on a case by case basis, treating every student as a unique individual. Our staff will be expertly trained to give you the right advice and guidance on academic, housing, welfare issues and if they feel you would benefit from specialist help, they will support you inaccessing it. We will make sure all of the organisations we work with have quality standards and are members of professional networks.

It is important that we raise awareness so you know and understand what help is on offer when you need it. Understanding issues that affect particular groups of students will help us develop the Welfare & Advice Service and our community links. We want to carry out further research with students, including nursing, midwifery and mature students, to make sure your views inform proposals for developing our services and support.

We will be there when you need us most! We aim to seek additional resources to support students who are affected by stress and depression. Beds SU will send out a friendly and supportive all student survey to invite reflections on how you are feeling and coping with University life and develop appropriate support responses.

When you arrive it is important that you are welcomed, you are safe and you get the info you need to know. Beds SU provides a team of Fresher’s Angels who do exactly that. We think your arrival should be celebrated and want to work with the University to introduce ourselves before you arrive and meet you all face to face when you are here.

What success will Look like...

Students will be actively involved in delivering awareness raising projects related to safety and wellbeing.

We will increase the number of students who would turn to Beds SU for advice and support to 60%.

A specialist Welfare and Advice Caseworker will be working on relevant campus locations to support health and post graduate students, increasing our casework and ensure the needs of these students are met.

Students will have access to easy to understand guides helping them to understand university regulations.

Students experiencing depression and stress will have access to flexible, responsive support.

You Said...

You want your voice heard and to make a difference, not only to your academic experience, but also to the wider aspects of Uni life. Students generally know who their course and faculty reps are but there is some confusion about how the system works and links to the Students’ Union.

You think it is important that representatives are trained and supported so they can be effective in what they do. You want your union to make sure issues are dealt with in a timely manner. It is important to be clear about the different ways that issues can be raised through the representatives, the Union and other routes.

What you told us...

BE THE CHANGE...WHAT DO WE WANT? .... Beds SU leads the way in many campaigns across the University and on the wider student movement. We cannot do this without students and the valuable voice you add to the change you want to see.

We represent the many voices of students at the university. We are here to campaign with

you, and on your behalf.

Your Course Reps said...There are not enough resources invested to support course / faculty reps. Reps also said that other students may not understand the role and may not use the system in the way they should.

Reps feel that it is timely to refresh the course rep role and that this needs to be communicated to students and academics so there is clarity about the importance of the role of course and faculty reps.

The Plan...Resources - We will continue to support the course and faculty reps and provide employability skills linked to nationally recognised award schemes. eg, Higher Education Achievment Report (HEAR). We will make improvements to the way we deliver the faculty rep system and aim to develop a bursary system to support them to make a bigger impact on academic development.

Be the Change! - The Union will develop an Activist Training Academy to enable more students to be inspired and effective in their campaigns. This will be championed by the elected student officers. The Union will ensure that sabbatical officers and relevant staff promote and support student-led campaigns.

Training - Course and Faculty reps currently receive induction training when they are elected into their roles. We want to improve the systems for recruiting and communicating with those representatives and to invest in their training. We also want to improve the support given to learner representatives to strengthen our relationship and make sure all reps recognise themselves as part of the Union. This will allow Beds SU to be more effective when working towards positive change on academic and non-academic mattersaffecting students.

Involvement - Beds SU have involvement in course approval, development and review. We think the people with the most valuable input are students and we will work to involve them as key partners of this process.

Reaching all students -We have identified a need to improve the support for student groups such as the Research Student Support Group (RSSG). We aim to develop systems to ensure their unique learningexperiences are supported by the learner representative system, ensuring they are included in student feedback mechanisms. We will also work to devise methods of engaging part-time and foundation degree students to represent them effectively and make sure they receive the best quality experience available. This will be important as their numbers increase in the future.

What success will Look like...

By 2017, 70% of members will feel that the union provides a voice and represent them to theuniversity.

An Activist Training Academy for development of campaigns will be established. We will achieve a 3% year on year improvement of the number of students who feel that Beds SU campaigns on issues that are important to them.

Students will benefit from a visible and fullysupported system for Learner Representatives. Learner Representatives will have access to a virtual learning environment with interactive tools of engagement.

Engagement - We want more students to make the most of Student Councils and we will review and implement changes to increase participation. Course rep attendance is essential as the Council gives a platform for their voices. We will enhance the relationship with our reps to ensure there are either physical or virtual forums to exchange information and experiences.

Communication - Beds SU will work with the University to improve the use of technology to provide a method to keep course and faculty reps informed.

Partnership - Beds SU co-facilitate and co-ordinate an annual Learner Representative Conference with the University. We will continue to develop this mode of engagement for reps and use any findings toimplement positive change. Developing relationships with Uiniversity staff to strengthen understanding and the partnership approach.

NUS national campiagn - encouraging student activist to become the change with activism training and its first ever Activism Conference

The Facts...

You said that whilst you feel the union does represent students’ views, you do not always know who the elected officers are. This needs to change! You want them to be visible, loud and to make themselves known.

You said they should spend more time getting out and about, engaging with students, keeping you informed about their campaigns with regular updates about what they are working on and outcomes achieved. Mature, post graduate and part time students feel strongly about the Union prioritising representation of their views to the university.

What you told us...

STRONG REPRESENTAT ION...Beds SU will help bring the changes that are important to you. Having your elected officers out and about listening to students, being visible and approachable, is key to ensuring the strongest representation.

We represent the many voices of students at the university. We are here to campaign with

you, and on your behalf.

I would recommend Beds SU to anybody. I like to know that they are there and will

be there to give me help and advice when I need them.

The Plan...We want to see more students involved in our elections. We will explore all the latest technologies, including online voting, to achieve this.

The Union supports students and we think it is really important to connect right at the start and especially as a part of Open Days and Inductions. Understanding what the SU and reps do is important to making the most of life at Uni. We think being in touch with students needs to happen all year round and your elected officers will do work to achieve effective engagement to benefit representation. We want our Sabbatical Officers to demonstrate the difference they make by regularly evidencing and communicating the impact of their representational activity.

We will undertake a thorough review of Sabbatical and Student Officer positions to ensure the roles available are relevant for current students. We want to increase the sabbatical team from 4 to 5 by the end of the 5 year strategy as we believe there should be an increase in Sabbatical Officer engagement with students. All sabbatical officers will spend at least 20% of their week directly and purposefully engaging with students. It is important the Sabbaticals engage across all campus sites and that they make specific effort to communicate with harder to reach student groups.

The Union is led by you and we commit to undertake valid and regular market research to ensure Beds SU responds to your needs. We will endeavour to ensure the University hears the views of all students regardless of their course, ethnicity, age, and mode or start date; ensuring that the needs of specific groups are investigated and student-led action plans are put in place to effect change. We want the University to consider the Union as the main source of student information and to help them to use the knowledge we have to implement changes that make a difference to you!

We will consult with our Student Voice Research group to ensure that all University and Union developments are informed by student opinion using a range of methods.

We will work with the University in developing, implementing and reviewing a Student Charter, actively promoting the concept of studentship and partnership in University life.

We will continue to provide opportunities for students to attend the annual NUS National Conference, the Black Student Conference, the LGBT Conference, the Disabled Students Conference and the Womens’ Conference. We want to encourage attendees to submit motions and to bring back innovative ideas for change that can be developed at our institution.

What success will Look like...

The University will consider Beds SU as the first port of call for all student views.By 2017, at least 60% of students will be aware of who their elected officers are and what they do and there will be 5 sabbatical officer positions.Beds SU will ensure NUS conferences are wellattended and we will develop and deliver mechanisms for sharing best practices to improve our Union.

The Plan...Beds SU will keep listening to you and asking you every year what is important to ensure our services and activities meet the needs of the diverse student body. We want all students to feel appropriately represented, no matter what campus or course they are on. It is essential for the Union to reach out to all parts of the membership ensuring the diverse needs of our student community are understood and championed by the Beds SU.

The Union will increase our focus on the needs of post-graduate students, bringing direct benefits to our research students and many international students too. We will work with the University to secure support and resources for the particular needs of potentially marginalised student groups, including those with dif-ferent modes of study such as CPD, online, work based and distance learners. We will reach out and listen to the needs of UoB students in partner colleges and engage to determine how we may extend our services to meet identified needs and look at the resourcing needs to facilitate this activity.

We want to be open and accessible to our student population and target activity to improve our engagement with specific groups who are under-represented in our membership.

We will target resources to support students in Aylesbury, Butterfield, Putteridge Bury and in the Post Graduate and CPD Centre and will identify the emerging needs for students in line with developments at the UoB site in Milton Keynes.

We think it is really important to develop an ongoing student community, and we want to keep links with UoB Alumni, working together with the UoB Alumni Team. We have lots of ideas about engaging Alumni through sports, varsity, RaG and other activities - exciting stuff and really worthwhile! To really bring it to life, we will look at the option for developing an elected Alumni Officer position to work with the VP Union and Community Development Officer and the University’s Alumni Office.

It is important we know that we are successful in engaging harder to reach groups of students, so we will develop SMART targets and set the benchmark statistical information for clubs and societies. We will also make sure your elected officers lead regular focus groups and offer chances for you to feed in your views when matters arise through Student Councils and via the Learner Rep System.

We will send out strong, clear messages about our commitment to diversity, celebrating and sharing difference but also going deeper - raising awareness, campaigning on liberation and equality issues and being innovative and creative in how we do this. We will also ensure that all of our partner organisations are positive about diversity. Your union will influence the Uni at every opportunity to ensure developments such as personal tutoring, assessment management and the HEAR, recognise that our students are diverse and, whilst you are all students, you all have a very unique experience!

What success will Look like...

A new Alumni Officer will be part of our structure ensuring that we maintain links with UoBGraduates, recognising their achievements and engaging them in supporting current students.

An increased percentage of students with dependants, international students, part-time, post-graduate and nursing students will say Beds SU has contributed positively to their uni experience.

The voice of students with disabilities will have a strong and influential impact for change within the institution, recognising all forms of disability and acknowledging the needs of the individual.

Bedfordshire students like being at a University that embraces students from all over the world. However, you told us you think the structures in place can sometimes make it difficult for you to make a global group of friends.

Examples include trips around the UK, Europe and paid internship programmes that are currently only available to a small number of international students. Some students coming to the UK for the first time said they would like more support from the Beds SU in settling in when they arrive and more chances to develop friendships with students from other backgrounds.

The Plan...A sense of togetherness… We want to build a global community on campus, working with the University, to develop projects and opportunities to bring UoB students from anywhere and everywhere together. We recognise that integration is a two-way-street that should be encouraged but not forced upon students. It is important for us to know if we achieve our goals, so we will look at qualitative measures to see how effective these initiatives are and to make sure that they are current and interesting.

Teaming Up! Sport is a common passion for many of our global students and we will be working together with the international office to develop a fun and interactive programme of sports related events for all our students.

Going global! We will set up a Go Global Society, encouraging students from all backgrounds to join, planning events and activities that promote understanding of different cultures from around the world. Part of this society will be a ”Ripple Group” aimed at encouraging friendships and providing social opportunities to develop natural connections between students from all backgrounds and countries. Through this group, we will develop buddy support programmes to help students settle into university and to provide friendship for students who feel alone or under pressure.

Globally Mobile! We will encourage wider use of the term “global students”. We will work with the University to increase opportunities for our students to study abroad, strengthening their skills and understanding of different cultural workplaces in the worldwide employment market. We will provide opportunities for students to volunteer in diverse communities to enrich their knowledge and experiences of diversity and strengthen our community links.

Debate and Challenge! It’s time for student-led debate about the impact of language and labelling, particularly in relation to culture and communication. We will support this through links with academic experts. We will put a spotlight on issues that students have raised about academic integration through the learner representative system, ensuring the student voice is heard and appropriate changes are implemented in faculties and at course reviews.

What success will Look like...

There will be networks of support to help students feel less isolated, offering fun and companionship and support. Student feedback related to these activities will demonstrate a 70% satisfaction rate by 2017.

Beds SU will continue supporting schemes such as the universities Bedfordshire Edge Awards and HEAR to give students the bestopportunities after graduating.

The Plan...Making you employable! In partnership with the University we wish to ensure students engage with the HEAR and Bedfordshire Edge Awards and also review the implementation of the NUS National Skills Award. We will make sure that you know how you can get involved and see how these employability initiatives relate to future job opportunities. The systems to achieve the awards have to be fair and accessible for all. We will continue to build on our partnership with the Careers Service to develop more opportunities for students within the Union and the local community.

Using what we’ve got! Working with academic departments, we will develop student-led projects that contribute to your studies and offer practical experience.

Interns? Paid of course! We are looking to develop Beds SU graduate intern opportunities each year to draw on the expertise of our graduates and help them into permanent employment. We will seek additional investment from the University to extend the capacity of the Union utilising graduate interns for roles linked to academic subjects including HR, Events Management, Marketing & Communications and Community Development. These will be rotational opportunities to ensure as many students as possible can benefit from the opportunity. We will support the International Student Internship Scheme and host interns in the Union work with them to deliver relevant opportunities for students.

Jobs for you! We will continue to offer students a range of employment opportunities within the Beds SU and will provide comprehensive training with a view to transferable qualifications and pushing employability. These positions will include the Union Bar and Coffee Shop team, Student Elections team, Student Promotions team and the Sabbatical Officer team.

What success will Look like...

Sabbatical Officers will be motivated to work hard in the interests of students to gain maximum impact in their term of office. Sabbatical Officer positions will be seen as prime opportunities to gain extensive experience and skills that lead to improved job prospects.

Due to closely working with our partners our students were moved to become the first Students’ Union to affiliate to Disability History Month at their AGM in November 2011.

The Plan...Together we can achieve more! We will be building effective links within the University’s faculties to develop opportunities for joint projects and partnerships which will aid your studies. The Uni has lots of fantastic resources on campus and there are lots of great projects taking place. We believe that working in partnership will make a big difference to the sense of community on campus.

Somewhere For Students To Go...The Mezzanine Cafe Bar is more than a place for a coffee or a quiet pint. It is a safe, relaxing enviroment for students and our visitors. It is a place for entertainment, partying, studying or just to hang out and meet friends. A space that is also needed on Bedford and Aylesbury campuses.

You told us that you want student-run places to meet, relax and socialise. There is a real frustration that those spaces are not equal across campuses. In particular, you have asked us to lobby for increased space and a cafe and bar in Bedford, and also a student cafe in Oxford House in Aylesbury.

Students feel the Luton Mezzanine Cafe Bar is a welcoming and comfortable environment but adaptations are needed to make it a better space for students. Making the most of Union space to communicate what we do is another suggestion you have made, showcasing students’ work and achievements is another.

Campaigning for improved sport and fitness facilities across campus locations was highlighted and this is supported by information in the 2012 iGrad Survey.

professional. But they need more resources to manage an increasingly complex set of student needs.

You said that you want your Union to have a stronger visible presence on all campuses. You need more information about what the Union offers and how it can be accessed. You wanted the Union to be easy to contact and more interactive with students, especially elected representatives.

Students commented that they did not always know that an activity was run by Beds SU and that this should be made much clearer in promotions and branding. We asked you about our name and logo and our image and many students responded that we were a bit dated and not easily recognisable – so we changed it and we hope you like the new Beds SU!

The Plan...We will ensure elected officers are easily recognisable through branded clothing and promotional information. It is also important to make sure you know who our staff are and how they can help you.

The spaces we have will be used creatively to communicate what the Union does, and who we all are. We will constantly review everything we produce to ensure that it is focussed around your needs.

Our website will be refreshed, re-skinned and revamped and there will be a commitment toensuring it is an effective mode of communication. In addition we will regularly review ourresources and staffing to ensure that we are maximising our impact and that you feel you know what your Union is and does.

We will make a proposal to the University for shared access to all student data to enable us to effectively communicate with our members using our segmentation data to target future communications to students based on relevance and interest.

We will ensure that all event promotional materials are produced in time for you to put it into your diaries, and to tell your friends about it too.

We will make sure that students are aware of the positive changes implemented by the University follow-ing Students’ Union involvement and campaigning. We will do this in a variety of ways to make sure the message gets out there, we want you to know that we are making a difference for you! On that note, as a Union, we will need to demonstrate our effectiveness to students and to the institution. This is particularly important in the context of educational cuts and increases in student fees as students will be asking what are they getting for their money and the Union must ensure good value and high quality in everything we do.

What success will Look like...

The Facts...The Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI) is an assessment model that assist inimproving the services and activities to members of the Union by indicating areas for continuous improvement along its 6 core values.

LEADING THE WAY…Beds SU is run by you for you. Students are involved in its leadership at every level, from Course Reps to Student Officers, Student Trustees to Sabbatical Officers.Being a student led organisation is important.

Students are involved as Trustees in the Union and you think that is really important – we need to keep the focus on being a student-led organisation but we also need to have the expert support and knowledge of staff and external professionals.

Quality...

The Plan...We will introduce a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system with key performance indicators for all of our departments and staff.

We will review our existing scrutiny mechanisms, and where necessary, establish improvements to meetings to increase efficiency.

We provide comprehensive induction, training and support for all trustees during their term of office.

We will work for today but ensure that we are always working towards our long term aims.

Producing an annual Impact Report with relevant comparative data gives us opportunity to shout about what we do!

We will keep students involved in the development of University strategies to ensure the student voice is represented. It is also essential that the Union has a comprehensive understanding of the vision, direction and strategy of the University and how our own aims fit.

The Union Board of Trustees will have the right balance of skills and experience, and willundertake an annual skills audit to appropriately target recruitment for new trustees.

What success will Look like...

Quality...

The Union will achieve Green Impact Gold

Status by 2017.

The Plan...Beds SU will strive to ensure that the University of Bedfordshire considers us to be the first port of call for any opportunity to provide a service. Our aims towards student employment, collaborative partnership and service standards make us a strong and versatile partner.

We will increase revenue from marketing and sponsorship.

The Union will actively engage in collaborative projects to deliver more opportunities for students.

The Union will formulate an enhanced Reserves Policy and build our reserves towards the level recommended by the Charity Commission. The development of this long term strategy allows us to plan financially to include and explore diverse income streams identifying new sources to strengthen the financial viability of the Union over the next five years.

We will have robust systems in place to review financial position of the organisation, establishing efficiency savings without compromising quality of service. To support this, we will provide all budget holders with training and direction regarding financial management.

Green Students! To support student-led environmental campaigns on all campuses, we will develop a Go Green Society, linking into community environmental initiatives. To spread the word we will develop a section on the website dedicated to environmental and ethical issues.

We believe in Fairtrade and ethical purchasing! We have lots of more detailed objectives in our Ethical & Environmental Strategy and we will bring them to life through exciting partnership projects with the Uni and the important steps involved in achieving the Silver and Gold Green Impact Awards.

What success will Look like...

Beds SU will house and support an active Go Green society that takes a joined up approach to campaigning. The Go Green Society will engage in annual activities within the local communities around our campus locations, increasing social awareness and responsibility amongst the student population.

We will meet the targets of our financial strategy and Reserves Policy to adhere to requirements of the Charity Commission.The Union will have engaged in at least one collaborative project with another Union that has resulted in project related income and tangible results for Bedfordshire students.By 2017, Beds SU will have secured acomprehensive sponsorship deal, supportingsport and other student activities.

You Said... Raising awareness about ethical issues and

providing information about fair-trade is really important, the Union and Chaplaincy Fairtrade Wine tasting event in Bedford was interesting

The Fairtrade Campaign was very much initiated and in a way led by the Students’ Union, working in partner-ship with the Luton Fairtrade Steering Group, Grass-roots and the Luton Council of Faiths. The success is

seen after a long and persistent work undertaken in and outside the University that we have declared Luton a

Fairtrade Town and Bedfordshire has achieved Fairtrade University Status.
